View Full Version : Sil based films - more likely now, given the host of M.E. movies?
With the success of LOTR and presumed success of The Hobbit and it's talked about sequel, studios and producers might get hungry for more Middle-earth films. Would they, could they and should they look to The Silmarillion for material? :o

"Should They"? well there is nowhere else to look for Middle-earth stories.
"Could They"'? It seems unlikely at this time that The Tolkien Estate will sell the film rights to the Sil.
However, it may be possible to do some earlier stories loosly based on the information in the appendacies. Hopefully without the interferance of a certain notorious director. (however, we will not mention PJ ;) )

The challenge would be to take a part of the story that doesn't require the rest for back story. It would have to be able to stand alone.
The children of Hurin probably could be made into a stand alone movie.
I would love to see the Fall of Gondolin made into a movie. Obviously you would need more than Sil for this. BoLT II has the best narration of this that blows Sil out of the water (though there were some earlier embellishments that Tolkien later changed (having a 100 Balrogs instead of half a dozen etc).
It would be neat to have the story of Beren and Luthien against Morgoth made into a movie too.
We could give it to Peter Jackson and he could have Luthien come riding back on a horse after taking the jewel with a sword in her hand. and Morgoth say, 'Give me back the Silmaril, she-elf' and then justify this by saying that this could have happened because it is in the 'spirit of Tolkien' and seeing as Arwen did it and was a descendant of Luthien, it is fully possible and within reason that Luthien could do it too! ;)
