This is what I did.

My tv has a vcr built into it. My playstation2 is hooked up to it. I rented the dvd, and played it, and simply popped in a video tape and recorded it. It comes out GREAT!! - the background sound has a little hiss - but its not a problem.

I was surprised that dvd's were able to be copied this way - coz I know officially released video tapes can't be copied using two vcr's.

Anyway, just thought I'd share - save anyone buying this dvd or renting repeatedly untill the REAL thing comes out in Novemebr.

How exactly did you hook everything up and do the actual recording? I would like to try this with my friend sometime...

Yes...I believe the PS2 has no Macrovision so that would work.

But remember that this is in fact illegal, and is copyright theft.

Once the playstation is tuned into the tv - thats it! - nothing major to be hooked up or anything. Play the dvd, put in a tape while its playing and record!

Wow.

As much as I love this film, for some odd reason I do NOT feel guilty burning/pirating the theatrical release. This is pure marketing evil and everyone knows it. But don't you worry, even I will fall into New Lines trap. What can I say, I love the movie.

Of course I'm taping from a tv with a built-in vcr - so if you're going to do it with a normal set-up - you will need your vcr and dvd hooked up to the tv at the same time - should still work though - vcr tapes whatever is on the screen.

psx2 has no macrovision???? thats got to be news to me!!!

the set up above has got to work coz of the wiring of the all-in-one TV/VCR setup..i cant see a separate TV/VCR setup to work...macrovision is so tight i cant even get my Hollywood plus card to output to TV....it plays on winDVD though.

(found a way to output to TV via H+ nevetherless ;) )

Sony is ramming up their copyprotection, so dont u bet that the psx2 does NOT have macrovision. ask any Never Winter Night player about sony's securom on their games

I don't know...but my friend had a PS2 hooked up through a VCR, with the VCR connected to the TV, and he would play DVD's on the PS2. I actually hooked it up for him that way so I'm sure that was the wiring, though I never personally saw a DVD played on there.

Somebody with a PS2, please try this and let us know (in the interest of knowledge, not piracy of course).

well you have no problems playing DVD thru the VCR to the TV..thats never the problem!!

the problem is when u try recording to VCR...the guy above was lucky to have got only hissing background noise....it could have been b&w video with no sound, or just grainy TV tuner thingie :D

Nawww...you can't even typically play a dvd when the player is run through a VCR.

The picture is IMMACULATE!!!! - the sound? - a very minor hiss - but WHAT A DISCOVERY!!!!!!!!!

I actually discovered it first day when I bought the PS2. Rented Tomb Raider, and out of curiousity stuck in a tape, and I couldn't believe it copied! Didn't keep TR on tape coz it sucked!!! - I'll keep LOTR though 'till the Nov. version comes out. And then I might just buy a 4 hour tape and copy that too!

I can't believe you have 353 posts here and you asked that question. The Nov. version has an extra 1/2 hour added onto the movie.

30 extra minutes in the movie, 4 commentary tracks, DTS (if you're into that), and 2 discs full of totally new documentaries...but most importantly, 30 extra minutes! (did I mention the extra 30 minutes?).

check out this thread for a description of the new scenes (as much as is known):

There's also the 3 minute preview of the November edition on the Theaterical DVD.
