I'm stuck!
-Not just because I can't think of a good title for this thread ;), but because the Fifteenth is missing!

I'm preparing the next installments for the Read it Again.... (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=17999) thread, but I'm having trouble.

In the Tale of Years (TROTK, appendix B), Frodo looks into the Mirror of Galadriel on the 14th. The fellowship then departs Lórien on the 16th.

But, in the text (unless I skimmed over something), the Fellowship leaves the day after Frodo looks into the Mirror.

So, is it that Frodo looks into the Mirror on the 15th, and the "14th" is a typo? Or did I miss a day between the Mirror and the departure in the text? What should I put in my next entry in the "Read it Again" thread?

Perhaps he looked into it on the 'night' of the 14th, which really was the morning of the 15th. Therefore he looked into it before going to bed/after not being asleep for long on the 14th, but it was actually early morning of the day before they left. That logic could account for the discrepancy.

Or maybe Tolkien goofed. Or maybe we're thinking about this too much.

Yep, probably thinking too much.;) I thought I'd ask since I have an update due in that thread soon.

Any other ideas?

I agree with Blackstar. You think too much. One day or two? That is not of great importance. The most important is that Frodo looked into the Mirror and saw many things. When did he do that and when did he left Lorien? Not vary important. And probably Tolkien missed that mistake when he reread the book.

Probably. Well, when I make my update, I'll just mark it down as the 15th instead of the 14th. Thanks!

I changed my mind. I think Tolkien meant 15th when he wrote 16th. Go to the thread in my sig for more information. Thanks!
