Those wishing to keep track of the progress (or lack thereof) of someone's (most likely PJ) movie version of The Hobbit can do so at

Peter Jackson has just stated that he is about to remake the movie "The Dambusters", based on the dam buster missions in World War 2. So that should put The Hobbit on hold for a while at least.

What is with PJ and remaking movies? Couldn't he try to be a little original sometimes?

As far as I know, he isn't into remaking movies per se. (He'd been wanting to do a remake of King Kong for years, mostly as a kind of homage to the film which inspired him to become a filmmaker himself.)

Making LOTR turned out to be cinematic history because of the monumental challenges involved, including the use of cutting-edge techniques never before used on such a scale or for such purposes. His efforts created a clean sweep at the Oscars, which, no matter what you might think of the worth of the Hollywood establishment, is rarely accomplished. Doing The Hobbit seems like a natural follow-up. Let's hope he keeps the "gratuitous jacksonisms" to a minimum!

slightly more complicated legal entanglements

Groan!!:( How unfortunate! I only hope that when the "legal entangelments" are untangled that whoever winds up making the movie will put as much care into it as what was put into the LOTR movies. I'd hate it if the filmakers would just try to get something out as quickly as possible in order to make a fast buck.

As Eledhwen mentioned in another post in another thread, it's gotten worse: Fifteen New Zealand actors have sued New Line: they accuse the studio of withholding moneys that should have gone to them from the sale of the spinoff items: shirts, games, books, etc. So now there are at least three LOTR lawsuits against New Line: PJ's, Saul Zaentz's and now this latest.

Why would anyone want to have a new Hobbit movie, if we have already the Rankin-Bass version of it that is very good, especially Gollum. His voice is the greatest.
If they wanted a new hobbit movie, they can make an animated version of it, a la Shrek (or a la Green Green), that would just be great if being done by a true Tolkien person, and you don't need expensive voices either.

Ah, but we don't have a PJ version!
