The hour of darkness has come upon our world, as it did in the end of the Third age of Middle earth. We must do something to fight this malice that lives in the air we breath, this malice that is used without mercy to its creator. Stand up, and unite!

Well, it was inevitable, I supose. Dont' worry. It'll just be a fad for a while and then we can go back to reading in peace.
But I still can't believe it. ****!

This is the VERY REASON I've hated the idea of a movie since I first heard of PJ's endeavor.

When you think about it, most of those (the above merchandise) will be sold to little kids (i.e. the kid in the third picture). There will be a lot less little kids who've read LotR, so they will have absolutely no idea how much was changed. They must somehow be shown the truth

A light & sound Sting sword? :( That is definately the most depressing thing I've seen this week.

Just as long as they don't make and sell Turin's sword. We'd have a bunch of dead kids on our hands courtesy of a talking, blood-thirsty sword.

Yeah...well, wait till you see the Frodo Fries and the "Onion Ring to rule them all", let alone the Green Gollum mint shakes. Yeah, it's gonna be like that, you won't be able to swing a dead cat in KayBee Toys without hitting some bastardization of the Lord of the Rings. New Line wants to make their money back on the first film so that everything them make on the next two is pure profit.
What *I* want to see is a Big Flaming Eye doing ads for ClearEyes...that would rule. *Snicker* You just have a big C.G. eyeball and Ben Stein's voice...

I hope I don’t get flamed for this, but I’m actually looking forward to the action figures. Of course, the moment I get them home, I’m repainting the hair of Boromir, Legolas, Sam, Merry, and Aragorn, but other than that... ;)

lol!!!
soon there will be lord of the rings colouring books and stickers..
i don't know why they r doing all the swords and stuff because i don't think many young kids r going to see it ..it looks a bit scary for young kids..and it is rated PG 13+
Greymantle
10-09-2001, 03:10 AM
Naw, it makes no difference. If toys targeted to children under seven are from rated R movies, they still sell. Strange, but true.
Talierin
10-09-2001, 03:20 AM
They don't care what the film's rated, they'll make toys, and the parents will let their young children see the movies. I went to JP3 again last week and there was a mother with two kids around 3 and 5, and they were laughing everytime someone got killed.
All I intend to get is a couple posters, a few action figures, and maybe some t-shirts. One of those replica swords they're coming out with would be neat too, but I probably won't have money for one.

Mike: Hey man, I don't pick on YOUR hobbies!
As for the rating or scarieness of films and the production of toys, I direct your attention to the Alien and Pedator Action Figures...and the fact that one year I had 4 different little kids (6-12 years old) come to my door one Halloween wearing Freddy Kruger costumes they had bought at the store. Mind you, on a side note, this happened the same year that a "Mother's Group" was demanding the removal of the "Serial Killers Trading Cards" from the market...

...Oh I expect it to get really silly. Nothing would surprise me at this point as New Line Cinema scrambles to market the movie. In fact, word on the street is that the release might get delayed, I suspect that there were problems getting the Effects done. Back filling all those scenes and fixing the holes left by full sized men being shrunk takes a lot of time, even with computers. New Line doesn't mind this at this point because it means they can sell more stuff related to the movie to the allready installed fan base without the allready installed fan base having badmouthed the movie yet.
Voice Over:"You will ride like the wind on your new Honda Shadowfax"
Long shot of Gandalf, white robes fluttering as he guns the motor and speeds off on the Motorcycle, Nazgul giving chase...
We can only guess at how far they will go in selling every cheesey piece of **** you can silk screen the Movie Logo on...
"...with elegant styling and traditional Elvish writing, this birdbath is an exact replica of Galadriel's mirror, through which Frodo and other's gazed into the future..."
Hold on to your wallets kids, PJ and the gang are gonna try to wrest every last dollar out of this one on the road to the $200 Million that they need to recoup before thinking about releasing the next movie...
"...and the Lord of the Rings(TM) Palantir(TM) makes a whimsical Night Light for the little Hobbits(TM) in your house. Simply touch the base and the Quartz Hallogen bulb inside magically lights to show the way through the darkest tunnels...Batteries not included, some assembly required"
"Sting" letter openers..."One Ring" inlfatable pool toys...Slippers that look like big hairy Hobbit feet. It's gonna get really scary out there kids...

I only intend to buy a couple posters, and maybe a couple action figures, and that will be it, unless they come out with something else I might want, which is highly unlikely.

At a a bookstore not far from where I live you can get M.E. figures and the Rings, but they have always had it, well, probably not always, but at least the last 5-6 years..

I have to admit...it would be fun to do a First Person Perspective "shoot `em up" Twitch Game based on Middle-earth...if for no other reason then because as a Hobbit your point of view would be from so much lower then everyone else's...Heheheh

The only reason why I would buy the action figures is for the medieval clothes. I'm addicted to anything with nice medieval clothing.:D

I'm not totally against marketing LoTR (that is, or course pre-PJ), because they are based on the book and are usually limited to small figurines. It is the cheesy Hollywood/Wal-Mart marketing hype inspired from PJ's version that is soon to come that I fear. The kind based solely for profit only.
Arwen action dolls, hobbit happy meals, glow in the dark Stings, all wrapped up in an open cardboard box with the MOVIE'S insignia on it! It screams, "FOR PJ, NOT JRR! IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MOVIE!"
That to me would make Tolkien roll in his grave.

GREAT, A LIGHT SABER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(*sigh*)
but yes, i suppose we should have been ready - this is not the first movie to come out, we know what the advertising campaignis like. the bigger the movie, the bigger is the campaign (and worse it many ways). UNLESS of course we are paying too much attention to it: no matter how good the movie will turn out, it will be JUST ANOTHER MOVIE... and it too will go down in history.
on the other hand, if we didnt' care, we would probably not be having this conversation here today.
