Thanks for the welcome guys. Its cool to be in such good company. Ive only been on the forum a few days but ive already read and replied to some interesting posts. Its great to be in the company of people who love Tolkiens works as much as i do. Hey any of you guys read " Man and Myth " by Joseph Pearce. Its a real insight into the great man himself.

Hey all, I've been trying to get into this place forever! Finally got in, so I figured I'd leave a message. I've read the posts for a while, and everyone seems to be really nice and respectful. I speak French as well, incase anyone else does. I got into the books before the movies, but I must admit that the movies really spurred my interest in Tolkien. I am a Tolkien fanatic I guess you could say, but no where near as much as some of you guys!!! :D

Okay. I just tried to post after I logged in and it told me that I couldn't untill I logged in. I did it again, so hopefully this will work this time!

Hello everyone. I am very new to this board and this sort of thing. I'm fairly new to Lord of Rings and Tolkein in general. I read the Lord of Rings in High school but don't remember much of it and I'm reading it again now. What I am REALLY interested in is the last book that Tolkein wrote about the Elves. Cant' wait to read it!

Eledhwen
12-16-2002, 08:43 PM
If you think you're new to Tolkien, I had only read The Hobbit when I saw Fellowship of the Ring movie. Since then, I've read little else. The two or three other books I've tried to read since have been spoiled by Tolkien's excellence. It's a bit like drinking best arabica coffee, then trying to enjoy a cup of cheap instant.

Tolkien is a great antidote for the trials of motherhood. I hope you visit the forum lots.

Marenautha
12-17-2002, 07:25 AM
Ya, I totally agree. I can't read anything else right now because I'm so caught up into the world that Tolkein has created!

Welcome to the forum Marenautha. :)
I hope you'll enjoy The Silmarillion as much as so many others do! It really isn't the last book he wrote, he had been working on the book for many years, even before he wrote The Hobbit, he wanted to have it published along with The Lord of The Rings but that didn't work out. Anyhow, his son published it after his death. It really is an amazing book, and I look forward to hearing your opinions of the book after you've read it.

12-21-2002, 10:12 AM
Hello everyone,
I'm Madame Parker and i think that this has got to be the best site i've had the luck to find.
Let's see, i'm 18, live in London, i'm a bookworm, a film buff and i like to talk about anything, i'm very open minded.

I write stories, at the moment i write fanfiction, it's a great way for me to learn how i write and what i want to write about.
I also study a great deal, i guess that's why i love the Lord of the Rings so much, at the moment i'm working my way through the Silmarillion, it's an eye opener, most of all since i want to know more about Sauron and how he came to power.

Well that's me.

Madame Parker

Hey, also Madame, let me know what you think of the Similarian! I am re-reading the Lord of Rings right now but I'm getting that one for Christmas. I've never read it and I'm REALLY looking forward to it!!

Let us know if we can help you with anything. I don't know much comparatively yet, but their are some very smart people here!

Hi there, everyone!

I've been lurking at this forum and finally decided to register. Y'all look like a bunch of nice, fun folk and I hope ya don't mind my strange little self posting here :D

I've been a fan of Tolkien's works since I first read The Hobbit when I was ten or eleven and rapidly tore through the The Lord of the Rings a year later. My favorite books of the trilogy is The Two Towers, mainly because Gollum plays such a large role in the second part of the story:) I'm also very fond of the Lays of Beleriand.

I'm now twenty-one years old and am just as rabid a fan as ever. I find the evil characters of Middle Earth the most interesting -- but, as I said before, I'm weird and crazy :P

And before I ramble off endlessly, I'll end this post ;)

Hi. My name (screenname and real name) is Daniel, I'm 14, and live in Bangor ME. I am fairly new to Lord of the Rings. I read The Hobbit and FotR a few years ago, but it wasn't until the movie version of Fellowship came out that I read Two Towers, and not until quite recently that I read RotK. I have always enjoyed the books (those that I had read), but it wasn't until I finished RotK that I really became interested in the way I am now. So, I'm excited to be here, meet other Tolkien fans, and talk about the books.

Well.. I guess I'm a fairly new fan of Tolkien, I've read The Hobbit and LOTR (I just started reading LOTR a second time). I'm looking forward to reading some of Tolkien's other works. What do you guys recommend?

Also any advice or anything would be helpful! Thanks everyone!:)

Welcome, FrodoLives! Mae Govannon! hope you enjoy it here!

P.S. since you have already read LOTR once I would say finish that the second time and then read The Silmarillion, it's a great book that really gives you insight into Tolkien's whole world and helps you better understand and comprehend LOTR better too.

Hi!
My friend told me about this site, but im new and as she is away, i would love some help. She told me she's an elf. How do I chose which guild to be in?
I only recently saw the films because they were out of the cinema, but i'd read the books before. I'm sure I don't need to tell anyone here how brilliant they are!?!

Nóm
08-27-2003, 10:41 PM
Hello Eilana, and wecome to the forum.

I would suggest looking through the guilds then deciding which one is best for you.

Eilana
08-27-2003, 10:50 PM
Thanks Nóm!
I'll take a look at them then. Can I ask you why you chose elf though? If i am right in thinking you did!

Nóm
08-27-2003, 10:56 PM
I am not in the guild of Elves. I suppose you thought so because of my title 'Elf Friend'?

The reason I am not in the Guild of Elves is that they are mostly concerned with Role Playing rather than discussion, and Role Playing is not my thing. There are a couple other Guilds here that are centered on Role Playing, while others do discussion and activities about the books. There are also some guilds a lot more active than others, so you might also want to take that into consideration when you pick one to join.

Eilana
08-27-2003, 11:00 PM
Thanks for your help! So can I just go into the boards for the guilds and look around without deciding? Another question (sorry!), some people have pictures under they're names and i searched and their avatars. Do you know if i can get one myself?

Nóm
08-27-2003, 11:08 PM
Yes, everyone is welcomed to look through all of the guilds without joining. And in most cases, such as The Guild of Tolkienology, Guild of Ost-in-Edhil, and Guild of Scholars, you can post in the discussions without being a member. I can not speak about the Role Playing type guilds though.

The Webmaster has TTF set up so that a person must have 100 posts before they can use an avatar.

Eilana
08-28-2003, 12:37 PM
Thanks for all your info! Brilliant! I'll take a look around then. so when i have 100 posts i can have an avatar, okedokey!
Thanks again for all your help!

Arebeth
08-28-2003, 02:12 PM
And when can you choose your status?

Eilana
08-28-2003, 02:30 PM
If you mean your status within the guild, I think you start low and then the more active you are and the more posts yo post, you go up the ranks. Someone correct me if im wrong, but that the impresion I got from looking around.

Hello! I'm a newbie, a neophyte, etc. I was just wondering if anyone knew how to use/join the RPG's. Also, I know it stands for "role playing game", but what exactly do you do in it? I've never played before. I tried clicking the links, but it only got more confusing as I went along. I must say, this forum is quite addictive, but it's just so awesome to find all these people who know so much! Oh yeah, while I'm at it, what's a guild?

Thomas Baggins
01-20-2004, 08:26 PM
Well Eressea, an RPG is lake a book, but each person posts part of the book, the starter setes the basic plot-line but the poeple who have joind the RPG get to make minor things happen, but for any plot changes that's up to the starter. If you want an real help on RPG's or would like to join them head over to our sister-site, Middle-Earth-RPG (http://www.middleearthrpg.com) Hope that helps somewhat. A guild is a a group of people who have the same interst in a certaion thing and have opened their own area to further that interest, and discuss it, and have RPG's that are related to it. I.E. The Guild of Ranger's on Middle Earth RPG is dedicated to the Dunedian of Arnor, and the Guild of Eruhini on The Tolkien Forum celebrates the history of Men.

Mae govannen all!

I shall start my time here by telling you all a little about myself.

I am a nineteen year old guy growing up in the Suburbia of Denver, CO. Through many ill events I have had to return to the home my parents and work as much as I can. To do this I have found a job at Gunther Toody's, a fifties style diner, and have been there for many a month. I have been labled a geek by many, but have learned to take pride in this, for I have a need for more knowledge at all times and actually take the time to find the answers. On top of that I have been Role-Playing at a site online for close to eight years now, and have learned much from the times I have there.

I first became interested in LotR, and Tolkien's other works, in sixth grade after having read The Hobbit. I will admit that I have only read The Hobbit once but have gone through the LotR many times. Beyond that whole series I have read Unfinished Tales and am in the middle of The Silmarillion. As well I am the un-official editor for a book that my friend is writing as a part of Arda's history, and am in the preperation process of writing my own book in the style that Tolkien used so effectivly, though with more action.

I have been a Ringer for sometime now, but seemingly feel as a Vala within those halls, for I answer all their questions and such. However I hope to learn much from the minds here.

Wow, it's certainely been a long, LONG time since I was last back here, even though I joined AGES ago... :)

Anyway, good to be back, especially after that wonderful 3rd movie. They did Tolkien much justice, especially in RotK. Peter Jackson and the Cast and crew should be very proud of themselves for doing such a fabulous job!

And lookie, my siggy's not doing so bad either...Finally fixed it! Still sad about not having an avatar though. :( *pretends to pout*

Hello everybody,

I am of course a Tolkien fan, though a quite recent one. I hadn't heard of him before I came to the Netherlands 3 years ago. Today, I have already read Lord of the Rings in 2 languages (about 7 or 8 times for each of those languages), The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and some of his Unfinished Tales.

I am not only a fantasy reader, but also a fantasy writer, I've got five finished novels and about 10 or 15 short stories, most of which are in English. The rest are in Romanian, my mother tongue. Although I have never lived in a country whose official language is English, I have struggled to learn it quite thoroughly, especially for the sake of my writing. Tolkien therefore has been a great teacher to me in that respect and his style of English is still the best I have ever found in a book.

A few things about myself: I am quite a conservative and religious person, which is why Tolkien's mysticism touches me so much and so deeply. The Elves impress me very much and the combinations of Elves and humans, such as Aragorn, son of Arathorn also known as Estel, Strider, The Dunadan and so on, fascinate me. I have a taste for languages and linguistics and I have studied the grammar of Elvish as Tolkien intended it. I am currently working on making my own language for the new novel I am planning to write.

So: a big HELLO to you all and hope to see you around!

Cristina

Hello I’m Winky Dink,

A friend asked me to join this Forum. I was a member of another Forum called Halls of Mandos, which seemed like a nice place until I came across some bad information about some dealings with an individual who runs that Forum named Harad, what a pervert. I have removed all my posts from that Forum, which I’m told was wrong, but under the circumstances I felt it was the right thing to do. Anyway I hope to find a better caliper of people hear at The Tolkien Forum. By the way, how many posts do I have to make here before I can have an Avatar?

I saw the movies and read the books years ago before LOTR was popular. I am now in the process of reading them again.

You might be curious about my name Winky Dink, I’ll give you a hint, its not a Tolkien name. Winky Dink is a cartoon character in the 50’s who at times ran into trouble, and is in need of help with the aid of the home audience. It was, I believe, the first interactive television show. My parents gave me the nick name because as a young child I would get in troublesome situations and someone would have to help me. For an example at age 4, I somehow got on top of the barn roof and could not get down The fire department was called to the rescue, and from that point on I was given the nick name Winky Dink

Hey, there, all.
I'm NeoFrodo, and thought LOTR is awesome, Matrix is pretty cool too. Thought I'd check out this board and see what's what.
Hope I have fun here.

Though it won't make sense anymore, feel free to call me Pockets. Also, feel free to enquire as to why one would call me Pockets.

Greetings all. I'm in a similar boat... joined MERPG a few months back, but with its imminent contraction migrated to these boards. So... yeah... look forward to discussing/writing with the lot of you.

Regards.

P.S. I have a post up in the Glittering Caves, just in case you're interested in dwarf-related literature.

Rosie here. I have a space in my name now, see? ^ *smiles up at new name* Well, Pockets, It will take me awhile to get used to your new name. Maybe we could just call you Lint and confuse everyone even more... or less... or... yeah. :)

Hello my old buds from MERPG... I've moved over here as well... *Sniff* for MERPG, but I guess it's all for the best.

Nice to see people I know here. We'll have fun. And now I get to meet even more Tolkien Fans. :)

Nicknames: Hari, Angst, Harimad, Harimad-Sol.... And for those Fantasy book lovers who have had the privelage to experience the writings of Robin MckInley, yes, this is the name (and nicknames) of the main heroine of The Blue Sword.

Welcome to the neighborhood, refugees from MERPG! :) I really think you'll find this forum an enjoyable and friendly place. Not only will you be able to RP to your hearts content, but you'll be able engage in as much OOC chatter as you like ;), get any question answered that you might have about anything related to Tolkien, and get into all sorts of discussions that range from the academic to debates, to light-hearted to downright goofing around!

That'll be nice. Not that I'm mad at the MERPG mods or anything, but they didn't like out OOC chatter much. Which definately isn't all bad, but still, chatter is fun!

And it's good to see that old avatar back again, Pockets. :)

Did MERPG go down? They morphed from here and here they return?
I hope this don't mean restrictive rules for RP...

Anyway, welcome back to TTF!

Hi, I'm new, is anybody out there? I've been a Tolkien fan since the 70's. Here's a challenge for you... where is Gandalf mentioned in the Silmarillion? And what was he before he came to Middle Earth?

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!

I'm a long time fan of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and enjoy discussing them with others.

In response to angelicabaggin's questions...

Gandalf is mentioned in The Silmarillion in the chapter entitled "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age":
Even as the first shadows were felt in Mirkwood there appeared in the west of Middle-earth the Istari, whom Men called the Wizards...Chief among them where those whom the Elves called Mithrandir and Curunir, but Men in the North named Gandalf and Saruman.

Prior to his arrival in Middle-earth in approximately the year 1000 of the Third Age, Gandalf was a Maiar named Olórin. In The Two Towers Gandalf says,
Olórin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten.

Of Olórin The Silmarillion states:
Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin. He too dwelt in Lórien but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned patience and pity.

Hail my friends-to-be (at least I hope so)

I´m new here (obviously) and I do hope to learn lots about LOTR here... I´ve only read it three or four times, so I really have lots to learn.
I love all kinds of books, I´ve already seen C.S. Lewis fans... maybe there are some Pullman fans here as well (simply loved Northern Lights!)

I hope to hear from someone

Hiya...I've always been wary of "Meet the Newbie" threads, but I figure why the heck not, eh? I'm not so new chronologically, but I've posted little and lurked less, so that's new enough I suppose. :D

So, uh...nice to meet y'all!
