Background: Rinion started life under the starlit woods in the land which later became known as Enedwaith, in the rolling plains and hills of Eriador. His parents were members of a small clan of Nandor elves, descendents of Lenwë. From an early age, he held an interest in the beauty of the natural world that even by the Elves is considered great. Though no-one was unfriends to him, Rinion felt isolated from his family and fellows and was often away, travelling as far as east as the wilds of Rhûn, where tis said, he befriended a group of noble Avari, of whom he returned to visit many times. Upon one of these journeys, Rinion was walking lightly through Greenwood the great to return home, indeed even on the same route that ages in the past Oromë had led the Firstborn of the Eldalië on their great journey. Reaching the hill of Amon Lanc, he climbed a tree to look out over Wilderland. His eyes gazed westwards to the dim Hithaeglir yonder, then southwards, just making out Anduin the Great in the darkness, and finally to the east; to the north he looked not. It was his custom to look back from this great height to the east whence returning to Eriador, however this time he saw the sky was turning light above the very distant Orocarni mountains. He stared in astonishment as Anor made her way through the heavens in great splendour and majesty. Thus began the First Age, and even as the Atari awoke in Hildorien and the Noldor landed on the shores of Beleriand, Rinion leapt down and made his way back home with great haste.
Several days later, he arrived to find his father and many of the elders had already left to pass westwards over the Blue Mountains to visit their Sindarin kin for council. Whilst the new light made Rinion feel an even greater love and feeling for Arda, it was from then that, whether from some great foresight or otherwise, Rinion looked ever upon life with pessimism and regret: knowing inside himself great sorrow and evil should come to pass, yet still he hoped vainly. Summons came not long after, that Denethor, chieftain of the Nandor, had decided to move the greater part of the clan over the mountains and live in the land of Ossirand, underneath the elm-trees. Rinion was uneasy, having never been further westward than Tol Galen, and also because he knew it would be harder to visit the Dark Elven comrades he had met many seasons before. He decided to remove back to the wild woods of Rhûn, where he found to his dismay that his friends were there no longer. He searched from lakeshore to mountain top, until he grew weary of looking and started back westwards in sorrow. It was just then, as the sun set in the west that Rinion heard voices lifted in song not far away. With sudden hope unlooked for, he hurried towards them and by a campfire waiting were his lost-friends, and they received him gladly, and he was happy. For many years, he remained with these Avari, where his tales of travel and the past were intently listened to and in no time at all, he rose to become one of the most respected elves in the colony. However, despite having delighted in the untouched forests and rivers and meres of the wild east on his many journeys hitherto, he was ill at ease staying for such a time. Eventually, he could not take it any longer, and announced with sadness that he had to leave the clan and returned westward, whereto, he knew not. He turned to leave, yet to his surprise, the elves arouse smiling and came to his side, begging him to stay a little while longer, for they wanted to move westwards also, due to the flame that Rinion had sparked into their hearts with his stories and songs.
So it came upon a time that Rinion and his clan of Dark Elves made a slow journey westwards, the journey they had denied many ages in the darker past. And even as the Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri had, these Avari reached the open woods to the southeast of Greenwood the Great. Rinion led them to Amon Lanc, his viewing-hill and it was here that they settled, in the very middle between coasts to the west and the east. All praised Rinion for leading them to this new forest of wonders and he waved these away, yet secretly felt ecstatic that for the first time in his life, he felt truly to be one 'of the group'.

Many adventures befell Rinion after. That is a tale for another time.
