I'm starting this thread to try and figure out how many of our members have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. I realize there is little we will be able to find out from the people themselves, as there is no power in that area right now, but perhaps we could compile a list of the people we know live there?

I believe Grond and his family live in Louisiana. I could be wrong, but I don't know. At any rate, I do hope they are ok! My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Also, some people to keep in mind from Florida: MacAddict, BranMuffin and Javlynn.

If you know of anyone else who lives in the area, please post. I hope everyone is alright! And if you live in the area and are able to access a computer, please post as well!

Turin resides in Florida, but I think he was far enough north that his town wasn't hit.

Where are Chrysophalax and Yay Gollum? I think they are somewhere around there too. . . .

I believe they're in South Carolina...

My thoughts go out to the people of the endangered area.

I doubt the Florida crowd got hit with much of anything, they all live in the middle of the state, and the hurricanes that hit Florida usually don't do anything to them except knock the power out for awhile.

Grond's been online just a few days ago, I think he's safe.

I want to say Grond is in Georgia or Alabama. . . But I am probably wrong. It has been a long time since I talked with him. . .so it may have been Lousianna, but several people have reported Grond sightings, so I think he is all right.

YayGullum is in South Carolina, Charelston, I think.

Check this out:

Lenoir-Rhyne College is offering free tuition, room, and board to college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Faculty from closed colleges and universities are also being offered free housing and meals by Lenoir-Rhyne.

Dr. Wayne Powell, President of Lenoir-Rhyne College, issued the following statement:

“We share the shock and sadness of the rest of the country about the tragic situation that continues to unfold in the Gulf Coast region around New Orleans. A number of colleges and universities are closed indefinitely and their students and faculty have been displaced. We are taking this opportunity to assist in some small way to alleviate the hardships they are experiencing.”

Specifically, Lenoir-Rhyne is making available at least 10 positions for students affected by Katrina. Students who were admitted and registered at colleges or universities closed by Katrina, may attend the fall semester or second mini-term at Lenoir-Rhyne free of charge. Arrangements will be made to allow students to integrate with existing courses that began on August 23 or to enter the mini-term that starts on October 13. Lenoir-Rhyne will provide a complete waiver of tuition, fees, room, and board. Preference will be given to students who are from North Carolina or have family connections to the state.

Faculty members who have been displaced from colleges and universities may also contact Lenoir-Rhyne about free room and board options during the fall semester.

If home colleges or universities remain closed during the spring semester, then additional opportunities will be made available for that term.

Students or faculty members interested in pursuing this special opportunity should contact Rachel Nichols, Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, NC, 28603. 828-328-7306. AllenR@lrc.edu.

If anyone wants more info on the above, call the number or use the e-mail given. Or you can ask me and I'll see what I can find out.

I was living in Metairie, one of the suburbs right next to new Orleans. Luckily I have family here in Lake Charles, LA, to which I evacuated. Went into the city just a couple of days ago to check things out; my first-floor apartment had been completely under water, and everything I had there was pretty much, well, garbage now. But I consider myself pretty lucky; I was just renting, and I still have my health and my job, so I'll be fine. There are certainly a lot of displaced people who will need help.
