View Full Version : do you hate Peter Jackson?
Thorin II

The answer is yes for more than half of you, I'm sure.
What's wrong with him? He made the film that you are all so willingly commenting on (and criticising). It's HIS adaptation of the film. If he had the opportunity to consult Tolkien before shooting the film, well i'm SURE HE WOULD HAVE. But he had to make the film with only Tolkien's writings, not his living intellect, to guide his actions.
He's a director, and so he plays a big part in bringing out the story of the film. It's one hell of a task. To him, at the time of the shooting of the film, there was only two types of people: Tolkien Fans and the Others (the others being Non-Fans ofcourse). To please them both, changes had to be made to the story, to make it more err...comprehendible, shall we say, to the non-fans. With the weight of the film-viewing world on your shoulders, you can't exactly be biased, can you? So, he changed the story. So, he gave some characters parts that they shouldn't have. It was necessary.
Give PJ credit, and scold him if you must, but please don't simply put off his actions as ignorance. He has the world to please, not just a small percentage of the population known as Tolkien Fans.

I don't hate PJ, I just don't like his interpretation of LoTR.

I don't hate Jackson as a Director, I just have great distain for anyone who repeatedly opens his mouth and inserts his own foot. For instance, when Jackson said that TTT was basically "...a story of Genocide." and that Sauron and Saruman want to destroy all of mankind, I have a problem with that...perhaps because I've read the book enough times to realize that the schmuck is just trying to justify the amount of gore and battle he is including in his film. Anything the man says is self serving and quite often wrong...that's what I hate. "Get back behind those damned cameras Jackson and keep yer mouth shut!".

Sure his version is different from the books, but i still really like the movie. I think he did a good job in capturing the feeling of the book. (except Lothlorien)
And who can hate the man who gave us the incredibly funny movie "Bad Taste" :D

While there are parts of the film that I find, less than ideal, taken as a whole, I thought it was pretty darned good.
I also wonder whether, given the restraints of time, money and the sheer scale of the project, anyone could have done a much better job.
Yes there are parts changed, but did anyone honestly expect him to produce faithfully every single line and scene in the book? It couldn't be done, except perhaps in a VERY long series.
I saw the movie long before I joined this forum and started thinking as deeply about the subject as I do now, and I'm sorry if I offend, but I came out of the cinema grinning like an idiot and going 'Wow that was fantastic.' Maybe I was biased, having gone eagerly to see the Bakshi animated version many years before and hating it, but apart from 2 scenes, (the altar scene and green galadriel), I could see why changes had been made.
For me the film is a pleasurable addition to my reading of LOTR.

of course not. PJ did a good job adapting a hard book to the movie. Most of the major points are there. im really sorry if it meant so much to you to be able to see bombadil for an hour and to make moria 10 minutes longer but if pj included every detail the movie would be 4 or 5 hours long! If you think he did an awefull job dont see the movie.

You will never be able to have a perfect adaptation with the book. It's so long, so I just enjoy the movie as being based on the book. It's a great movie, except for the excessive cheeziness when the hobbits are reunited at Rivendell. I hate that scene. I hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it. AAARRRRRGGGGGHHH!!!!!!! sorry

I don't hate Peter Jackson at all. I think he did a very good job on The Fellowship of the Ring and I can't wait to see The Two Towers. I wish people would stop blasting him. OK, you don't like the way he made the movie. That's fine, but it's just your opinion. I liked the way he made the movie, but again, that's just my opinion.

Trust me, if you must hate, save it for people who really deserve it.

So, um...you just want the opinions that agree with yours then? I suppose we could have named this ThePeterJacksonForum.com instead and made a lot of people happier! Maybe you are right, perhaps we should just outlaw OPINIONS on this forum...*shrug*

No no no that's not what I am saying at all. If you don't like the movie then it's fine to talk about it and blast it if you want to. But blasting Peter Jackson just isn't right because he really don't do anything wrong. He just did the movie differently than the way some other people whished he had done it.

You sound a little like you might be a PJ swooner. ;)
Thorin II - (You think 1/2 of us HATE him?)
In reality, I find the question itself a bit offensive. Hate is a strong word and I don't think anyone here HATES PJ, as they probably do not know him personally. Gosh, if every time my teacher in school gave me critical red marks on my papers, or a low grade, I thought he/she HATED me, I would be a neurotic basket case now.
Why even accuse us of being so hateful?

Mindy, LOL, nope I am not a PJ swooner. I just don't thinks it's right to blast PJ over a nonmoral issue. LOL. I don't think it's right to blast anyone over a nonmoral issue.

lol. the only reason I used the word 'hate' was to get attention, so I could get opinions of his approach in the one thread, instead of many diff. ones. it's easier to read that way :D
