View Full Version : Will there be any evil men?

I made this post in another thread but it seems worthy of it's own so here it is again:

Has anyone heard any mention or seen any pictures to suggest there that the Haradrim, Easterlings or Dunlanders will be shown in the films? Will there be any evil men at all or just orcs? Will even the Corsairs become seafaring orcs?

Surely the complete omission of evil men (if this is the case) is a vastly more substantial adulteration of Tolkien's work than Arwen at the Ford! Sauron's corruption of so many men to his service is a major plot line of Tolkien's writings.

I'll acknowledge that the obvious reasons for PJ to do this are to completely avoid racism allegations (Haradrim are black) and possibly to not confuse the simpler audience members (i.e. men are good, orcs are bad - that's all you need to know) but I don't think that's reason enough.

btw - we already know that Helm's Deep will just be Uruk-Hai vs. Men & Elves. PJ described the battle just as such in a recent quote.

I replied last time and I will reply again...you dont think because I reply, no one else does-- do you?

You are right about the political correctness angle. How does one distinguish the bad Men? Are they a different color, different racial features. I suppose one could use a different war makeup. On the other hand the Orcs are a built-in "Bad Army" that no one can get offended at.

On the third hand, having bad men emphasizes the theme of men's lust for power and willingness to be dominated by the Ring.

My guess is that by the time of ROTK there will be Bad Men Armies, but not racially distinct.

Just curious, but isn't this more of a 'Two Towers and Return of the King' thread? I absolutely hate to hear rumors about the next two films before I see them. As to bad men in Fellowship, I could hear men screaming in the 'Orc pods', so they didn't exactly sound like they were willingly being 'bred with the Orcs', and hence they were probably not completely 'evil' (pinky finger raised to lip while saying this). On the other hand, the crebain were from Dunland, and they seemed reasonably evil. Maybe they will become an amalgamation of both the book crebain and book Dunlendings, like Arwen being book Arwen and book Glorfindel.

I don't know where this thread belongs, seems like it's a difference between 'Tolkien's LOTR vs. PJ's LOTR'...if that's not appropriate, seems like this forum and the Fellowship forum are redundant.

So is the TT and ROK forum the place for 'spoilers?' Have we hashed out a policy regarding spoilers? Do we tag every little thing, nothing, or is the TT and ROK forum a free-for-all while the others are spoiler free?

Harad, I didn't see any reply from you before..just some squeaky fellow.

The simple thing to do would be to bad men who are white too. You can distinguish them with different armour /devices /apparel
/banners etc. I think not having any bad men would be a big loss to the story, but I can understand why PJ would balk at the thought of portraying anyone without a white skin as a bad guy! If there was one change I wouldn't lose any sleep over this would be it.

They're the people that live in Khand!

Sometimes known as the Khand hams.

So nobody has heard anything confirming or negating evil men in TTT or ROK? Hmm...that's a bad sign, it points toward negating.

I don't agree PRH- no buzz spreads like bad buzz. Grima's in Two Towers, so I'm willing to bet the Dunlanders will be there (I gotta have faith, faith, faith!).

Aragil:
I'm thinking if there had been armies of evil men assembled during shooting in the numbers of actors playing orcs, Rohirrim, and men of Gondor then we'd probably have seen production photos of them by now (as we have seen photos of all the others).

I hope so.

PRH is arguing about things which haven't even happened yet.

I know...what a freakin' NPW purist!

Actually it has happened. The screenplay has been written. PJ has filmed the entire LOTR (sans whatever pickup shots). Whether or not there will be evil men has been set in stone. We just don't know what the truth is.

YES! There are evil men!

I give thee proof!

Those are pics of the TTT action figures by Toy Biz. A Wildman of Dunland, and an Easterling are two of them, so they are in the movie! Woo hoo!

:D

Thank goodness!

(no evidence of Haradrim yet however)

Also, here's a picture of the Easterlings from the movie:

And the Dunlanders (I guess breeding with orcs wasn't such a step down!):
