View Full Version : How will they end the Return of the King?

I was pondering on this little idea the other day and wanted to read some oppinions on it. How do you think that PJ is going to end the third movie in the trilogy?

Will he end it the way it ends in the movie with Sam coming home after Frodo leaves the Grey Havens? Or do you think that they will end it at the Grey Havens? Perhaps they will end it by incorporating some of the information that Tolkien gave us in the Appendix. Or perhaps they will end the movie in a totally unexpected and different way.

Go ahead and give me your ideas!

I've mentioned before that the fact that there is a credit for "Elanor Gamgee" leads me to hope that perhaps they might end it in some way resembling the Epilogue that Tolkien had forever after regretted leaving out of the book, with Sam reading from the Red Book to his children, perhaps not ALL of the Epilogue, with the reading of the letter from Aragorn, but at least enough of a hint of it to entice people to read either "The End of the Third Age" or "Sauron Defeated" from the "History of Middle-earth" series...

They'll probably end it with Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf's ship sailing off to Valinor, while Merry, Pippen, and Sam stand there watching them go.

:( *sniff*

I know this will not happen, But I wish there could be some way to end it by putting alot of the Apendix in. Like sam sailing from the grey havens and Legolas and Gimli going off together
maybe even Arwen going back and dieing in loth lorien

But to be honest, I think they will end it the way the book ends. With Sam coming home and everything being as it should. Tolkien would have liked it hat way.

I thought I heard a rumour that they are going to miss out the scouring of the shire?

Is that confirmed? Or is it still just speculation?

I have absolutely no idea how they are going to end it after I heard about the "Scouring of the Shire" being cut out (grr... I can't seem to get over that) :( but I would like to see it end with Frodo leaving The Shire and sailing to Valinor.

<just a romour> I think it'll be Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin going back to the Shire and it's either gonna be ruinned or the same

It seems to me that the ship sailing is an ending just made for Hollywood and I can't really see them using anything else. Regardless of the scouring being taken out, I still think that Tolkien provided a really memorable ending to be translated to film - something that would really make the whole trilogy, and I don't think PJ is stupid enough to waste that.

I hate that they left out the scouring of the shire. I love that part! And it's so good for the hobbit characters, especially Pippin and Merry. At least I have a year and a half to accustom myself to the idea - perhaps by then I'll be over it.

I will hate Peter Jackson if the scouring is left out. How will he fill in the big gap in his time alotment? By making up more stupid Aragorn-Arwen nonsense? That aid, I'm not withou sympathy - its not very Hollywood is it?

Arwen is so annoying. The love scene in Rivendell was fine, but I'm finding her saving frodo more and more rediculous. It's just so weird to watch an elf cry over a hobbit she doesn't even know.

I have heard from numerous sources over a year ago that the Scouring of the Shire was going to be left out. What happens to Saruman I do not know. I suspect he is killed in RotK (hopefully he won't make an appearance at Pelennor). I don't think PJ has committed his worst sin by leaving out the Scouring, because non-Tolkien readers would deem it unnecessary. My guess would be that RotK ends with, as someone already said, the scene from the Grey Havens. Seeing the end of FotR, I am all the more certain. It seems more final, and well, more PJ. I agree about Arwen saving Frodo being ridiculous. They should have brought in Glorfindel. And I certainly hope that Arwen, the Elves of Lorien and the Dunedain of Gondor are not featured at Helm's Deep. With that I bring my ranting and raving to a close.

Just felt like saying something good for PJ. I loved the movie and have complete trust in him that he will make the end of RotK great - at least he's shown so far that he's quite capable of it. I believe that the next movies will be wonderful - just like the first one.

Not that I'm doubting your credentials (seriously), but where do people hear things like this? Have read the script or do you know people on the inside or ar the producers just careless in interviews?

HAHAHAhahahaha.....

It's great when someone pokes a fat stick in these incredibly dumb rumours PJ critics like to make. Like I say, if you are going to make up rumours then at least make them entertaining.

Impailed, eh? I'm trying unsuccessfully to picture the expression on his face when that happens. I can see how Glorfindel would be character overload for non-readers. Maybe they could have let Legolas take his place. That way, the only rather inexplicable member of the fellowship would be Gimli. But actually Arwen would have been fine if she had just given frodo her horse and he crossed the river himself.

if you've been to LOTR.net you've prob seen the pics of sam and elanor, who was played by sean astin's daughter, and elanor runs up and gives sam a big hug. so i think its gonna be ending the way it does in the book. and sam will be at the grey havens and they will show all the grey havens and then show the end scene where sam greets rosie and elanor and sits down with elanor on his lap and says "well, im back" and the end.

I agree, Sam_Gamgee, I think we'll end with Rosie giving Sam a cup of tea as he settles by the fire and starts to tell his little daughter about the entire adventure and we see the Red Book there by his side.

I do hope we see the Grey Havens. It's too bad we'll miss Legolas and Gimli sailing off into the West.

There's some wonderful moments in the book when the triumphant party is riding north from Rohan and Gandalf and the remaining Elves just sit silently, talking mind to mind. I wonder if we'll see that. Probably not.

The scouring of the shire is perhaps one of the most overlooked sections in the book. It is in this part that we see the way that Merry and Pippin have grown. Their characters develop considerably during the course of the saga but this is best shown by the way they conduct themselves in the shire. Therefore, by cutting this section out, pj will be doing Merry and Pippin a great injustice.

Patiently waits for some purist to come in here and make some wise-ass remark regarding that last sentence

Ariana Undomiel

Would't it be a neat spin to end the movie with Sam and Merry and Pippin tearfully watching Frodo leave Middle Earth on the grey ship and just before it goes out of sight show a light shine from the ship, Frodo's star glass. Then it could show Sam give a slow and understanding smile and wave his hand goodbye. Then you could have Bilbo's last song come floating out over the speakers. Ahhhhh .... That might be too sad though.

I will have to think of something really cool. Hmmmmm ....

aw, I love 'the scouring of the shire'. pity they're cutting it. let's hope that frodo even goes to The Grey Havens, if PJ made him stay at the Shire it would be the biggest disgrace of motion pictures ever...

I've not been spending much time here and just learned about the scouring being left out. I'm really bummed now.

I speculate they will end with the ship sailing away. I'm actually holding onto a dream I have that they or someone will use it as a springboard to a follow up based on The Silmarilion. Wouldn't it be neat if Frodo asks Gandalf about the history of ME and Gandalf goes into tales from The Sil. If not a movie it would make for a great mini series. And you know once the revenues start to decline after the 3 movies are out, something will come along. Probably The Hobbit but I hope someone does something based on The Sil.

I think missing out Scouring of the Shire is not good. IMO, it is an important part, seeing the transforming of Marry and Pippin.

I believe RotK.. should show growth in M & P as well!

I heard something very interesting on the DVD audio comments: apparently they are going to end ROTK with an epilogue, spoken by Galadriel, just as they started with a prologue. Could be very nice, if they do it right.

During the commentary with the writers/director. I think it's Phillipa Boyens who lets it slip that RotK will end with Galadriel speaking, just as FotR began. Don't remember which part of the movie it's mentioned during unfortunately.

Personally, I like this idea. It gives me hope that much of the end of the book will actually make it to the movie in an abbreviated form. The Scouring is very important in showing how far the characters have come, and how they've developed over the course of the story. I hope that character development is made evident, with or without the Scouring. My guess is we'll see Arwen and Aragorn getting married, then Galadriel's voice will summise what happens to everyone after that.

What a great ending this would make:

A ship sailing into the horizon and once it goes out of view the word "The End" fade into the screen...

Well it was during the commentary track, so it'll be on either disk 1 or 2. Wish I could remember which exact part. Must have been during a Galadriel scene though.

I believe it was in the beginning, when they were talking about the prologue, they said that there would be an epilogue as well. But maybe it was later, because they talked about the prologue several times.
PJ said very claarly that the Scouring of the Shire would NOT be in it, and he seemed to think that the images Frodo sees in the mirror were enough reference to it. I don't agree with that, and I sure hope they will show the character's development in some other way. I can hardly believe they would completey have misunderstood the importance of that in the story.

Put in either disc 1 or 2, those being the discs the movie is on. Then go to special features, and choose the director/writer commentary track. It's during the early parts of the film. I think it's also said on the cast commentary track as well.
