If you had the ability to add one thing back into the movie from the book what would it be? Let me hear what it would be. I personally would have added a lot more of the scenes from Loth Lorien. Either that or I would have put the scene in where the hobbits meet with the elves in the Shire who are on their way to the Grey Havens.

My vote for 'Other' would have been to add the 'Conspiracy Unmasked' maybe all the way through to Crick Hollow. Including Pippin going along as the third companion, and then meeting Merry on the way to the Ferry.

(My second chice would have been meeting the Elves in the woods of the Shire if there had been time enough to add it.)

The Barrowight scene would have interesting to see, though I can understand how Jackson wasn't able to fit it in, with Bombadil gone from the movie and all.

I would want to see the scenes with Tom Bombadil, i wonder how they would make him look/talk.

haha...

isn't it strange how, when you get down to it, PJ added all that was really necessary? i've seen many viewpoints siding with either PJ or Tolkien, and it seems that none of us can find a scene that wasn't added that would have really made a difference...

still, this is discussing what YOU would put in, not what should have been put in.

well, i'll leave you to your pondering, even though to me, it is an interesting waste of time :D

Confusticated:

I was referring only to The Fellowship Of The Ring, not the entire trilogy :D

Sorry, but I completely disagree. While it is true that PJ covered all the major bases, there is one missing scene that sticks out like a sore thumb: The gift giving scene. I know, this will be included in the Extended Edition (as will the elves leaving for the havens), but since you are talking about the theatrical edition that is the scene that is most noticeably missing. Hand in hand with that I'd say Lorien's majesty in general was missing.

After that, if I really had to make a single choice, I'd personally go for having Merry and Pippin's motivations for leaving the Shire fleshed out. With those two bits in the movie I would be content. The good news is that the first is in the Extended Edition for sure, and I am almost positive that the second is as well. Something just tells me that PJ didn't write the original script without any explanation concerning Merry and Pippin.

'Sup, dudes? *ignores crazy arguements* I'd put in Gollum's history told by Gandalf. :D

Definitely the gift giving scene. Yeah, I too know that it'll be in the extended version DVD, but I really missed it the first time I watched the movie - especially the whole Gimli part. Imagine what all the people who will never see the gifts are missing: The Phial of Galadriel, the elven brooches, rope...

I know! The first time I saw it I said to myself, WHAT? What about the
"Lockbearer", what about the elven rope, what about the broaches and the cloaks that help them avoid being seen? How the heck are they going to explain these things in the next movie with any continuity, or as certain motivations for the charcters. Even though they were afterwards WEARing elven cloaks with broaches, this is one place where one picture DOES NOT speak a thousand words. Explaination was needed, ESPECIALLY for the non-book readers. While we just get to feel ripped-off.

Yeah, that's just about how I feel. I didn't feel exactly "ripped off" but I did miss something. They are going to have to do some major explaining especially about the elven cloaks because of all the parts where they hide the characters like in Rohan (Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli) from Eomer, and Frodo and Sam when they are in the ash waste in front of the gates of Mordor, etc. Maybe the will have someone say something like, "These cloaks blend in with their surroundings! Lady Galadriel sure new what she was about when she gave them to us..." Sounds like something Sam would say. Or maybe they'll explain it when Merry and Pippin lose their brooches and Aragorn and CO find them?

To improve the film:
the barrow-wights,
Gandalf's letter at Bree,
Galadriel's gifts.
To please me:
Bombadil!

Leaving out Gandalf's letter definitely was the most atrocious mess up in my mind. That was the Polaris star of the FOTR book. I definitely missed it. Along with the fact that they never said the word 'Weathertop'. I mean how many icons can you leave out and still call it the same story.

I do agree that leaving out Gandalf's letter did cause for a lot of changes and speculation on the part of the LOTR ignorant audience. However, it wasn't soooo terrible that film no longer made sense. I personally wish that they had had more with old Barliman Butterbur. He looked perfect for the part but they reduced his character to practically squat.
