Although we are not yet open for play, feel free to log into our server, register an account, and take a peek. Once you've registered for an account, you'll be able to submit a character application (if you're interested in joining our staff), email our staff list, and browse our online help system.
Our Vision
We hope to create a vast, breathtakingly beautiful and stunningly detailed rendition of Tolkien's masterpiece. Set to open in the year 2460 of the Third Age, Shadows of Isildur will feature the richness and complexity of conflict that marks Tolkien's work, and yet, will also provide the freedom for our players to have significant impact upon the history (and story-yet-to-be) of Middle earth and its denizens. We are an RPI MUD, which means a number of things that many of you may not be familiar with; most importantly, the death of one's character is permanent, and in-character behavior is strictly enforced.
With a staff roster of over a dozen immortals after little more than a month in development, a daily flood of emailed enquiries regarding our progress, and well over a hundred registered accounts, the interest level in Shadows of Isildur has been momentous. Our opening will be spectacular, indeed.
If you find yourself yearning to contribute your piece to this burgeoning dream, please feel free to create an account on our server and submit a character application with a bit about your experience in the space provided to fill in your character's background information. Or, if you prefer, you can send the staff an email from the link provided in the login menu.
Some of Our Features
The Shadows of Isildur codebase stems originally from our sister MUDs, Harshlands and Forever's End; our coder was granted permission to use the Harshlands base for a project of his own. Although we share a common lineage, some of our fantastic new improvements do a great deal to set us apart, with many more enhancements and fixes coming in the near future.
-A level-less, class-less system of code arbitration, based entirely on a large list of skills that vary both in maximum value and rate of progression from person to person.
-An easy-to-learn system of ranged weaponry that provides a great deal of realistic detail and variety while minimizing the tactical know-how required from the player.
-A detailed and sophisticated player writing system, with support for languages, scripts, books, ink colors, handwriting styles, and more.
-An account-based login system, permitting direct server-player communication via email, as well as a character generation sequence modified on-the-fly by the number of roleplay awards accrued by any given account. Multiple characters may be stored in every account (though only one may be alive and in-game at any one time), allowing nostalgic players to review the statistics of long deceased or retired PCs.
-An entirely wounds-based system of combat, including wound infection, physician-related skills for treatment, and realistic body prototypes.
-Various back-end code enhancements, increasing server stability while (hopefully) minimizing resource usage, resulting in less server-end lag.
-"Soft reboot" code, allowing the immortal staff to reboot our server and instantly activate any building additions to our world, all without disconnecting our players.
-100% crash redundancy; when we "crash", our server simply resets -- no more disconnections, interruptions, or mess. With a few more minor modifications, any crashes we may have will become entirely transparent to our players.

Come look around, register for an account, play with us!! :D
This world has been carefully written by resident LOTR experts, it IS Tolkien's Middle-earth.
Come be a part of our team, make Middle-Earth YOUR world.
If you are familiar with muds or not, and a Tolkien fan, this game is for you. :)
Blessed BE!
