He is asked about Ian Holm in this, and he also tells which scene he looks forward to the most.

Over at Del Toro's fan site I found a April 20 interview with the Voice of Krypton site, that has been transcribed by TORN. I posted the link in my first post.

Found it interesting. Here is a sample I editted for clarity:

… you know, so its a really fascinating book in that, and it’s the only one that Ive read of Tolkien that reads, that has such a facile engaging personality. Its incredibly – easy to like it.

...you know, its incredibly easy to get sucked into. Even the way he opens (er) which is, you know, just the stating like fairytales, fairytales always a state, they say – “There was in Kingdom A good Boy”

…and (and y’know) the only one of his that has that charm. That immediate hook.

… and you know, and I think that now if I had to single out what attracts me to it is – Smaug - and the Mirkwood Spiders. Now those are like two things that like, I can’t, If I’m given allowance, to do it, I have to think they are two of the greatest experiences of my life – you know.

and..

Ed Gross: Right. The one thing I do want to know is despite your own achievements as a film maker, is there any trepidation at all following Peter Jacksons accomplishments with the Trilogy?

GDT: No, No, No. Because I think (er, I think) that er, what we’re doing is we are creating a beautiful overture. …

Ed Gross: OK.

GdT: … to a symphony. And (and) the way I see it, it is an overture has (er) a (er) a different personality but then fully belongs to the symphony. So my idea is (er) if the Hobbit takes place, its about half a century before the event of Middle-Earth that are exposing the Fellowship …

Ed Gross: Right.

GdT: .. then (er) … I am allowed to (er) start with certain umm, how would you say, err, with a lot of it being (er) the cosmology being established, we know who Gandalf is, we know what Gollum looks like, we are going to be respectful of every (every) single thing that is (er) …

Ed Gross: ..established already …

GdT: .. err,(that) that is (er) paradigm. But within that paradigm it will be a movie of mine, and it will be a movie I enjoy making … and Im not going to be thinking (Im not going to be thinking) all the time. Im going to be very careful in planning it, I’m doing it out of love, (if) if it was a universe I didn’t feel comfortable with I would have rejected it, like I had rejected many a lucrative franchise in the past.

The more I hear from him, the more I'm liking it. I love his use of the word charm when speaking of the book's opening, and metnioning how it pulls you right in - things I have often done myself! :D

I begin to think the film may open like the book! This is happy news!

"I am very excited, very nervous. It is very daunting. I think it is a responsibility. It is like being handed the keys to the nuclear button." - Del Toro (Here) (http://itn.co.uk/news/ba5471109d1199392b4708895ddf2a64.html)

MTV: Do you view "The Hobbit" as a children's story?

Del Toro: I view it as such generally. It belongs on that shelf on the bookshelf. But what is quite touching and miraculous to me about it is that it also reflects the transition from innocence to the loss of innocence. It is a story about a beautifully carefree creature who learns about war and violence. The movie turns darker as it progresses. Don't expect me to do "The Neverending Story." I feel that my zone of comfort is perfectly met with this film — otherwise I wouldn't do it. (Here) (http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1586421/story.jhtml)

It sounds like GDT has the right outlook. I think he's going to do a great job.

From same interview:

"The most beautiful scene in the book, I believe, is [the chapter] "Riddles in the Dark." I truly love it from a literary point of view and from an atmospheric point of view. It is my hope that when "The Hobbit" gets scary, it will get really scary."

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!
