View Full Version : Guild of Artists...Join Me!
Adeilya

Hello everyone and welcome! *Bows* I am Adeilya, leader of this guild, appointed so by Elessar leader of the Arch-Guild of Artisians. :D Come in and take a load off! *ushers you into a room filled with colorful decorations, a stage, tables, a small bar with drinks, and big, fluffy multi-colored pillows that adorn the ground* Allow me to tell you a bit about this guild:
We are artists. Artist does not limit you to just artwork. Of course, submitting artwork is a very good thing! You see these walls? They're bare. I want all your artwork filling them. :) It can be anything from abstract to realistic to 2D to 3D to design work (clothes, rooms, etc.) to impressionistic to surrealistic to sculpture to watercolor to pastel...I think you get my drift. There's the attach file button or if you have a website just bursting with artwork you can just put the link up. Also I want this to be a place of enjoyment for people who just enjoy being around fellow artists. We have a stage that you can perform anything you want- poetry, stories, monologues, songs, dances, and the like. If anything, let this just be a place where you can express your creativity and have discussions on artwork, theatre reviews, books, music, and anything like that.
So I suppose you're wondering about positions that are open to be filled. There are only three. Okay here goes:
1. House Manager- First I would like someone just to manage this room where we meet. I give that person permission to decorate, re-arrange, coordinate, hand out flyers about different events, etc. etc.
2. Stage Manager- This person would just coordinate things for performances...if someone wants to have a performance where people come and watch, make sure you get it OKed through me, then set dates, and get everything together that you want. (Ex. Say you want a poetry night, you set that up.)
3. Creative Rights Manager- This would probably the least clear cut out of all. There are bound to be some arguements on artwork or poetry or something that's gonna come up. This person would help settle them. I would appreciate a pretty open minded person for this.
***Note: All managers would have to clear things through me first.***
Also for all you people who decide NOT to join (and what are you smoking anyway?) just know that if you want to throw a party or have a special event we have decorators for hire here. :)
So that's it! Join! You know you want to. I know there are some artists hiding in this forum...come! Come and be merry! ;)
P.S.-Middle Earth discussions/artwork/performances/whatever is very much so encouraged. But unless I'm ordered otherwise, this place is to express anything you wish.

Is it OK if we post photo's we find of people, animals or places of ME? (I'm mainly thinking about animals, as I have an awsome one of a truly silver horse that I think looks just like yours truly;) )
Elfarmari

I like art, but I'm not incredibly good at it. I prefer music (i.e. piano or drums). Any use for that? I'm a member of the Musician's guild, but as that guild currently does not do anything, could I help here?
Adeilya
04-02-2002, 04:52 PM
Elenya- ...find some way to get them on here! We love art. Hehe :) But of course, come in come in and sit down.
Shadowfax- Photos are most certainly welcome.
Elfarmari- Musician, painter, photographer, it makes no difference to me, you are always welcome here. You can post anything you want (if there's some way to get links to sound files that would be probably best if you want your music heard) Or you could always just hang around here and provide us with music and talk of music. :) What kind of drums do you play? I play drums too- all kinds. (trap, conga, african...and also just lots of weird percussion instruments.)
Elfarmari
04-02-2002, 06:29 PM
Thanks, I think I'll just stick to talking about music; I don't have a way to record it. I mainly just play quads or snae dum in marching band or drum set for pep band (during basketball games) or jazz band.

I have recently finished several drawings, I have a scanner, but I have no idea how to post attachments:confused:! Could anybody tell me how? I and mine would be forever in your debt! Thankyou.
Adeilya
04-05-2002, 03:57 PM
Okay, first scan it and put it in a file. (remember the file you put it in.) Next come here. And do the whole, "Reply to Post" thing. Once you're in the reply to post area and you can type and stuff, near the bottom is a spot that says "attachments". Next to the word attachments there is a blank white box and then a button that says "browse". Hit "browse". You are browsing your computer files. go to the file that has the picture, double click the picture so the name goes into that little white box. Then I think all you have to do is submit your reply. :)
P.S. This goes for all of you- make sure your pictures are in a format that can be displayed. (i.e. gif, jpg, zip, bmp, or jpeg)

V V GOOD shadowfax!!! Well done, even my brother said they were good! (He's really good at drwing stuff, might post his one wolf that he drew)
Will try to draw horses (all I can draw, apart from cartoons which I'm good at) But will only do in black and white... I can't really draw, got 71% (cringe!) for art this term... *ashamed*
elvish-queen
04-14-2002, 12:03 PM
On second thought, maybe I won't do those horses, been trying and I can't get that 'expression' on Shadowfax's face (the horse, not you SF, don't worry)
I'm pathetic! *breaks down in tears*:(
elvish-queen
04-14-2002, 03:55 PM
How do you imagine a horse of the nazgul's mane and tail would be??
Might have something almost worthy...
elvish-queen
04-14-2002, 05:02 PM
There you go, took me all afternoon to do that! (amongst looking after my 5 year old cousin)
Please take into consideration I am 14 and don't laugh!:(
The tail is definately not right, and it would look better with a lot of black not just thin outlines but hey!
elvish-queen
04-14-2002, 05:33 PM
Ok, I attacked it with a black koki, looks a bit better now, whad'ya think??
By the way, I never formally asked to be let into the guild! I offer my humble apologies and ask to be allowed a part in your guild!

Ahhh you guys are all so good! Yipee! I'm excited. :) My watercolor of the Shire is still hanging in our hallway at school, but I will be sure to scan it in once I get it back. And then I've had no time to draw lately. :( But keep it coming! I love it! *floats around*

Elvish-queen- loved the pic! I'm thinking about doing a drawing of a nozgul horse in full battle armor (That way the horse is covered up and you guys won't be able to tell I can't draw horses worth a damn!)

04-16-2002, 07:27 PM
In this pic, I tried to convey the moral support the hobbits give one another, and the sense of serenity that Gollum has never known. Did I do a good job? Please tell me anyway I can improve my art! i won't be offended, I live to learn!

04-16-2002, 08:59 PM
Wonderful Shadowfax - I especially liked Merry and Pippin (smoking pipes), Eowyn and the Frodo, Sam and Smeagol ones - they have great character to them. I've been painting in oils for about five years, and if you want some advise from a fellow 'artiste' it would be - don't stop...!!!
elenya
04-16-2002, 11:38 PM
Your drawing are awsome(for lack of a better word)! Don't ask for advice about watercolor pencils from me. You did a good job but I think it's cheating. No offence. Go for the real thing! Go get some watercolos! It's fun...if not challenging...but it's easier that way to blend colors and spread them. I'll try to get one of mine on soon. Keep it coming!
P.S. You can draw guys with beards. And if you think it's that bad I'll put one of my guys with beard. That'll make you feel better. I have an inibility to draw anything but animals and scenery well. :o

yeah, I have been doing "real" watercolors for a while now, but I prefer acrylics. It's just that these pics were done on my cheap *ss sketch book, and (you are not going to believe this) but when I tried to paint another pic, THEY MELTED THE PAPER! grrrr... oh well. I used the pencils because I got them as a Christmas present, and I recently found them whil I was rumaging through my Trunk of Miscellaneous Art Stuff.;)

I was sooo close to getting a picture of mine up! It's not faaiiir!!! Then again all of mine are just landescapes so you're not missing too much. I'll get it up here soon. At least now I can use a scanner. :)

I'm gonna post something later tonight if I have the time. (I'm terrible...I started this guild and haven't posted anything.) I've just been really busy because I'm in my school musical. (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.) And it's been sucking my life out of me. :) Well I love you all!

Joseph and his Dreamcoat?? Whoa! My sister and my dad were in it when it was at our theater! My sis was coir and my dad was...the youngest brother. Can't remember his name. Good luck with the play!!! :D :D :D
And after my dance class and lunch it's straight to the library to scan in my pics!!

Hey guys! I don't have a clue why I've never posted in here before! I love art! Anyways, I'd love to join this little guild! All my art can be found over here! (http://www.eastofthewoods.com/smug)That reminds me... if any of you guys want a website of your own to display your art, lemme know, pm or email. I've got tons of room on my domain name to host your art.
Shadowfax-Yours are really nice! I like the colored pencil work, especially Eowyn facing the Witch King.
Elvish-Yours are good! I really love the one of Shadowfax

You've inspired me ladies, I'm going to start a little Middle-Earth series of my own - in pencil - I'm afraid that I'm only good at landscapes and Elf-maids - but I feel this guild needs a male representative... so look out for my first 'piece' next weekend...

Great to see more people have seen this! I reckon we got some pretty talented people on the forum...
I would be posting more stuff, but I fell off a horse reeeeaally hard yesterday and I got concussion quite bad (went to hospital last night and had IV medicine that made me feel terrible) but I'm fine now. Was jumping quite big on a horse I didn't really know, who did a huge standoff and I went flying, banged my head hard, and nearly broke my shoulder.... I am VEEEERY sore!:( shame poor me, stop moaning!
Anyway, will attach an ok pencil-watercolour of a balrog that I did ages ago...:)

But hey, PLEASE post your stuff! I'm the only one posting here and it's getting kinda one sided.:D :D :D

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! I think I'm going now!
I might post this dragon thing that I did for fun in Guache paints, but I did it for fun, and in about 20 minutes, but anyway.

The school has alot of mine too. I don't mind though. They always put the nice paintings and sketches in the window and mine's there so I'm happy! I haven't got much Tolkien art. It's all animals and nature except for the one at school. It's an actual person so I'm gonna get that scanned in when I get it back cause it's the first girls I've drawn that doesn't look like a total creep!

Shadowfax- really nice! I cannot do Anime, try as hard as I want to I can't. All I can do is my little sketches. And I try hard in art class but last time I only got 71%, I'll see what I get for the composition I just completed. But it's oil pastel and too big so I can't scan it, sorry!:D *relief*. But the colour is, as my art teacher puts it *interesting*. Well....
Anyway, if I do anything good any time soon you'll see it, but...:o

I wanna join the guild of Artists! And I'll post some art too! But I must warn you that I am not that good and I like to 'furry-ize' everything. So I'll post a small pic of Gollum 'furry-ized' into a lion. Rather interesting.
Talarion
06-30-2002, 06:04 PM
Here's another of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum (also furry-ized). I drew them as lions as I am part of a Lion King Art Archive and I like lions too :D
Tis a rather humourous picture in my opinion, not an actual scene from the book but cute anyways. Seems as though Sam is not at all enthused with Gollum's sneaking, nor his sign.

WOW! Obviously the email thing is not working for me, I was just coming in to get the thread maybe going again, but there is a ton of new posts. Update: My "Eowyn" Painting is going into the local fair in a few weeks, along with a ceramic griffon (crosses fingers that she can get it finished in time) and a petroglyph of a native american horse. If I can find a local industrial scanner I will scan that (It is huge) and the painting I am working on from the color sketch of M&P at the gates of Isengard. Oh, and I loved LotR in lions!

I have done a few drawings kind of like yours in the past with outfits i've designed, i'll have to post them sometime. anyways, not that you wanted to hear all that but that's what i thought of looking at your pics, which like i said, are pretty gosh darn good :) .

I can finally post some of my pics! I'll post a poem I wrote once as well...
At the dawn of darkness,
As I lay me down to sleep,
I wonder what the morrow
has for me to seek?
Answers to the questions
a mind wanders to speak,
while the hard hand of order
frowns down upon the weak.
Darkness of the night
embraces young dreamers,
dances with stars,
and hides misdemeaners.
Silence through the time,
sleep young future dreamers,
let your mind float to the stars,
rest young future leader.
Chasing shadows
from dawn 'till dusk.
You must do what
what you feel you must.
Though danger often holds
all your lust,
comfort uneasy hearts
and think about us.
I thought of the poem as a child growing up. In the first part the mother is pregnant and wondering what's going to happen, and the second kind of as a lulaby. The third is when the kid's grown up and gone out looking for trouble as all teens do. *lol*
The LOTR-like pic is attached to this message.

That caused to do some simple research (maybe If i read this entire thread I will learn more though)
The person who started this thread is gone!...No longer with the forum.
the proof (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?postid=122882#post122882)
Maybe she/he will be back???
Who is next in command?
I guess I'll read the entire thread....LATER though.
UPDATE!...Well I've gone through the thread. For those of you who are members, did you select a new leader outside of this thread?
For those who are not members, if you want to keep this thing going it might not be a bad idea to talk to one of the moderators. I imagine that they know who the new leader is if such a person even exists.:)

With this guild I don't think anyone really needs to be in command...it's just people posting their warious forms of artistic expression. I don't really think it's necessary to ask to join. But how does one change the guild descriptions? I would thin something along the lines of:
"The place to post your creative expressions, be they literary. poetic, or visual." But I kind of think "Guild of Artisians" says it all... any other views?
Well I am not an actual member, but I do agree with you. from I've read no one really does need to be in coomand. The guild may be removed if there is not is description submitted though. So for that reason, perhaps you gys should pick someone to be the official leader, to submit that description if nothing more. Or maybe you don't even need a Guild and can just have this converted into an Art thread under stuff and bother?

I would like to share a thought for those of you who are at school and are judging your artistic talents by the percentage mark some teacher gave you in an exam.
I went to my daughter's Illustration degree show at her University this year - it's a showcase of the work of the newly graduated students . It is attended by publishers and agents, so is very important to the students.
There were some students who were awarded 1st class honours because the Uni tutors liked their work, but there was one student whose work was in a style the tutor didn't like, and she got a 2:2.
At the end of the degree show, it was the 2:2 student, not the 1:1 who had publishers queueing up for her work, which was highly saleable.
You are not bad at art because of a low percentage point, and you may even be a better, more popular artist than the ones the teacher likes and gives high 90s to.
Shadowfax
09-03-2002, 06:53 PM
I totally agree. I recently had an experience like that at the county fair where I entered some art. I was frankly apalled and offended at the quality of the judging, and not just in my classes. In the ceramic division I entered a lovely Griffon, with large wings, jewelled eyes, and holding a marble in its claw. I spent quite a bit of time getting the patterns on its wings and head correct for a bird of prey. It got third to a large lumpy "dolphin" (that's what the card said it was) and an equally lumpy, small pinch pot. Niether of these was glazed correctly, and had garish colors, spread on so thin that you could see the clay beneath. Natually i was less than pleased.
But the real insult was that my Eowyn painting (which is up here) got 3rd to another dragon, that was...well, I can't really describe it, except they had painted it by outlining everything in black before, colors were outside of the lines, and the dragon was not well drawn, and the colors were inconsistent and blotchy. I have no idea what judging criteria were used (if any) but this is not the first time at this particular fair the judging has been a load of BS. So I have since resolved to not care about placings at art shows, as art is obviously not the easiest thing to judge. OK, rant off. I'm sorry for taking up space on the forum, but I had to vent...

I'm not a member of this particular guild, I really lack in the drawing department (I'm more of a ceramics & scuplture person myself...) but I am putting together a LotR scrapbook of drawings.
You people here are amazing artists, and I was wondering if I could draw permission out of you to print of these pictures and put them into my LotR Scrapbook. I would, of course, give you full credit on my Table of Contents page (pg.2) .
And I was also wondering, if it's not too much trouble, if anyone would be so kind as to draw a cover for me of the One Ring, or the Eye of Sauron, or something of the like...
(PM me if you're interested in doing this, I don't need it any time soon...)

Looks fine to me:)! You've kept the detail out of Frodo's face, which helps to convey the numbness of mind that sometimes replaces terror, and which would otherwise immobilise him.
I thought I had posted this before But I don't see it around so here it is.
Nothing special except that i drew the elf's face first in pen so no earsing on him.
It's Legolas based on PJ's movie, with an ent in the background. The full imagine has trees and other things but I have cropped it to show the elf's face.

It's beautiful - the perfect setting for this:
Silmarillion Chapter 3 It is told that even as Varda ended her labours, and they were long, when first Menelmacar strode up the sky and the blue fire of Helluin flickered in the mists above the borders of the world, in that hour the Children of the Earth awoke, the Firstborn of Iluvatar. By the starlit mere of Cuivienen, Water of Awakening, they rose from the sleep of Iluvatar; and while they dwelt yet silent by Cuivienen their eyes beheld first of all things the stars of heaven.
Eledhwen, thanks for the compliment.
I have a question for everyone now though. I just did a drawing of Finrod wrestling with the wolf. I made two different versions, in one he is standing up with the wolf sort of wrapped around him. In the other the wolf lay on it's back with Finrod on top of him. They're almost the exact same pictures, just that one was rotated 90 degrees and has some minor changes to it such as the direction of the flow of Finrod's hair.
I would to know which one you think looks best, standing? or Laying?...I will not post them here become it is graphic violence and I'm just iffy about it. If anyone would like to see this I can e-mail them or post them at my site. I just want to know which one looks better so I know how to do the background and where to stick Beren if I get around to drawing him.
thanks....

I noticed that, so far, all posts are on one thread. Maybe it would be easier to view the art if it were sorted into separate galleries (threads), eg: FotR scenes, TTT scenes, RotK scenes, The Hobbit, Silmarillion, Portraits, birds and beasts, etc.
To me this seems like a thread where art is posted, not a guild at all. I think it doesn't even have a leader. People are showing very little interest in this place as well. Heck, I would volunteer to be the leader except that I have NO art knowledge. I'd like to see this turn into an organized and active place....but if there aren't people willing to do it, what more can be said?

not really a scene in specific, but it looks sort of like the cover on my copy of the sil, the way you have the water and mist in there, its really cool, but I think my scene is supposed to be of the coming of the first born, or maybe the Teleri.

sorry for taking so long to answer.
I used Photoshop 7 and did it for a school assignment.
That pic of Frodo detracted from it though. So did the Aragorn one.
BTW, all of the pictures were from http://fan.theonering.net/art/wallpaper_full.html

Well I'm no artist but I do use Paintshop Pro so I know how the computer drawings go. I can tell you've put a lot of effort into this, and taken care to detail. Everything is done neatly and not sloppy at all. Because of this patience and care I think that you'll be able to do anything with Photoshop. I like the way that you have highlighted the hair, and the shading used for her face is great. One thing you might want to try is a pencil/computer generated hybrid..:D I've taken to this recently and love the results that I am getting. My avatar was made with this technique.

Lovely pic! Her expression is beautiful-it shows such calmness but power.
Ok, I know I shouldn’t be talking, as it's far better than I can do, but the folds on her clothing seem to be a wee bit off, maybe? The picture also seems to have a slightly 'flat' feel to it. Instead of just shading where there are known folds, or where you have to (eg. the nose, ears, collar bones, etc) maybe add some more shadow and highlights to rest of the picture as well. I'm just bringing this up because the hair is beautifully shaded and highlighted, but it seems slightly out of place comparing it to the rest of the picture..
I don’t mean anything by this comment, just want to help! Beautiful piccy!

I reeeaallly love the the blue highlights on his robe- they are perfect, just like soft light was hitting them from behimd. You made me look at him in a new way- I've always pictured Grima as old, squinty, and with a beard, but him pale and slight works wonderfully too. That's what I love about art, you can get inside someone's head and see what they picture things as! Great job!

Long time no post. Anywho, while I have the time I would like to post a few pics I drew. They're both sketchbook asignments for school, but I think they turned out alright.
The first one is a pic of Old Man Willow, we were supposed to draw a tree with many deliberate lines that make a face. I plan to draw a pic of some Ents for Extra Credit.
The second is Duo. Obviously the assignment was to draw our favorite cartoon character. :p

hey I have a question. Why is it that there is only artwork of the battle scenes between Morgoth and Fingolfin. Ive never seen a picture of when fingolfin is getting stepped and cuts away the foot. Or when the eagle come and rips morgoths face to bits. Could somone here try to draw that? Id really love to see it.

Anamatar- I would *love* to draw that-unfortunately I have not read the Sil yet. Yes! I know i deserve to be tarred and feathered for not reading it yet, but I tried and was overewhelmed. And I would love to draw gory scenes, but my mother has already threatened to make me see a shrink for liking LotR so much, I really don't think that would go over so well. (She or my step-dad would find them-they snoop in my room, which of course tempts me to get one of my horse-needles and leave it in there. but then I would most likely get sent off to a nunnery in Switzerland. I wish I was joking.)

Just a thought, but...
Some people "paint pictures with words" right? So if someone didn't want to have to go through the process of writing an entire story for maybe just one sight, or maybe one scene they want to show everyone else, could they maybe just describe one picture, or one scene they want to share?

I have not read the Sil yet. Yes! I know i deserve to be tarred and feathered for not reading it yet, but I tried and was overewhelmed. Shadowfax, you do not deserve anything of the sort! My suggestion is to treat the Sil as several books. Read one story at a time, then tackle the next when you feel up to it. Keep a bookmark in the index of names - there are so many of them, even Christopher Tolkien admitted that it can be confusing!
Drawing or painting scenes from the Sil is a challenge - so much action and such fantastic locations! Personally, I'm not into graphic illustrations of maimings, even of the bad guys, so please warn me before I click (put an under-12 sticker on the link or something).

originally posted by gandalfthegrey: but i do like art and i want to create some maps of middle earth on my computer or by hand with an old fashioned feather ink pen...To make a quill pen you need a swan's wing feather so it's strong enough. See this site for instructions. http://www.regia.org/quill2.htm
goofoofighter
11-21-2002, 05:19 PM
Seriously? You need a swan's wing feather?? I had found a nice-looking turkey feather and was going to make it into sort of a caligraphy pen. Cuz at one point my bro had a caligraphy pen, but he lost it. So I was going to make a new one if I could, just as an experiment... Do you think it might work?
Eledhwen
11-21-2002, 08:49 PM
Turkeys can't fly, so their wing feathers might not be up to the job, though I don't really know. You'll have to judge whether their feathers will do. Swans have really huge wings and tough flight feathers. If you know anywhere where they hang out, there are usually a few feathers lying about.
Shadowfax

Actually, wild turkeys can fly, just not very far. Usually up to a low branch to roost.

Eledhwen

We don't do thanksgiving; perhaps that's why there are no wild turkeys - Wild? I'd be livid! We have turkey at Christmas - it replaced the goose as traditional Christmas fayre at some stage in history. I understand (from the website I posted earlier) that goose feathers can be used for quill pens - one of the first five flight feathers.
If you want a WP font that looks like it's been written with a quill pen, go to www.quintessentialwebsites.com/lordoftherings/home/index.htm where they invite you to download flat brush font (it's the one used in the title). Select Scene-by-scene images of Book One for the download (if you don't get totally absorbed in the rest of the site!)

I like the second Finrod better.
The first one's hair is too yellow and the contrast is too much. It's harsh to look at.
The second one looks more natural, and the eyebrows match better. Plus the shirt and background colors are softer and more Elvish if you ask me.
But the eyes on both of them are great!
If you decide you like the first one better though I'd recommend lightening his eyebrows. ;)
Wow I actually got an opinion! :D
Thank you Wonko The Sane! You're something, you know it? ;)

Of course, our guild founder is no longer with us, but the basic rules and guidelines are as follows:
1. Constructive criticism only... if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. :)
2. Keep to forum rules on questionable subject matter. We need a kid-friendly Guild.
3. Art does not have to be Tolkien inspired. It soes not even have to be graphic art. Awhile back, the thread went through a poetry phase which was quite lovely.
I can't think of any more...can anyone else?

12-02-2002, 09:39 PM
Very very nice!
Constructive criticism if I may?
I always picture Shadowfax as more streamlined and slender, with a more flowing mane rather than a wild one.
But as that is all artistic interpretation it doesn't matter really. That's an AWESOME picture of a horse. I simply can't draw animals so that's quite impressive!
Shadowfax
12-03-2002, 02:41 AM
Yeah, I was having a discussion with a friend about Shadowfax/s anatomy. She said she has always thought of him as an Arabian, with a very refined head, etc. Now, i have nothing against Arabians, but they just weren't prevalent in England in Tolkien's day, so I figured since he wanted a truly English myth that for the good guys he'd stick to english and European horses, such as Warmbloods and Draught-crosses. This would mean a heavier and more powerful and bigger horse. Arabians just don't have the body mass to carry armor and a big guy, like an Eorlingas, or what ever they were. Since Shadowfax is also a wild stallion, I based his mane and feathers on the mustangs we have around here. I don't care how royal a horse is, if they don't let anyone brush their mane, it will get tangles. (I have experience in this area...way too much actually)
The people I would say would have had Arabs would be the southerlings. They are clearly based on the middle-eastern peoples who needed light horses for long distances over desert. Also, Shadowfax was supposed to be very tall and *solid* which is something one diesn't generally get with an Arab. (Not *all* Arabs, just generally, don't flame me, anyone!)
So that's MY reasoning behind my artistic interpretation...did it make any sense? Am I way off base? my fav. breed is a Quarter Horse, so I really don't have TOO much experience with Arabs, just the annecdotes of my friend who shows the A- Arab circuit.
Wonko The Sane
12-03-2002, 02:50 AM
Yeah, I totally see why you chose to draw him that way and it makes perfect sense.
I always thought of Shadowfax as less stocky and "solid" just becuase of the slender grace I think any horse like that should have...because Shadowfax was so fast...anyway yeah, I don't know much about horses.
But I totally love the drawing anyway.
Although in the movie Shadowfax will most certainly be more royal looking as it plays better on screen.
Shadowfax
12-03-2002, 02:57 AM
I am not sure, but I think the movie-horse will be played by an arabian or arabian-esque horse...just so he looks special next to the clunky regular horses...and they're making him WHITE!!!!!! HE"S SILVER!!!! ARRRRGHHH!!!!! Asfaloth was white!!! *pant pant* Okay, I'm in control now.. *pant pant*
Yes, book Shadowfax is a bit of a mix...he has thoroghbred speed (they can get up to 60-65 mph) and Arabian endurance...and can hold his own in battle so he must be solid...needless to say, I don't think a horse like that could really exist. But I was just thinking that it is possible Tolkien had ridden an arabian, thier gaits are much smoother than the average English breed of horse. And thoroughbreds are descended from arabians.
Wonko The Sane
12-03-2002, 03:07 AM

Well, I will be pleased at least if the horse is an Arabian as I personally believe Shadowfax just reprsents his Shadowfaxian qualities better that way!

I think that women are a lot easier to draw. Something about they don't look bad if they are drawn a little skinny or a little muscular. If you draw a man too skinny he looks feminine, and too muscular it looks stupid. That's why I went with a Dwarf this time and they are stocky to begin with!
