Which of these is the worst?
-The Hobbit (1977)
-The Lord of the Rings (1978)
-The Return of the King (197?)
All three are animated.
-The Hobbit stays close to most of the book leaving out Beorn and the last chapter (or two???).
-The Lord of the Rings stays with the books (the books being FotR & TT) leaving out Tom B., and changing the elf who comes and meets Aragorn to Legolas.
-Return of the King does in my opinion the worse adaption. Aragorn is rude to Gandalf, there is no mention or appearance of Legolas or Gimli.
While there are more things that can be added to all three I'm just going to give this much because I'm [B]lazy[B].

Man, that's a tough one. I would have to say that they all tie for last place.
The Hobbit was cute with a capital K. I felt like I had to get checked for diabetes after that sugar-coated turkey.
The Lord of the Rings was slightly less kutsey-pie but the production values stink on ice. I've seen better student films at the local community college.
The Return of the King did at least try to use some unusual visual tricks to liven up the severely cut-down screenplay. It failed.
In short, I think that all three of these films suffer from "fast-buck syndrome". The producers were hoping to put out a cut-rate disneyesque movie on the cheap. And it shows. These toons should be rated G-. No one over the age of four admited.

I haven't seen the Hobbit, but I would give my vote to the LotR no matter what. The quality of drawing is just so horrendous in places I want to cry. Gandalf moves cery strangely and hobbles a lot more than before. Everybody's expressions are overdone and pasty, and all the action happens either too fast or too slow. The Orcs were all right in it though, very scary.

I haven't seen any of these, so I'm no judge. But from what, I gather, they seem to be all animations, and there's a major defect in that: in most people's mind, it associates Lotr with a children's book. Not that all animations are directed towards children, but in this particular case it looks like making Tolkien into some Disney tripe. The first animation of Lotr started with this misconception of Lotr; I didn't see it, but I read Tolkien's indignant letter to the producer, and that was enough. On the same lines, about a week ago, I went down to my bookshop to check about the new translation of Lotr into French (the reviews were very disparaging, but then NO translation can do justice to Tolkien) only to find they had put in Children's section! I had spent quarter of an hour looking for it in the Classics section before I thought of bothering an assistant. In the end, I didn't buy it, or thank the assistant (who was obviously in charge of classifying) and out of spite I read the paper without buying it before going home. That'll learn 'em!

I didn't even know that ROTK was made into an animated film. But the Hobbit sucks! It is simply horrible,I think that the portrayal of the elves of Mirkwood is one of the worst drawings/animations ever to be made.
I actually like LOTR very much,I saw it at a very early age (I think I was 6 or something) and I guess that has something to do with my liking it - some people say they like the Hobbit cause they saw it at an early age and I guess all the images and characters kinda stick with you. The portrayal of the Balrog is much better than the one in PJ's movie.
