Hey, I'm pretty new to this forum, and I had a question. It may sound wierd, yet..I woudnt know because I havent been around long enough for my question to be answered. Well..here it is - I was reading about the actors in the movies for the LOTR, and they had mentioned a couple times that the cast had to learn the languages of the elves in a month. I was just wondering if one could actually learn to speak one of their languages, I know I have read the appendix's and read over some of the alphabet charts and all, I just haven't had the time to further look into things, so I figured i'd ask more experienced fans than myself lol. Well I hope this doesn't sound wierd lol..Looking forward to hearing from you guys.. :o)

go to www.grey-company.org and click on the language resources link.
When there scroll to the bottom until you find a link for Quenya lessons. Do not download the "Elven" dictionary or phrase book. it is not true Quenya but an "Elven" made up by the owners of the page for RPing purposes.

I know Quenya?? COOL! :p
Heh, well not exactly, but I understand the primers and basics of the language (as it is very close to that of Finnish).. I also have a very interesting book called An Introduction to Elvish, compiled by a guy called Jim Allan. It is very, very informative and interesting.
Another excellent page you must go to is www.ardalambion.com (http://www.ardalambion.com). Ardalambion (which is Quenya, and basically means 'The Languages of Arda') is the best page available (at least that I know of!) on Sindarin and Quenya. Check it out, and after you get over the shock of finding such a perfect site, check it out again! :D
Oh, and about the writing scripts.. The Appendices are not very good, if you actually want to learn to write stuff like the Tengwar and the Cirth.. It's just too concise and vague. The book I mentioned, AItE, is available at Amazon; it has a great chart which really helps you to learn the Tengwar and Angerthas (Cirth). I learned the Tengwar (the flowing, Elvish runes found eg. on the Ring) from it, and I can now write it fluently. Try it, it's worth it!
And if you're serous about this, consult a person at this forum called Cian; he knows everything there is to know about the languages!
Welcome to the forum! Enjoy! :)
