Remember your guardian angel. Not a plump lady with swan-wings! But - at least this is my notion and feeling - : as souls with free-will we are, as it were, so placed as to face (or to be able to face) God. But God is (so to speak) also behind us, supporting, nourishing us (as being creatures). The bright point of power where that life-line, that spiritual umbilical cord touches: there is our Angel, facing two ways to God behind us in the direction we cannot see, and to us. But of course do not grow weary of facing God, in your free right and strength (both provided 'from behind' as I say). If you cannot achieve inward peace, and it is given to few to do so (least of all to me) in tribulation, do not forget that the aspiration for it is not a vanity, but a concrete act.
Which are your impressions of these ideas (part of the letter #54, 08.01.1994)? Do they have any personal significance for you? I find them truly inspirational

I had a troubled childhood, and often had trouble sleeping. But I knew some words of a little song about Guardian Angels watching as I slept.
What supernatural beliefs I had at the time were unclear and sketchy; but one thing I seemed to know in my heart was true - that the angels were there. And I slept.
I could say much more, but I would be opening up a religious discussion, and I'd have to tell myself off.

Thorondor, thank you for posting that quote. I'd never read it before. I also find it inspirational. I have never been certain what to believe about angels. Tolkien gives me a new and interesting way to think about them - the connection point between God and human, there even if we're not aware of it or feel it.

When I was a little girl, I was afraid of darkness and awfull creatures living in it. My Granny said that an angel will help me, my sister said that a fairy would come and make all the monsters go away.
While I was growing up, my beliefs were changing, but thoughts of something clear snd warm have helped me to pass difficulties.
As for me, It's not important how your angel looks like, but the real guardian is the light inside our souls...
