Well, its been 3 years, and at long last I've picked up the book and am ready to go again. It might be an exceptionally slow go-around, between all of the reading and papers I'm doing for school, as well as other campus groups/activities which leave me little spare time, but I shall trudge through it nonetheless. Now, I know its been quite a while for some of the other members here as well, especially my fellow long-time TTF veterans, so why not pick it up and start reading again? If anyone wants to join me and then maybe we'll be able to get some discussion threads going, post in this thread. :)

I started reading a few weeks ago. I've reached the chapter "Many meetings" and I can wait you to reach it :) I'm reading my HarperCollings edition, it is in English and I cannot read it very fast. I can read max 50 pages a day. Anyway, I'm in.

I am currently rereading the Silmarillion, and though I would like to read the LOTR once more soon, I don't have that much time on my hands and I'm afraid don't want to get into something I can't commit to.

But you can always participate in the existent discussions as you go along and some of us may reply, or you can create discussions of chapters not yet covered.

I've put together a day-to-day reading schedule. (Check the thread link in my signature, if you're interested. I've put a lot of work into it, and I can help clarify if the schedule is too confusing.)

Because the entire story of TLotR takes place over a period of 20 years, the schedule only contains the journey itself-- From Hobbiton to Mount Doom, a journey that takes Frodo & company about six months.

1 month travelling -- from Hobbiton to Rivendell
+2 months resting
+1 month travelling -- from Rivendell to Lórien
+1 month resting
+1 month travelling -- from Lórien to Mount doom
=6 months approx.

This makes for some pretty light reading, and the time the Fellowship spends resting can give the rest of us a chance to catch up.
There are 3 days of heavy reading, the worst of which falls on Rethe 7(March 8), when Gandalf & co. reach Isengard. They arrive, Merry and Pippin tell their story, they confront Saruman, Pippin peeks into the palantír, and Gandalf speeds him away to Minas Tirith. The entire day takes about 50 pages.
The average daily reading is only about 10 pages.

This summer, I will edit my signature for the fall 2007 - spring 2008 season. Check out the thread and post any questions you might have about it there; I'm still refining it.
