I think I'm giong to buy the video in August, to hold off my yearning for LOTR a little longer, then get someone nice that I know to buy me the extended DVD when it comes out (supposedly in November)

Don't be silly! Don't buy both - once the second one comes out you'll never look at the first one again, will you, because the Nov 12th DVD will have the extra footage (including the gifts of Galadriel). But I too am loathe to wait three extra months before seeing the film again, so I'm going to rent it from a video shop, then buy the better one later, then play it to death for a month until TTT comes out.

Good things come to those who wait. Patience is a virtue.
There's your answer. Wait for the good stuff. I know I am going to.

New Line tells us that the two DVD's are different, and that you won't get gyped if you own them both. As much as it sounds like a marketing scheme, there is some grain of truth in it all. Basically, short of maybe the theatrical trailers, the two DVD's will have little in common. The August edition will have the movie and 3 documentries, as well as the featurettes from the website (which I have seen just about all of already anyway :)). However, there will be no director's commentary (something I doubt I'd ever use on a 3 hour movie, although perhaps this would be an exception). So basically the August edition is New Line putting together everything they already have, and giving it out as quickly as possible. There is nothing really new here, but it's all together in a slick package. I've already seen two of the documentries, and they are pretty good (but nothing special). The only really cool new thing on August version (other then the movie :)) is the 10 minute TTT preview.
The November edition, on the other hand, is giving FotR the treatment it deserves. It's 4 DVD's (2 of them being for the movie with the commentary tracks), and then 2 more DVD's with who knows how much behind the scenes stuff. People might not think that 2 DVD's could be filled with info, but there is just so much that was filmed for this movie behind the scenes. In fact, for over 24 months there was this documentarian just going around with PJ and filming him. So there is a heap of stuff to show off. But the main jule in the November release in the extra footage, and for that I'm excited. There is a slim chance that it won't be as good as the theatrical release, but I really doubt that.

Wow, Talimon. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm now practically sure I will buy the november release. Documentaries I've seen on TV and trailers on the internet. It's the extra footage I'm really really really really (well, you get the point) interested in.

I'm buying the first one on VHS and the second one on DVD (by then I'll have enough money to buy a DVD player)
so it's confirmed Nov 12???

That's what I've heard, but nobody is stopping them from changing it. They want it to fall over christmas time, no doubt, and by coincidence over the release of TTT as well.

Ok, My question is... will the November DVD 4pack have all the featurettes and documentaries (Scifi documentary, interviews, etc?) included in the August DVD? or is the Aug DVD the only place I can get that content?
Because I want the interviews, and specials on the Aug disks, but if they are also going to be on the November disks, I'll wait.
thanks

New Line isn't that stupid :). The current word on the street is that the content on the 4 dvd set will be brand-new material.
This is a double-edged sword for us fans. On the one hand this means that if we only buy the 4-disc set we'll be missing the content from the August release. On the other hand, it means that we can buy both versions and not feel ripped off (since non of the material will repeat itself).
Personally I am going to be buying both for the following reason: the movie. In terms of special features the August release doesn't hold anything special for me. I've seen all the documnetries, seen all the featurettes (they are all from the website), and will be more then satisfied with a cheap pirate version of the 10 minute TTT preview. The reason I want the August version, however, is for the theatrical cut of the film. For better or worse the 4-dvd version will not have the original theatrical cut on it. The extended edit will be included instead. Now we all know how the extended version is supposed to be all mighty and superior, but I have my doubts. I will be getting it regardless, but I think that the theatrical cut will still be worth something. To me they'll just be two slightly different movies. I can see myself not wanting to sit throught the extra 30 minutes. It's long enought as it is. So for me they're just two different movies, and I don't feel ripped off having both.

Thanks Talimon
I will want the original theatrical cut! How obvious. Ok, it's going to be two sets of DVD's for me. New Line is going to be rolling in it after this. Thanks so much for the expert previews.
