is'nt it interesting (and im sure that my thoughts are not original here but..) that since i was a new member i discovered that not everyone who comes here was interested about LotR before the movie. Also, there are so many reading clubs that i find it funny that not everyone has read these books and now i don't feel so much like an amature. you dont have to know how to speak evlish or anything like that. Which is pretty cool. i myself have only read the hobbit which i found to be very descriptive and adveturous i was postponing reading the fellowship of the ring for fear that i might be dissapionted when i saw the movie and didn't want to ruin the movie.
anywho, this is getting too long, just wanted to share my thoughts to you.

The reading rings are not for first time readers only. Most of the participants have read the Hobbit several times.
But, anyways, welcome to the forum, though this thread may fit better under New Members, depending on your intent.
Noooo!!!! I have a friend who is doing the same thing you are doing. Dont wait to read the books, they only make you appreciate the movie more. And, the books are much better, regardless!;)

That's funny, I've been telling folks just the opposite, "If you read the books before seeing the movies then you won't enjoy the movies as much.". I suppose it really all depends upon the Reader/Movie Goer...

i am going to have to disagree with you on that one ReadWryt. i think that if one reads the books before seeing the movies then one might have a better sense of what is, at that time, going on. but as it may be that is just my opinion and you are entitled to your own. and i think that Sting might agree with me on this one.

Personally I do feel that I appreciated the movie more after reading the books. The substance of the movie is hard for some of my friends to comprehend, so they pass it off as being stupid. A reader of the books on the other hand, can sit back and enjoy PJ's work. It isnt perfect, but it sure as heck is better than that piece of **** cartoon, which also made me appreciate PJ's movie even more.

well i personally liked seeing the movie first. there are so many parts that had me so nervous. i soon ran outta fingernails. LOL. it was easier for me to understand the book, having seen the movie an' all. if i would've tried to read the book first i would've been totally lost. and by seeing the movie first i have not become a PJ basher. LOL. which in my opinion is a good thing.

I actually saw the movie before I read any of Tolkien's books. The movie sparked my interest...but the book made me a fan of Tolkien's world. Since then I have read all the books except the Middle Earth series written by Christopher Tolkien. ( I think I will save those until after I see The Twin Towers.)
I personally prefer to watch the movie first before I read the book. This applies to any story that has been recreated into a movie. I believe that reading the book first, ruins your enjoyment of the movie...because ultimately any movie based on a book is not going to follow the story exactly. So I am glad I did not read Tolkien's books until now...because I am able to appreciated both movie and books.

thank you for responding to this, you have all helped me to make up my mind, i think that i will go with my original desire and wait to read the twin towers until after i see the movie. the movie helps me to visualize and comprehend what is going on. Confusticated was right, it is all about whether you enjoy movies better than books. if lotr was just any old plain movie and so much effort and time was'nt put into it, i would read the books first, but seeing as the movie was done very well, i believe that i will wait to read the books. i will love to be able to have a visual reference for the books and remember all the beautiful and horrible things that i saw in the movie, it helps me gain perspective while reading the books. but, if it makes any of you feel better, i will reread there and back again and read the fellowship of the ring whil waiting for the twin towers to come out.:)

Books are always better than movies...no matter what... I think anyway. That way you can picture the characters however you want, and in movies, it is harder to understand how much time passes, and like in FotR, it is hard to tell how far they actually travel.
