BBC4 broadcasted a programme on 5th March 2008 comparing the two foundational writers, JRR Tolkien and Mervyn Peake.

The programme will be available for viewing, in full, for 7 days from the above date on BBC iplayer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b00936hj.shtml?q=worlds+of+fantasy&start=1&scope=iplayersearch&go=Find+Programmes&version_pid=b00936d6)

I expect some fanatic will post it piecemeal on YouTube after that; but I can highly recommend the programme, which draws hugely on archive footage of Tolkien himself, with comments from other fantasy authors, experts and fans. A thoroughly enjoyable watch for a Tolkien fan.

Cool I may try to catch that. It sounds quite interesting. I'm quite partial to Mervyn Peake as well as Tolkien, so hopefully I can work something out.

Thanks for the tip E, but it's only available in the UK. So let's hope it comes to YouTube after all. :)

I hope you do manage to watch it Barley, I've just watched it on the iPlayer and it is a very interesting and entertaining programme, it's part of a series on fantasy writing in general - the first one (which I missed) was about children's fantasy like Harry Potter I believe.

Shame though this programme didn't touch on his works like The Silmarillion, though these were published posthumously and didn't have quite the impact of LoTR and The Hobbit so I guess weren't in the programme maker's remit!
