YAY! At least Andalusians are more stocky than arabs- bit on the small side usually (at least the ones I've seen in real life are) But in all the trailers it shows him as white! Arrgh! SILVER! S-I-L-V-E-R!

Oooo, there are 3 andy stallions at the barn where I work... 1 is bright pure, beautiful white, the other is bright white with a few dapples and a dark grey mane, and the last is dappled greyish silver, but hes might still whiten up a bit,, as he's young. I have yet to see a silvery horse, perhaps they could have used a bit of cg to silver up shadowfax? *Shrug*. Hrmmmmmm.

I have a photo of an actual 'silver' andalusian...it was from a magazine (Equus) article on show grooming, written by whoever wrote "Grooming to Win" can't remember her name tho...Susan something? Photo was by Bob Langrish I *think*. if I find it I will scan it to this thread if that's ok with everone.
The thing that gets me about the movie is that they made Asfaloth grey, when in the book he was white, and (it appears) Shadowfax is going to be white...sigh...do hope they CG in some silver.

Very nice work yourself! I like the pointilism used on the coat of the horse - great movement in the main and extraneous hairs as well :)
Yes I am a professional artist of sorts - I am the webmaster/artist at thereandbackagain.net and do most of the illustrations there. Glad you like - I will post more when I have time - I have posted a few in the past here but in another section...a miscellaneous section of sorts I think...

this is the best drawing i have already scanned. the shading came out all choppy, but it looks pretty in real life, honest. its a lot smaller too, so that could probably explain the choppy stuff.

It's very wonderful, I like the hair shading/colors. One tip ofr useing a scanner, is to try and find where in the program you can shrink the out put size- that's what I have been doing, and it really helps keep the 'blown up fuzzies' away.
Goldberry344
12-17-2002, 12:07 AM
what program do you use? could work...will try
Shadowfax
12-17-2002, 12:12 AM
I have an hp something or other...
but, on mine, when you're in the screen that controls the scan, right below the little box that says "select output type" is a bow with a ruler icon that says "select output size" when you click that, it goes to a new screen, and you have three options 1) to use original size 2) scale size by percentage 3) manually adjust length and width, and if you only do one, it will automatically adjust the other in proportion.
I generally use 50% scale decrease or more for my pics, I would reccomend experimenting.

i tried, but cause i saved it as a choppy ucky thing, it isnt changing, as i have not got a good graphics program. *laughs at Paint*
and thank you v. much, Elehdwen. I drew he to be Goldie, my RP character, but my grandmother said she looks like me. *frowns* i think not, as my eyes arent really green, and as i look nothing like the drawing, but hey.
Shadowfax
12-18-2002, 12:32 AM
You might have to scan it again, then try and fiddle with the size before you save it, that's what I have to do. I don't know how to change the existing file size.

I haven't been able to get online and post for a while, so I'll just put in my bit about turkeys and get us off the subject a while.
Yes, wild turkeys can fly. *lol* I don't know exactly how far, but I've seen them do it. We have twelve turkeys that were hatched and raised practically in my back yard, and they come by every day. The feather I have I found floating on my pond, so I picked it up (I couldn't help it, I really like feathers, and it was soooo pretty floating around on the pond ^^ ). I think it would be cool if I could get it to work, then if I find a feather from some of the pheasants around here (hopefully one of their tail feathers... sooooo pretty) then I could make it work.
My neighbors actually have a turkey's tail feather that they made into a quill pen, and it works too, cuz they have some of that old-fashioned ink and everything. but if I want a swan feather, I have to go down to the Dells...
Okay, back to pics. I just wanted to post my bit on turkeys. ^^

The nativity one's nice too. It's relief, isn't it, rather than free-standing?
I'm posting a picture of Glorfindel I did in Word Paint. He also appears in the greetings card thread wearing a santa hat (sacrilege, I know. Sorry!).

It's lovely, Shadowfax! Strong lines and shading - it takes guts and skill to do that.
I used to get told off for drawing in academic classes at school. Your teachers just don't appreciate your talent - why do you need maths when you can draw horses? (we put an 's' on math in the UK).
*SPOILER* By the way, what do you think of all those magnificent horses in TTT? (even if they don't match the book descriptions) And what about Legolas' leap onto the back of Gimli's horse in the Warg battle? - Answer in pictures, then it's a legitimate question in this thread.

(I'll leave it up for a week or so... as usual) Is it charcoal? Strong lines and bold tones are "in" at the moment (at least in the UK they are), in contemporary fine art.

I am afraid I hated Leggie's leap. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ON A HORSE LIKE THAT, ELF OR NO! GAH! *ahem* sorry got a bit riled up there. I mean, It is possible, and actually quite easy to leap on a galloping horse if one does it correctly. (I have done it, and I have several friends who went quite far in the vaulting [trick riding to the layman] world, so I know what I'm talking about)But the way Legster did it, the horse would have fallen over on him. I was waiting for it to happen when I saw it. I guess PJ thought it would look cooler than his spindly elven legs doing a correct kick-leap onto the horse, instead of swinging around like a monkey.
Shadowfax was good, I suppose any enjoying watching any white horse is a bit spoiled for me, as I know how much it takes to get them that bright. Many many bottles of bluing (Goldberry knows what I'm talking about!) I loved the tack and everything in Rohan, and how they managed to put horses into anylittle detail (like Eomer's helmet, anyone else notice that?) I disliked Brego on association with Arries little wet dream sequence. (I wish they had more hobbits, and not so many hot guys killing orcs- they wasted sooo much time on that, they could have had more good scenes with Frodo, Sam, and actually given Treebeard a personality. But I did love the horses and everything, i think that was your original question;)

Everybody clapped at the part where Legolas jumped on the horse. I thought they were all a bunch of 'tards, or Elven teeny boppers.
Did anyone else clap when yall went to see it?

Yes, everyone clapped, and I wanted to scream at them all, "THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE! DO YOU KNOW WHAT CG IS???"

hey people!
yes... it's me... please don't die of shock. i haven't been on here for ages (long, loong story, very self pitying, you don't want to know)
anyway, i think that your art is just getting better all the time, all of you. man, i need to come here more often.
i need to go draw!
but i gotta say, i loved the movie. it looked to me like they did legolas's leap in rewind (he jumped off the horse, and they rewound that so it looked as if he jumped on), but really, running in front of a horse cantering is a bit dumb even for an elf.
Eledhwen
12-22-2002, 06:36 PM
I posted about this in Beorn's "Oh God, it was awful!" thread in the Guild of Tolkienology. Every time they try to show Legolas' superhuman gymnastic ability they get the timing wrong somehow, and it looks contrived.
On the point of people cheering in a cinema - I've never known this. Is it just an American problem? Maybe I pick different viewing times from these idiots.
Caerlin
12-23-2002, 12:37 AM
Dear All
Feeling great envy as we here in Oz land do not get to see @ Towers till after Xmas. As for the "leap" you are talking about....two main problems....
1) To make a movie using real actors limits the fantasy aspects as we are limited by our human-ness, and the reality of laws of gravity and motion etc
2) We are taking here about a tale set in Middle Earth which is not our own and therefore within which the same rules do not apply...to expect things to occur according to the material reality is not on.
If I read what is termed 'Hard' Sci-Fi then i expect that everythig in it will eventually/potentially exist. If I read fantasy....nothing has to conform to the here and now, only be consistent with the world created by the author.
Yeah i know its a pain when the ability of film lets down the imagination by its sometimes awkward renditions but what the heck....ultimately the determinant as to whether a film gets made or not is its saleability.
Trying to compare the book with the film can be likened to trying to compare Harry Potter with LOTR. You just can't because they are two really really different things (genre apart).
Cheers
Caerlin

The thing that got me about the leap, was that it could have been done for real, and looked just as cool, without all that swinging around like a monkey.

Man, Isenho! U can't really be 15?? I will really have to do some catching up if I wanna be that good when I'm 15 (in less than 2 months). I find it really hard to accept that there are people better than me!
I know, I know, I'm too competitive! Can't help it.
Anyway
Tal: How do you do such magnificent things on the computer?? The only "artistic" thing I know so far is Paint! There really is no hope....

Great news on the Shadowfax pic- my school (whose mascot is 'The Colts' has picked it to be the subject of a mural in the cafeteria. Imagine it six feet high! Whee! also, I am working on a perncil rendering of it on a v. large peice of illustration board. The material for that one was a history worksheet. Don't you just love it when you're doodling in class and it turns into one of the best things you've ever done, but on crappy wrinkled paper? Gah! the frustration of it all!

No, the mural is actually going to be black (I'm not painting it much, they're hiring someone to airbrush it up there, then I get to do the details) as our colors are red and black (YUCK!)

Does anyone remember the color sketch of Merry and Pippin I did way back when? I think it's still on the first page or something...anyways, it turned into a black and white graphite rendering. Here it is. P'raps someday I'll try to make a painting... It was hard to get a balance, I wanted people to be able to see them, but the elven cloaks are supposed to hide people. Did I do a good job? (Be honest!)
This is my favorite scene in the whole series...They had better have it in the RotK, since they cut it from TTT...grrr...I hate Helm's Deep now, it took to much away from the hobbits, IMHO.

awsome attention to detail on the horse! nice shading and smoothing. the head may need some work, right now it looks a bit flat. overall when i saw this piece, i was amazed!

Thanks! The original is less than 7 inch tall (on A4 paper) done with a fine black pen - I have just realised if I crop the sides it will be viewable full screen at normal size (duh!). I did it after re-reading the page-and-a-half description bit in LOTR, it was my favourite part at the time.

nice profile there Goldberry. you do know some about proportions and etc. tho the coloring should have followed the countour of the face. good job no doubt

It's a very nice profile, Goldie, that's something I have not been able to master. As for horses, I've been drawing them for eighteen years and just now they are starting to look decent. So DON'T GIVE UP!!! Practice makes perfect, even one's teachers do get mad at one for doodling on assignments.
Though in all fairness to teachers, I had one who would write comments and critique my 'art' that decorated his worksheets. He was sooo cool.
Goldberry344

yeah, i know what you're saying, isenho. my 8th grade art teacher told me that all the time, but i get bored of going in the same direction all the time. so i usually skech something then leave it be.
and i did try a horse, andi t came out, once...here it is. tis the only horse i've ever beena ble to do, but yay.

Goldberry, that's a great horse!
I promise you, Goldberry, I could never draw horses, but when my art teacher explained how to draw anything it really helped. And it also helps that I'm mad about horses....
I should post pictures of my two, they're gorgeous! Ok, one of them's gorgeous and the other's quite ugly, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder!;)

Shadowfax
12-30-2002, 08:49 PM
Yes, a bit out of proportion, but it add to the character of the piece. I love that style, done with all those lines. many of my fav LotR illustrations were done in that style. It's something I never got that hang of. Way to go, e-q!
And now, my own illustration (no, horses, sorry! but if you go to my gallery at elfwood [hint, hint] there's several) of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum on the stairs of Cirith Ungol. Hope you like! How's the cloth? Most of my scribblings right now are clothing and fabric practice.
Goldberry344
12-30-2002, 09:35 PM
ohmygosh, shadowfax that is awesome. i love the shading you used and gollum looks sooooo skinny. it is utterly super. *dies*
yay....i drew another horsie. my mom heard me complaining about my lack of horse drawing skills an got me this "how to draw horses" book. not very helpful as far a technique goes, but it had some good pictures to copy, so here is this one.

Well, *I* think your stuff is worthy, Tal! Once I figure out how to reccomend other people's galleries I'll put yours up.
One thing that got me, I thought for sure that the one with Frodo and Sam would get more attention- everthing about it is better than Merry, whose horse's head is waaaay too small, I still cringe when I look at it.

Shadowfax i saw it on the mod's choice! how lucky! you got the last mod choice for 2002! lol
i might join elfwood AGAIN but the bad thing is that the have a limited size for the picture right? if it's too big, they decrease it?
liked that Sam and Frodo! again your shading of cloth is wicked
great job on the horses all! :D :D
Talierin
01-01-2003, 05:37 AM
They don't decrease it for you, they tell you that it's too large and you can shrink it yourself with their resizing tool. If you try to submit a pic that's too large, they'll tell you and won't upload it.

You people are about the only people (save my art teacher) who give good criticisms! Seriously!
I know the horse eye doesn't have much life, but I copied it from a mag so it's exactly like that pic, which was not very lively.
And the other horse is the first I've drawn without copying a picture or something, so that's why it's out of proportion!! (That's my excuse anyway!:p )
And finally I am working on something that isn't a horse!! Yay me!:D

Wow, this thread really got active! It's good to see all these new faces (or maybe they're old, but they're quite new to me *lol*). I went rummaging through my old notebooks and things, because, let's face it, my room was getting to be quite a mess! ^^''
Well anyway, I found this old little notebook with a poem in it that I barely remember writing. And after reading it, I just couldn't believe that I did it. Now I want your opinion. I think I started it being something that I didn't mean for it to turn out to be, but it works well enough.
((there's a note written at the top that reminds me that it was a half-forced attempt))
'Sleepless'
Lond days pass,/nights fly by./And sometimes when/I watch the sky/I get the feeling.
The feeling that/I'm not alone,/the feeling of/the Earth's true tone./The beat of life.
And when the life/isn't mine,/I get the feeling-/A heart on the line./A prize has come.
But what has come/is easily lost,/That hearty fire/turned to frost./Do not be bitter!/Your foul winter/will create another./But when you've found/your inner summer/butterflies fly and/birds will flutter.
And just as you watched/clouds fly by,/in your heart the/wint'ry winds will quickly die.
Note: I can't tell if "prize" is really "price", so I took the best guess I could...

Very good gff, both the poem and the sketch. I think (but don't take my word for it) that that's the first poem we have on here! I can't write like that, no matter how hard I try. I can never rhyme and still get a lovely meaning! Good work!:)
Oh, and Elven Tears the paint I use is gouache. It's expensive (but it was a present so I don't mind!), it comes in little tubes of colours, and I like the fact that it's easy to work with. You can also get it to look like watercolours if you put enough water in.
Now I'm all motivated I'll look for my best (and only ;) ) poem. it's a bit rubbish though but I'll see if I can find it!

thanks for the welcome :) i had a look at ur art gallery site shadowfax, awesome stuff.. and the gandalf Isenho has on his posts, top work, very realistic. i do have some stuff i could submit, but im afraid i havent the foggiest idea of how to post a pic here. :p lol

well about posting pictures, there are 2 ways, either attach it to a post from your hard drive (i dont like cuz they limit the size)
or go to a site, (IE: www.deviantart.com) and submit your art there and just give us the adress if your done!

Hi. This is my first post here. I like all your artwork, and was wondering if anyone has a drawing of the Company of the Ring (minus Gandalf) all blindfolded and led by the elves. I think it would be a cool picture, and I haven't seen one ever like that. Even at night-time they slept blindfold, and that would look strange.
Just a guess, I am not an artist and wish I had the talent.
goofoofighter
01-14-2003, 05:21 PM
greypilgrim, you are very welcome to be here. And as for talent, it is learnable. I could try the drawing you want to see, but be warned - I am not very good at humanoids... But yeah, it would be interesting to see. They show some sort of blindfolded travel somewhere, I don't remember if they have any in the FOTR extended version, but I'm almost positive there's some in TTT.
Scanning will not work with my scratch pic, but I found a digital camera to use. The flash seemed to give the picture a new life and fire to it, it looks pretty cool in the preview. I'll get it up ASAP for ya'll. :)
I wish I could see these sites you people talk about, but at home I usually don't get enough time on my slow compu, and I'm pretty sure that at school here it's blocked.

I found it on some other site, I have the address on a document at school, but not on me now. I'll just save it to a disk and put it on my computer when our A and D drives get fixed (neither work at the moment).
Horses are indeed sooooo beautiful, I've been drawing them since I was three, I swear. But once again I wish I could draw them more realistically, but everything I draw ends up sort of cartoon-ish. Is there a way I can change that?

Well, unless you have acess to real horses, I would recomend going to your local toystore and getting several "Breyer" model horses. All of the Breyer models are accurate and have been made by premier equestrian sculptors. Because the 'tradidtionals' (big ones) are really expensive (about $30 US) I usually get the 'stablemates' size- they are small and come in gift packs, I've seen them five for ten dollars, but the price may have gone up.
Also, go to a University book store and get an equine anatomy manual for vetrinary students. That's what I have done lately, and it's helped immensely.
I generally steer clear of "How to Draw" books, as they generally only give you a limited repertoire of poses, and the anatomy books really help understanding of how the muscles work and interact with the bones.
But remember- the model horses HAVE to be Breyer...as a model horse conossiuer (read: horse crazy girl who used them as equine substitutes for many years) I know that they are the best for acuracy- no Barbie models, please! I hope this helps some.

Yeah, Breyer models are just beautiful. But they aren't sold here in South Africa... I've only seen them on catalogues!:( But I have probably about 50 toy horses, none brilliant but I loved them.
Yes, horses are extremely noble, but can be sooo stubborn! Tried to do a utility class at my show today, and, well, Moz just was not impressed. If my mark was changed to a percentage I think I would've got 20%. But yet I love him to bits.... I wonder about myself sometimes!!
Well, keep arting!

woa it appears that you OWN a horse! cool!
Shadowfax
01-20-2003, 10:14 AM
I *did* own a horse (I've ridden since 2nd grade) but I finally realised that it was time to sell her when I was looking through my vid library of film of me on her, and it struck me that about 95% of the footage was of me clinging to her back as she cavorted about the ring. Oh, and it was always accompanied by my mother's insightful narrative "Starlet's feeling a bit frisky today... "

Hey Tal- I was just wondering if your elfwood gallery was down- I can't access the site at all.

Yeah, I've got 2 horses *hugs my horses!*. The reason I have 2 is that I was really sick last year (you don't want to know!) and my parents bought me this sweet animal. He has the best nature. Then I found out I was inheriting some money *yay uncle!* and this amazing horse came along, and, well, I took a loan from my parents! I'm busy drawing them both at the moment.:)
You can have no idea how much I love them!

Well, in the guild of elves there are ranks. And I think a lot of them do rpg's, at least the g of elves does. But neither of these really fit into art, do they? I mean, we could have ranks, but there isn't much of a point and it would be *so* *unfair* to have me ranked lowest!!!
I think the guild is functioning fine!!!:)

Hello everyone! I'm new here... I recently did an Eowyn picture (Miranda Otto based) for a friend who needed some cheering up, and I'm rather pleased with it... came out alright. I realize that I could have made some things better, but by the time that I got that far- I couldn't easily change things. So... my sister really enjoyed it and suggested that I post it somewhere; we've been looking for a good site to post art, and this one looks promising.
What I really want is for my stuff to get out there for people to see. I'd love reviews, from any of you- criticism is fine, I'm pretty confident so don't worry about being too "harsh".
Do any of you know a site where I can upload pictures onto an individual webpage? I usually use boomspeed, but I haven't been able to get it working for months now, and I tried attaching this picture that I did (see beginning of post :D ) but even though it's saved as a .jpg it's apparently too big... hmmm.
Any help would be appreciated- I'm not the most computer savvy person.
leggysnow
01-23-2003, 02:30 AM
OOH wait! My sister and I found a way! Mwahahaha.
There are TWO pictures- they're the same... but... the first time that I uploaded it, it was the wrong size. So "Eowyn Again" (lol) is the larger copy. You can look at either one, of course. I just think it looks better bigger. :D

Greetings and Salutations, Leggysnow! I can see you're going to be a wonderful addition to our humble 'guild'. As for places to post, you could go on elfwood http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/elfwood.html (both talerin and I have gallerys- follow the link in my sig to see mine, leave a comment *hint, hint* ;)) or Epilogue (talk to Isenho about it, I tried to figure it out today, but I found the format confusing) Also deviant art, Isenho has a buncha stuff on there. But again, I found the format confusing. (That doesn't mean anything, I find alot of things confusing. Like how to run the blender, for example)
Talierin
01-23-2003, 07:00 AM
Yeah, Elfwood's great *hint hint check out my gallery, link's in my sig*
I did get a gallery at deviant, but that site is *really* slow for me, so I'm prolly not going to do anything with it.
Shadowfax
01-23-2003, 07:46 AM
Heeheehee...something funny just happened- i managed to join Epilogue (I know I'm not good enough, but if I manage to get domething published it's a good bench mark) and my Frodo/Sam/gollum pic got a rejection because 'the feet are not in proportion' I nearly wet myself laughing when I read that. I know the heads aren't in proportion, etc, and that it isn't good enough, but shouldn't a mod for a fantasy site know what a hobbit is?
I also wonder just how much time they spend on it- an example, I just submitted the Minas Tirith pic- again, not good wnough quality, but I wanted to see what was wrong with it, and I had another browser window open to "submission status" after my pic was finished uploading I IMMEDIATELY refreshed the submission status window- we're talking several seconds here- and the pic already had a rejection. Just how many poor souls are chained to their computers to check pictures at such a fast rate? :) Do you know how big it is, Isenho?
Isenho
01-24-2003, 03:22 AM
well shadowfax! i know that the people who check out work are actually actual members on the site, IE james brown is a moderator and he has his gallery there and as do many, and I would say its REALLY big because i too had mine accepted/rejected in a matter of seconds. freaky!
yeah dont worry if your gets rejected, my Freedom got rejected first! they said the anatomy was off, so i made the picture smaller so it's harder to know there was anatomy error. got accepted on second try! hee hee

Hi people, this is my second visit as I suddenly found some inspiration from somewhere :) - finished this today.
This pic (like my other one) doesn't scan well either.... on paper it's about the same sixe as a computer screen, but all my detail has disappeared :(
btw the black 'spike' right at the top was a small scribble... I tried to 'hide' it but it just got worse! :D

Of course you can! When ever you want to post something creative, just start a new thread in the Guild of Artists forum entitled "Lantalasse's Art Gallery" or something like that. Poetry and Photos are always welcome. I hope you have a great time in the guild!

You have to scan it in pieces and then stick them together in Photoshop or another image program. It's a pain.

Hey, I would like to join. I am an artist in many ways. I can do a great picture when I'm inspired, I write poetry, play about 6 or 7 different instruments, sing, dance, do drama, write, etc. um... I don't know if anybody applied for it yet, because I don't really wanna spend 30 minutes looking over 32 pages of posts, yet I'm a great person to consult with. I think I could settle alot of arguements, and be of moral support, so, if nobody has applied for it, could I be the Creative Rights Manager?
leggysnow
02-13-2003, 01:48 AM
six or seven instruments? that's impressive! what instruments do you play? i've been playing the flute for quite a few years myself, but that's about it... :)

You need 100 posts first, and when you get those, go to User CP on the row of buttons at the top of the board, then click on Edit Options, and the avatar thingy is at the bottom of that.
elfgirl
02-13-2003, 02:39 AM
leggysnow,
I play the Flute, the Harmonica, the Keyboard/Piano, the Ukilaile, the Recorder, the Drums, the Xylophone, and the Oceana. A few you might not be familiar with, but I'm sure you can play the Keyboard and the Xylophone if you have been playing the flute for a few years. :counts quickly: It's eight instruments. Huh.

leggysnow
02-13-2003, 10:46 PM
yeah, i can pick out a tune on the piano.... :p used to play the recorder quite well though- then i switched to flute. been playing for... 8 years now? yup. think that's right. something like that. fun fun.
*sigh* i've been dying to get outside and do some watercolor stuff, but it's... 4 degrees out right now. wait- no. -9 with windchill.
So i'll pass.

i'm a bit jealous though- my best friend is going to hawaii next week- i've ordered her to take mass pictures so that i can work from some of them... hehehe!

Well, I haven't been on here for a while!
Happy valentines day to all for yesterday. :p
Artwork lately? Zilch, none. Ok, I've done a bit but it's rubbish. And then there's the school rubbish which is worse than usual rubbish cuz the art teacher hates me. :( she really does and I don't know why!
Well, everyone, the artwork is lovely. Hopefully I'll be able to post some of my own but unlikely.

Um... I thought the leader was Adeilya!!! I mean, if you look at the beginings of these threads, it seems that way. Also, I might post a song on her, sometime. I doubt it, though. I'm very shy about stuff like that. It's more likely that I'll post poetry, or writing...

Hi HobbitFeet! Welcome to the guild. The basic rules are:
1.any form or subject can be posted, art doesn't have to be Tolkien related
2. please keep with the forum rules about the level of 'adultness' of the art, this is an all ages forum
3. Start a new thread for your art gallery, and name it something like, "HobbitFeet's Gallery"
4.Be nice
5. have fun!
