View Full Version : Error in DVD

I was wondering if anyone else who got the LotR DVD noticed what I did, or if it's just my copy that is messed up.

During the scene in Lothlorien when the leader of the elf party confronted the fellowship, he said "A dwarf breathes so loud we could have shot him in the dark."

In the DVD during that same scene, all he says is "so loud we could have shot him in the dark."

this threw me for a major loop, since I saw the movie ten times in theatres and thereby knew all of the dialogue...

And if this isn't just a problem with my DVD, is there anyway to get in contact with someone about it?

Contact New Line Cinema and give them an ear full. While you have them on the phone, be sure to remind them of all of the stuff they took out from the book and all of the extra stuff they added to the movie.

what the hell is wrong with that? Its a **** long movie and a lot of extra footage. They needed to cut time here and there. So they cut out 3 words? Who gives a ****?

If they didn't add in extra footage, they wouldn't need to take anything out.

Why would they feel the need to cut time for the DVD if it was in the theatre release? That makes no sense.
Then the fact that taking out those wods would only save like two seconds...it has to be some kind of error.

anyone seen both the full screen and wide screen? is the error in both?

It is indeed the theatrical release... I saw no extra scenes in my dvd, believe you me, i would have noticed. and that line was one of my favorites so of course I care. If they are releasing a movie to dvd, they release that which was in the movie in theatres.

So New Line Cinema, hunh? .... must go find website and complain! raaaaawr!!!!

The fullscreen version could be the issue.

I have the widescreen and it says the whole line (starting with "the dwarf").

Here's what I noticed: During the line, Haldir's voice is panning from right front to center. The words "the dwarf" are in the right, the word "breathes" is in between right and center, and the rest is in the center.

I tried using the Dolby 2.0 track instead of the 5.1 track - same deal. I tried the 2.0 track in stereo rather than surround - same deal (except the panning works a little differently with no center of course). I also tried 5.1 with the center off - same deal.

Then I tried it with my other DVD player - a cheap one. On this player I get a short pause at every new chapter - very annoying. But Haldir's line was complete in every configuration.

So, this could either be on the fullscreen version, or for some very strange reason maybe you are using only a center channel with no left or right (or only no right at least).

and if you got the Full Screen version you deserve
to have some dialouge cut!

friends, it's so easy to nit pick... The work that went
in to making these movies a reality was simply
AMAZING. Remember it's a MOVIE not the BOOK.

I respect the movie for what it is, and i think they did
an excellent job.

If you walk in to a movie and expect it to be a literal
translation of a book the magnitude of LOTR than you
are only setting yourself up for a big fall.

About that fullscreen version - did you guys realize that while you miss a lot on the sides you actually see a little more on the top and bottom? LOTR was shot in Super 35. I can't remember what aspect ratio this is exactly (maybe 1.85:1) but it's not 2.35:1 like the movie was shown theaterically. They actually took the filmed product and matted a little out of the top and bottom. So the fullscreen version is the filmed product without the top & bottom mattes but with the sides cropped out. I'm kindof surprised they bothered to do the effects for the whole frame and not just the 2.35:1 area. I'd still recommend the widescreen over the fullscreen by a long shot. The additional stuff you see with the fullscreen is not very interesting to the additional stuff you see on the widescreen.

One of the reviews showed comparative pictures between the versions but I can't find it now...

So it's not the fullscreen...#1 - did you really mean that on both your's and your friend's copy, you don't hear the words "the dwarf breathes" or that you do hear them? I'm wondering if it's just Shiari with this problem...

Mine is widescreen... and considering my luck... I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was just my copy that got messed up.

CD's and DVD's seem to hate me, even though I treat them so well it could almost be called worship.... *sigh*

Im whith you moe, people shouldnt care this much about a stupid line that isnt hearable. If you whach the 3 "Making of" in the second dvd you will see how little that matters and how much effort was actually made to make this masterpiece.

Oh and if your wondering, i do hear "the dwarf". I think its probably some error which affected probably some of the DVD's of the movie sold and was then not erased beacuse obviosly it would cost to much to rewrite every one of them, so they just followed the next set of Dvd's whith that corrected.

And really dont go complaining to New Line for this stupid incident, it is not worth it.

I DO respect this movie... a great deal, in fact.

Why else would i spend $100 dollars watching it in theatres?

the reason why I wish that line is there is that:

1) it's funny as hell
2) it makes the scene really choppy
3) I want to be able to sit real close to my tv, turn all the lights off, and pretend I'm back in the theatres.

I don't think a better job could have been done on these movies.

And Locke, that's why I asked this question, to find out if it was just some, or if it was all. If everyone had this problem, then complaining would be warranted... but if it's just one shipment then it's no big deal.
I'm going to also get the extended version anyways, so it truly doesn't bother me that much.

Actually, if the sound in your movie isn't working and it's the DVD's problem then you should by all means complain to New Line, or whatever be the company producing the DVD. Don't say it's not worth it, it's for New Lines own good that they know some of the DVD's they released aren't working properly (supposedly). And you never know, maybe they'll spend $20 on you and ship you a new version that you can give to friends.

Shiari - I'd suggest trying your disc out on another dvd player if possible. Then you will know if it's your setup or the disc itself. If it's the disc, you are entitled to return/exchange it.

If it's just your copy Shiari, return it to the store you bought and exchange it for a new one.
