First and foremost, let me extend my greatest thanks and appreciation to the Webmaster for the inclusion of 'The Guild of Ost-in-Edhil' to the forum.

I offer you the warmest welcome possible into this 'Fortress of the Eldar.' You now have free reign to offer wit, wisdom, debate and challenge under the name of the Guild. If you feel the need to start a thread for the Guild members to participate in, the floor is open to you. If you wish to start an RPG you have the full support of your Guild members in the writing, for all here are more than capable to add their penmanship to the fray. Enjoy this hallowed ground and post often.
Others I have no doubt will follow along shortly to join these hardened weather-stained ancients of Middle-Earth.
The Guild of Ost-in-Edhil rules will be posted shortly and arrangements made to begin the order of business.

Just a note to all those new members we now have in the Guild, welcome:)
Please feel free to begin offering up your wit and wisdom to your fellow members and let's get some heated debate underway. It is your Guild to use as you will and debate furiously amongst yourselves. Enjoy.

Just thought that I would post a note here that I am now back on the forum (though not quite as regularly as before.) Having said that, I am ready for Ancalagon to come up with a mind stimulating guild activity soon. Maybe we could divide up into teams and debate a certain topic. You choose, good Dragon. :)

Ahh, Grondmeister, it is nice to see someone of the Guild actively seeking entertainment. The Guild has been somewhat lacklustre of late. I am concerned that my name appears all around the as either thread starter or last to post:(
Anyhoo, I will seek the interest of the good members for an internal debate, while I ask you to prepare the question:)

Yay guys! been waiting for some good debates too (and my thirtieth!) Hopefully the new twenty-something guild will add a little spice to our debates - I hear they've got some scary people over there - Maybe a challenge is in order?

LOL@RD, you look fairly relaxed in that rocking chair my good friend:)
Anyhoo, what would you like?
1. An internal debate within the Guild to get you creative juices flowing.
or
2. Issue a challenge to another Guild or even simply a combination of members from around the forum who might be interested in a debate, since some of the Guilds are not quite ready for entering debates just yet!
The choice is yours.

The choice is yours. I have the absolutely perfect topic. I suggest we issue a challenge to the twenty-somethings as many of them were cocky, irratated or plain upset when we formed our old-timers guild. Maybe they'll be looking to kick some aged arse. I'll moderate the debate, as everyone knows that I am the most peaceable and unbiased person on this forum *sticks tongue in cheek*.

As you may already be aware; Grond has departed from the Guild (under good terms) in order to take over 'The Guild of Tolkienologists.' I would guess that he will be seeking new members and would eagerly poach many of our esteemed Ost-in-Edhil members;)
However, I envisage fireworks between these two guilds in the future, and I can only hope that loyalties remain firmly in the Ost-in-Edhil camp!
Challenges will be fast and furious and debates; long and difficult. We shall meet fire with fire, blow with blow. Come then Grond, let us laugh together in the face of battle;)

It is with deep regret and some humility that I am resigning my position in the Guild of Ost-in-Edhil to take over as Guildmaster of the Guild of Tolkienologists. I love this place and you guys but Anc was disappointed in not having enough fresh meat on the table from a debate standpoint. This led to a horrendous argument between himself and me and ended up with us no longer speaking to one another.
Since he has a new standing in the forum (which will talked about in the future) he has become arrogant and mean spirited. I can no longer reside in a guild where he is Master and have therefore begun my own guild. I will be recruiting members from everyone and anywhere. I would encourage anyone in this guild who is also tired of Anc's tyrannical ravings and uncomprimising demeanor to come and sign up at the Guild of Tolkienologists.
Down with Dictatorship (Anc's way) and up with Dictatorship (my way).
All are welcome.

An important announcement from a former guild member. Each and everyone of you needs to look in on the debate thread and also the debate voting thread. It is important that we all vote. I ask everyone to vote on who they think proved their point the best and not what guild you happen to be in. I have posted a very similar message in my own guild. Goold luck, Anc. :)

Cheers for the invite and for welcomes:)
Just a little intro oput of courtesy: I first read Hobbit and LOTR when I was a kid and from about age 11 onwards I was pretty much instantly hooked. I guess that I wouldn't call myself a real Tolkien scholar as I've never made a proper study of the History of Middle Earth volumes (apart from the Lays of Beleriand). I've digested pretty much everything else a number of times over the years though and I'm as passionate about Tolkiens work now as I was as a teenager.
Anyway - I'm glad that there is a place here for the slightly older crowd as some of the other boards scattered around here and elsewhere on the net seem to be dominated by the usual "isn't Legolas hot?" or "is Sauron an allegory for the neuclear bomb?" or "i've noticed that Tolkien has nicked some ideas off George Lucas". Anyway, this place could be an antidote for all that so hello to all:)

Hmmm, it seems this 'age' issue rears its ugly head once again. I wonder if it is more trouble than it is worth? Maedhros may have been right, even though it was not intended to be descriminatory.
What do y'all think? Should we drop the age requirement and simply find some other way of enticing new members in;)
Arvedui
12-10-2002, 10:19 AM
It just might be that the age-thing does refrain us from attracting some of the members of the forum who could very well have belonged here.
There are teens on this forum who knows almost as much as me about Tolkien's works. Not as much as me, of course, but almost:D :D :D
Therefore I think it might be an idea at least to discuss it.
Ancalagon
12-10-2002, 11:30 PM
Well then, I guess that even though the Guild is full of oldies as it is now, we should just drop the 'age' requirements. However, I do not feel it was ever intentionally discriminatory, however it was viewed by some as such. Therefore, it seems wise to drop it altogether!

Is there some rule about posting in this thread that I do not know about? I know that non-members have posted in here before and nothing was said, but twice now I have posted here and both times some self proclaimed old person has posted an indirect insult.

Okay, I have a question. Maybe this is a dumb question. Probably, actually, knowing me. But my question is this:
Ost-in-Edhil can mean two things: City of Elves or City of Stars. Either translation could have been used, especially since the Elves loved the stars. So here is the actual question: Which did Tolkien mean?
(If this is just insanely stupid, just tell me how stupid I am and get it over with.) ;)
Gothmog
02-13-2003, 10:48 PM
You cannot be in any way stupid as you have asked a question to learn something.:) I just hope that I can give you a worthy answer.
As for which translation would be used, I would say that it is most likely to be City of Stars. The Elves reveared the Stars so this would be a suitable name for their City. As for City of Elves, there were a number of cities built by the Elves and could claim this title yet none did.
This is just my opinion on the matter.

There are 4 debating guilds:
Guild of Ost-in-Edhil
Guild of Tolkienology
Guild of Scholar's Hall
Guild of the Periaur
Someone can only be a member of one of these guilds at a time to avoid conflicts during inter-guild debates and such, or at least that is my understanding of it...
Ancalagon
06-09-2003, 11:35 PM
There is no problem that I can see with joining the Guild of Ost-in-Edhil, though I would suggest that a member decides where their loyalties lie in tournaments. However, I will leave the question of entry and such decision-making to Turgon who alone holds the keys to the gates of this fine fortress!
Seek for the one they call Turgon and within his hidden Kingdom you may find the answers to these riddles:)

Uhmm, Elendil, for the inter-guild debates there are 5 guilds, aren't there? ;) Don't tell me I just spent a week debating for GoE/D and that it doesn't count for anything. *grins*

Well, there are officially 4 "debating guilds" that were in existance before the Tournament. In the Tournament, it was decided that all guilds (including the GoO, GoE, and GoD) should have a chance to participate. But the old rule still stands, that someone can only be a member of one of the 'official' debating guilds, to avoid confusion. That help? :)

Someone can only be a member of one of these guilds at a time to avoid conflicts during inter-guild debates and such, or at least that is my understanding of it...
This was sort of an unofficial rule and it looks like it's not as rigid anymore. Several people that are participating in the Debate Tournament are members of two guilds that are IN the tournament. The only 'problem' is that a member must plead their debating allegiance to only one guild.

Yup - It's "It" by Stephen King. And if you thought the mini-series was scary, you absolutely must read the book!
