Did I make a mistake in weavng my own thread on the New Members board? If I did, please excuse me as I correct it in posting a second greeting here. Salutations! I have no name to give you OOC, but I am sure that I will acquire one soon enough. IC, you will find that I have many names, but for the most part will be prowling the inns as the lingering Elf Sulhir Angolhannas or an Arnorian remnant by the name of Hathelin.
Greetings, kinsman! Your name is glorious. -headbow- As a loremaster of of the Imladhrim, my dear Hamenalgar, I am embarrassed to admit that I have not heard your father's tale. Please do tell...

Hi Alagos, and welcome!
It is perfectly acceptable to weave your own thread, as you put it. But a note in this one is a very good idea, as many people will be subscribed to this thread already, whereas they have to discover your new one.
I hope you enjoy your stay on this excellent forum.

Hallo :)
I come from Poland and I've been interesting Tolkien's books for years :) I'm a poet, essayist and webdesigner. My Polish website address is: http://tolkien.com.pl/eldalairie . You can find my poems, art and photographs there. I share it with my friend Avari. Also, I am the administrator of the largest Polish discussion forum devoted to J.R.R. Tolkien, his life and works (http://forum.tolkien.com.pl (http://forum.tolkien.com.pl/)) and the editor-in chief of a tolkienist almanac 'Aiglos', which is published twice a year also in my home country, and whose website address is: http://aiglos.tolkien.com.pl/english
Aiglos Special Issue is published in english. The main reason we decided to publish an English version of our journal is the fiftieth anniversary of the complete publication of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, and Tolkien 2005 (http://www.tolkiensociety.org/2005/about.html), the conference and convention held at Aston University in Birmingham where we were in August 2005.
I have also gallery here: http://nifrodel.deviantart.com/

So I'm glad that my nickname has no 'dh' inside :D - of course I won't be angry (whatever it means) if somebody will call me 'Adhiemus' some day - I'm a guy with a sense of humour ;)
I decided to join your magnificent forum, because I feel strong desire to improve my english (I'm from Poland, temporarily in the U.K.) -but what would be better than to discuss favourite subject (Middle-earth of course) with a briliant group of english-writing Tolkien fans? So at the beginning let me apologise for my very, very poor english before somebody shot me with a bow :D (this, of course, will make my Prancing Balrog an orphan :D - his addres is http://rozbrykanybalrog.zlotylas.org (http://rozbrykanybalrog.zlotylas.org/) , partially english translated humorous website) and may the Force be with us :)

Hm am I posting in the right place? I hope so, sorry if I'm not.
Anyways. Hello, I'm Sathos and just registered here a day or two ago, though I haven't had a chance to post anywhere yet (I was reading some the interesting posts already on this forum). I live in Alberta, Canada, where I've lived for about 16 of my 17 years of age. As I seem to often be mistaken for a boy online (perhaps the name 'Sathos' heheh), I'll say from the start that I'm female :) I have read the Lord of the Rings (and the Hobbit), but it was probably 5 years ago now, so I don't remember as much as I'd like to. Currently I'm reading the Silmarillion for the first time, planning to re-read LotR afterwards. I didn't have any reason in particular for joining this forum, just found it while searching for the answer to something that confused me in the Silmarillion (I did manage to find it). Looks like a really interesting forum though, so here I am :D Anyways, pleased to meet you all :)

Reading the Silmarillion then going back to the Lord of the Rings is an excellent move. All those historical bits that were a tad confusing the first time around suddenly become enriching.

Ah Minnesota, cool :) I've unfortunately never had the chance to go there, but indeed it is pretty close! (admittedly, I had to look at a map; remembering locations has never been my strong point :p )
All those historical bits that were a tad confusing the first time around suddenly become enriching.
Indeed, I remember when I read LotR there were some parts that were confusing to me. I had assumed it was my young age (12, probably) or possibly idiocy that caused me to get confused, but now I have an excuse: "it was the historical bits" ;)

Hi, Big fan of Tolkien and his works. I have read the Hobbit and LOTR several times, starting in probably 1990 or so. Usually read the book at least once a year. I am currently reading the Silmarillion - it's kinda like reading a bible.
How are the History of Middle Earth books?
Any books have more insight on my brethren, the Easterlings? great to be here and I look forward to discussions...

I agree with you about the Silmarillion; it's got about as many names to remember as the Bible too. As for HoME, Christopher Tolkien has not edited and interpreted his father's work in these to make a seamless story, as in the Sil, but instead offers the different versions with comments and notes, so that the reader can visit Tolkien's archives as if leafing through the manuscripts alongside an expert. One of my favourites is the Book of Lost Tales II, which has the Fall of Gondolin - a terrible and magnificent story. I couldn't tell you off hand where you'll find Easterlings mentioned, but there is a HoME index volume.
Again, welcome!

I hope these refferences from "The prologue and appendices to the lord of the rings", HoME XII, will help you:
The southern line of Gondor:
8. Romendakil I At this time Easterlings assailed kingdom.
The heirs of Elendil
But Romendakil being at this time much troubled by assaults of Easterlings sought to attach the Northmen more closely to his allegiance. He took many into his service and gave them high rank. His son Valakar dwelt long among them in the house of [added: Vidugavia] the King of Rhovannion. Romendakil permitted him to wed the king's daughter. The marriage of the heir to a woman of an alien people and without any Numenorean blood had never occurred before, and caused great displeasure. Before Valakar died there was already open rebellion in the southern fiefs. Various claimants to the crown appeared, descendants of Atanatar II. The most favoured especially by the fleet, and ship-folk of the southern shores, was the Captain of the Ships, Kastamir [great-grand- son] grandson of Kalmakil's second son Kalimehtar.
The third age
490. First invasion of Gondor by Easterlings.
500. Tarostar defeats the Easterlings and takes the name of Romendakil, East-slayer.
541. Romendakil slain in battle with a second invasion of Easterlings, who are driven out by his son Turambar.
...
2510. A great host of Orcs, with Easterlings as allies, assail the northern borders of Gondor, and occupy a great part of Calenardon. Gondor sends for help. Eorl the Young leads his people, the Eotheod or Rohirrim, out of the North from the sources of Anduin, and rides to the help of Cirion, Steward of Gondor. With his aid the great victory of the Field of Celebrant is won. Elladan and Elrohir rode also in that battle. From that time forth the brethren never cease from war with the Orcs because of Celebrian. Eorl and his people are given the plains of Calenardon 'to dwell in, and that land is now called Rohan. There the Rohirrim live as free men under their own kings, but in perpetual alliance with Minas Tirith.
...
2757. Rohan is overrun by Orcs and Easterlings. At the same time Gondor is attacked by the Corsairs of Umbar.
Note on the expansion of the tale of the kin-strife on the second edition
The Northmen increased greatly in the peace brought by the power of Gondor. The kings showed them favour, since they were the nearest in kin of lesser Men to the Dunedain (being for the most part descendants of those peoples from whom the Edain of old had come); and they gave them wide lands beyond Anduin south of Greenwood the Great, to be a defence against men of the East. For in the past the attacks of the Easterlings had come mostly over the plain between the Inland Sea and the Ash Mountains. In the days of Romendacil II their attacks began again, though at first with little force; but it was learned by the King that the Northmen did not always remain true to Gondor, and some would join forces with the Easterlings, either out of greed for spoil, or in the furtherance of feuds among their princes.

Hello from Canada!:)
I agree with some of the above posts in which it is said that The Silmarillion is in some ways like the bible. I thought the same thing when I read it for the first time. There are so many names and it is so epic.

Hi e.Blackstar! :)
Some people call it Canuckia here (probably because of the hockey hoopla which I don't partake in myself, not that there's anything wrong with that) lol.
[Me thinks the board was having big problems tonight and I'm almost scared I did something wrong when I tried to upload an avatar, that's when it seemed to go all wonky for me. :o I hope I didn't do anything wrong. Do I have to wait until I have made 100 posts, is that still in effect, or is that just how it used to be? It'll probably take quite awhile before I've made that many posts lol. Just don't have a lot of time.]

Hi all!
First off, I'm *not* Lorien (I've merely hijacked his id), he's a friend of mine and when he found out I was into Tolkien and RPG's he recommended I check out this place and he let me use his account. So, yeah, I'm new here (obviously...), but I've RP'ed a lot before on other fora.
Lorien (the original one), also wanted me to say a couple of things in his stead. He says he's sorry for not having enough time to come back to visit this place (he's been around reading stuff but he doesn't have enough time to RP or anything like that 'cos he's really busy). And, he wants to give a shout out to a couple of people he knows here, and they are (in no order of preference) Talierin, Ciryaher, Chrysophalax, Aerin, Morwen etc.etc. (he says he's sorry if he forgot anyone who was expecting a hello).
So I'll see everyone around (hopefully).

I am completely obsessed with LOTR--but more specifically, Faramir. As role models go, you picked one of the best. Did you know that when Faramir walked into the story, Tolkien had no idea who he was, but instantly liked him? It's as if Faramir had a life of his own already when he entered Tolkien's imagination. I think I read that in 'The Letters of JRR Tolkien'.
Welcome to the forum, Sarah.

A little about me:
Well I'm 16 years old and I live in Canada... I'm sorry to inform you all that I did watch the lotr movies before I had read the books but I have now read them and am halfway through the silmarillion. I just wan you all to know that I do prefer the books by a long shot. (and that's saying something cause I usually hate reading) ;)
Lookin' forward to a great time and hopefully a learning experience with all you educated peoples!

I am a p/t student taking a year out and currently between jobs. Studying maths last year, fingers crossed physics next year.

Hello everybody! I'm Tolkien fan from Ukraine.
I'm 25 and I'm postgrad student in Donetsk National Technichal University atm.
I've been studying computer sciences since I was 16 and, I think, I've become a good programmer.
I enjoy reading (not only Tolkien :) ). My favourite authors are Joyce, Jack London, Heinlein etc.
Tolkien's characters I like best are Finrod and Beren.

P.S. Sorry for my bad English :(
Hello Eamon, glad you joined us. We share a favorite in Finrod. :D

I'm brand new here too, guess we'll both have to be stumbling our way around. ;)
Finrod's a great character - one of my favorites, too. It's really kind of hard not to like him, isn't it? He's just so good.
As for Beren, meh, I can do without. Never was a big fan of humans, though. ;)
And your English is quite good!

Hi,
I'm from Australia and I've been a Tolkien fan since I was a teenager nearly forty years ago.
Lord of the Rings is by far the best book I have ever read and has a poetic and mythical quality that leaves most of the so-called greats of literature in the shade.
I am also interested in ecology and the environment, politics, history and culture. One of the reasons I love the Professor is that he was able to create a world complete with all these features and weave an epic tale about it.
I hope to get to know you all soon and will be joining in discussions and posting a thread soon.

greetings,
Not only am I new, I am also very strange, and a bit of a sporadic poster.
It comes with the genes.
So the usual speel about "how i came to be a craazed lotr fan" goes: My dad read me the book. He then banned me from watching the movies. I, in revenge, bought ALL of Tolkiens books and read them. He then allowed me to watch the movies, by that time the tolkien phenomena had died down, so i missed the wave.
I stored the books and have only recently rediscovered them, several years later. That event combined with summer (and post exam) boredom, lead me inevitably to this site.
so, here I am. ;)

Ahhh... math. Something that was unfortunately required of me in college. I had to suck up to the professor a lot (good thing she was female and an old maid. She pitied me to a point where she allowed me to copy from other people's paper during exams). I had to shift from Computer Science to Computer Management because I was going to be forced to take up Calculus. I nearly failed Analytic Geometry, so I decided to shift while I was ahead. The course still had math--but easy math, as in business math, which I aced!
But I'm also more into the arts. My brothers, however, love math. My newest sister-in-law is a math major and finished Magna Cumlaude.
Welcome to TTF, by the way! :D

I have seen math geeks and writing geeks being equally as well as entertainingly geeky, sometimes in the same person. For myself, left brain type subjects aren't difficult. They're just not as fun. Also, I've never studied, so my approach was always (halfway, the other half would be reading a book) paying attention to teachers, reading textbooks as soon as I got them, and cramming just before tests. Math was annoying because it was the only subject where every question was a new chore, unlike the others, where the entire test ran together. I gots to get back to my book!
Oh, and ---> Greetings, new arrivals, I suppose. *runs away*

I was rubbish at maths, Blerdie, until I did Open University Technology and suddenly had to up my game. I took my problems to the RAF technicians in a nearby pub, and they explained things really well because they could apply the maths to actual nuts and bolts. I learned to write my equations out long hand, then substitute actual processes for the a, b and x that the markers required. I was later told that I am a visual mathematician. If I tried to do maths starting out with a, b and x thingys; somewhere along the arithmetic I always forgot which was which and got totally confused!

Oh, yeah. Maybe that was why I grew to hate math classes. Always asking me to write my work outwards! So boring! I know what I'm doing. I'll show you the finished product, and you tell me if it works. I'd never turn in any first drafts of any writing, either. If I knew that a first draft was an assignment, I'd refuse to do it and wait until the teacher moved on to ordering something finished. Reading notes and earlier versions of stuff from authors is all kinds of fun, but if I write any of it, I certainly wouldn't want it published.

The analogy I have discovered when teaching folks is always the same. The basic entry level Algebra, Trig etc is like going out to Lowe’s or Home Depot and buying tools. When you get further along; that’s when you actually get under the car and start fixing things with those same tools you spent your hard earned money on.

OhI'd never turn in any first drafts of any writing, either. If I knew that a first draft was an assignment, I'd refuse to do it and wait until the teacher moved on to ordering something finished.:D I was like that at school; my initial drawings for art were always done after I'd completed the finished work.

Hello. I've been searching for a good forum to discuss Tolkien, and this forum seems to be beyond any of my hopes. After reading the debate about Feanor in the Debate sub-forum, I immediately decided to join. It is also very surprising that people over 50, and even someone at the age of 71, are participating in this forum. I'm really looking forward to learning a lot from this forum.
As my username suggests, I'm a black metal fan. That Burzum is one of my favourite bands as well as one of my favourite words of Tolkien's creation made it pretty clear for me that I should choose that one as my username.
Some of my favourite characters:
Feanor
Fingolfin
Aredhel
The Nazgul
Galadriel
Sauron
Ar-Pharazon
Tarannon Falastur
Earnur II
Thuringwethil
Ecthelion
Some of the characters I like the least, among the famous ones:
Gandalf
Beren
Thingol
Luthien
Earendil
... actually, any descendent of Thingol for that matter (excluding the line of Elros).
Favourite stories, in order:
Akallabeth
The Fall of Gondolin
The Flight of the Noldor
Narn i Hin Hurin
And I'm racist against the Sindar!:D

Careful! Those of the older generation will whip your butt in any debate. You will most certainly learn alot from them - I know I have. Oh...the "71 year old" you refer to, I expect, is Barliman Butterbur (aka Barley). Def. watch out for him. :D

I don't think I have enough substane to make a thread out of it, heh. Just some small issues, such as Gandalf being too kind (and popular), Earendil basically spending the early part of his life doing nothing but searching for Valinor and begging for the mercy of the Valar (besides the battle with Ancalagon, which is admittedly quite cool), then being given some special status (he becomes a star!!), and Luthien... because she's the daughter of Thingol and is almost super-powerful, Beren becasue he just got a powerful wife. :D Other descendants of Thingol are just pretty boring (Dior, Elwing, Elrond, Elladan, Elrohir, Arwen... I won't include Eldarion, though, since I don't know how he would turn out),... and are descended from Thingol.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Burzum!:) I look forward to hearing more about your interesting opinions of some of the most popular characters in middle-Earth.
Based on black-ball list, I don't suppose you have any use whatsoever for the Vanyar...
Burzum
10-21-2008, 09:06 AM
The Vanyar are a rather strange case; they practically contribute nothing except for the participation in the War of Wrath and some genes. Other than that, the clan is entirely useless.
On the other hand, though, they have some sort of lofty, elite, "don't give a damn" feeling that makes them somewhat attractive at the same time (I am aware that they did give a damn when the Trees died, etc. but I'm talking about the feeling I get from them). The Teleri of Aman has this quality, too, though to a lesser extent. That's why the Sindar are the worst (at least the Nandor, Laiquendi, and Avari seem humble for the most part).
Haleth
11-14-2008, 05:52 PM
Hello!
I lurked here for a few days, and after reading many awesome posts decided to join. I read the Hobbit when I was a child. I read LotR only after I saw the first movie. Then, of course, followed the Silmarillion which I loved; I adore mythology and legends and it's written in a similar style.
Now I've finally gotten my hands on HoME. I just read the Shibboleth of Feanor and enjoyed it muchly, because Feanor was throwing a hissy fit over linguistics. XD
Some favorite characters/peoples:
the Avari - they had the guts to prefer the gritty reality to some far off dreamland
the Eldar - they had the guts to embark on the Great Journey and seek a new life
Dwarves - they make shiny things. I like shiny things.
Noldor - they're such drama queens. I love drama queens.
Sindar - passive-agressive drama queens. Love those too.
Feanor - he's mental
Cirdan - has a wise, old surfer dude vibe going for him
Thranduil - he knows how to live with style. Pitty his son got only the boring genes.
Eowyn - love her because of the whole heroine vs. deserter ambiguity
Haleth - the woman who refused a son of Feanor. You hear that, Caranthir? (Don't take that as a personal affront if you happen to have that username. I'm just being silly.)
Radagast - he's so out of it in LotR. Does everything unwittingly. XD I'm convinced that he's high on some herbs. He's like the neighbourhood pot-head.
Thuringwethil - one word: vampire
Some of the least favorite:
Vanyar - a bunch of non-descript blondes. But then again, maybe they're just playing with them all: they already have Manwe and Varda wrapped around their collective pinky finger...
Frodo - too emo for me, but kudos to him for being the Ringbearer
Aragorn - liked him in the beginning, but then towards the end of LotR he became such a boring perfect character
Arwen - such a non-entity in the books
Anyway, greeting to all and I hope to have a fun time on this forum. :)

Greetings, Haleth person! Our opinions are mostly the same, except that you are probably a bit more neutral than myself, and you are apparently some kind of fan of the sickeningly popular vampires. Ick. I agree with a Yay for Haleth. One of my favorite humans.

Hi, YayGollum. Nice choice of username. In case such information may ever become useful, can you be bribed with fish? Or perhaps rings of world domination if I should happen to come by one?
It's nice to see someone who knows and appreciates Haleth as a character, since often any mention of her gets two responses: "Haleth who?" or "That Rohan boy from the movie?"
Don't mistake me about vampires. I like Thuringwethil because she is like a vampire should be - evil, corrupt and unapologetic about it. I don't really like popular vampire types - the ones who drink blood from wine glasses, listen to depressingly over-dramatic classical music and wangst about their eternal damnation. That really is ick.
Hello, chrysophalax. Indeed, Feanor is a few Silmarils short of sanity. He's very contradictive about the truth he accepts. On the one hand he's like "Melkor is evil and lies all the time!" and on the other hand he's all "But what Melkor said about the Valar, and my half-brother, and the Secondborn... Well, that's true and I believe it!". Craaazy, but makes for an interesting character.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Haleth! You have a wonderfully refreshing and irreverent take on Tolkien's characters, yet it seems you know your way around the overall mythology pretty darned well.
I think you will enjoy yourself here. If you want to have hours upon hours of fun, engage in a dialogue with Yay (who you've already met) over who is the true hero of LOTR.
Not so much if it turns out you both have the same opinion. Wouldn't be much of a debate, would it?:)

Welcome Heleth!
Looking forward to seeing you on the boards. Do you Role Play at all? We always like new people who know Tolkien well, who like to Role Play. :)
Hi, YayGollum. Nice choice of username. In case such information may ever become useful, can you be bribed with fish? Or perhaps rings of world domination if I should happen to come by one?
I'm not sure it is possible to bribe Yay. He's as tricksy as his user-name-sake! ;) However, if you were going to try, you'd have better luck with the Ring of Power.

No, I think that fish would be more likely to work. I, like poor Smeagol, am fairly ascetic. Ruling is more trouble than it's worth, but a nice meal is always welcome. Either way, ah, sure, if you happen upon any spare Rings Of Power, I would be quite pleased to relieve you of their burden.
Towards vampires, your view is understood as well as appreciated. But still. I don't have enough information on Thuringwethil to have much of an opinion on her.
When it comes to Feanor and the hero Gollum, I muchly enjoy endlessly debating. I wouldn't argue over the fact that Feanor was crazy. I'd just argue about how cool he was. I've read lots of classical mythology, and he is a great example of that type of personality. Yay for heroically stubborn pride! Sure, it makes the characters look like idiots, every now and then, but it is plenty epic and fun to read.

I make it a point to know the details, so I can make fun of them better. :D

Sorry, I don't Role Play. I've never even tried it and I don't think I'd be good at it.

I agree with you about Feanor being a good example of the mythological hero type - proud, stubborn, prone to rash action. He's not even an extreme example of that personality, considering the amount of murder and other crazy stuff a lot of mythological heroes were involved in.
Gollum the hero? I suppose I see where you're coming from - he was the one who had the greatest internal struggle out of all the characters, and if he wouldn't have been at Mt. Doom to bite Frodo's finger off, Middle-earth would've been screwed.

Well, two points.
1) You never know until you try it, my new friend.
2) You obviously write well and have an active and creative mind, and those are two things that make great RPers. :)

I joined this place partly because it had a great diversity of minds, with the role-playing sorts being an entertaining example. I didn't think about getting into them until I was invited. I have tried to get other book fans to join in, but my successes have been short-lived. I can merely suggest, since hounding is evil. I didn't think that I'd be good at it, either (I have gotten much better since I started), but it is fun and a good way to show off crazy theories.
Anyways, the Avari - Your point of view makes sense, but I prefer to describe them as ---> I wish that the Tolkien guy had written more about them. He wrote lots about many different characters. Plenty of people get confused by all of those names. Which is to type ---> Why omit the flesh from a whole subculture?
the Eldar - Eh. I'd call them sheep. Greener pastures and a god to lead us? Sure, why not?
Dwarves - The manufacturing of shiny things is their quality of highest note? Sure, that Tolkien dude omitted plenty of flesh from their stories, but I see them as unjustly ignored, due to the prettiness of the elves. Ick. Crazy elves! By what means did they first arrive at the conclusion that Dwarves were animals? They had met Orcs by that time, and knew that they weren't animals. Makes no sense.
Noldor - You are correct. I am not an especially large fan of drama queenliness, though, and could only be called a fan of some individuals. Most are just generic hero sorts.
Sindar - Ugh. You are correct again, but I see very little of awesome in this tribe, beyond individuals. So boring.
Cirdan - Your view is one of many possible conclusions. That Tolkien person didn't write enough about this guy. I have always had my suspicions, though. He was one of the original elves and eventually got a beard, which humans and Dwarves were always making fun of, due to its patchiness. The only other elf that I read of obtaining a beard only got it due to mayhaps being tortured and definitely worked until near death by Mel. I read nothing about any other original elves obtaining a beard. What happened to Cirdan? Was he messed with by Mel, too? There were plenty of brainwashed servants of his that were never found. Or mayhaps he just had a very stressful time with keeping his particular flock out of trouble.
Thranduil - Heh! I have thought little of this guy, but your view is refreshing. Quite true, although I can't be a large fan of his, due to how evil he was to the Dwarves.
Eowyn - I don't love her for that or anything else. There was once a person on this website who made a big rant about how cool Eowyn was, and I got behind it, but I have forgotten it and only think of Eowyn as just another boring hero.
Haleth - I already wrote about her amount of awesome, but I was reminded of a question that mayhaps someone can help me out with ---> Were the Haleth type humans the ones that eventually became the Dunlendings, or have I made that up just to make them look cool?
Radagast - *sniff* Poor Radagast. Easily my favorite wizard, most probably because Tolkien didn't get around to writing much about him. He was undoubtedly hired by Yavanna to fulfill the secondary mission of helping the dwindling Ents out. He found the missing Entwives and made a large deal to them about these great aphrodisiacs he had, but one offended lady smacked him pretty hard, and he was never the same.
Vanyar - Ack! Why have I never thought of that one? Argh! I have only ever thought of them as most ---> That they are just very lucky to have fallen in love with the Valar types before Mel could sway their apparently weak minds towards worshiping him. Dang. I have been blind!
Frodo - I would deny kudos to this character, due to the fact that Eru or the evil torturer Gandalf or somebody apparently forced him to volunteer for the job. After giving that matter zero thought, he did a great job of idiotically allowing the untrustworthy Gollum (believe that he killed some guy named Deagol? Never!) to live, planning on ringing Sauron's doorbell, losing to the cowardly Shelob while armed with that awesome phial and the evil Sting, then deciding to take the One Ring for himself and doing nothing but standing there as the hero Gollum saved the day.
Aragorn - I would agree, except that I never liked the guy. All of those bits of book about him were quite boring. I just wanted to get back to the Gollum scenes. But then, I must always point out that he has my grudging respect for being the only sentient to not fall victim to poor Smeagol's overwhelming pitifulness. The evil sam doesn't count as sentient. Or did he pity poor Smeagol at one point? I don't remember.
Arwen - Of course, but plenty of others were non-entities. Why do you hate this one, in particular? Merely because a large deal has been made of her?

2) You obviously write well and have an active and creative mind, and those are two things that make great RPers. :)
Those are good points; especially, because the second one is very flattering. I'll think about it. :)
YayGollum, that was a long post I enjoyed reading.
Avari - Agreed. Tolkien should've written something about them, preferably, from their own point of view. Part of why I find reading the Silmarillion interesting is because it's written about the Noldor from an obviously biased Noldor POV. Tolkien could've done something really interesting if he presented the history of Middle-earth from a completely different POV.
Eldar - Used to think of them just like you do. Now I guess I can see things from their perspective. Still, they are naive, almost gullible in the way they see the Valar (as always right and perfect beings beyond reproach). E.g. when they see the Great Sea for the first time, they're scared of it, but then Ulmo comes and talks to them, plays some music and suddenly they all yearn to go over the sea. If that's not an act of brainwashing, then I don't know what is.
Dwarves - That I named the manufacturing of shiny things as their primary virtue says more about me than about the Dwarves. I had almost forgotten about the Elves hunting the so called Petty-dwarves. The reason that they did it because they thought they were some beasts just sounds so lame. Weren't the Elves supposed to be the ones with perfect X-ray vision?
Cirdan - I heard a theory somewhere from someone that Cirdan got his beard because or a while he was keeping Narya, the Ring of Fire. It's strange to think that great stress could cause an Elf to grow a beard.
Thranduil - True, he wasn't very hospitable towards the Dwarves. But he wasn't exactly supposed to be the proprietor of a five star inn in the lovely resort of Mirkwood with splendid views on the giant spiders rolling about merrily among the trees. Thranduil was a ruler protecting his people in a land that had grown increasingly dangerous over the centuries. The Dwarves weren't exactly forthcoming with any information that may have helped their cause either. In this case I think the pride and stubbornness on both parties was at fault.
People of Haleth --> Dunlendings - I tried to find some info, and it appears that the Dunlendings were indeed descended from the People of Haleth or at least from the same stock that that house came from. They got the short end of the stick beginning from the time that the Numenoreans came to Middle-earth in the Second Age.
Radagast as the sex therapist for the Ents? That idea is funny and it makes more sense than it should.
Vanyar - You see, they had you lulled into thinking they were just a bunch of harmless, poetry-sprouting blondes. I've been suspicious of them for a while now: no one can be that perfectly boring, there must be something behind it.
Frodo - I still have to commend him and Sam for being able to make it alive to Mt. Doom. It certainly was no walk in the park (I think their trek through Mordor is one of the most depressing things I've ever read).
Arwen - I don't hate her, but she's a wasted opportunity. Even in the Appendices "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen" she doesn't get a glimpse of any real personality. But considering how nobly boring she is, she and Aragorn are a match made in Valinor.

Merely following up on some bits.
Dwarves - Understood. But I am wondering about the Dwarves and what Aule might have included in their unique recipe. In that The Hobbit book, while they aren't as quiet as nasssty hobbitses, they would still easily be able to sneak quite closely by an average human. And then, only Dwarves can tell the difference between their males and females (not even Aule?). Would that have been added to make it harder for Mel to breed and mold them, or did that only happen because Aule wasn't really clear on what Eru's capitalized Children were supposed to look like? They had some magics of their own, so mayhaps attempting to sneak around while making silly elves think they're animals was one trick? I'm just typing crazy type.
Cirdan - Do you have any other information on that Cirdan theory? I don't know why that Ring Of Power would have given him a beard, since they came with powers along the lines of preservation. The idea was put forth that the evil torturer Gandalf was an Ainur type thing under Nienna, and Narya, with its creepy power to inject unnatural hope made the guy a lot less depressing than he would have been, so mayhaps Cirdan was an especially youthful sort, who the ring magically aged? Makes little sense.
Thranduil - I would agree, except that, when I think of this guy's evility, I am mostly thinking about how he was having a great revel, then he evilly as well as magically played around with them, instead of honestly telling them to quit trespassing. Mayhaps he thought they were giant spiders, at first?

Hey everyone I just joined, and well...I saw the movies first and from there I read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. after that the Silimirilion and a bunch of other of Tolkien's books. I like the books better in most everything (except some of the tiniest details) but of the characters, Feanor is my all time favorite. (don't ask me why!) I also like Smeagol! (not gollum very much, but some)

Welcome Eonwise! Intersting username.
You know, I find it interesting how some people talk about Gollum and Smeagol as two different beings, and others talk about then as one it the same...I wonder why we do that?

Hi, I'm new here and you may find it unusual (or not, you tell me!) that I'm from Argentina, an Spanish-speaking country in South America. Well, I'm a quite eager Tolkien fan and I used to be a member of another forum (in Spanish) that was unfortunately shut down. That's how I thought of signing in to a new one and (why not?) an English-speaking one. That way I would also get to know people from other countries and it would be good practice for my language (I'm studying to be a Sworn Translator).
Well, this is my first message and I feel I've already written too much.
Regards!

Greetings!
It is really nice to see Argentinian here! I have some friends from your country, who I met while playing online games! From what I see, your English is much better than theirs! I hope you enjoy your stay here. :D

Thanks a lot, Ingwë!! I appreciate you saying that!!
I'm also thrilled to be here because I've been reading LOTR in its original language (I had read it in Spanish when I was a child) and it's a whole new world. Songs and many other passages are deprived of rich nuances of meaning during the process of translating. The books which enchanted me in Spanish are even more dazzling in English!! And this forum is just the perfect place for me to participate in such discussions as only you, people, can offer!!

What a coincidence! I am reading LOTR in English as well. To be honest, I've started reading it a few times but I used to abandon it due to the lack of time. Reading in English takes more time than reading in Bulgarian, as you might guess :) However, this time I am determined to read it from the first page to the last one!
I fully understand the magic you're referring to. Reading the book in original can't be compared to reading a translation, no matter how good the translator is. I don't really like poems and songs, I've never liked them, not even in Bulgarian, but I just feel other way when reading LOTR in English. My favourite chapter of the Fellowship Of The Ring is Lothlorien. The description of the forest is just awesome, it feels as if you're actually in the forest!
And last but not least, I am studying for IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and I need a lot of practice :p
