The Silmarillion is my favourite. It is so deep and has the best characters, like Turin!!

Oh geez, I can't pick! Probably my favorite so far, as I have not read all, would be The Fellowship of the Ring.

My fave has to be TTT but I was surprised to see in the poll that the Sil is number 1. I'm looking forward to purchasing and reading it now.

Yeah it is great with turin's part, but i personally like the part with turin in U.T .It has lots of detail and though overall sil is better then it it is still a great read.

As I grew up to Tolkien I found that different books were my favorite over the years. I liked the HObbit much more than LoTR at one stage, and after that I rarely put LoTR down (I liked fellowship the most and books three and five), and then the Silmarillion came into my world and I was enthralled. Today, the Silmarillion would probably be up there as it is the most convincing work of imaginative fiction among them all, and is so similar to the myths of many cultures. The Unfinished Tales are wonderful as well, but I am not all that deeply into the HoME series. By the way, read Farmer Giles of Ham. It's wonderful.

I've heard that its quite hard to read, but I suppose once you get used to it, then its plain sailing from there on in. Going to get a hardback copy of the Sil in the next few weeks, really looking forward to reading it finally!

What is it that attracts people to a specific book of the Lord of the RIngs? I tend to view it as a single entity and like some parts from all three books.

I love LOTR! But in fact I haven't read the Sil and Unfinished Tales yet, I have to fix that! I think that the best book in LOTR was THe return of the King, but THe Two Towers wasn't so bad either, I think that The Fellowship of the Ring wasn't so good that the other two (it was still very good) The Hobbit is a great book too!

The first I ever entered Middle-Earth and fell in love with it INSTANTLY. IT's the best. All the others were compliments to the first.

The Two Towers because it seemed to be so deep and heart wrenching. I was so moved by Sam's love for Frodo and by Merry and Pippens chance at growing up a bit (in more ways than one:)) anyway, it was really good

My favourite is the Sil, no doubt. Some passages in it are so beautiful they are beyond description; sometimes reading it I feel like Gimli in front of Galadriel (especially the conclusion of the Akallabêth! that could qualify as the best thing ever written in English prose, IMHO) but the Return of the King is close behind. (I would say the Lotr as a whole; it doesn't make much sense to me to judge the volumes individually, as they are all one continuous story). But I keep thinking that the UTs are, well, unfinished; and fabulous as they are, they would have been the book of the milennium if Tolkien had worked on they as closely as he did on the Lotr and the Sil.

Gil-Galad

Yeah, Rúmil
The Sil is the greatest book!I think that UT is not worse too,but I just don't like it as much as The Sil.

They`re all so good in different ways that its really hard to decide..but I think for me the one that just tips it is The Fellowship of the Ring. Its the best because its positively stiff with suspence, seems like its building up to such a frightening cresciendo, like a thunderstorm brewing.

Maeglin
08-18-2002, 08:49 PM
they're not letting me vote right now:mad:

but anyway I would say I have to agree with Jon, The Fellowhip of the Ring is just full of suspense, and it has more happening in it than the other LOTR books, TTT is kind of boring, at least the second half anyway, and in ROTK the story ends:(

To me, there is no scene as exciting and as riveting as the Battle of Helm's Deep. I can still visualize King Theoden and Aragorn riding out from the Hornburg and cutting a path out of the tower, knowing in all liklihood that they will perish and then seeing (in my mind's eye) the look of sheer amazement as they gaze on the wood, thinking a miracle from Manwe had occurred. Now that is riveting stuff. :D
