View Full Version : Following production of 'The Hobbit' film but did not LotR film?
I'm just curious how many of us are anticipating the up coming movies but weren't following the making of LOTR because they hadn't even read the book and didn't even know what LotR was?
I didn't read LOTR until 3 months after the film was out, but I did read it before seeing the movie so I got to go in as a reader. By the time I read the books there was only one theater in the area still showing it.
So it is with this new film that I get to go through all the anticipation and following the news and rumors. I think it will be fun! :D
And for those who did following the making of LOTR, do you have the same enthusiasm for the new movie having been through this all before?

Heh. I didn't see the option for what I'm doing. I didn't follow news for those The Lord Of The Rings movies, and I don't plan on doing that for this The Hobbit movie, either. I heard that some The Lord Of The Rings movies would be made at some point, so I figured that I should hurry up and read those books. A bit earlier than you, from the way you put it.
I wasn't counting down the days until any of the movies came out. My evil mom lady probably was, though, and she'd have been the only reason for me to know the days that they showed up in theaters. I would have picked up on the fact that the movies were out from someone, eventually. I plan on employing the same tactic for this The Hobbit movie. Although, I have been around more humans interested in the sort of things I'm interested in, in the past. I only happened to notice that Iron Man movie came out because I happened to be walking by a theater.
Ah, anyways, I can act interested, if that would be helpful, of course, but I am less concerned with the doings of the real world than the fictional ones I'm already enjoying.
Well at least you bother to look into this forum.. or are we still saying fora around here? :D.
I may have to remember to PM you when the release date gets close.

As an evil moderating type, I figure that it is my duty to read every thread (except for any that deal with something that I am afraid of), so I shall most probably be a lot more up to date with boring real life type movie trivia than I was with past films. *sigh*

When it comes to movies, I make it a rule to stay away from spoilers. (Especially for movies that are plot/story driven.) Star Wars is a good example. What if the internet was available when The Empire Strikes Back was in production? Would the identity of Luke's father have been at risk? As it stands now, everyone, even if they have not seen the films knows who Vader is. So, I only allow myself to watch trailers and TV ads, nothing more.
TLotR is uniquely different for me. I read it long before the film came along, and already knew the story. I knew who sat in the dark corner of the Prancing Pony. I knew about Gandalf the White. I knew Frodo would claim the Ring at Orodruin. No plot twist would surprise me. But, as TFotR approached, I was only mildly curious how they would handle "that book I read once or twice".
Seeing the film renewed my interest, and I began hunting for information on the internet in anticipation of the next two installments. Because I have already read The Hobbit (and beyond), I will continue to keep my eyes and ears open well before it hits theatres. ;)

I voted for following the news on the movies equally. Although I wouldn't use the word enthusiasm; it's more like trepidation.

I voted for 'equal' enthusiasm. But its moderate interest, rather than hanging on every word from the production team/studio etc. When I know they are actually shooting the thing, and it gets to more than just talk, I might reach actual enthusiasm!

Absolutely! Even more so now that Del Toro is at the directorial helm: will he make it great or will he botch it up with "gratuitous Del Toroisms" a la PJ?

Haha!! :D
Hopefully any of Del Toroisms that might be present will fit well into the film.

I didn't know LOTR was being made into movies until only a couple of weeks before the premier of FOTR.
Like Urambo Tauro, I'm staying away from spoilers. I'm trying to keep as open a mind as possible when I walk into the theater.
Like LOTR, I've read The Hobbit many times before the movies were made and I've created very specific and concrete images and impressions of the settings and the characters. A lot of the fun I get from the films is seeing how well the filmaker's perception matches mine.
Oh yeah, it's been about 5 months since I last dropped in. How's everybody been? Congrats on the new addition, Nom!:) He's a beautiful boy.
Holy moly - I disappear from this forum for a couple of years and all of a sudden there are little Noms running all over the place! :D
Congrats Nom, I'm glad to see things are going along great for you!
In regards to this thread; yes, I am following the progress of the Hobbit movie. I'm hoping that it will rekindle my passion towards the finer points of Tolkien's works. I've read LotR, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion within the last few months, but my interest isn't quite at the level required to dig into those large HoME volumes on my shelf. Perhaps I may even get dragged into a few debates on this illustrious forum? One can only hope so...

I was lucky in that when 12 or so my mother picked up an illustrated version of the hobbit for me at the library. I had always been a reader but never before fantasy and dragons, I was more interested in espionage.
I started reading it with her at first as something for us to do together, but after our second reading I stole away and read it to the back cover through the night. My next birthday she bought me the Lord of the Rings and I loved those books just as much.
I'd read through the books a few times before I heard the movie was coming out. They came out with a new edition of the books in black with gold lettering for the movies, maybe about a year before they came out, and I bought it and read through again. This was my folly, because when I watched Fellowship in the theater I was conscious of how all my favorite parts were excluded. Too much good vs. evil, not my kind of middle earth. I was aggravated that they used familiar faces, frustrated that they couldn't cast new actors. I thought the actors and actresses completely ruined possible immersion, it was much worse than say Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. They have that guy from aerosmith's daughter playing Arwen? And worse yet Elrond looks exactly as he did in the Matrix. Leagolas is a teenage heartthrob (though he was good in American History X)? That's not conductive to losing yourself in an epic tale!
I had followed the movies, gobbling up any interviews and tv specials I could with great enthusiasm, for LoTR and unexpectedly hated it. I hope the new hobbit is more like how I envision middle earth, but simply don't have enough hope this time to be active about it. I would rather it be closer to the cartoon hobbit movie than PJ's LoTR. Let's have some merry singing, some ale drinking, and take some adventures!
