Since there seems to be a disagreement on the matter we need to vote to find out who is the best hobbit.

My favourite hobbit has always been Merry, I'm not sure why.

I need still need an "all of the above" button. I can't decide. They're all splendid Hobbits. Different, but all splendid.

In the movie, Frodo. I think he's closest to the book.
In the book, Sam.
There's something about him that seems to grow on me with time.
Maybe it's the 'stick-to-it-ness' he shows from the time he talks to the Elves in the Woody End & tells Frodo "Don't leave him, they said. I told them I never planned to".
We see this grow to Sam jumping after the boat, to returning for Frodo after Shelob, until finally, he actually carries Frodo the rest of the way....
All while appearing to be the not so brightest Hobbit in the Shire.
As the saying goes, 'it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog'.

Sam will always be my favourite! Pippin is almost, ALMOST tied, because Pippin is great, but Sam is still my #1!! Pippin is #1.001, because he's very close to being first.

I always liked Merry in the books. Fun but not quite on Pippin's level of crass stupidity. After all Pippin doesn't work out that Aragorn is claiming the Kingship of Gondor until RotK. Slow or what??
In the film I don't think he really stands out yet. I'm waiting for him to be big in TTT!
Sam cries too much for me!

I had to say Sam because he's my Dad. But I really like Uncle Frodo too.

Well.
First I thought I just order those four fellows:
1. Frodo
2. Sam
3. Merry
4. Pippin
But as it is not fair in a democratic election to give the voting number 1 to any of the candidates I thought I should at least not put that famous Frodo there.
Then I thought I'd fill it with blank, or a non-hobbit. But that looked stupid so I thought about Gollum.
Yes Gollum was a hobbit... or was he. He was a stoor. And Ithought I'd put him in with the name Smeagol. Why he is there not? Finally I thought that this is the FOTR-movie forum and Smeagol/Gollum has hardly been present yet. Many movie goers could not make a proper evaluation on him. So he is out.
Instead I put Bilbo in. How could I almost forget him! And he is definitive FOTR-hobbit.
And Rosie Cotton is there because in the FOTR-movie she made a far stronger impression during her short dance than in the book ever. And if the ending is cut of at the ROTK crowning... she might not be there later. So Rosie is a FOTR-hobbit too. And that resolved the numbering problem: "Ladies first!"

I thought Gollum's eyes made a pretty good impression from the darkness of Moria! That's okay though... poor Smeagol is used to being left out.:(

I must admit I am rather torn by this question.
In the book, I loved Pippin's character (he gave me the most laughs), but in the movie, my favorite character was Sam.
In the Movie, found that aside from Frodo, he was the only other hobbit with a developed storyline. Pippin and Merry's characters were dramatically cut (much to my disappointment), making them seem ignorant and foolish. I just hope the next movie will make up for that lack.

Why does everyone seem to like Sam? He's not such a SUPERB character. He's a dumb and chunky gardner, for crying out loud. His loyalty to his master is just from pure thickness; like a dog and it's master.
My vote has to go to Merry, since he's the most evolved Hobbit of them all. He's funny, witty, strong (for a Hobbit), valiant AND loyal. He did all this AND aided in the destruction of the Witch-King. What more could you ask from a Hobbit?
These are my characteristics for judjing a Hobbit.

Yeah. Sam only took out a spider ten times the size of him, was able to hand the Ring back to Frodo, charged into a orcish stronghold, carried Frodo to the edge of mount Doom. Find me a dog like that and I'll marry it.:D
And remember, Merry was very very fond of King Theoden. That's why he came to the battle and ended up at the knee of the Witch King. That little rascal was one naughty puppy wasn't he?
Oh, did I say welcome to the forum, Ordain?
All the Hobbits were great IMHO. each and everyone withstood tremendous horrors and carried heavy burdens, both mentally and physically.
Edit: LOL. Cheri Littlebottom was a dwarf technically. But I understand why you like her, Chymaera.:)

Shelob event: Pure luck. He crawled up into a ball and held up Sting. I don't see any skill in that.
Orcish stronghold event: Once again, pure luck. Did Sam acctually do anything except climb some stairs? Also, the ONLY TWO Orcs left in the tower weren't left for Sam to deal with. Shagrat killed Snaga and because of Snaga's foolishness Shagrat thought Sam was a great Elven warrior, so Shagrat fled. Still don't see any skill.
Carrying Frodo: Well, more than luck. Here he did show some other skills such as strength and will. But these were never deprived of him in my previous post (although not stated flat-out).
Giving back the Ring: LOYALTY! That was his main characteristic, no matter what you say. His loyalty prevailed the over the power of the Ring, and that indeed is a deed of its own. But, it still doesn't counter my point.

I could, in fact, validly and emphatically make the argument that the real hero of the story The Lord of the Rings was the least noticed Ring Bearer Sam. His sacrifice for the cause was not the same as Frodo's, he not having to bear the ring for the bulk of the journey and so not suffering the raveges of it's effect, but in the end he never waivered in his resolve, which actually could not be said for Frodo, he performed feats of bravery that were beyond those of many Men portrayed in Middle-earth and in fact made the greater sacrifice, leaving his business back in the Shire as well as the woman he loved, whereas Frodo was not said to have had anything but Bag End waiting for him at home, full of treasures as it was, but no real future to speak of was even mentioned...

The real hero? In this story there is no real hero, since there cannot be one true real hero:
See, if Sam and Frodo hadn't gone to Morodor all would be lost, right? But if Gollum hadn't lead Frodo and Sam into Mordor the quest couldn't be accomplished. And if Aragorn wouldn't look into the Palantir to challange Sauron, all could be lost too. And if Gandalf hadn't discovered the Ring Sauron would come and claim it. And if Glorfindel hadn't carried Frodo away from the Ringwraiths they would recover the Ring and Sauron would win.
My point here is that there can be no true hero in such a complex story. It's like a basketball game:
The game ended 80-81
Say you have one player of the victorious team who scores 40 points. Well, one could claim he won the game. But what if that minor, insignificant, clumsy player who only scored 2 points wouldn't score his two points? The team wouldn't win.
See what I'm getting at?
DGoeij
03-11-2002, 07:11 PM
Guess so. But Sam was one of the players that scored 20+ IMHO. Maybe not in vicious swordfights or anything, but I don't see that as the only kind of heriosm.
Yes he was very lucky in those actions, but he who dares may win, right? He dared, he won. The daring part is what makes him a hero in my opinion. It was out of loyalty, love/friendship towards Frodo, that is more than clear from the book. But does that make him less worthy?
He kept much of his wits in Mordor while Frodo suffered severely from the influence of the Ring. Besides loyalty that is plain Hobbit-sense he was able to keep in a very difficult situation. He may never have developed some analytical skills, but common sense kept working for a very long time in his thick skull.

It's kind of easy to think he's your favorite Hobbit, since a whole book is written from his PoV! :)
Guess I just have something against him... By the way, I also liked him ALOT the first time I read LotR, but next time I read it I realised he wasn't that, well, "cool" (don't know if that's the right word to describe my views etc, but, what the heck ;)).
DGoeij
03-14-2002, 03:41 PM
Well Samwise being not 'cool' makes him cool IMHO, so I guess I differ in opinion on emotional bases there. The gardener with the common sense, not willing to go into heavy combat and very loyal to his friend. Finally ending up back home, with his kids on his lap and the misses in the kitchen. I really liked him because of that. :)

Sam & Pip are my favourites. Sam for his utter bravery and loyalty (and it is NOT stupidity  ), and Pippin for his sense of humour and his ability to mature and grow as the story develops. Both of them proved that there are more to hobbits than meets the eye. Frodo wanted to give up near the end, but Sam wouldn't stop at all. They had no hope left, and yet Sam knew that they would overcome. And Pippin goes through much more than would be expected of a young hobbit, and he deals with it, and manages to prove himself to be very capable of dealing with a tough situation. This is why I think that Sam and Pippin are the best. But, it's just my opinion. I bet a lot of you want to shoot me down. Go ahead, I'm too tired to fight back right now.
