Follow the Fellowship - A TLotR Reading Project

The War of the Ring is considered the highlight of the Third Age. Although many events lead to this war, they occured at lengthy intervals, and TLotR focuses on what Tolkien calls, "The Great Years" (TLotR, Appendix B).

The text of The Lord of the Rings takes place over a period of twenty-one years (3001-3021). However, most of the story occurs within The Great Years (3018-3019).

3001 Bilbo's farewell feast. Seventeen years pass.
3018 (April) Gandalf tells Frodo about the Ring. Five months pass.
3018 (September) Frodo leaves Hobbiton.

Because of these lengthy intervals, I have arranged this reading project to cover the events of Halimath (September) 3018 through Rethe (March) 3019 in "real-time". Here we will "follow the Fellowship" one day at a time, as they make their great Journey from Hobbiton to Mount Doom. This helps to put into perspective the time-frame in which the Fellowship travels.

More details on this are found in this thread (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=17999). But because so much information is compiled there, I will simplify the Journey in three new upcoming threads.

This thread, I guess, can be used for discussion on the reading project in general. The threads linked below will be open for day-to-day discussion and observations. Questions and comments are always welcome!

From Hobbiton to Rivendell --- September 19 - October 27 (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=19072) (thread now active)
From Rivendell to Lothlórien --- December 18 - January 28 (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=19103) (thread now active)
From Lothlórien to Mount Doom --- February 14 - March 27 (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=19134) (thread now active)
