I read it about 12 years ago and again this past summer.

Are you refering to the chasing of orcs as the first part of the book?

*Edited because I'm a boob and my brain hurts. Boromir died at the begining of the TT not the end of the FoTR.

The Death of Boromir is the opening chapter of TTT, but it was the end of the first movie. One of the few chances which I could understand perfectly well.;)
I have been through the entire story several times, since I first read it when I was 13 or so, meaning 10+ times (can't remember how much). I still love it. And I'm probably as excited for the movie as you are.
I hope the chase is going to be wonderfull, with the Rohirrim flattening the Uruk-hai.

no, the best part will be the ents tearing down isengard, and i cant wait to see how they do shelob.

I'm afraid you will have to wait for Shelob a little longer. The strong rumor, in a thread I can't remember, was that in the movies she will make her appearance not until ROTK.
And of course, what I'm most excited for is Helms Deep, the mustering of Rohan, but mostly the Storming of Isengard. I really hope they did a good job on the Ents.:)

The Shelob change is not a rumour, it's from PJ's own mouth. But maybe he's just trying to confuse us :).

While your sighing and crying, in the same interview PJ said the Scouring of the Shire was cut as well. Now that's a change that I REALLY have to disagree with.

DGoeij

Also true, but maybe you should delete that, since the thread creator just finished the TTT.;)

Talimon

He didn't say he just finished it. He could have finished 5 years ago for all we know. And he doesn't even know what Scouring of the Shire is, if he hasn't finished RotK yet. Doesn't really matter :). Bigger spoilers on these forums then that.

Could be a she for all we know too.:D
It's your post, and you're true about the spoilers. Does that 'spoiler free' thread still exist?

The spoiler free forum is inside this one. I don't think anyone posts there that much.

Personally I think the third one is/will be the best movie out of all of them, but like I said that's just me.

I've read it dozens of times myself.

I'm just hoping that the next two won't be really really bad (and I'm talking about SW episode I kinda bad) and I think that Helms Deep will be the best bit. It has some of the best lines in the whole book, like "Behold the White Rider" cired Aragorn. "Gandalf has returned!" That was such a great moment, as was when Gandalf came back to Aragorn & co. in Fangorn Forest

I predict that the realisation of the battle scenes and action scenes will be handled skillfully by Peter Jackson. However, every scene which requires the director to appreciate the subtlety of the interplay between characters will be fluffed. I dread:

1. Gandalf's return at Fangorn
2. Gandalf and Theoden
3. Oh Jesus! Aragorn and Eowyn.

Theoden: King of Rohan.

Eomer: Third Marshall of the Mark. Basically he's the third highest in command in Rohan. He's also Eowyn's sister, which by some family tie makes him Thoeden's "sister-son".

Wormtongue: Theodens "advisor", but actually a in league with Saruman. He advises Theoden to better Sarumans agenda (that is until he's unmasked by Gandalf).

Eowyn: Theodens sister-daughter. I don't remember how this works out family-wise, but for all practical purposes both Eowyn and eventually Eomer are as near to Theoden as daughter and son (at least socially).

Éomer and Éowyn are brother and sister. They are the children of Théoden's sister. Théodred Théoden's son being dead (killed by orcs at the battle at the Fords of Isen) he cherishes them as his own children (his sister is also dead).

I personally have never read the books myself. However, my father has read the entire trilogy at least four times aloud to us. They are wonderful!

Hullo! This is my first post of what will hopefully be many. Good to be among fellow Tolkien fans. :D

But no time for extended greetings; there is an uncertainty among some of you that I may clear up with these words:
Peter Jackson himself is a true Tolkien/LOTR fan as many of you know. He would not tackle important events (like the return of Gandalf) in a subtle or undeserving fashion, and I have faith that even the meeting of Éowyn and Aragorn will be a memorable moment indeed. PJ has shown utmost dedication in these three films, and his knowledge of the books has put those long hours to good use. If you haven't yet watched the many documentaries on the first two-disc DVD release, then GET TO IT. You will find proof of what I say is true. And to newbie fans, the likes of who have only been introduced to Tolkien's fantasies by means of the cinematic release of Fellowship of the Ring, I cannot stress it to you more to READ THE BOOKS! Reap the rewards of knowledge of the lands of Middle Earth and the journeys of the Kings and Heroes of Old. If I were Peter Jackson I would have begun with a movie of The Hobbit, instead of leaving millions wondering what the heck Bilbo is talking about when he says "I want to see mountains again, mountains Gandalf." and when he scares the children with the story of the trolls turning into stone at sun's first light. Don't you agree?

Above all else, these films serve as a testament to the author of these and many other masterpieces. J.R.R Tolkien would have been proud to see his works come to life in the way that has been demonstrated by Peter Jackson's cinema release of Lord of the Rings.

...okay, that was dramatic, I know. Still, you should read the books before you see the movie. After all these films are based on the novels, not vice-versa. Books offer much more detail for those who seek it.
And as for the sword-fight...Éowyn DOES take up a sword, but for a far greater purpose. Sorry, no spoilers here. Read Return of the King if you're interested.

Not bad for a first post I hope.

We decided to put the scene with Shelob in TROTK because if we did it in the TT there wouldnt be much for Sam and Frodo to do. --Peter Jackson

Make sure you put in some sarcasm next time, so that people don't assume you are actually making legitimate quotes. PJ never used those exact words, nor did he ever officially give that as the reason Shelob was moved to RotK. It's important to make the destinction.

Okay, I've read the books many times and the scenes I'm looking forwrad to the very most are Helm's Deep and the confrontation with Saruman and Gandalf - and the reunion of Merry & Pippin with Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf. That's bound to be great.

Since they're saving Shelob and Paths of the Dead for ROTK, we'll have to wait for those.

Wait now. Here is another thing worth noting: There is a legitimate rumour that TTT ends with Aragorn entering the paths of the dead. I think, if you follow the story chronologically, Shelob is more like in the middle of the battle of Pellenor fields (remember that after Sam rescues Frodo there is that quote about the shadow leaving, obviously alluding to the fact that the tides have turned on the field of Gondor). There are different rumours on how TTT will end, and I think the one that has Saruman dying has some basis behind it. Obviously Saruman is the main villain of TTT, and not having him die is kind of anti-climactic (or so one could argue). I'm not buying into this yet, since Christopher Lee has said he plays in all three movies. But that is one possibility.
