View Full Version : Guild of Tolkienology

This thread is somehow linked to Elbereth's 'Guild of Scholars Hall', of which I am a part. But here, I, the Professor of the Dark Arts in Scholars Hall University (or is it College over there?), can bestow a Degree of Tolkienology. You must undergo a gruelling quiz, of which I will post the address of the site to. If you get 50-70%, you get your Diploma. If you get 70-80%, then you get your Honors i.e. Degree. If you get 80-95%, you get your pHd (Doctorate). And if you get 95-100%, then you get your Post-Doctorate!!! Be honest with your score as...
"Honesty is the best policy."
70% is not too hard to get IMO, even on this quiz. I got a perfect score (111/111), therefore making me Mr. Ulairi.
If you get your Diploma, then you still have your name normal. You just have your Diploma of Tolkienology. E.g. Ulairi.
If you have your Honors (Degree), then you are a Doctor of Tolkienology. E.g. Doctor Ulairi.
If you get a pHd (Doctorate), then you are a Professor of Tolkienology. E.g. Professor Ulairi.
If you get your Post-Doctorate, then you are a Mister of Tolkienology. E.g. Mr. Ulairi (Mister Ulairi). Which I am! You get a special title if you get a perfect score. You have the option of being a Lecturer of Tolkienology, as I am, and you get a scholarship to 'The Guild of Scholars Hall' to join and become a Professor there if you'd like. I know it's hard to do so, but, if you try, you can do it! So post away!
Here is the link:

So, answer away! Post your results here in the thread.

And what, as I am the Archguild master overseeing all of this, does this diploma of Tolkienology represent? Does it have any role playing values, or is it just a crazy thing with no real purpose?
Úlairi

It is a Guild where once I have the results, then we sort out memberships to certain people to become the students in 'The Guild of Scholar's Hall'. Those who get perfects scores are allowed to become Professors in the Guild. That is its purpose and I myself do not appreciate people barging in and accusing me of making a thread that serves no purpose, in which I have never done before. This is only the second time I have posted a Guild, and I do not like you coming in and attempting to 'impose' yourself over me Elessar.
¤-Elessar-¤

Indeed, you had never before started a guild, and I was simply making sure that I had no nonsense guilds under me, for I do not like or support them.

No problems Elessar. :)
Mormegil
05-13-2002, 02:07 AM
I got 106/111. 95.5%!
So that makes me Mr. Mormegil?
I'd rather be a professor, it sounds more knowlegeable.
Ulairi, I would like to know how you got all 111 correct. Some of those questions were seriously hard. And how did you know the personal questions, if you haven't read 'The Letters of JRR Tolkien'?
Are you being truely honest with yourself??;)
Úlairi
05-13-2002, 10:14 AM
Actually, I was telling the truth, you can look for my name in there, although it will take you a while I can guarantee. With The Letters of JRRT, I had done a project at school on JRRT himself and on one night I had to dress up like him and pretend I was him and I would answer questions about him to other people. So I myself know quite a bit on Tolkien the person. As for your title, you can be a Professor or a Mister, whatever you deem. In Medicine, in particualr areas, you can take upon the title of either Mister or Professor, so, you can choose whichever you want!!! Seeing as you are already a Professor at the Guild, you have upheld the standards of 'Scholar's Hall', proving that we really are Professors! Congratualtions Professor Mormegil and Ulairi hands him his Post-Docatorate.
Mormegil

Mormegil accepts his qualification and promises to try harder in future to acheive 100%.

I 110/111, I think that's 99%. How are there people on the high score list with 112 and 113???
Could I be a professor?
Úlairi
05-15-2002, 02:19 PM
110/111? I don't believe it!!! Well done. Professor Ulairi hands him his post-doctorate. You beat Mormegil!!! Na na na na na!!!
Aredhel
05-15-2002, 07:58 PM
I got 87% I think that was pretty good. I got 14 wrong. *laughs insanely*I got the PhD. so that makes me Professor Aredhel. Right Ulairi?

Well Mr. Ulairi,
I have scored a 11 out of 11. Here is the link to prove ithttp://www.lordotrings.com/quiz/quiz6eval.asp
It was a very fun test.

For the record I got 97/111 which is 87.3%
I haven't read up on J.R.R.Tolkien the person.
some of the questions were pretty obscue.

My apologies. 11 out of 11 Mithers??? The test is out of 111. By the way, those who wish to take up any title that they deem it is fine with me as long as your score corresponds with your title. E.g., I belive someone scored a Mistership, but decided to keep the title of Professor.
Mithrandir

I am sorry that was a simple spelling error. I scored a 111 out of 111. So that means I got a 100%.
Does this mean I get the special awards for the perfect score?

I find this hard to believe. However, I trust your word. For acieving a perfect score you gain a scholarship to 'The Guild of Scholar's Hall' as a student there. There, you can debate with the Professors running the Hall.

If you're well into LOTR and the Hobbit you can do pretty good. I had 91 out of 111, 81,98%
Not bad, I messed up a couple of Dwarven names out of the Hobbit and I didn't know the name of Tolkiens mother, nor Frodo's mum, to be honest. Cool test nonetheless.
I'd do better with my books present, like a real professor.;)
Walter
06-04-2002, 10:45 AM
DGoeij, if you did it without the book at hand the 91 are a remarkable result. However, what took me by surprise is how many people around here scored 111 without cheating...
...especially since I think that there are at least two incorrect answers in the test...
DGoeij
06-04-2002, 11:06 AM
Really? Muhahahahaha. At least the one about the sword of Theoden has the right answer. I looked it up. After I answered wrong, that is. :(
Personally I didn't think it was too hard. I had to guess my way into round four or five, because I really didn't know the first question. But most of them were about things one could have read about in either the Hobbit, LOTR or the Silmarrion. The questions about the latter I found hardest, because there's way to much information in it. At least I got the Trees right. :)
Walter
06-04-2002, 11:24 AM
...oh, and if you click the "Back" button on your browser you get a second (third, forth, etc.) chance...
...which I am sure no one did who scored 111, 112 or 113 (out of 111), of course... ;)
DGoeij
06-04-2002, 11:56 AM
Hush. I thought that was a secret. I wanted to get a perfect score next time.

06-04-2002, 11:57 AM
...I don't known what I scored because I didn't make it through the fourth level. It was labelled hard and it was.
Where on middle-earth is The Hall of fire? Chamber of fire?
Jeez... I wonder how they were translated in the Finnish version. Anyhow, I don't know Jack Schitt.
DGoeij
06-04-2002, 12:00 PM
Minas Tirith and Rivendell, if I remember correctly. Or the other way around?
But I know I made a reasoned guess, because some of them weren't right for sure.

Well done to anyone who got over 100 without hitting the back button as Walter suggests. To be honest, I would consider myself extremely well read in Tolkiens works and I managed 87, so for those of you who scored highly and don't post often in the books debate section of the forum; why not?

First I already have take in the test about 8 months ago. But I know far less then I do now, I had not even read the Sim. so can I take it agian for your guild?
And Second is there any point to this beside bragging rights?

Galdor, this thread has purpose and in intertwination with 'The Guild of Scholar's Hall', and it extends memberships, and that is the sole purpose for this thread, along with a few subtexts such as self-gratification, building of self-esteem. However, I believe self-esteem myself to be one big fallacy on the part of the human race. We are an esoteric society, and I'd like to remedy some of that through this guild also. Feel free to take the test again, and good luck.

I think the quiz lowered my self esteem, I can't bring myself to even try and finish it, I figure maybe later this summer after I've had time to bulk up on my Tolkien knowledge, I'll start fresh. I wouldn't be surprised if there's questions in there that are wrong, I don't remember what it was but there was one question that I got wrong and I was so sure it would be right, I even consulted my book after, but that could just be me. I guess it's not impossible to obtain 111 even after that, if someone just guessed on the deliberately wrong ones and got them right.
P.S. Is anyone in the LotR Fan Club? I want to know if it's any good before paying to join.

As for professors...those have already been chosen. If you are interested in become a professor...PM me with your request and let me know what area you are interested in specializing and I will let you know if there are any openings.

For anyone claiming to have got over 100 without cheating I would just ask why you are not actively debating in either The Silmarillion section or the other Books section. Surely your knowledge of Tolkiens work would be an asset to those of us 'mere mortals', who attempt to thrash out the many questions relating to the authors work.
Please, come and join us and help us to learn what you already know. Many of those within the forum who at one time might have been considered knowledgeable in Tolkiens work are but amatuers in comparison.

Well there's an easy solution to this issue: If either one of you wants to be sure just go to the site again and compare each of the 111 questions with what Tolkien has written about it. Then you would know whether each answer is right or wrong.
Samwise_hero
08-14-2002, 08:10 AM
No, actually it wan't me that figgured out the questions were wrong, as i said before someone was kind enough to tell me. It is actually written in this topic. And no one would have been able to memorise all the answers to those questions. They are to hard to remember off the top of your head.

I, for one, did not cheat. I think the one I got wrong was something about Cirith Ungol, but it said the answer was something else. AFter I finished the quiz, I looked it up, and their answer was definitely wrong!

When I first read all about the people here who scored 111 out of 111, I thought I must not even TRY the test, for how could I ever reach the level of those true scholars!
Yet, I decided to do it. And I did! And I got 106... But I also found out that if I push the "Back"-button and pick up a new answer I'll finally get the right one! So, I could very well score all the 111! You can do it too!
I appologize to those of you, who would be HONEST enough as to admit that they did NOT use the "Back" button and got their result because they know all about Tolkien!
As for this quiz-test - it was a marvellous way to recall some details from the books!
For which I thank you, Ulairi.
BTW, what exactly do we need this result for? I thought this was Grond's Guild. ... Or is it not?

It wasn't originally Grond's Guild but it kinda is now.
The point of the test is to determine what kind of tolkienologist you are. You see i'm a professor. I was really happy when i found that out because i'm a professor at 15 years of age!!!!!

I have to disagree, Sam!
Even my result of 106 I achieved with searching for facts in the respective written materials!
This is NOT and can NOT be a valid evaluation! One, I guess, has to know Tolkien just as Ancalagon, Grond, Maedhros, Elu Tingol and the other Grand Masters in this forum (sorry if I've missed the name of someone!) to call yourself a true Tolkienologist!!!
What I found that quiz-test useful for, was that it made me search for facts that I could not well remember or never knew about! Thus I only improved a bit further my knowledge!

Just wondering if we members are still required to take this test, or has that changed since the leadership has changed?

I was saying that the reason for the test on this thread was to determine if you got a phd or a diploma or what ever and if you became a professor or what. I don't know what you thought i meant but that's it.
By the way, you used to have to take the test to determine what stance you are in the Tolkienologists, i don't know if the same rules still stand. Do they Grond???
I can tell you that Grond based my ranking on how long I have been reading Tolkien, which books, and how many times I've read them.
I took this test after I was ranked and no one asked me to do it.
As far as I know Grond has not based our rankings on this test, I have saw him ask no one to take it.

Ok, thanks guys! That was kind of what I had gathered from reading through posts and from other info thrown here and there. Personally, I like things the way they are now better than the way they were then. But, that's just my humble opinion.

Sorry i'm wrapped up in the old times, heck i'm not even a member any more. Ever since the guild was taken over by Grond. (Not meaning to offend)

Come join us! Just pm Grond telling him what books you've read and how many times. He'll give you your ranking and take care of the rest.

Nobody could have 111/111.
There are some errors. Do you count those as correct even if the Quiz didn't or did you just go back and try to find the 'correct' one? Anyways both are acceptable.
By the way I had 5 errors (including 2 that I am absolutely sure they are correct)

One thing I noticed was about the Variags of Khand. Variags are relative of Wain-Riders...

Good Afternoon All,
I got an overall score of 108 out of 111 so this came to an average of 97.3 % so you can call me Mr Alcfalath Ringlosse.
Good Afternoon.

I didn't even get to the end, because I got the first question on level five wrong. Up to then, I got eleven questions wrong, using only head knowledge (ie: I didn't look anything up).

To be honest, I checked my resourced many time during the test. Even then there were some questions difficult to be located. The sixth part is really hard. I wonder if those perfect scores are achieved by knowledge only. I guess I have a long road before becoming a Tolkien afficionado

That test does get really hard. I'm too scared to take it again. i've slacked a bit on my Tolkien knowledge lately because i've been concentrating on school. Second last year is as important as your last year of high schhol you know. LOl!
