Greetings, Citizens!

This is a place where the good folk of the Kingdom of Gondor and the Empire of Arnor can get together and talk about the comings and goings of all the provinces. Talk about whatever you like, but please keep it IN-CHARACTER (it's much more fun that way :D )

Aredhel

She enters the marketplace, and seeing nobody around she sits down.

Beorn
04-16-2002, 10:46 PM
*Beorn doesn't want to be noticed he walks through the market place, so he calmly turns into a bear, and procedes to survey the area* :D

Elbereth
04-17-2002, 01:44 AM
Enters the marketplace and heads straight towards a stand that is selling antique wedding dresses.

(Good thing this marketplace opened up...I thought I'd be out of luck now that the stores around the Gap of Rohan have closed due to the developing war in that region.)

Tar-Ancalime
04-17-2002, 01:51 AM
A small chinese girl in a school uniform with braids in her hair explores the market, she stumbles apoun Elbereth going hysterical due the the store closings *tear* and says ,"Be not fretful! I like that dress! " She says pointing to a white dress(duh!) That had a train the size of a queen's with flowing sleves and the dress looked like gladdy's otherwise. Than the girl disapeers

Elbereth
04-17-2002, 02:13 AM
"Hmm..that is pretty. But do I want sleeves? Hmm...I think I need a sleeveless dress for a summer wedding."

Then rumages through some 1900's inspired dresses and discovers the most beautiful cap-sleeved gown in winter white organza and sparkling mithril lace.

"This would be perfect!" ...then searches for the booth attendant who is no where to be found.

Tar-Ancalime
04-17-2002, 02:16 AM
The girl reappears "Queen of Valinor, I like that dress better." she says, than decides to hang around Elbereth for awhile.

Elbereth
04-17-2002, 02:25 AM
"Me too little girl. I think I'll buy it...now where in Middle earth is the booth attendant? Do you know little girl?"

Ciryaher
04-17-2002, 04:02 AM
Ahh, 'tis excellent to see all of you good folk here! There are numerous confections and fruits and jewelry and cloth...everything you could wish to purchase (except weapons) can be gotten here! *tries some fruit from a stand*

Tar-Ancalime
04-17-2002, 04:49 AM
The little girl looks at Elbereth,"Who's that guy talking???Is he the famous kind ruler Ciryaher?" The girl asks curiously.

Elbereth
04-17-2002, 05:03 AM
"Cir, you wouldn't happen to know the owner of this booth would you. I would like to purchase this dress...but the merchant is nowhere to be found. What sort of business is this person running?"

Chippy enters the market and see all her friends wondering around the stalls...She notices Talierin walking past a kitchen ware stall..Chippy walks over to her, while walking over to Talierin, Chippy sees a bear raiding a Apple stall. When Chippy reaches Taleirin she asks "Is that Beorn over there? Anyway I am going to head over to the book stall, Do you want to come?"

Talierin
04-17-2002, 05:21 AM
*Aye, I would love to, if you'll come with me first for a minute. I want to buy a nice eastern outfit, in green, of course! I would like your opinion on them.*

OOC: I always knew Beorn was an Apple fan at heart........... ;) :D

04-17-2002, 05:27 AM
"Sure, Just keep in mind I am not very good fashion consultant"

Elbereth
04-17-2002, 05:33 AM
From behind a rack, Elbereth finds the merchant sleeping on a stool near the fitting rooms. Waking him, she pays for the dress.

Then walking by Chippy and Talerin, she overhears their conversation.

"If you need a fashion expert...I could help. I have a college degree in fashion buying and merchandising."

Talierin
04-17-2002, 05:38 AM
*They walk off to the appropiate stall, where Chippy helps Tal pick out a long green caftan with copper embroidery, and two long tunic/shirts, one green, one black, and a pair of loose black pants. Then they head for the book stall, where they load up on books of all kinds.*

Adrastea
04-17-2002, 05:49 AM
..While Tal and her walk over to the book stall she sees Beorn now raiding a honey and bread stall, Chippy points it out to Tal and saids "He really needs to learn some manners".

At the book store Chippy picks up a book called 'How to Solve Riddles', Chippy shows it to Tal "I really need this book I am still stuck up to the 3rd riddle of Anc's riddle game". Chippy puts into her basket with all her other books.

Shadowfax
04-17-2002, 05:58 AM
*Shadowfax, the wandering artist, strolls into the marketplace to see what interesting people there are to draw. Spotting Goldberry344 and recognizing her as a fellow equestrienne, Shadowfax saunters over to see if she wants to check out the horse breeders corral.*

Talierin
04-17-2002, 06:00 AM

*recovers from his choking fit*

Ah, my sweet! There you are! See how the people walk about buying goods of the highest quality? *gestures broadly* 'Tis good to hear the clink of coins rather than the addled arguments over nothing. Come, let us wander about the busy street!

*turns his attention to the sleepy merchant*

You! Stay awake and tend your stall or I will have the Minister of Commerce fine you! *shakes his finger*

*samples a hot pastry, and gives an approving nod. when he moves on, the pastry stall is flooded with customers*

Aredhel

Talierin
04-17-2002, 06:13 PM
Talierin decides she wants to wear her new outfit, so after buying her books, she walks off to the bathrooms*, to return 10 minutes later in her full middle-eastern splendor. She then goes to find the greatest stall ever, the Steak on a Stake place, for lunch.

Ciryaher
04-18-2002, 04:16 AM
*Ciryaher turns around and looks at the girl*

It can be quite demanding, little one, and there are always problems that must be dealt with. However, guiding a people upon the path of Good and Prosperity is quite rewarding to the mind, body, and coffer.

*hands some coins to a stall-worker and hands the girl a small, blue cloak imported from Dol Amroth*

You see that swan there, on the clasp? That is in exact proportion and design of the Swan-ship of the Prince Amroth himself! I was born there, you know *he smiled at her* Where are you from, little one?

Eomer Dinmention
04-18-2002, 01:11 PM

"Hmmmm...imitation Silmarils(lol)," she says as she buys three.

Ciryaher
04-18-2002, 05:13 PM
Greetings, King Eomer, Friend and Ruler in Rohan! *crosses his arms and bows*

I can give you the revenur figures...but in private. If some people knew how much money Arnor was pulling in, everyone would be out to get me. After all, how do you think I can afford all the new bridges, temples, markets, and armies that I have? *grins*

*raises his arms in an encompassing manner* I do so enjoy children but there are so few...so few in the land of Arnor. I was thinking about reduced taxation for families with children, but there could be problems with that; abuse, of course. *looks thoughtfully at Kem*

A small wagon train comes into town. twenty or thirty bustling women get out, and ten or so men help to unload and build a large stall. The last two wagons are emptied of their contents into the stalls and one of the men hands one of the women a bag of gold, for put-up in an inn. The next day, as Ciryaher and Eomer are buisy talking amongst themselves, an elven woodcraft stand opens. It sells everything from fine wood furnature to great Long Bows for experienced hunters.

A cloaked figure on a dapple grey stallion rides up to the market entrence. The figure wanders around the market, and soon finds a fine jewelry booth. "Hmmmm....Ciryaher could at least get better "Elven" jewelry than this." Leaves the booth and wanders over to a cloth booth as she likes to sew her own clothing.

Kit Baggins
04-18-2002, 10:41 PM

Ciryaher
04-18-2002, 11:00 PM
*overhears a complaint*

Let me assure that I do not say what shall and shall not be sold here, and if you find fault in the jewelsmithies of Imladris, I suggest you take it up with them. *nods stiffly*

Ahh...Minister! *a stout man looks up and makes his way before the Emperor, then bows* Be sure and check the sales permits of all foreign traders...make sure they know that the sale of all weapons is prohibited (except of course the bows of all sorts used by hunters). And make sure all of our denizens and guests are receiving the highest quality service!

Tar-Ancalime
04-18-2002, 11:13 PM
"I am from nowhere, eternally damned to wander the lands in search of a place that will accept me until that day I must always wander." The girl looks with admiration at the brave leader Ciryaher and disapeers as quickly as she came.

Ciryaher
04-18-2002, 11:32 PM
*Ciryaher smiles after the girl, and then hears a distinct clanking noise*

Hoy! You all there! Take those things and go! Did you not hear me but seconds ago? No weapons may be sold except for bows. Take your goods and please store them securely outside the city limits at the Eastern Guard tower until you depart Arnor. How did you get them in the City in the first place? Go peacefully and I will simply have the guards escort you rather than drag you out!

Tar-Ancalime
04-18-2002, 11:39 PM
The girl reappears,"Lord Ciryaher, thank you for the cloak. I give you a gift from my home." than she quickly leaves again. Cir looks at it, a Tommy gun.

Ciryaher
04-18-2002, 11:55 PM
*looks at the contraption and turns to Kem*

Hmm...what manner of device is this?

*grips in in his hands and squeezes a little hook while pointing at the sun, causing a series of loud explosions until the Emperor dropped the thing*

Great Eru! A strange gift indeed *picks up the device and looks around*

Tar-Ancalime
04-18-2002, 11:58 PM

Goldberry344
04-19-2002, 12:00 AM
*Goldberry finally looks up from her stick figure drawings to see Arathin at the cloth stall...she runs over to say hi, and trips over a furry thing that yelps at her. quite startled, Goldberry walks away, and then runs into arathin.* "er, sry about that...you know how clumsey i am!"

Kementari
04-19-2002, 12:22 AM

" You may come and dwell with us if you wish, little one. Our palace in Annuminas would be very merry with a child living there."

Tar-Ancalime
04-19-2002, 12:24 AM
"Thank you kind lady...maybe i can stop wandering the earth now err...well you know what i mean." she says and smiles.

Shadowfax

Ciryaher
04-19-2002, 04:20 AM
*claps his hands and squeezes Kem's hands excitedly*

Wonderful! A child in the palace! *bends his head slightly and looks at the girl* You said your name was...Ji Li? Strange name, but stupendous nonetheless! Come! Let us go to the palace and fix your room.

*took Kem's hand in his right, and Ji Li's in his left and they went to the great Palace of Annuminas as the sun hung low over the Emyn Uial*

"ahhahaa Kids these days, never know what they have in there own little pocket"

*Eomer remembers the directions, Cir gave him. He then runs to the Food Department

*He spots the Duck
"ahhhh Yes, Westlake Duck, also good for Peking Duck.
my good man how much do you want for all of these ducks?"

The salesmen is shocked
"amm sir, this is alot of money, you wan't all of them?"

"Of course i do, here that should be enough"
*Eomer hands the salesmen a bag of gold
"Wow yes my lord"
Eomer whistles. In two seconds, a large cart appears at the back.

" Gilian, Tradin hurry take all of this duck, then wait for me at the entrance, I think i might need to buy some beer."

Ciryaher
04-19-2002, 10:55 PM
After watching the Emperor and Emperess head to the Palace, Minister Marby of Commerce and Trade sauntered around the Market, checking permits here and there. The excitement grew too much for him, though.

"Ohh! Simply splektitacular! I wonder if other hobbits are here," he wondered to himself, "I hope some nice folk come up from Bree or the good old Shire!"

Kit Baggins
04-19-2002, 11:14 PM

Ciryaher
04-20-2002, 03:57 AM
Minister Marby whirls around. "A hobbit!" he squeaks excitedly, then proceeds to grab Kit's hand and shake his arm off. "Quite delicious seeing you here, Thain Baggins! How are you doing? Up here on business or pleasure? It's really quite lovely this time of year, don't you think? Are all things going smoothly in the Shire?"

Ciryaher
04-20-2002, 05:05 AM
There is a trumpet blast off in the direction of the gates, and after a minute or so, a chariot driven by a young woman with black hair (almost like cobalt) and grey eyes thundered through the market, barely missing the slower patrons.

The Minister clapped his hand to his forehead and then said loudly to Kit, "That would be the Emperor's niece, Eariel, from the shoreland castle of Dol Amroth. *lowered voice* I've heard that the Emperor had a brother. He died with his wife right after His Majesty's niece was born...very sad. *voice returns to normal* But, she's coming to live with her uncle for a while...'tis interesting that His Majesty took in that little girl as well."

He gets off. And sees Cir's neice

"wow, how come Cir never told anyone he had a niece"

*Eomer sits down and waits for Cir to come out

Tar-Ancalime

Elbereth

*Bumps into Eomer, who is sitting and waiting*

"Oh hello Eomer. I didn't think I would see you here. Was that Cir's niece who past by...hasn't she grown up...and is quite pretty at that, don't you think? And I hear a rumor that she is looking to find a king to wed." *gives Eomer a friendly wink* "If I were you...I would look into that."

04-20-2002, 06:18 AM

Elbereth
04-20-2002, 06:20 AM
"I think she is older than she appears...but only Cir knows for sure."

Ciryaher
04-20-2002, 06:40 AM
*time passes and Ciryaher returns with Kementari and Eariel*

"...And this is the Marketplace, which I heard you blew through like a torrent!" Ciryaher chastised his niece sternly.

"Yes, yes, yes," Eariel answered, "Markets are good and all, but when can I go hunting? Where are the armourer and the stables?"

"Patience! You will have the chance to do all of that, but you will not do anything until you have gotten your rest and tell me about your journey from the family castle in Dol Amroth. Oh! Minister Burrowes," the Emperor said, smiling, "If you would like to have the day off to spend with the hobbits that have come up from the south, you may do so."

"Truly, Sire?" asked Marby, "Wonderful! Simply delicious! I shall ask a storm of questions and expect nothing less than a tempest of answers!" The Minister rubbed his hands and laughed, then trotted to find some hobbit companions.

Ciryaher

Ciryaher turns to Eomer, "Yes, this is my niece Eariel from Dol Amroth. She's--"

Eariel pushes him over. "I can speak for myself Uncle!" she states decisively, "You are Eomer of Rohan, yes? I love hunting...it's the only thing I ever got to do when I lived in Dol Amroth (aside from boating, which is a skill I get from my father's side of the family). Fortunately for me, Arnor lets women serve in the Army and I can fight enemies instead of just hunting."

Ciryaher claps Eariel on the back of her head. "She is so much like her father," he said looking at his niece sidelong, "Alas that he did what he did. Anyways, I'm sure that she'll like it more here with us than around all of our recluse cousins in Dol Amroth."

*Eomer hands it to Hirana
"Here my lady, Is a necklace of friendship, was made by the our finest Smiths in Rohan. It might not be as pretty as the jewels in Arnor. But to us it means everything. I hope you will wear little one. For it will make Rohan and its people very happy"

*Eomer stands up
"Well I think i must go now. Farewell Lady Kem and Lord Ciryaher. It is time i must go"

*Eomer then rides back to his cart

A maiden enters the market, seeking Lord Ciryaher. She finds him and delivers her message:
"Lord Ciryaher, I bring congradulations from Lady Tarien of the Noldor. She says that she has not seen such a fine place of commerce in quite some time, and that it will help Arnor to prosper. And I think that if a Firstborn Elven Lady thinks that, you've done something." the human girl says.

"Indeed? I am flattered!" Tarien says. "Nimir, Lord Ciryaher is one of the greatest rulers I have been priviledged to meet. I would expect no less from him." She turns to Ciryaher and Kemetari.
"I thought I'd drop by." She peers around Ciryaher and notices Eariel. For an instant, their eyes meet, and Tarien is faintly reminded of something she can't place. Tarien nods her head in a bow, asking:
"Who are you who journeys so far from home? You seem alike to the Lord, but are not of this land; That I can tell."

Ciryaher

Ciryaher leans towards Tar, "I like children, but we're not going to have any. Adoption is much better.

"Ciryaher is my Uncle...I am his dead, younger brother's daughter," Eariel answers Tarien with a glance to the south, "I lived with my cousins in Dol Amroth for some time." She looked at herself, "I suppose I have the family resemblance, but my Uncle tells me that I look more like my mother than my father...I never knew my mother, so I'll have to take his word."

Badbereth the Seer enters the market and sets up his stall in a corner of the market place... a Palantir with 'Made in Dale' written on the bottom, a set of cheap tarot cards, and an assortment of shiny white knucklebone... all layed tastefully on a cloth of pink and white chintz...
The patrons of the Market hear him call out in a wheezey voice...
'Ladies and Gentl'men... come on, come on, roll up, roll up... cross me palm wiv' silver and I'll give yer a peek inta yer future... Birfs, Marriges and Defs, I can see 'em all... War, Famine and Flatulence... nuthin' escapes the eye of Badbereth the Wise...'

"I see pain in yer future..." Badbereth cackles. "Pain and sufferin', trust not in the men of the Norf, 'cause they'll cause yer no end o' strife... and beware the stones o' plums... plums are the mischief... the source of all yer woes..."
Thus spoke the Seer... then disappeared behind a wall to spark up his pipe...

Tarien, who had watched the enterchange with the seer amusedly, now narrowed her eyes calculatingly at where the seer was.
"Fool. He messes with a power he does not understand, and cannot control. As like Denethor played with the palantir, Badbereth will come to an evil end." She turns to Ciryaher. Ciryaher strides over to Tarien. "My apologies, Lady. I have been pressed of late. Perhaps you would like to see the palace? Come, my Emperess! Come, children! Eomer, you may come with us to the Palace of Arnor and see how we live in the North!"

The Emperor beckoned to all, and took a few steps towards the Citadel.

Arathin

Courtasely refuses Cir's offer. She is quite happy with the way she and her people life. She never really liked the palaces of men anyway. Elven palaces were much her prefered. She wanders around some more and finally stops at a chinesse food booth. She sits down and eats there.

Tarien
04-25-2002, 04:34 AM
Tarien turned and curtsied.
'Thank you, Lord Ciryaher. I have curiously desired to see the palaces of men, and how they live in the North.' She fell in line behind Ciryaher as he started off.

Ciryaher
04-25-2002, 04:49 AM
Ciryaher leads those who follow to a strangely shaped gate in a strangely shaped wall. The gate seemed to mimic a wall of water and rippled apart at a wave from the Emperor's hand. The walls had a smoothness that coiled up into towers with ellipsoid crenellations.

The palace itself was a white pyramid with most of the top flattened. There was a blue, metallic dome in the center and the windows were paneless.

Tarien

Ciryaher
04-26-2002, 04:52 AM
Ciryaher bows slightly to his companions. "Let us go inside. We will visit the gardens later," he said, and gently pushed an beautifully carved, wooden door open. The carving of a high-prowed ship cutting through smooth waters seemed alive; the waters parting, the sails billowing, the oars dipping in and out of the tranquil meer.

They followed him inside, and they seemed to be on the inside of some strange creature. The hall was like a long, oval tube; curved pillars like ribs bowed out from the floor towards the wall and met at the ceiling. Slits running parallel to the 'spine' of the hall allowed a soft sunlight to permeate the room. At the end, there was another carved door of the same onion-like shape.

This they passed through, and upon a round, dome-shaped chamber they came. The floor--several storeys below--was reached by stairwell that seemed a part of the wall itself. The whole structure, all of the guests now noticed, seemed to be a single object. No distinction between wall and ceiling and floor could be made, and the organic beauty of it all was unbroken.

"This is what I like to call the 'epicenter' of the entire Palace," the Emperor said quietly, "All five rays can be reached from here. Perhaps you would like refreshment? We can visit my underground gardens and see if there are ripe fruits to be gotten, if you like, or we can go to my...how do I say this? Ah! Museum, that's it. I have a large collection of things in the library ray."

Ciryaher
04-26-2002, 05:25 PM
The Emperor laughed. "The secrets of this palace's design will never be revealed, friend Eomer," said he, and grinned.

"I'll take a moment to explain the layout of the palace, which you shall soon see. The palace is mostly underground, and five rays (like a great star) sprout out from this room. The 1st ray points due north and contains the gardens, meditation room, and the Imperial Quarters. The second ray points west-by-northwest, and contains the dining hall, kitchen, and the guest quarters. The third ray points southwest and contains the war records, strategy room, and guard quarters. The fourth ray contains our extensive Imperial Library and the quarters of the Tome Acolytes. The 4th ray contains the museum and gallery, and the 5th contains extra quarters for guests and a second garrison of the Praetorian," he finished and looked around at the people. "Where would you like to go first? If you hunger, we can eat in the 2nd ray; or we could relax in the gardens in the 1st ray. Whatever you want to do, we can."

"Kem and I have so few guests, and it delights us immensely to finally let some 'foreigners,'" he said with a wink and a grin, "See our humble lodgings."

Lorien
04-26-2002, 06:09 PM
Lorien says, "I personally would very much like to visit the gardens. I love gardens. They make me forget my worries."

Ciryaher
04-27-2002, 12:35 AM
"Come then, friends," said the Emperor, and began going down the stairs which wound around and down the corcumference of the dome. The stairs were embedded into the wall and instead of a rail, there was a wide, stout stone wall of sorts. The wall was carved out and water ran along a channel; ferns, vines, and flowers grew along the edges.

The stairs came to an end, and the little stream in the handrail leapt over the bottom of the stairs and off into the first ray. Ciryaher led the group alongside this wall and through a doorway around 20 feet tall.

As they passed through, they beheld a vast chamber lit with golden light. Fountains and waterfalls were scattered about, and there were irregular clusters of trees, shrubs and all manner of flowers. the path narrowed and branched, and they could see it winding about small mounds and trees. Looking up, there were great ribs stretching over the cavernous ray.

"The chamber can be covered with giant wooden doors if the weather turns ill. There is a system of mirrors that illuminates all when they roof is shut. Let us take the path to the right; it winds more, but my favorite spot is that way. Hence we go," he said and began walking slowly down the path, taking deep breaths and holding his Lady's hand tightly.

"I can purchase, a dragon, a mithril covered cross bow...I'm not fool!"

Tarien says no word, and flowers open to greet her. She gently touches one with a long hand, feeling it's life and royalty. The air is free here, once again reminding her own kin's works. Had they built this place? It would seem so, unless men's hands are craftier than she knew. The Numenorians, however, had built nothing like this. This was fairer than she had seen............in a very long time.

Ciryaher
04-28-2002, 12:13 AM
Ciryaher never looked around, but began speaking, "Indeed, these are the works of my own hand. All that you see is come of my imagination, and I myself oversaw it's construction."

He turned around and walked slowly backwards, smiling at Tarien. "Nothing can hide under the might of the Sun," said he, and then turned around once more. They continued moving along the winding path until there was a circle of flagstones with two benches in a semi-circular placement.

They were surrounded by a hedge, and the path continued on, but the Emperor stepped over one of the benches and stuck his hand into the green shrubbery. There was a swish of leaves in the air, and an opening in the hedge, and a narrow path led out.

Taking this secret path, Ciryaher led them along a narrow ledge overlooking a small, rapid stream. They rounded a bend, and there was a waterfall about 10 meters high flowing over a shrub-laden cliff. The path dropped beside the creek into a shallow bowl. All about the bowl, there were flowering vines of a most exquisite aroma climbing the steep, stony walls. In the center of the bowl, three golden, 4-pointed stars were carved; and those were intersected by two silver-inlayed rings.

Back in the market proper, Minister Burrowes has been arguing with unruly shopkeepers. "You simply must lower these prices, good sirrahs."

"But we must make profits! The sales tax is too high!" they complained.

"There is no sales tax!" And so the arguments went on...

* * * * *

Ciryaher took a deep breath. The air seemed almost alive to all present, as if the lawns of Lothlorien or the gardens of Valinor had been caputered in essence.

The vines on the rocky walls were laden with fragrant flowers, and the emperor walked over and brushed his hand over them somberly. "This is the only place I can truly have peace...but if the forebodings of evil in my heart come true, it may be long ere I am at peace again," he said quietly, as if to himself.

Ciryaher turned to face the group and allowed them to behold his vision.

The engraved crest brightened and swallowed all light...Stars appeared in the air, and the wondrous sphere of Arda lay before all. The vision enlarged, and the lands of middle-earth could be seen in detail. A dark shadow hung over the east, and it spread slowly east and south as they watched. Then, suddenly, there was a bright flash that startled all, and a burning wall of fire began sweeping westward, consuming the land like dry hay in a blaze...

The vision disappeared, and the heliomancer lowered his hand. "That is what I fear," he uttered, and his voice told of fear and sadness.

"I cannot say. Perhaps it will never come, but it might," he said and then smiled. "Let us move on; the night draws near, anyways."

He led them out to the path and they continued on through the gardens. They left a sombre and quiet area and moved into a flowered, lawn-like area filled with the song of birds and chattering of small animals.

"This is a truly beautiful place," she says,"It reminds me of Valinor."

Lorien has a sad expression on his face and at Aredhel's statement he nods slowly, "This place reminds me of my childhood in Valinor."

"Before...he and the spider came," she barely whispers. She brushes back a tear, and turned back to Ciryaher.

"Yes, before," Lorien whispers. Then he turns away and admires the beautiful flowers with a forlorn smile. Then suddenly he exclaims, "This place delights me to no extent Ciryaher. I think this is the best part of my visit here so far."

"I wish I could stay here forever," she sighs,"I don't think Cir will let me,since I am governing Rivendell."

"You find our house fairer than Imladris? That pleases me greatly," Ciryaher smiled at Kementari and paused in thought, "You may remain here, in this house, if you so desire. The Capitol is here in Annuminas anyways, and as long as you make occasional visits to your land and perhaps appoint a lieutenant governor to watch it at all times there...I see no reason why this is wrong.

But lo! It is now evening, and I will not have my guests go hungry," he cried and sent a flash of soft light rolling down the vast chamber towards the distant entrance. "The people of the House will bring food for dinner, and drink we shall from the springs here. Let us dine upon the lawn in the golden light of the sunset, and then we may sleep in the eaves of the Little Wood until tomorrow!"

"Thank you for the offer. I think I will take a little vacation,"she says,"But I do not know anyone who will act as governor in my stead."

She pauses to smell the flowers.

"If you cannot find anyone, I will send my niece to do the job for you. She is young, but I do not think the task will be overly difficult for her experience."

Trade had been quiet for many weeks in the market place. The emporer's dark words about impending war had put fear into the people and they hoarded what monies they had, for fear of having nothing in dark times, should they come.

But from the east came dark figures, tall men with weather-beaten faces, rough clothes and a dangerous look in their eyes. Great wagons they drew behind their horses, and the people wondered.

But they came to the great Marketplace, and began setting up stall. They unfurled a banner declaring 'The Produce of the Grey Mountains'. For they were traders commissioned to sell on behalf of the Grey Mountains (as orcs make pretty dismal salesmen!;))

And they sold:
- fabulous gems and jewels (that jools to you hobbits!)
- furs of many rare and beautiful beasts
- cured hides and leather
- precious and non-precious metals
- oil

They unloaded barrels of meats. One man started to break open a barrel, then paused hearing a scratching noise. 'What's that!' he shouted, alarmed. 'Step back.' said the chief. He produced a wood-hatchet, and broke it open. Large rodents leapt out and scattered in all directions. 'Ugh! Rats! How did they get in? They've eaten the meat! Goddam orcs. Can't trust them to pack things up properly!'

Putting this set back behind them, the traders begin to sell, cheerfully handing small pots of ale to those who stop and look.

Ciryaher took his time as he walked again throughout his gardens.

It seemed like so long ago when he had seen that vision of burning lands...now it was seeming to come true. He sat alone in his secret niche, and stared at the crest engraved on the stone of the floor.

Memories overtook him like a tide of sorrow, and his youth--so long ago--returned to him. His father...his mother....his brother...his niece.....and now he knew that there was another. One he had known long ago...
