Am I the only one that thinks Liv Tyler is trashy and not classy? She would not have been my choice for Arwen. What do you guys and gals think?

She has a precence on screen that is good but I wouldn't say she was the most beautiful women that graced ME. Of course beauty be in the eye of the beholder...

I am curious to know what was trashy vs. classy, and what were her good and bad points. I liked her in the part, but I'm open to other suggestions and points of view. Who would you have selected?

Liv doesn't dress classy or elegant. If you saw her in public, you wouldn't that that she was a classy lady.
I'm not sure who I would pick to play Arwen. I'm not into the who's who in Hollywood. I just know that Liv wouldn't be my choice for Arwen if I was PJ.

I think she was so so, but she is not an exellent actress, and in the real life she is totally diferent!
she is so silly!:o

I thought that Claudia Christian would have made a very good Arwen. But then I thought that almost all the characters looked to young.
Except McKellen and Lee of course

McGregor? McKellen perhaps? ;)
There were only two spots where Arwen was cheesy, as an actress. One, where shes says "If you want him, come and claim him!", and two, where she cries by Fordo's side. Other then her crying looking forced, it was also way out of charachter for her to be crying over someone she had only just met and hadn't even talked to. And it detracted from her royalty.

Liv Tyler sucked as Arwen, she appeared shrill and natty and hardly the way elves should. They made her out to be this rebel of elves IMO. and she knows cr@p all about her character, I once saw her in an interview about the role, she's such a bimbo!(even though she is not a blonde, & no offense to blondes either!).

Whilst I agree with Talimon*is that name for real*. I think she good in the role, and as for looks IMO I thought she was stunning especially with that scar:D *I know I'm sick* But i would be interested to hear who you would cast as Arwen Gamil.

I think Gwyneth Paltrow would be my choice.

She was okay. Not the best but pretty good. I lied how PJ mad Aragorn and Arwen be in love. Because when you read The Return of the King they just get married and they are not like even in love. At least I didn't think so.

she was good in the movie but it just wasn't arwen.... but i can see why they changed her character so whatever. anyway, i don't see why she's getting so much attention for it; she still doesn't do much besides haul ass over a river.
tasar
05-12-2002, 08:00 PM
No, I didn't like her. Everything was fine until she reached the river and started to shout cheesy lines to the Nazgul. And after that it got even better...
I'm already scared of TTT, because I have a hunch that again she'll be playing some none-book scenes. I really hope, that PJ doesn't make her kill anyone in a battle. After all, she's supposed to like embroidery. Then again, Xena the Warrior Princess liked it too. I guess New-Zealand has it's own influence...
But at least she was beautiful, (especially when standing next to Aragorn...hehe.)

I don't think she really fits in. She's been in too many other movies that are nothing like LOTR and you remember her more from them. She just doesn't suit the movie.:(

Well the simple fact is you can't argue with someone who's dad is in Aerosmith, its just not right!!!!

wow, thats such a good point legoman, wherever do you come up with such logic?
legoman
05-15-2002, 04:14 PM
I'm not entirely sure, it all just seems to make sense, her dad is a genius, and she's only an actor(ess, what are we supposed to call it now to be politically correct anyway?) cos she was in Aerosmiths videos.

You know, the more I think about Liv as Arwen: the more thankful I am that at as bad an actress as she is, at least they did not cast Denise Richards, Jennifer Love Hewitt or Alicia Silverstone.
That would have been a crime against humanity and Elv.....uhhh.....what is the word for the collective state of Elfness?

Elvanity, Elvity, or all Elven kind.

I think liv Tyleer is beatiful enough to be Arwen, but I do not like her as an actress and maybe the warrior princess make me think that she was not Arwen at all.

In keeping to the original topic of the thread, and separating my thoughts on the Characterization in the Screenplay from the actual acting and casting of Liv Tyler, I think it was fine casting myself. She has the bearing and presence to pull off the part, making the character fair in demeanor while still a bit alien when compared to Human traits. Slightly otherworldly yet down to earth...or I guess in this case down to Middle-earth...

ReadWryt?!? Saying anything good about Arwen? Someone must of hacked your name... ;)
I actually don't love Liv Tyler as an actress (she was good in Stealing Beauty though), but I think she has that sort of beauty that Arwen required. It's not otherwordly, as opposed to Galadriel.

Hey, I gotta admit...it's hard to separate myself from my feelings both about the way her part was written, and the little crush I developed on her way back when I saw her in "That thing you do", and even though my first choice for Arwen would have been Jennifer Connely, I think Liv did a standup job and fit the role...so there:p Neener!

i don't like her coz Eowyn is supposed to be this female warrior thing and Arwen is stealing that from her!
ReadWryt
05-26-2002, 08:24 PM
...so because you didn't like the characterization in the script, something she had no controll over, you don't like the actress?
Thorin
05-26-2002, 10:36 PM
Actually, as shallow as that sounds.....yes.
I never really cared for Liv that much...Never mind that she wasn't at all my idea of Arwen (though I can live with that because there is no way that the movie can match your imagination) but after seeing her in this petty defiance mode saying "If you want him come and claim him" and making a complete botchery of what Arwen is like, that kind of left a bad taste in my mouth for the actress.
Yes, I know it is not her fault, but putting all the images together with my idea of Arwen just put Liv in a bad light for me....Nothing against her as an actress, but she now represents everything wrong about Arwen.....

Wow, a whole thread of peeps talking about.........Me, arwen!!!!
I think she was ok in the film, but Eowyn will have 2 be pretty good too be more warrior like.

Uh, actually...in case you hadn't noticed this isn't a thread about Arwen, it's about Liv Tyler...

ReadWryt is right Arwen_evenstar. However, Arwen is discussed in other threads. You should check them out.
Actually, i think she is kind of ugly. i dunno, it's just something about her face...

Tolkien doesn't say much about it as the story unfolds, but if you read Appendix A, the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, you find out he fell in love with her when he was 20 and vowed to marry no one else. His love for her made him the intense Ranger he was. When he was about 49, they met again in Lorien and there she fell in love with him, and they were betrothed. Aragorn waited much more than 60 years to marry Arwen.

I think she played a very good role Liv.
It really wasn't her fault that she had to say those crappy lines.
It was the script, and she had to follow by the script so you really can't blame her for saying those crappy lines.

I don't really care for Liv Tyler that much!
I think that Elijah Woodis Better!!!
legoman
07-03-2002, 01:58 AM
Yes I agree, Elijah would've been much better as Arwen, he couldn't do Frodo, he just kept falling over...
I don't think that is how she ment it legoman.....
Don't get me started on Liv. I'm sure she's nice and all, but for heaven's sakes, they don't even use her real voice! And the only reason she's in the acting business is she has a famous daddy who can pay all sorts of talent agents etc etc. But hey, I guess they couldn't have made the movie without her, neh?

I didn't really mind her playing Arwen, but i was not amazed by good acting either... I personally can't think of anyone better to play her.

I can think of someone, Gwyneth Paltrow.

Liv Tyler is a hotty. Paltrow wouldn't have been convincing as an elf. Too popular.

liv tyler is the worst imo arwen they culda found she has none of the elven aloofeness and beauty shes supposed to have shes supposed to be the most beautifull thing since tinuviel HA her portrayal was cheesy and weak

I reckon they should have chosen someone different to play arwen but i don't know who. they just needed someone who was more middle earth like. see you look at the other actors and actresses and they all seem to fit in one way or another but liv tyler is more of a modern day chick not an older fashioned middle earth kinda chick. if that makes sense.:)

She's a unique beauty, but she doesn't quite fit into middle earth.

I like Lyv as a woman, her ski is sos white and tender...............;)
But her place is not in the movie.Glorfindel should save Frodo not she.But all you know that stupid producers in Holywood think only of earning much money and Lyv is important part of this conseption.

you like her white ski, have you being stalking her while she was on holiday in the alps?
You know whats great?... shes obviously gonna have pretty big parts in the other films too, when old PJ can make up some more stuff, so we get to have this conversation loads more. 'geddin'!
