View Full Version : RP Battle Test 1: Battle of Pelennor Fields
Snaga

This thread is here to battle test the proposed forum battle rules, in a proper RP-style battle. Rather than try them out on everyones normal characters/armies/kingdoms I thought it was better to try it on a scenario we all know and love... The Battle of Pelennor Fields. If you haven't seen the rules, you can find them on the Prancing Pony forum. But I will probably make adjustments before we start.
So please let me know if you want to participate... either reply or PM. I'll list below the main characters, and if they have a * next to them then they have an army to command. ** means they are essential IMO. Let me know who you want to be. Don't feel constrained to do exactly as your character does in the book... but be true to the character e.g. if Theoden decides not to help Gondor that would be kinda bad!
If the rules work then the fights will work out, but the main emphasis will be on the descriptions of the battle, character interaction etc. ie this may be a battle but its still an RP! Quality posts please!!!
I will be more tolerant than normal of ooc since this is a test... but try to keep them relevant and not just joking around!
Here are the characters.... I guess there are more if you want!

(YAY, I am Aragorn!!!!!...shall I start? Ok, I guess I will)
This begins as as the last of the fellowship prepares to enter the Paths of the Dead, Halbarad and his kin have arrived. Aragorn and company sit near to the entrance, and there only one thought circulates through his head.
Over the land there lies a long shadow,
westward reaching wings of darkness.
The tower trembles; to the tombs of kings
doom approaches. The dead awaken;
for the hour is come for the oathbreakers:
at teh Stone of Erech they shall stand again
and hear there a horn in the hills ringing.
Whose shall the horn be? Who shall call them
from the grey twilight, the forgotten people?
The heir of him to whom they oath they swore.
From the north shall he come, need shall drive him:
he shall pass the Door to the Paths of the Dead.

Just in case anyone thought things weren't moving... as you can see the cast list is filling up, but we do still have vacancies.
Unless someone else volunteers I expect that I will play the Lord of the Nazgul, and if I have no one else to be on the side of evil, I will control all the armies of Sauron. Muhahahaha... erm 'xcuse me... just got carried away there for a mo.
We could do with a Faramir / some other capt. of Gondor. But if we don't get one I will nominate Valar to direct the forces of Minas Tirith. In this case I'll do the retreat of Faramir from Ithilien, as an illustrative battle. Not as good as having someone else lead those forces, but it will serve I guess. Perhaps others will join as we get going.
I've got most of the troop numbers worked out. At this stage Spencer/Mormegil, the Muster of Rohan is only starting... Elfhelm tells you that your full strength will be six thousands (heavy cavalry). Elessar: Aragorn leads 30 Dunedain light cavalry, Tarien accompanies you as Legolas, and you have a certain grumpy dwarf too! The rest I'll post as needed... e.g. Valar you will find out the strength of Minas Tirith when you (and Kit aka Pippin) arrive.
The one thing that remains is some modifications of the rules that are needed. I hope to do those tomorrow. Then we can get going!:)
I can't believe noone wants to be Eowyn! What's wrong with this forum!?

What is the strength of heroes? Such as the Nazgul, Aragorn etc. And how strong will the hobbits be in battle? Sauron had more forces than Gondor, and they were only defeated by the arrival of Aragorn in the end. And even with that, the Witch King was defeated by a hobbits lucky stab.

You can... I seem to have accomodated all requests so far. We have a great cast list!
We are running short of places... but if anyone wants to play someone not listed, just PM me. e.g. Elladan, Elrohir, Halbarad, Elfhelm, Forlong the Fat, Beregond of the Guard, Bergil, Ioreth...
But Sting will no doubt appreciate some support with leading the bad guys!

Yes, Sting would like some help. We could use another Nazgul, or someone to lead the Orcs, and men serving Mordor. (Is this going to have the same ending as the books?) Mordor had an obvious advantage.

I will play the King of the Haradrim. I will command the Harad cavalry, the Mumak legions, and the Corsairs. Obviously, you can give me directions Sting.
I'm still working on the rules. Its taking longer than expected. I hadn't thought about Oliphaunts before!
The answer to the question 'does it end the same' is 'maybe'! That partly depends on whether the battle rules work, partly (hopefully mostly) on decisions made by participants. For example, Elessar appears to have decided that as per the book he will take the Paths of the Dead. Good move I'd say, but he could have chosen otherwise!
Obviously we all have some insight into what could happen, but as far as possible if we can all stay honest that would be good. So for example if Sting decides to stop his army outside Minas Morgul and do a thorough search for hobbits I will get the post deleted! I'm sure that won't happen!

There are characters' vital for this RPG who are not on the list, Denethor is one, Beregond is another, Bergil, Frodo and Sam, and the Eagles. Meneldor, Landroval, and Gwaihir.

(Psssst Nain Narya isn't a guy!!;))
Narya you are right there are other characters, although:
(1) Frodo and Sam are actually not part of the battle and so not available
(2) The Eagles don't appear at the battle.
(3) Someone COULD play Denethor, but he tops himself and I sort of assumed noone would want to play him. Could be wrong?!
(4) Bergil and Beregond are available... or anyone else you can find in the book. Or even miscellaneous soldiers not named.
Tarien, you don't have to restrict yourself to what happens in the book. You can get Legolas to do or say anything you like (anything which is in character I guess). Just be aware of the consequences of your actions. You wouldn't want to make Aragorn late for the battle:D

Right I've got the new version of the rules, which allow for Rohirrim cavalry, Dunedain, Numenorean infantry, Oliphaunts, Half Trolls, Orcish daylight deficiencies.... Let's see if it works!
At any time please provide comments on these rules: but I won't change them until the end of this RP. Better to stay consistent IMO.
I will provide narration where I think its needed, but I will rely on you all to describe your own moves well. In battles it is particularly important that you don't presuppose anyone else's moves, although this doesn't extend to things like:
- dialogue between friendly characters
- travel between locations where there is no reason to expect deviation
The other thing is not to move the story on too far at any time, in a way that might assume INACTION from everyone else. I will keep track of the time-line, by posting in dates appropriately.
Common sense will be applied when needed!:D
OK next I will post up everyone's starting position, and forces at their disposal, followed by an introductory narration, and we'll get going! :)

March 7
All across Middle Earth, forces slowly moved, in a great game of chess long planned, long forseen.
Proudly, the flag of the stewards fluttered above the White Tower. Upon this city the dark will of Sauron bore down, on this city the hopes of thousands were pinned.
Gandalf galloped like a storm upon Shadowfax, carrying Pippin there with him. All the time his hopes rested with the Ringbearer and his companion... where were they? But they were beyond his help. Yet Sauron must not know his true peril. Even now the fate of Middle Earth could rest on the brave soldiers of Gondor and Rohan: could they resist and keep his Eye drawn outwards away from his own land? There was no time to lose...
With the same thought Aragorn had resolved to take the paths of the dead, and went now to Harrowdale to seek them. And the gathering of the forces of the Rohirrim was beginning.
But the dark lord also was gathering his forces. But he was troubled, for his dark plans had been disturbed. He saw a proud face and Elendil's sword. Had a new ringbearer arisen? He would crush him, before he could wield its power. His strength had not reached its height, but it was nearly strong enough. He bent his mind on Mt. Doom to summon a final darkness. And he moved his forces into position.
Up the Great Road, through Ithilien came a Haradrim regiment to join the force preparing at the Black Gate. 1,000 strong it marched on foot, with its champion perched high on a mighty Oliphaunt. Their red and gold shone in the sunlight. They had no fear, for surely these lands were the Dark Lords already?

(OOC: It has been a very long time since I read LoTR, so correct me if need be!)
Aragorn walks steadily tward the dark door that he knows lies ahead. He steals a quick glance behind him, Legolas and Gimli are there, marching as is he. He is glad that they are with him, and is also glad for his cousin, Halbarad. As he looked, he wondered what was in the heart of the lady Eowyn, she seemed so determined to see what was lying in wait in Gondor, and he fully expected her to find a way to get there. Finnaly they arrived at the Dimholt, and they involuntarily took pause in their march.

Eowen is saddened by Aragorn's decision to travel the paths of death, for it is an evil journey. However, she is even more upset that she could not join him. She is torn by her responsibility to her people because her desire to venture forth and fight burns hotly within her.
Watching Aragorn and his men venture towards the paths of the Dead, Eowen swears that she will not be left behind again.
She then returns to the castle to begin her secret preparations for battle.

The Banners of the Prince blew gently in the sea-breeze, the Ship and the Silver Swan, proud emblem of the house of of Dol Amroth. Imrahil stood hard by - his eyes grey as the sea that beat about the base of his castle, his thoughts as deep and as unfathomable. His kinsman Denethor had given the call to arms to all the sons of Gondor and the Knights of Dol Amroth would not be found wanting...
Behind him twelve hundred men, arms glittering in the fading light, before him, the dark might of Mordor and bloody battle. Imrahil raised his sword and cried...
'Onward, Men of Dol Amroth, let us show the craven hosts of the Dark Lord that the Blood of Westernesse still beats in the hearts of the Freemen of Gondor... To Minas Tirith... Let duty be our battle cry, and hope sustain us when the road is dark...'
With this Imrahil raised his voice in song and spured his horse forward... with a roar the Knights of Dol Amroth caught the note and followed the Prince onwards....

High in the Tower of Guard, Denethor gazed into the Palantir. He endured the mockery of the Dark Lord grimly, saying nothing, and he saw to the south a new threat: the fleet of Umbar. And he felt the stabbing of the dark lords laughter. 'You will be crushed! And I will make you watch as my armies torment and slay the womenfolk and children of Gondor! Yes and your own son... I will make you watch his death, and you will be powerless to stop it!' But Denethor steeled himself, and did not show the despair he felt, as he saw the armies endlessly marching. At last he found the strength to tear himself away.
And he called to him his captains. 'How goes the re-building of the Walls of Pelennor? Is it done yet?' he demanded sternly. Then standing, he spoke: 'The enemy is coming! The doom of Minas Tirith is at hand. There are but a few days to gather all our strength. Sent to Rohan the Red Arrow! Light the beacons. Let all men come, that have the strength to wield a weapon.'
But inside, all hope had left him. His captains marked how old he now looked, and could not miss the empty look in his eye. But they feared and loved him, and they rushed to do his bidding.
And fire leapt from mountain top to mountain top, as the beacons were lit calling the men of Gondor and Rohan to war. And Gandalf and Pippin saw them as Shadowfax bore them through Anorien.
Still another day and a night before we reach Minas Tirith, thought Gandalf. Much may happen in that time!
March 8
The day dawns fair over Ithilien, and the Harad regiment begins to it march, knowing that it will leave this land and all threat behind. It was said that sometimes the men of Gondor would in their arrogance assail the servants of the Great One of the East, mused their captain. Pah! But they had not! They are weak! It would be a pleasure to crush them. He dreamed of entering their great city on his Oliphaunt, crushing the skulls of the defeated.
But that was yet to come.

The night comes for the companions around the black entrance, and a black night it is. It seems that a great darkness in the east has driven away the light of the moon, and now, indeed, the only light is that of one star, the stone of Aragorn's forefather still burned bright. He took comfort in that fact, realizing also, that if they were victorious (by a slim chance indeed) he would more than likely end up in Kingship. He wondered vaugly if anyone in Gondor still remembered when he had surved them, under that false name. Great deeds and happy days he remembered. He sighed. He needed sleep more than anything. It would be darker than night in the paths of the dead, and sleep would not be an option then. With that he drifted into a fretful slumber...

Fear seemed to grow on the company as they issued forth into the belly of the White Mountains. Voices around them whispered in tounges none of them knew, and the fear steadily grew. The road had been wide for an endless time, and by the feel of things more than the look, the path now widened, to an endless corridor that felt to strech on in either direction. Then a gloom came from the left, and Aragorn moved to see what the forein object could be, but indeed, he already knew.

Aragorn came to the body, despite the curses from Gimli. It must had been the lost prince of Rohan from long ago, for he was adorned in the most precious of matterials. There was a door behind him, probably filled with treasure. Aragorn turned, and to the spirits he spoke. He told them that there was no need of them to worry of their passing, that they wanted nothing they had horded up in the dark years, only to speak to them. And he first summoned them to Erech. And at last, after near to a day of riding, they came to a great archway, and took a steep path down the great hill. And the dead came behind. And Aragorn pushed them to ride yet further, and faster, for the stone must be reached, and the oath called for fulfillment, before the day was up. And on they rode, hard and fast, and still the dead came. The elven among the company could see them, pale banners and forests of translucent spears, and they were not frightened. The people of the villages and townships along the way shut their doors, and prayed to the valar of the comming of the lord of the dead, and Aragorn rode unopposed. Soon they came upon a bare hill, surrounded by grass only. The dead were still there, ever behind them. They rode up, and the company saw the great, black stone. It was a half-sphere, although a whole sphere in reality, for half of the stone was burried, and the diameter of that stone of Westernesse was twice a man's height. There Aragorn rode. A silver horn Aragorn, son of Arathorn, took from the son of Elrond. And he blew upon it, and stood before the stone. His harsh voice echoed with a northern accent in the southkingdom. "Oathbreakers, why have ye come?"
And a voice echoed a responce from the shadows, and the sound of it was the sound of cold death. "To fulfill our oath, and have peace."
And the company gave an involuntary shudder.

August 9
Dawn breaks, a grey morning of drizzle over Minas Tirith, as Gandalf and Pippin approach on Shadowfax. 'Surely that is one of the great steeds of Rohan. Perhaps the Rohirrim will come to our aid soon!' said the men of Gondor.
High in the White Tower, Denethor stares in the Palantir and despairs. He steels himself, enduring the jabbing laughter of Sauron, who torments him. He shows him the might of Mordor: the endless armies, vaster than vast. He shows him the black fleet of the Corsairs approaching from the south. There is no hope left. Against such a force, there can be no victory. 'We will crush you beneath our feet. But I will spare you until the last, so you may see the death of your womenfolk and children, so you may see your futile city ground into dust.' Denethor says nothing, and tears himself away.
He calls to him his captains. 'The hour of doom is nearly at hand. Tell me: is the wall of Pelennor repaired?'
'It shall be completed today, lord.'
'Now! Send out the Red Arrow to Theoden, light the beacons. All those who can bear arms must come now to Minas Tirith. And be ready, for the men of the southern fiefs approach this evening. Make room to stable their horses and garrison their men.'
They saw a grimness in him, and desolate look in his eye. Yet they feared and loved him, and rushed to do his bidding.
-----
Far off in Mordor, smoke began to rise from Mt. Doom. A troop of 100 trolls, is now ready in Minas Morgul, ready to carry the great battering ram Grond. Another 10,000 orc archers, and 10,000 orc heavy infantry joins the 10,000 heavy infantry already there. Until the blackness covers all the sky they must wait.
The 10,000 easterlings heavy infantry (axemen) within the Black Gate, are joined by a further 5,000. They are grim and fell, and do not fear the sun.
All await the command of the Lord of the Nazgul (that's you Sting:D).
The full might of the Haradrim, approaches from the south. And with them come 3,000 Variags from Khand, and 2,000 Troll-men from Far Harad. They enter South Ithilien. And the black fleet approaches.

The Lord of the Nazgul, continues to circle the overlying territory surrounding Minas Tirith. His troops soon come, and await the word. The lust for man-flesh begins to invigorate the orcs. They utter great battle cries in the Black Speech, which shall not be repeated here.
Soon, the Witch King senses that the time shall soon be ripe for an attack on the strength of Gondor. Full confidence of victory fill his heart, and he has no fear of the weakness of Gondor.
Soon troops begin to pour out of the Black Gate. Few times before has any been assembled in this number, and yet it is only a small amount of the greatness of the Lord of Mordor. As they begin to enter the realm of Gondor, grim tidings are set upon the city of Minas Tirith.
The Witch King, well aware of the influence of the Palantir on the mind of Denethor, waits for the order from his master to attack the tarks.

The city was now in sight, standing proud and stong in the fading light. Imrahil's spirit soared as he drank in the glory of it. His company marched at the rear of an army three thousand strong - all men of the Southern Fiefs answering the call of their liege lord Denethor. Denethor! How long has it been since Imrahil had last seen the Steward - several years at least. Now rumour had it that Denethor had grown old and sat like the Withered Tree before the Throne of the King. Had the Blood of Numenor thinned that much in the line of stewards? Had Denethor burnt away in grief over his dead wife - Imrahil's own dear sister? Imrahil was a man in the prime of his life - fair as a the morning sun over the Hill of Dol Amroth... but the blood of Numenor was still strong in him and in all the House of Dol Amroth. In his nephew Faramir too - in mind so like his mother Finduilas... Imrahil smiled at the melencholy turn his thoughts had taken. There would be time enough for grieving once the battle was won. He turned his eyes to the distant city and rode on...

The remnants of the Haradrim emerge from the woods of Ithilien, bloodied but unbowed. They still have their tower of strength, the oliphaunt. Here on the plains of the Noman Lands they feel safer at least. Perhaps the archers of Gondor will leave them alone.
And ahead they see a vast force emerging from the Black Gate... an enormous Easterling army, sent to take Cair Andros.
But from behind them comes a battle cry and arrows speed through the air. They turn to face this foe. The archers!
They gather around the Mumak, and raise their shields. Many fall, but the oliphaunt is led in a fierce charge. Swords are bloodied, as they turn on their foe. Many of the archers fall, hewn down or trampled, as they try to overcome the great beast. At last the Dunedain win, but at great cost. At last, with many arrows through its eyes, the Oliphaunt falls. Just ten of the Haradrim remain, fleeing towards the Black Gate and safety. But the dunedain rue the exchange bitterly: only 120 of their force remain.
And a new foe advances: the Easterlings are upon them, 15,000 strong heading to Cair Andros. It is too late to escape ....

Long they rode, and at length the ghost host overtook the riders. And Aragorn Cried out in anger and warning, and the host fell back. They had crossed many miles, and had received little sleep and rest. But still the shadow host came. Some of them rode horses, and some walked, but they came on, at the same speed, and they never tired. They came to villages, and there many fled, or locked their doors, and cried that the lord of the dead was upon them. Aragorn rode, stone faced, but the pain of having his own people run from him was evedent in his eyes, and he did not speak. One of the lords from that area came to Aragorn, though. And there they decided to go north, for Aragorn told him that the heir of Isildur would need him ere the end.
---edit- Some has been deleted, and some has been added to the end---
And that lord went forth, and gathered the men of southern Gondor, for few of them had come with their respective lords to Minas Tirith. And Aragorn had him keep these peoples away from his own, for fear that the shadow host would scare them away. And he sent Halbarad, his cousin, to lead that army, and to oversee it's growth. (Which was now more, because they were not scared away by the ghost army)

They break upon the small group of archers, wishing merely to continue their march, but the dunedain stand their ground. All but 100 Easterlings fall, but the dunedain lose many men too. Few can abide the coming of the Nazgul, but these are stout hearted men. But there is no hope for them. At last just half a dozen remain fleeing into the woodlands of Ithilien and on to Cair Andros.
And the Easterlings cheer in triumph. Where is the famed might of Gondor? Tomorrow Cair Andros!

A messenger comes to the lodgings of Pippin and Gandalf. 'You are summoned to council with Lord Denethor. You have been long in the city and you come not to his chambers. Now his captains arrive with new forces from the southern fiefs, and he would also wish to hear from one of the Periannath, who it is said saw the fall of his son.'
A long line of loyal men of Gondor enter the city, in the dust of the evening.
500 Heavy Infantry from Lossanarch and Ringlo Vale
500 Archers from Morthond
650 Light Infantry from Lamedon, Anfalas, Langstrand and many places besides.
And last of all came Prince Imrahil and his knights of Dol Amroth.
But the men of Minas Tirith, sighed and said 'What are these: we wished for many more. They cannot send their full strength to us, for the Black Fleet is nigh to our southern shores. What hope is there now?'
And since Faramir had not yet come these men were put under the command of Prince Imrahil.
As they make their way to see Denethor, Gandalf said to Pippin: 'Already the darkness flows from Mordor. Tomorrow there will be no dawn. Be careful of your words, Master Peregrin! This is no time for hobbit pertness. Theoden is a kindly old man. Denethor is of another sort, proud and subtle, a man of far greater lineage and power though he is not called a king.'
And the captains sat in the high chamber of Denethor, and with them Gandalf and Pippin. He sat with the shards of the horn of Boromir on his lap. To Pippin he looked with a stern eye and said: 'So you stood with my son at the last? Tell me more! Why did no help come? And how did you escape, and yet he did not, so mighty a man as he was, and with only orcs to withstand him? Tell me his tale,' he commanded, 'and then we must discuss what is to come.' he said looking at Gandalf. 'Will Rohan come?'

March 10
The Easterlings march through the night and into the day that does not dawn. Leading them, the Nazgul pursue their quarry. Victory will not be long delayed.
They pause, massing on the eastern bank of Anduin, looking across the stony shoals to Cair Andros, where Faramir holds the fort with 1,000 men of Gondor. Then rallying they cross the stream and break like wave upon their foes.
Each time they are thrown back, with great loss. But the swooping Nazgul strike fear into the hearts of foes, and the Easterlings press on heedless of their loss. Defeat and humiliation before their dark master is greater fear than death itself. And where the Nazgul strike, none can long abide their presence, and they fall sprawling on their faces with dread. Only when Faramir comes to rally them can they long stand and fight, and he sounds a defiant note on his trumpet.
But what chance is there? For every man of Gondor, fifteen Easterlings stand grim and determined. And they give no quarter.
At last the Easterlings triumph, and the enemy is forced from the isle back west and south. The passage of Anduin is won. And they pass on towards Anorien, to hold the road from the west.
200 men of Gondor remain with Faramir, stoutly marching still. Ahead of them 150 archers reach Minas Tirith with the ill-tidings of defeat. What does it matter that their valour cost the Easterlings 5,000: fully one-third of that which left the Black Gate? For now they hold the road against the Rohirrim.
But this is just a beginning. The Corsair fleet passes Tolfalas, and sails northwards toward Pelagir. Aragorn is still far away, crossing the Ringlo river this day.
And the army of the Southrons reaches the great crossroads in Ithilien. He pauses, waiting.
But the greatest evil is yet to come. For in this day, the army of Minas Morgul comes forth, with the Witch King at their head. He reaches the bridge and pauses, uneasy for a moment. He looks about him, some shadow of uncertainty in his mind. But then he gives the signal, and away they march. To war!

Imrahil stood above the Great Gate of Minas Tirith looking out across the Fields of Pelennor. His heart was sinking - his company had reached the city the previous evening and the people had cheered them as they entered the city - but in their eyes he could see their disappointment - they had expected a great army to come to them in their hour of need...
His meeting with Denethor had not gone well, his kinsman seemed cold and distant - uninterested in the fight ahead. His favoured son Boromir had fallen in battle somewhere on the northern borders, in a minor skirmish with an orcish warband and this news had taken the fight out of him. It was news indeed to Imrahil. Boromir's valour would be sorely missed in the coming days. What was worse - the city lacked leadership - Faramir was away holding the Crossing of the Anduin - hopefully he would return to the city soon - and rumour had it that Mithrandir was in the city - though Imrahil had not seen him - that thought gave him hope too. But as he stood alone beneath the darkling sky, waiting for a dawn that would never break - all hope seemed lost...

ooc He's just crossed the Ringlo river in Lamedon.
As the men of Gondor retreat from Cair Andros again and again the Nazgul swoop down. In terror the men of Gondor break and run, horse rear up and throw their riders. Only Faramir holds his men together, proudly marching. But again and again the Nazgul swoop. Will he make the Gate? The Black Breath, and the shadow of death is upon him...
ooc If Valar doesn't post for Gandalf someone should. He needs to drive off the Nazgul, or Faramir won't be able to go to Osgiliath tomorrow!

ooc: I got it! I got nothin better to do.
Mithrandir was riding hard, he cursed himself for terrying so long. He might not make it in time. Faramir was key! And he heard the Nazgul, foul creatures of Sauron, howling in the distance. Their icy cry could slay those of weak heart, and eventually slay those of stout heart also. He remembered Aragorn, and wondered if the old legends were true. Just in case, he decided to make sure that there was some Athelas in the city... He shook his head vigourusly, clearing all forien thoughts from his mind. This old human body was making his mind weak, weak enough to wander from the most important of things. He squeezed his hips, and Shadowfax sped on even faster. And they were a streak of white and silver coming from the north. That ball of pure, holy energy shot across the open fields before Minas Tirith, and came at last into the race to the gate. He looked up, and there were the Nazgul. Pitiful, he thought, that such were once the greatest lords of the east...perhaps the leader of them was even of the Numenorians...but he realized that he had no time to ponder, for he was a white streak eating up the blackness of the evil beings, and they could feel their omnious presence threatened by the newcommer. One turned to him, and a smile came to Mithrandir's lips. For he was Olorin again, and he laughed as the power of Manwe, lord of the earth, seared through his veins. A shaft of white, pure light erupted from his outstreched hands, and peirced the Nazgul. It gave a great cry, but this one did not dishearten the men of Gondor as had the others, this one was full of fear for the darkness and hope for the light, and the Nazgul could see that only their leader could hope to overcome this strange being, and they flew into the sky and back east, to go and cry to their master.
The white rider dimmed a bit, until he was simply an old man in white robes on a white horse. Shadowfax came to a halt at the horse of Faramir, and the old friends looked into one another's eyes.

*Faramir was thrown over by his horse who couldn't stand the terror of the winged Nazgul*
Faramir Argh! (stands up and trying to calm down his horse he sees his men overthrown also and are now running in utter fear) Men of Gondor! To the City, we cannot win this!! (the Nazgul swoops down again) Mount your horses!!! Do not run on foot! Don't leave your beasts!! (He mounts his horse who he has finally calmed a bit) Adenakhor!! Ride!!! To the city!!!
*but his men were still cringing from the terror of the skies. He rides up at their sides and tries to hold them together. At last they were able to conquer their fears and mount their bewildered horses and rode fast into Minas Tirith. But the Winged Nazgul flies down low, and Faramir's beast goes mad, and throws him down to the ground again and runs wildly on.*
Faramir*draws an arrow and let's it fly* Eru! Save us!!! *Just then a white light a bright hope came near mounted on a silver horse. It was Gandalf who, riding on Shadowfax has come to help Faramir. It was shadowfax who tamed his terrorized horse and was brought back just in time* Mithrandir!! *and Faramir mounts his horse and with all speed went into the City. Cair Andros falls into the hand of the easterlings. The Dunedain archers retreat to Osgiliath and Faramir Retreats to the City.

Faramir comes to Minas Tirith and is summoned to his fathers council. There too are Imrahil and Mithrandir. Faramir tells of the ambush on the Haradrim, and the coming of the Easterling army from the Morannen and the fall of Cair Andros.
And he tells also of the meeting with the two halflings, and their journey unto Mordor, and the gangrel who was guiding them to Cirith Ungol.
'Cirith Ungol!' Gandalf leapt to his feet. 'Why would he be leading them there? Treachery! I fear treachery from that foul creature.'
'The rest of my company I have sent south to strengthen the garrison at the fords of Osgiliath. I hope I have not done ill?' Faramir asked his father.
'Why do you ask? The men were under your command. Or do you ask for my judgement on all your deeds? Your bearing is lowly in my presence, yet it is long since you turned from your own way at my counsel. See, you have spoken skilfully as ever; but I, have I not seen your eye fixed on Mithrandir, seeking whether you siad well or too muchy? Alas! Alas for Boromir. For Boromir was loyal to me and no wizard's pupil. He would have remembered his father's need and not squandered what fortune gave. He would have brought me a mighty gift.'
But Gandalf said: 'Comfort yourself! In no case would Boromir brought it to you. He is dead and died well; may he sleep in peace! Yet you decieve yourself. He would have stretched out his hand to take this thing, and taking it he would have fallen. He would have kept it for his own, and when he returned you would not have known your son.'
At the conclusion of their debate Denethor ordered Faramir to Osgiliath the next day: 'It is there that the next blow will fall. They will have need of some stout captain there.'

March 11
The next day Faramir goes to Osgiliath at his fathers bidding and prepares his defences. Again all is black, as the great darkness covers the land.
The great Morgul-host prepares the assault on Osgiliath
The black fleet of the corsairs lands at Pelagir, and lands a force of many thousands in the south of Gondor.
Aragorn reaches Linhir, and enters Lebennin. The Rohirrim too move ever eastwards, but slowly, too slowly. Surely Mundberg will have fallen by the time they arrive?

ooc I'm just gonna push this on towards the main battle, ok? Hopefully you'll all post a bit more then!
March 12
The first blow falls against Osgiliath, where Faramir leads the remnant of the dunedain, and the Osgiliath Garrison.
Great Uruks who have long prepared for this day come swarming across on barges and rafts through the perpetual darkness. 5,000 assail the Osgiliath garrison, who hold the western shore. They are hard put to it, for the flats of the river banks suit the orcs well. And terror comes amongst them as ever and anon the nazgul swoop amongst the defenders, bringing terror to their hearts.
The garrison fights long and hard, and slay many orcs. But they cannot hold the position. 400 remain, and are being forced back. 150 Dunedain archers remain waiting.
'My lord!' cries Mablung to his captain, Faramir. 'Mayhap we should retreat to the Causeway Forts where we could defend ourselves better. We will lose what few men remain to use surely if we remain. For we have seen the full host, led by the Black Captain is nigh. Against such a host there is no hope on these open shores.'
Through the gloom they espy descending the road that runs down from the great crosswords of Ithilien the Morgul Host, 20,000 strong, and the 18,000 cavalry of the Haradrim, and other foes from the South. What can a few hundred do against so many?

Theoden and the Rohirrim camp by Minrimmon.

Aragorn sees a host of Corsairs ahead, setting fire to the homesteads and farmhouses of the people of Lebennin, as he approaches Pelagir.
But behind him a force of the southern fiefs is now rallying, though they will not press on, so great is the dread of the Army of the Dead that follow him in a shadowy host. It is but a days ride to Pelagir, but four thousands of Corsairs have landed from their fleet.

Aragorn rode for a day after leaving Lebennin. He sees before him the allies of Mordor destroying that of innocent people. He rides on, no expression on his face. There seems to be a small battle between the farms people and the corsairs, but he takes little heed. He knows that Minas Tirith has little time, and that he must come there soon. When he rode down, between the burning houses, both defenders and attackers fled. For they both thought that the lord of the dead had come to steal their souls. And the land that Aragorn's horse transversed was quiet and actionless.

*Then Faramir's voice was cut-off by an arrow shot from above, and hit his shoulder. Faramir falls from his horse and is taken to a covering of trees as the remaining soldiers push on but are fast diminishing. *

The Lord of the Nazgul surveyed the scene with satisfaction. The defences of Gondor were weak, and falling fast. The first line of defence was gone, and just a few archers stood in their way.
And word came that the captain of Gondor had fallen.
And he lifted his hand and sent forth the massed ranks of Minas Morgul into the fray. And he marched at their head and fear and terror struck at the hearts of the men of Gondor, and they look, and they saw Captain Faramir falling, and the Nazgul swept down from the sky. The orcs swarmed across in countless numbers and they were swept aside.
The infantry had already turned and fled. The archers were thrown down, and just 15 remained falling back bringing the body of Faramir with them across the Pelennor.

Mablung My Lord you are wounded and bleeding terribly we have to get you to the City!!!
Faramir No!! If we go Osgiliath will fall!!
*But alas, his wound was pierced by a southron arrow and it was deep and nearly fatal. Faramir, captain of Gondor faints from the loss of blood. Mablung Puts him on his horse and sped towards the City as the infantry in Osgiliath is conquered and their enemies make their way into the black gate. Loud shrieks and wailing chilled the skies over them as they hurriedly retreat towards Minas Tirith.*

The Lord of the Nazgul sends a company of 1000 Southron horsemen in pursuit across the plains of Pelennor. They have but one aim: to capture or kill the captain of Gondor. Their horses are fresh and fast and unencumbered. The retreating men of Gondor will not make it back to Minas Tirith unaided...

*the Nazgul come swooping down and the arrows went flying, but Mablung took his captain straight to the White city. Faramir, slowly loosing consciousness, sees the fall of his army in Osgiliath. He weeps silently and few teardrops fall from his eyes, but his body has now grown limp.
Finally they reach the gates of Minas Tirith and the people wailed and cried out to Faramir. Beregond rushes to them and carries Faramir straight to his quarters, and there Denethor the Steward of Gondor sees Sauron's plan and thinks he has succeeded.*

March 13
The Lord of the Nazgul gave the signal, and onto the Field of Pelennor poured a host of foes. Orcs came in their thousands, and the horsemen of Harad, with great Oliphaunts dragging siege engines behind them.
They do not assail the walls yet. Instead, busier than a swarm of ants, the orcs begin digging great trenches out of bowshot of the walls of the city. And they tear down the walls of Rammas Echor.
To the south, Elessar approaches Pelagir, and looks upon a great fleet and thousands of foes, but behind him come the ranks of the Dead, and many thousands of men from the southern fiefs of Gondor.
Theoden is in Anorien. His scouts come, warning him of a great force of Easterlings barring the road to Minas Tirith.

Aragorn (hehe, I'm not Elessar yet!) looks down on the fleets, frowning in disgust and contempt. He turns and signals for the provincial armies to split into two groups, and be ready to take seperate orders. He looks back and sees the shades of the dead. And an involuntary shudder ran up his spine. He orders the shades of the dead to decend upon the ships, and holds back the mortal people of Gondor. He holds his head up high, and rides at the front of the shadow host. They come slowly but steadily to the docks, awaiting a response to their assault.

*when Denethor saw Faramir lying on his bed, and after he sought the Palantir and was bewitched by Sauron's malice and wickedness, he then felt like there was no hope for everyone. That the middle earth was at the brink of destruction and it's end is very dark. He called Beregond to prepair a cairn for Faramir, and wood and fire. He wished to burned Faramir and himself to escape defeat. While Faramir went deeper into the blackness, deeper into the darkness...*
