That's what I want, someone who has time and again taken such liberties with the story as it is writing dialog wholecloth to fill in the narative that makes up the Appendicies and Silmarillion...

Me too. I also believe that PJ should make 'The Hobbit' a movie.

the hobbit is a movie. Its kind of a cartoon.

I know, and it is a complete and utter waste of the eyesight. I think PJ would do a much better interpretation of 'The Hobbit'.

Definitely agree. The cartoon left out so much, and lacked the basic...lure/attraction (?)...that is characteristic of Tolkien. PJ could probably carry 'The Hobbit' off quite well, just based on his work with LotR at the present moment.

Trying to make a movie out of the appendices is quite a concept; I would think that whoever fills in the gaps would forever be plagued with the fact that Tolkien's work had been interrupted and revised. Or maybe I'm taking the whole thing too literally? A Silmarillion movie sounds very interesting, though. Would like to see Roverandom made into a children's movie, too. :p

There is only one word to describe 'The Hobbit' cartoon and that is ****.

The movie is just a waste of time.

*Twitches* Could you imagine what PJ would do to the poor Sil!? *Twitches again* No. It wasnt meant to be, to much would be lost in the attempt to make the movie more open to the general public, instead of just Tolkien fans. The entire book would be twisted and destroyed.

Now the Hobbit, I think PJ could pull that off better than the actual trilogy, because its much more straight forward and less open to interpretations than LotR was.

If PJ did 'The Hobbit' as a film, not only what I.am.Smeagol said about it being better than the LotR trilogy, it would pull in a lot more at the box office as children could go and see it as 'The Hobbit' is a children's movie.

Yep, we musnt forget the oh so important profits! I mean, who needs to stay true to the books as long as there is a high box office turn out! (Sorry for going off track, I just get rather irked about this.)

The reason people make movies I.am.Smeagol is to make money, end of story!

True, True. I always seem to forget that one wee little fact.
Still, has anyone hear some merritable rumours that New Line is actually considering making The Hobbit or The Sil?

Are they really? Or is that just a joke?

I meant it as a question.
Hmm, I think in some interview PJ said he'd think about the Hobbit. And at the Barnes and Noble intervew in NYC a person asked about the Sil and he just laughed. Thats what I remember, I have no idea if that true or not. Prolly not.

I think the Sil would be out of the question, it would be more of a movie series (like Star Trek) than just one movie.

The script writers will have a serious problem interpreting Sil, mainly because I doubt anyone perceives the "fill in the centuries" margin Tolkien left the same way another person may. (in other words, we all think differently).

If the movie is made, some fans will be baffled, others angered, and still others put off or offended. I don't think PJ will take on Sil, but as I said before, it will be very interesting if he does.

PJ really has an opportunity to take stories from the appendices and the Sil and make them into movies, a "Stories of Middle Earth" series. Espcially the appendices are just story plots, so he could fill in the gaps with his own fantasy. I think it would be cool. He could go on doing that for years. We'd still get more of ME.

Why?

Because New Line does not have rights for filming anything else than "The Lord of the Rings" and apparently also "The Hobbit".

There is not enough in the appendixes to argue that they could argue that they have the rights for Sil on that basis.

Why they do not have rights?

Because Silmarillion (and Unfinnished Tales etc..)was published after Tolkiens death by his son Christopher Tolkien. And he is unlikely to give up those rights.

PJ only took on the Lord of the Rings becuase he was looking for another project that excited him after King Kong was pulled by Universal. He isn't driven by the dollars or Tolkiens work but by projects that excite and stimulate him.

"...and Peter Jackson, the Wizard of Box Office Magic, announced along with New Line Cinema that he would be next shooting J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved children's book "The Hobbit". Not a sequel, the film actually takes place before his ground and recordbreaking "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and is slated to star Ian Holm as the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

Being filmed entirely in his home country of New Zealand, Jackson isn't commenting on the project other then to say that he is in talks with Jennifer Lopez to play Gloin, one of the several Dwarves in the movie. "We wanted to keep as close to the story as we could, but there just aren't any strong female characters in the book..."

PLEASE!!!
DO NOT EVEN SPEAK ABOUT THEM MAKING THE APENDIX INTO A MOVIE. IF PG ALTERED AS MUCH AS HE DID IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS, JUST THINK OF THE TERRORS HE WOULD DO TO THE APENDIX!!!

Yes, I ssuppose so. But PJ overall did a fine job IMO. He tried to stick to it as much as he could, but there was a little editing required and a little summarizing also.

To my mind the is only one film-maker that could even begin to do justice to the Silmarillion. That would be J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame. Any attempt at the Sil would need the same sort of dedication and overarching theme. In short, a five year run that is completely serialized. Then maybe, just maybe the Silmarillion could come to life.

And don't forget the hearing! Whosoever allowed Orson Bean to sing should be horse-whipped and then shot as a warning to future film-makers.

Have a day.

I agree with Minas. I think that PJ is one of the few filmakers that are in the buisness because they love movies, not for the money.*sigh* if there were only more people like that out there maybe the world wouldn't be a giant landfill by 2020.:(
