hi was anyone else unhappy w/ how legolas was portrayed in the movie??? in the movie he was really cool by how he acted but some of the things he said just didn't seem like his character. i dunno if it was the way they were phrased or the way they were said. i am not knocking him is any way because he is my fave character but i was just wondering if anyone else noticed if it was different then the book. thanks!!

It's been a while since I saw the movie, but I seem to remember him being a bit too DnD-like and rigid. Not as free and 'Elvish' as Legolas in the books.

i agree w/ you Pontifex. i play D&D every monday and that is how i feel about his character as well. i am not knocking it in any way. orlando bloom played legolas very well he just isn't how i imagined him. the rest of the movie is great tho. i can't wait for the next one to come out. i hope his character gets better. thanks for responding!!!!

I am an archer, so I am somewhat biased, but here goes:

Archers always get the silly, background parts! And it said he had a knife, why not another? Makes sense to me. And is a bow truely a melee weapon? No! Peter Jackson the Great finally fulfilled the dreams of A&A Archery.

Archers rule! But not more than oboists, or tenor saxes!

Hi Tarien! Nice to meet a fellow archer! I thought too that it was a bit ridiculous to have Legoals use arrows to stab orcs at one foot distance, since in the book he has a knife (or two? I'm not sure) that he can handle very well.
I found that the lines he had to say were sometimes lines that in the book were said by Aragorn. This made him look a bit worried about everything, instead of 'free', as Pontofex says.

I don't see that Legolas was so different in the movie than he was in the book, but I think that all the charachters were a bit different than they are in books. Anyway that doesn't bother me because the difference is so little. The movie worked great!

In an interview OB said he had to learn to use the knives also. So he'll most likely be using them in the following movies.
Personally I prefer the bow and arrow.

The Bow was cool but useing them to stab orcs? come on.But if you didnt have enough time to grab your knife......
ps I thought he had sword(or it could be my screwd up mind....)

Welcome, kalwa_Avar! :)
I can't believe there are so many archers here! Including myself I know of three, all in this thread! Excellent.
I started last summer, and I often practice in my (enormous) back yard. I can't remember all the technical terms in English, but I believe I have a 28-pound bow. (For those who don't know, the pounds don't mean it weighs that much, it's the force needed to pull back the taut string. 28 isn't very much, but I'm hoping to get it 'upgraded' soon.)
:)

Oh yes, and Legolas did have a long, white knife. He used it to waste Orcs when he ran out of arrows at Helm's Deep.

i think they did a pretty good job on legolas but he was defnitely more serious than he was in the book...i only wish elves played more of a part in the lord of the rings. it seems they are taken as ancient creatures and mainly used on the story for telling of his history with not enough elves fighting. this is a little off topic but speaking of legolas' knife which he actually does have and it is retarded that he didnt use it but i found a web site with swords from the lord of the rings! they are releasing 3 new ones with each movie so be on the lookout for legolas' knife the site is: www.armsofvalor.com

well im out

hmm... i think ob did well with what he had; it wasn't much. his character wasn't so well developed, but then, it wasn't so much in the books either, was it? what's annoying is that he is getting all the attention for being so hot (don't get me wrong, i'm a fan- have u seen that gap commercial?) and he doesn't do anything in the movie. i didn't notice the too-cool thing actually, but i dunno, maybe it was...

Pontifex, with a name like Feanor chica she had better be a girl.
I really liked Orlando Bloom's portrayal of Legolas, but he wasn't "elvish enough" If anyone gets what I mean.

I Liked Orlando's portrail as Legolas. In my oppinion everyone in the movie did a good job portraying there characters!!! It was like I was watching the book! Thats how much I loved the movie.

Hey I didnt really like how some of the characters were portrayed, no one can really fit the discription of another person perfectly and when you use your imagenation (sp?) they become real people with diffrant personality traits, but yes some were pretty close to peoples imagend people,

My opinion, The lipstick wearing barbie elf was not all that great, ya Bloom did a good job portraying the small part that he was given, but in the movie he seemed more shallow, and not completely 'elf-like' if you catch what I mean. The same with Aragorn. I know this is a thread 'bout the lipstick wearing barbie elf but I had to add that. He did a good job at the archery bit but...all together, the book Legolas beat the movie legolas a hundred times over.
^_^ Thats just my opinion
Orli used to smoke ^_^ I found that out...ooooookay...umm....ya

I found that Legolas was excellently potrayed in the movie. He is handsome, fair, swift, smooth, keen, and light of foot. His speech is gentle and strong and he moves lightly. Didn't you notice that when he came to Rivendell on horseback he dismounted swiftly and yet he did not bounce or bend when he hit the ground. I have watched lots of people ride horses and most can't dismount that smoothly. Also, Legolas walked on top of the snow on the Red Horn Mountain just like in the book. He was awesome with bow and arrow especially when he sees an orc right in front of him and taking and arrow he was about to fire stabs the creature and then shoots the arrow and slays another orc. That is so cool and quick thinking! I don't know about the rest of you, but I think he was perfect!

~Ariana

P.S. He was far from girlie. Elves are supposed to have long hair. He is NOT a lipstick wearing Barbie! What a pathetic description!

But guys.........
When you read the entire book, the you really "get into a character". At least that was with me. I was thrilled with Aragorn after reading the 5th book (1st part of ROTK)! So, maybe Legolas, as all other characters will be complete through other two parts of the film! And as for Legolas singing, I think Tolkien notes that in TTT and ROTk! I'm not sure...

i can agree completely and as an archer i think that he was very perfect witht he bow as well... and yes he was very lightfooted and he spoke really softly adn i think that he was very handsome and keena dn smooth adn his voice was soooo soothing to hear like elf voices are surppose to be!!! hes not girly all elves are like that!!!

To my mind he plays the perfect elf, as has been noticed he has a soft voice, fair of face, easy graceful movements and good with his weapons.
The only difference I can see between the 2 is that book L sings and film L doesn't. Oh yea isn't it a sword and not knives? What do you think of the other elves? I think the other main ones are just as good but some of the background ones aren't, they either look to stuffy or too childish!:D

I think that Legolas was portrayed pretty well in the movie. I mean, he seemed very elf-like to me and he seemed good with the bow. I don't think anyone can really decide how good his acting was, considering that he didn't have very many lines and that at least three of them were only one word. I think that in the other movies, his character will be developed, just as someone else on this thread said.

Earendil

Yes he will be cause book three hes in alot of scenes...but i think because he didn't have that many lines he should be judged upon his movements and he gets an A+ in my opinion!!:D

Yah i am a singer and I really want to hear Legolases voice, i mean Orlando has a really good singy almost voice )(talking) Anyway with his British heritage he should have alol the right vowels

Melian Le Fay

Maybe I don't remember all too well, but I think Leggy does most of his singing in TTT and ROTK...I can't remember him singing in the first book... I doubt they'll make the scenes with Orlando singing, I guess there just isn't enough time!!! (Though I wouldn't mind waching a 5-hour long film!!!!! :D :D :D )
And as for the knives-sword question, Legolas has ONE knife in the book, and uses it in Helm's deep, when he runs out of arrows. Though, I don't mind two knives (they're something like long knives, not some potato-peling thingies...) He just looked awesome waving around with them in TTT trailer!
And as for OB's British heritage...I'm not sure what you ment exactly, Ms Greenleaf, about the vowels...? Anyway, I heard OB talk, and that ain't no sweet British talk!!! He doesn't speak like in the film, with a fine pronaunciation, but something like....hmmm...I don't know, just the way Brits speak now...It'r reminds a bit of Australian talk...Do you understand ? I'm not sure I explained it well...

I don't think Gloucester, Surrey, and Essex have accents of their own, but yes, I guess we have almost as many regional variations as there are in the USA!:-)
And, how DO you pronounce "mirror"?!

Galadhwen
09-08-2002, 06:10 PM
Well I think they are accents on their own... Mirror um I suppose I pronounce it "Mirra" perhaps with a slightly silent r on the end as well.
Just thinking bout how Legolas has few lines in the film in places his expression makes up for the lack of voice, when Gandalf is explaining bout the Balrog you see Legolas's face and by that you can kinda see that he knows what they're up against.
By the way Joxy what part of the UK are you from?

I thought Legolas was Okay. I didn't really care about him in the book as I am more of a hobbit person than an elfy person.

But i really thought it was cool when Legolas was walking on the snow, in mount cahadras, when all the others were sinking into it knee-deep! I thought that was really clever.

I'm from the south side of our humble little earth. :)

I remembered that scene like this : Everyone sank in the snow, then Legolas pulled himself out of it and started walking on top of it, while others were still trying to get out!
I know Elves are light footed, but walking on snow, while all others were sinking is a little bit against the laws of physics! I think that snow was "stuffed" after it fell, so Legolas was able to walk - as would any other be able...

And as for the way the UK-ans speak, I was trying to explain that Legolas/OB speaks a fine English, somethink like UK royalty speaks - get it? A very sofisticated pronounciation, while OB speaks a bit more commonly... his speech doesn't sound all that sophisticated! (Call me a snob, I can't help it...)
Mirra - well, I guess both Americans and UK-ans pronounce it that way...

P.S. that UK-ans was ment to be a joke, but it's not funny...:(
I ment no insult!

Okay, I was an archer for many years and I've been playing D&D longer than most of you have been alive, I imagine, and I loved the way Legolas was portrayed in the movie. What I didn't like, is that he seemed to get dialogue that was always stating the obvious, "Orcs,' being one of them. I think a lot of his dialogue in Lorien was cut, and I hope to hear it in the Extended DVD.

The costumers did a neat thing, too. Tolkien says Elves usually wear silver and gold, yet he said Legolas was in greens and browns. The costume designers took both statments and blended them, so that Legolas wears a silver tunic under his jerkin. Cool.

And I loved the costumes of the Lorien Elves. I bought the castings to use with some of my higher level Elven Healer and Fighter characters. I guess I could use them for mages, too, since they don't wear armor.

And I loved the Elven armor. The Elrond casting has it. I hear that they're going to be selling the sword replicas - including Elrond/Arwen's sword and the long swords used by the Elves of the Last Alliance.

Save your pennies, gamers.

well if your talking about not in the movie as in how there did it it was of course compressed so that Legolas was able to walk upon it but if your talking in the movie then i have to say that there are no physics when it comes to tolkien elves are light footed and i think it was a great representation of that fact!:) adn also yes i'm very happy with the movie Legolas because thats how i alwyas imagined Legolas...handsome, light footed, soft voice and Deep intense eyes...so yeah i am happy:D :D

Tolkien's Elves could walk on snow because they were not fully of the physical Middle-Earth realm. They were actually light (as in sun ray light) beings who came to Middle Earth after the Silmarils were stollen.

In the book, when Fordo is on the Rivendell side of the ford and the Nazgul are threatening him from across the waters, Glorfindel is there fighting them and Frodo sees him as pure light. Later Gandalf explains that to him when he awakens in Rivendell.

I think they lit Arwen's arrival scene that way to get that 'light being' aspect across.

Well my comment on elven light-footness was about the way it was represented in the film - a little bit litterally, I'd say. I don't think the term "Light-footed" means litterally that, but it describes ones ability to walk fastly, lightly, softly, not to make any sounds...
But I definitely agree withj your comment!!!!!:p :D

But maybe I'm wrong, I've read the books some time ago, and that was before I read the Sil, so I suppose I didn't fully understand Tolkien's concept of his world...
I also think that PJ took Arwen's radiance quite literally, he thought - Gorfindel was as light, let's put Arwen in the film and make her just like him. Though, when I watched the film, I thought of it as some sort of Frodo's impression - she was an Elven princess, beautifull, and all Elves have some sort of radiance...And Frodo was almost passed out...

kazren

Trivia is basically useless little facts, like how many dimples are on a golf ball or how many movies did Spencer Tracy make with Kathryn Hepburn. They don't help you survive or grow better crops, they're just pieces of information we pick up in life that are mildly interesting.

So here are some trivia questions. Don't look at the answers below until you've given them a go.

1: Whom did Gimli ride with between Fangorn and Edoras?

2: Whom did Gimli ride with between Edoras and Helm's Deep?

3: Whom did Gimli ride with between Helm's Deep and Isengard?

4: Whom did Gimli ride with on the Paths of the Dead?
