I am considering starting a petition to get Spielberg to do do a live-action version of "The Hobbit". Anyone else like the idea?

OKAY...
Just for now go to my sight and sign my guestbook. I will notify you when the petition is ready.
Don't worry I won't notify you for any other reasons EVER, and I don't do anything like sell names or **** like that.
I will also delete your name after notification...it's just easier for me that way...don't if you don't want to...I will eventually post it here as well.

I doubt seriously that New Line and Saul Zeantz would sell the rights to Spielburg...I mean, if you think that a Web Based Petition would convince them, after making so much bank off of "The Lord of the Rings", to sell the rights that they purchased, and if you believe that Dreamworks could deal with United Artists on the split for the Distribution rights...and if you want the Hobbit done like Spielburg's other stunning feature which was practically a ripoff of the Hobbit to begin with, "Willow", then yeah...knock yourself out...

And besides, weren't you just touting Spielberg as one of the handful of great directors in your personal pantheon in the movie review thread? Even if Spielberg had directed "Willow" it's not as if it such a bad movie that it would impugn all the other great work he has done in just about every movie genre imaginable, the list is too long to even go into.

Every movie director is capable of making a clunker or two...or three. In my personal opinion Speilberg's were Willow, 1941 and Hook (Not that he directed Willow...that was Ron Howard. Spielberg has just financed some bad ideas like Willow). That's the personal opinion portion of the problem...the bulk of the problem is that Saul Zaentz owns the Movie Rights to the movie, and he is a producer on "The Lord of the Rings". New Line Cinema licensed the rights to do a Hobbit movie from him right around the time they licensed the rights to do LotR, but the distribution rights are still held by United Artists, for whatever reason, and any movie of The Hobbit has to be distributed by them, which is a big part of the reason New Line didn't suggest that Jackson make it before doing LotR...Jackson has stated on several occasions that he, once he has finished LotR, would want to go back and do The Hobbit, and since he and Saul Zanex...er, Zaentz are buddies now I just don't see anyone wresting it from New Line in the not too distant future...

Again, I don't think Spielberg had any connection with "Willow", but anyway....
As you have ably presented here before, and every CCR fan already knows, Saul Zaentz is one of the most Machiavellian (sp?) bastards on this rock, and if a guy with the drawing juice of Spielberg told him he really wanted to make "The Hobbit", I think he would cut Jackson's throat in about 4.2 seconds, buddies or not, and find a way to make it happen. ("Saul Zaentz and New Line Cinema, in conjunction with $teven $pielberg and Dreamworks Studios present... yada, yada, yada"). I mean, this is SPIELBERG we're talking about here.

I always thought "Willow" was George Lucas' work.
IMHO I don't like the idea of Lucas or Spielberg doing The Hobbit. Bilbo would surely have some sort of cheap hat and a whip with Spielberg and speak Gandalf would in sentences crazily turned around with Lucas.
I don't even know if I'd like the idea of a Hobbit film by PJ. Would Ian Holm do for a hobbit about 60 years younger than in LotR?

I think Lucas wrote and/or produced "Willow".

Oh yeah! You folks are right...I had the wrong member of the "Marin Movie Mafia" in mind...Lucas, not Spielberg was the money guy. My bad...I'm deeply sorry for having gotten the two mixed up in this matter. *blush*

I would like to sign it, but then I'm afraid that they'd actually make a good movie out of it.
Then I'd have to listen to more Purist whining. ;)
Trust me kids, it's not worth it.

...I'm still trying to figure out why Warner should want to snubb Jackson and take the Hobbit out of his grasp...*shrug* It seems to me that the chances of a petition changing the minds of executives at New Line/AOL Time Warner about letting the guy who will be making them hundreds of millions of dollars by generating movies based on Tolkien's works make The Hobbit are pretty slim...
