The Guild of the Periaur is a members only guild for all TTF members between the ages of 19-29. Note: as of August 2003 the age limit has been expanded to welcome ages 15-35.

This shall be a coming of age guild, since we twenty-somethings are a strange group that are still holding onto our youthfulness, although we are faced with the harsh realities of being an adult in the "Real World".

Here twenty-somethings will find more in-depth discussion of Tolkien... Discuss concerns of our generation...and seek comfort in the company of our peers.

The rules:

1. To join the Guild, potential members must satisfy one basic requirement; must be between the ages of 19-29 (why 19?, because in my experience 19 year olds are just as mature as most 20 year olds...it will also be a training year for those who are anxious to reach their twenties) note: age limit changed to 15-35 - why? We Periaur have found that many younger members in TTF have shown great maturity for their age. We have also seen that they are eager to learn how to share in the wonderful Periaur spirit...so we Periaur are commited to training them young...So that when they enter into the real world...they can go forth with the wonderul can do spirit of the Periaur! We also have welcomed those in their early- mid 30's as we have found many are refusing to accept that they are old...and indeed they are not! So welcome all new members both young and old!

2. You must be fully committed to the preservation of the Guild and its members.

3. You must be willing to participate on a regular basis and contribute as often as possible (not withstanding work or personal commitments)for the benefit of your colleagues and the momentum of the Guild.

4. No personal attacks on fellow members.

5. This Guild is a democratic process and decisions on challenging other Guilds to open debate must be agreed by the majority.

6. All forum members (who are not signed members of the Guild of Periaur) are allowed to participate in the Guilds threads, except members only threads, which belongs exclusively to the Guild membership. This allows the Guild to field a members only team in inter-Guild debates.

(ok...if that looks familiar...than you are not mistaken. This guild is based from the Ost-in-Edhil model and I believe that our rules should be based on their model...Thank you Ancalagon for the inspiration.)

Alright. Looks like I'm the first member (besides our fearless leader) to post. Praise be the Guild.

Ancalagon

Aha, does this mean we may finally get a debate going between the good members of Ost-in-Edhil (see my sig for link) and these young upstarts?;)

Anyhoo, good to see you have finally got this up and running Elbereth, I look forward to your first challenge:)

Maedhros, could this be a home for you, from which to issue forth a challenge?

Elbereth
08-02-2002, 05:33 AM
Ancalagon, I see you are not wasting any time. We will happily challenge Ost-in-edhil....but in due time dear boy!

We need time to get this guild up and going. You've had over a month and half head start. Give us time, we'll give you a good challenge that is for sure. ;)

Maedhros

Maedhros, could this be a home for you, from which to issue forth a challenge?
Yes, I'm a member here.

There will definitely be a challenge in the future.
The only individual right now that I want to challenge, will not accept it and alas that person is not in your guild. Woe is me. :(

Woo-hoo, I'm in. Has there been a campaign East of the Pond yet? IIRC, Tookish was at least 19, and headed into the general vicinity of Elbereth. Perhaps you could kidnap her, thusly forcing Merry, Legolam, and Legoman to likewise join our Glorious Guild. Also, our friend Camille from down South-away seems to be in the proper age range. Anyone else I've neglected? And soon we'll be on to thumping the full-olds!

Mormegil

Wahoo, at 19 I can just sneak into this guild. And I am mature, yet scared of becoming twenty in march. It seems like my childhood has rushed away, and now I have to deal with grown up things.

So I'll join this guild and help in the challenge of defeating the 'oldies' of Ost-in-Edhil.:)

Elbereth
08-03-2002, 05:25 AM
Yes, I agree a campaign is in order. The British army is the first on my lists...but our force must reach out further. Aragil, I elect you as head of the campaign commitee. Let's try to set a goal of at least 10 new members before the end of next weekend.

(PS...Unfortunately tookish is out of commision until later in the month...but I will definately try to get her to join when she logs on.)

I will add you to the members list Kat. And please don't be shy! We here in the Guild of the Periaur are all friendly and approachable... and the same applies to the rest of TTF.

Can I join? I have the illustrious birthday of 8/1/83 (making me 19 for you non-mathematics!). Just let me know your joining up ritual and I will partake of it.

Since I dropped into this life on 13-06-1980 AD, I suppose for the coming seven years I meet the requirements for joining this guild. But does the guild think so?:)

Legolam and DGoeji make yourselves at home!

Since my posts are spread all over the Forum, I guess my signature will do the advertising just fine.

We are the proud Youth of the World, the Periaur have the future!

S'cuse me. I got carried away. Oh, and sorry for being late, I was away on vacation. One of the important things in the life of a true Periaur.:D

DGoeij

I did not wanted to create an entire new thread about it, but I do wish to focus the attention of all the Tweens on This Thread (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5690&perpage=15&pagenumber=1), because it is something I find highly important. It is about giving us members somewhat more to say on this forum. That should appeal to any Periaur.:D

Doh! The Tweens, that would have been a good Guild name as well. Wish I'd thought of that (or Dgoeij had spoken up) earlier. Welcome new members!

ps Legolam- if anyone asks, you checked out the Guild Page because of my tireless campaign to bring in members of the B.A. winkwink

Nah, Tweens works better as a nickname, I really like the official-sounding Periaur. Makes me feel like a grown up.:D And to keep the younger part of our spirit alive, we can yell Tweens Tweens Tweens! from time to time.

Legolam
08-15-2002, 02:28 PM
I will do that, just for you Aragil! ;)

This is a great idea for a guild. We can be as childish or as adult as we like - and there are no proper grown ups to tell us to shut up!!! :D

Is there any way I could join? I'm only 16, but I think I'm mature;) and I would like to participate in some inter-guild debates. I joined the scholar's guild, but they aren't debating much.

Elbereth
08-20-2002, 05:02 AM
Elfarmari...I hate to be mean but I can't let you join until you are at least 19....I'm sorry. :(

As for debates in the Guild of Scholars ...that is definately possible...if you would like to propose a debate there...please feel free. I must appologize for not being more active in that thread...but my this has been a very busy summer.

PS...Elfarmari...perhaps if you are so inclined...you could organize a guild for your age group. Then you could challange the old foogies and the tweens in a battle of the minds. ;)

Buenas Dias (or something),

recetnly turned 19 is all you need to become a Periaur.

Question to our Guild leaders:
Is this Guild going to be one of the official debating guilds? If so, it would be a problem for me becoming member of the Guild of Tolkienologists. Or maybe I can work something out with both the Guild leaders?

Elbereth
09-04-2002, 06:54 PM
Yes DGoeij, the Periaur is currently an official debate guild...if the members choose to debate that is. However, if everyone who likes to debate continues to leave this guild for the Tolkienologists...then the Periaur will not debate. (Apparently the Tolkienologist have a rule that if you join their guild you can not be a member of another guild...or at least that is what I've been told.)

I am personally very perturbed by everyone leaving this guild for the purpose of joining the Tolkienologist. I am especially angry that many of the members who originally pursuaded me to begin this guild are the same members who have been the first to leave it. However, if all you debators out there want to debate...and do not feel that the Periaur allow you the opportunity to do that...go ahead leave. The Periaur does not need to participate in the debates.

Don't get me wrong here, I do not wish to participate in any 'arranged' debate as member of either the Periaur or Tolkienologists. I feel more like a Periaur anyway, and prefer to stay a member of this Guild. I'm a Tween and proud of it!:D

I guess I have to inform Grond that I will pop into 'his' Guild now and then to see what's up and leave it at that.

I can live with people taking shots at me. It's not the first time it happened and it will not be the last. But if you see clearly, I left the guild because I couldn't live with the idea of being in a place were there is an age restriction. I left the guild before Grond took control of the Guild of Tolkienology. You can check the date of the posts.

The Periaur does not need to participate in the debates.I just wanted to insert my two bits here. I have not in any way recruited people from your guild. The Guild of Tolkienology will be first and foremost, a debating guild and as such, cannot have members belonging to another debating guild. It creates an inherent conflict of interest.

I have not and will not advocate people leaving this guild for any other. I will not turn new members away either. If a Peraiur or a Ost-in-Edhil or any other debating guild member asks to join the Tolkienology guild, I instruct them to choose which one they want to be a member of. We do have a rule against multiple debate guild memberships.

Having said that, I want to invite all the members of the Peraiur and all other guilds, debating and non-debating, to visit our Guild Forum to discuss topics that will be posted there. Our forum will be geared towards research into Tolkien's work and will have (I hope) some real teaser topics.

I meant no disrespect of any guild when I took over the Tolkienologist guild and I certainly wasn't going in hoping to steal any other guild's membership. Hope this explains my position and will heal any wounds that may have been inflicted.

You're absolutely right Legoman. We tweens need to get our acts together and start building up this community.

Although I am not terribly surprised by the lack of participation. We tweens are busy people. Prone to going out late at night...working busy long ours to prove ourselves in our jobs and school.

But let's stop making excuses and start making this a great guild!

Talk about a long list of impossiblities for any gathering of Tweens:
-Invest time
-Invest money (time=money you know)
-Have sensible ideas
-Do something sensible with a sensible idea
-Listen to your fellow Tweens, who might have a sensible idea
-Stick to the subject, How about a beer?

OK, first of all, raise you left eyebow whilst trying to pull a 'james bond expression' intended to make you look suave.
then say in a very english proud accent.

'I look silly.'

Wonko The Sane
10-17-2002, 07:31 PM
You're lucky this is a message board...in real life my eyebrows REFUSE to move independently of one another!

legoman
10-18-2002, 07:40 PM
that'll do nicely, it kinda wrecks it a bit if you can move your eyebrow, I tend to half raise one, half unraise (huh??) the other and tip my head slightly so one looks even higher, it looks funny and I can do my superhero voice:

'I do maths!'

I'd like to point out that that was because tookish decided if I was a superhero my special power would be algebra. Great for stopping the evils in the universe!!!

I remember in my FAVE computer game, "Monkey Island" there's a toy doll of the EVIL UNDED PIRATE VILLIAN character and it has him saying all sorts of random phrases.
He says for example in this order:

You're my very best friend!

Argh! Math be hard, let's go shopping!

I'll rip your eyeballs out and plant daisies in your sockets! Hoho!

Your comment reminded me of the math thing he said. :)

10-20-2002, 11:46 AM
Actually Snaga...the term "Tween" was a Periaur invention...something we all came up with to identify ourselves...something less formal...because let's face it....we're too young to start getting serious about everything. We'll leave the serious stuff to Ost en group.

But hey...if you would like to think of Tweens as Hobbits who have not come of age...by all means...please do. I would hate to limit your imagination.

Tweens are the best!!! *dances about in a hyper-I haven't slept in 24 hours and I'm on an adrenaline high dance*

:D :p :D

Snaga
10-20-2002, 08:56 PM
Hmmm I see I need to post a serious Tolkien post. That will get the mods jaws dropping;)

From Ch1. 'A Long Expected Party' (FOTR)
At that time Frodo was still in his tweens, as hobbits call the irresponsible twenties between childhood and coming of age at thirty-three.
Thus not a Periaur invention or my imagination either... Just pure JRRT!:)

* Joins in the crazed dance of the tweens, just to get the seriousness of this post out of his system *:D:D:D

Thanks for your astute and informative observation, Snaga! Very nice!!!

I must appologize for my ignorance. I seem to have forgotten that verse in the story, (especially since I have not read LOTR completely for nearly 10 months.) I appreciate your contribution to our lovely guild!

You are most welcome, oh dancing guild leader! My thing is, I qualify as a tween in hobbit terms, but not in guild terms.:(

But I don't want to join the old-timers guild. They're all a bit serious ... shhhh you didnt hear me say it... but your guild is more fun and interesting!;)

I havent read LotR for a while, but I am going to take some time out soon to do so. I think I forgot some of the words on p232;)

Ok...fine. I'll talk about the Periaurs.

*Still hiding under the table but no longer smiling*

I have a question about the real Hobbit-folks. Who was oldest and who was youngest of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin? And which ones were "tweens" and which ones were "adult"?

Elbereth
10-24-2002, 11:51 PM
Well that is easy...Pippen is the youngest and Frodo is the oldest. Now I know that Pippen was 28 when he started the journey. Therefore, that would make him a Tween. Sam had just become of age. And I have forgotten how old Merry and Frodo were. I think I recall the book mentioning that Frodo was in his 60's when he went on the journey. I guess I could look it up...but well...I'm on vacation, so I won't! :p

Wonko The Sane
10-24-2002, 11:56 PM
Pippen was 28?! Wow...that's REALLY young for a hobbit!

Hi guys,

maybe it would be a good idea to create a 'get to know your fellow Periaur' thread, and have these kind of conversations over there.
This thread should remain exlusively to members willing to join this Guild and others welcoming them, IMHO.;)

Or in Tween language: Hey you two, get a room! (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6950):D

I have a question to present to all of you. I have a few people in mind who I would like to send special invitations to join the Periaurs who are not within the proper age limit.

Would you be willing to accept them into the guild, regardless of age...or should we just keep membership as is?

PS...there will be no German kicking in the Periaurs...Germans are my friends ;)

Wonko The Sane
11-15-2002, 08:05 PM
Depends on who they are... ;)

Nah! We let Snaga join...why not let others join too.

Arcanjo is Arch Angel, that character from the X-Men. If you remember him, you'll know he was gifted with wings and the ability to fly, and he was also spoiled rich, a playboy. Arcanjo is thus a Playboy with wings.

And I rock because I say so. ;)

I think we should let anyone in who feels tweenish, but only if they can answer these questions three...

*this is where elb as guild leader adds some questions to be added as a rigorous test to see if the so called tweens are in fact tweens at heart*

No way, I worked hard for 20 years to deserve the priviledge of posting here, I don't want it to become spoiled and crowded!

Wonko The Sane
12-02-2002, 08:58 PM
Hmmm...I don't think we should make and requirements for joining...
Because really us real Tweens didn't do much to get to be Tweens...

And anyway, we can live under the guise of the Periaur, but really we're just a guild of crazy people and anyone can join.

Why change that!

Arcanjo, your post reminds me of a quote by Byron:

"Through life's road, so dim and dirty,
I have dragged to three and thirty;
What have these years left to me?
Nothing, except thirty-three"

See..it's like...you've really done nothing to get to be the age you're at...you know? Anyway...yeah...no more quoting Bryon for Wonks here.

Snaga
12-02-2002, 09:11 PM
Arcanjo obviously qualifies on age alone. So the 'questions three' don't apply. It could be fun to think of the questions... but they would have to be good.:)

Yay Byron! 'Mad, bad and dangerous to know!' - an obvious tween.:D

Wonko The Sane
12-02-2002, 10:14 PM
He was a Tween till the day he died!! (And he died at 36) He was a REAL Playboy. Arcanjo would have a lot to learn from him!
;)

But I might be revealed to be the greatest English-Tool of all time if we continue this line of discussion, so shall we move on?

Ramagna
12-03-2002, 10:30 AM
So I still don't know what to tell Carantalath...
May I tell her she can join? What's with Elbereth's opinion?

Elbereth
12-04-2002, 08:42 PM
Sorry I haven't responded in awhile. Aside from being terribly busy at work, I'm also battling a terrible cold...so please bear with me.

Ramagna, yes Carantalath may join. I do appreciate that you ask my permission first...because I would hate this place to get over crowded with non-tween folk.

As for the questions three...I like the idea. It is very Tolkien-like. It reminds me of the riddle contest between Bilbo and Gollum.

Perhaps we can create a riddle thread where in order to become an honorary tween, one must correctly answer a riddle that is created by a committee of official tween riddlemasters. If you like the idea, we can pull together the committee and those in the commitee will serve as the membership council for the guild. (I hope that made sense...my mind is a bit cloudy right now due to the cold medication.)
Anyway, let me know if you like the idea. :)

Wonko The Sane
12-04-2002, 08:45 PM

I am a devoted member of the Dark Legion, but will have vertical relationships ()....I mean, try to be here and be funny and talk about stuff and all.....within this Guild! I wont be a spy for them, basically. They're into war and stuff.
OK?

Crickey, that was like an official request, he sounds far too serious to fit in here...

ask him to be more silly and then let elbereth consider him!!

It's ok GreyPilgrim...Snaga and I are members here as well as the Dark Legion and stuff.

I'm also in the Guild of Elves and the Guild of Outcasts.

See...you can join more than one. :)

I say welcome! But I don't have that authority. :)

greypilgrim
02-21-2003, 07:54 AM
Whoa!

SERIOUS?? You've got to be kidding!
OK, maybe I am serious always. But almost everything is funny to me.:D Maybe thats why I'm a Fool.;)

Anyways, Guilding is fun, yah? The Dark Legion is where Greypilgrim is at, when I feel evil. But the Outcasts for when things are funny. OK, so now I'm talking to people from my generation. Hmm. Cool! Want funny? OK.

1. How do you post a pic on here? Don't have a camera yet, of course.
2. I type alot.

What else is there to do in here? Rise to power in the ranks, or something? Battle against other Guilds? Ok. But I'm new to all this, and yall gotta help me. OK, Wonko, fellow DL member?
I can do good things too! Whatever, OK?

Wanna run around and scare the Periaur with our good yet simultaneously evil deeds?

It is not a term with which you should play!

Sure we can team up. *looks sidelong at legoman*.
Yah, so about the pics, that looks very fun and all. I've seen some of the people here. I gotta get a pic and put it on here, I'm going as Gandalf to the ROTK movie, the midnight show, and want want yall to see it, thats all!
OK, so what else, how do you "build up some Guild? Is it Recruiting?? Fighting? Magic? Drinking??
I like all of that!
This Guild is for a generation of People, who like Tolkien. So what else is there? Music threads should go in bars, I think. Lets start a Nightclub, or a Racetrack or something!:D That would be funny.
I'll do whatever, but not in this thread much anymore!!!!

You're goin to have to change that signature at the end of your post, otherwise some off the lesser brained people may get confused.....;)

TheFool is another member of this Guild, so if you say "Greypilgrim, The Fool", you are sort of calling your self two people, or something....
I don't know anymore- I just confused myself right there.

greypilgrim
02-22-2003, 05:59 AM
Greypilgrim, is greypilgrim! The Fool, is Greypilgrim too. Greypilgrim is a Fool. Now, so are you, Pippin_Took!

Aulë
02-22-2003, 06:07 AM
So Greypilgrim is TheFool?
I thought multiple accounts weren't allowed here...

Wonko The Sane
02-22-2003, 11:34 AM
No...TheFool is not greypilgrim.

Greypilgrim is merely a fool and likes to describe himself as one.

TheFool is different.

Aulë
02-22-2003, 11:48 AM
So you're saying that TheFool isn't The Fool, yet GreyPilgrim is The Fool?
But Grey Pilgrim isn't TheFool, therefore there is no multiple account?
 ;)

Wonko The Sane

There's no multiple account...that was ALL I understood from that.

And when I first signed up for this I thought if I used my real initials in me username, PJ, it would be too confusing! *slaps own forehead*

Thanks all!

Thanks Fool! *bump*
By the way, all, I am only one person, The Fool is another!
Here's a poem about us both.....

"A lord of wisdom throned he sat,
swift in anger, quick to laugh;
an old man in a battered hat
who leaned upon a thorny staff."

The Fool IS NOT Greypilgrim, and neither am I really..but Greypilgrim was called the Fool, by some, and vice-versa!
Think about it!;) It really does make sense, kinof!
I'll be the Grey Fool, Greypilgrim, OK?

I can't sing, but we can see what happens there! (Limlight Lounge!)

And the equation (2+2=5), which was my former siggy, is actually an impossible dream! I really wanted it to equal 5, though, so I thought I'd look for some ideas! None so far......I'll keep you posted!

Anyway, I'm back from yet another business trip and ready to take control of the guild again. Sorry for neglecting you guys for so long.

Well, we consider everyone between 19 and 29 years old to be of the proper age to become a Periaur. And like the young people we are, we do not even hold on too tightly to our very own rules. I'm pretty sure we have some members outside the age boundaries. Personally, I'd say welcome to the Guild. And I'm pretty sure our Guild Queen will accept you too, Master Sword.;)

Ok, now that we have established that 18 is the legal drinking age in the UK and that Legolam is not an alcoholic, but a social drinker, I would like to move on.

Welcome The_Swordmaster to the Guild of Periaurs. I'm sure you will fit right in!

I would also like to get a report from Pippen about the progress of the debates...What happened?

But if you're after sports no-one knows and is dentirely different you wanna look up octopush cos Its the best game in the world and I can't find anywhere that plays it! I saw it on activ8 years ago its brilliant!!!

03-14-2003, 03:27 AM
Legoman, I think you are referring to a "medicine ball", what athletes use to build their upper-body strength.
Handball, I don't know. But I like "dodge-ball"...a favorite pasttime. Try not to get hit, try to hit anyone you can!

legoman
03-21-2003, 06:09 PM
medecine ball??? Nah, It wasn't that! what ever it is. I do know handball, it is a contact sport, its supposed to be rather violent, but I've played very violent sports before, fouling football being the worst, so its hard to degree how violent it is having not played it myself.

but dodge ball, now you're talking!!!

Anyone played bombardment?? thats fun!
