I think it would be interesting to find out what kind of topics people are eager to debate, depending on how much of Tolkien's work they've read and what peaks their interest. So please vote on the poll, and state your opinion as to what kinds of topics interest you (e.g. philosophical,...etc).

I want debates from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and his "Other Works". I chose those because I believe the hold the most literary value and require more thought to be put into the posts. While I am not opposed to debates from those I will probably not spend my time in them. So don't let my opinion ruin everyone else's fun.

I have voted for 'All The Above' :)

As to 'What Kind of Topic' interests me, this is a difficult question to answer. Often it depends on what mood I am in when I read the question.

I know what you mean, I feel similarly. Usually though, I will go for topics that are not too philosophical.

I voted for all of the above, except the non Middle-earth texts, as I am really not drawn to stories outside the familiar and beloved universe.

I voted for Sil/Hobbit/Lotr/Letters. For me, the more philosophical a thread is, the better...

Everything except the letters and the other works, neither of which I've read. And I'm still working my way through HoME, so I'm not exactly a boffin on that. :o

By having HoME and the Letters on the list, I didn't exactly mean that one should have read them completely, especially the History. They are more or less reference material except for some chunks and stories that are not found or mentioned in the three main works, I reckon the bulk of the topics will come from the LoTR, Sil and the Hobbit.

It's good to have you aboard, Smitty!

Now that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D
I do love the Unfinished Tales though, and I'll get through HoME eventually, never fear!

For me, Tolkien is about entertainment: losing myself in the saga, books and/or movies. TH/LOTR is the main thing, the rest is background, especially Sil, which I find dreary and tedious — except at the end, where it touches on LOTR. I like UT and the peripheral books by Shippey, Carpenter and Grotta.

As for debating a book — how about "Henny Youngman's 10,000 One-Liners"?

(And how the hell can a debate be multiple choice???!!)

What 'debate' are you talking about?

I chose The Hobbit, LotR, and the Sil, because those are the ones I've read. Though I'm working my way sloooooooowly through Unfinished Tales... :o

I voted for Silmarilion, The Lord of the Rings and The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien. These are the books that I like most. And probably HoMe :)

I voted for all of Tolkien's works. And we may want to throw in his biography as well.

As for types of debates, I say the sky's the limit! The debates can range from philosophical to tongue-in-cheek to parody!

Their English is the best one.If you want something delisious let"s discuss the works by Joyce.

This "Debating Society" is reserved for Tolkien topics only, as is most of the rest of the forum. If you'd like to tackle Joyce, I suggest the "Green Dragon" forum.

I voted for Sim/Hobbit/LOTR/letters/unfinished tales. But I have only read most of these once so if I mess up go easy on me please.

I know I'm very late for weighing in on this topic, but I chose Tolkien's main works, Hobbit, LotR and the Sil because I think most of us have read at least these three and therefore more of us can participate. Not all of us are on the level of Mædhros, Anc, or Grond, nor do all of us have access to JRRT's entire body of work.

Perhaps there should be a section for beginner's debates?
