I request that our Deputy Guildmasters review our member list again and PM me with any corrections. There are several members who show up on the member list that appear inactive. I would love to free up some space for a few additional members but also want to keep the 50 active member rule.

Thanks to all.

Hello can I join as well. Thanks

Grond

A short note to let everyone know that Gate7ole and I are working on the membership issues. We are cleaning the membership lists and should have an answer to everyone who wants to join very soon.

Remember that to be in the guild... you must not just join but you must participate. If you don't participate... you will be dropped from the guild.

For the new applicants

At the Applications instructions, I posted the rules of joining. I quote them here:

The process to join the guild is the following:
-You post at this thread your interest in joining.
-For one week, you are considered an unofficial member of the guild, and you can participate in all the activities of the guild.
-After the end of the week, you will contact FoolOfATook, to have the appropriate test that will determine your rank.
-Then, you are an official member of the Tolkienologists.

So, all the new applicants:
MATTMAN, kaelath, Tuilin, Ecthelion
can participate in the activities of the guild to show their willingness to contribute. After this, they will be announced official members.

MATTMAN

MATTMAN AND KAELATH:

No one is allowed to be a member of two or more of these guilds:
1. The Guild of Ost-in-Edhil
2. The Guild of the Periaur
3. The Guild of Scholars
4. The Guild of Tolkienology

since these guilds are separate groups and debates are held between them.

You are both members of the Scholars and of the Tolkienologists. Kindly resign from one of these.

Thank you

Thank you Please note what irthrynluin is saying and note that I would say it a little nicer. :)

Since we're both "debating" guilds, you will need to choose in which one you will want membership. Both guilds (I believe) are open to non-members for discussion in most threads... so you can be a member of Scholars or Tolkienology and still contribute to the other guilds discussions. I personally intend to contribute to some of their threads shortly. :)

Both of you MATTMAN and KAELETH are welcome both here and there, you'll just need to decide to which one you "pledge your allegience". ;)

But im still interested in joining so should I just let you know when I come back and pick my activity and testing up again?

In a week after your application, when you will have participated at least a little at the events of the guild.
(and of course, you must then be tested to also get a rank).

What you do now is to look around, see what is going on in Guild and ask FoolOfaTook when you can be tested in order to get your Guild-rank. Meanwhile, you can participate in any and all activities in the Guild!

i know way more than gilgalad! (until the test proves me otherwise). Ill kick his ass in school on demand - he'll get a pencil case into the back of the head ha ha ha. He's **** at unreal tournament as well

I really hate being the square authority figure, but TTF frowns on profanity, and we here at the Guild dislike posts about violence against members, even when they are said in fun, as this clearly was. To be honest, right now I'm probably overly sensitive about violence, with everything that's going on in the world.

Now that we have the depressing, awkward lecture type thing out of the way- welcome to the guild. If I can do anything to make your time here better, or you just want to hear a bitter baseball fan bemoan his team's losing their first two games against the bloody Expos, don't hesitate to get in touch. ;)

Welcome, Evenstar373!

This is as good a place as any to list what you've read. Welcome to the Guild- please go ahead and begin taking part in whatever activities here sound interesting to you, and when I announce that the testings are starting back up (It will be within the next three or four weeks), you'll be able to recieve a ranking. For the time being, I'd encourage you to post a brief profile of yourself in the "Meet the Guild" thread, so we can all get to know you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask either Lhunithiliel or me. :)

News for new members!

My name is Hirila and I have officially been installed as Deputy Guild Master - Membership. After being member of the forum for 1 1/2 years and being in the Guild from its beginning. I am not the one who knows most about Tolkien or does most to learn more. But I like his works and like to look at them with common sense.

My job here includes:
Dealing with whatever you new members want to ask but have never dared to.
Don't be afraid of asking, I'll try and give as much help as I can.

And if you ever feel unhappy, I'm there to dry up your tears. More in the thread: "Membership & more - it's for YOU".

And remember to post as much as possible. Not quantitatively, but qualitatively. This Guild lives from its members, and what we need is posting, posting, posting.
As you have seen, there are many threads you can participate: from plain poem writing to giving lectures or participating in a debate.

Come on, have a look around.

Oh and... welcome to the Guild.

Walter

My congratulations to the guild for your newest member. :)

I guess most of you have no idea what a gem you have recruited here...

And as for the ranking of Eriol I would like to suggest for the guild leadership to carefully read some of Eriol's contributions on TTF and then decide *who* of you would qualify for testing him, if any...

Eriol

Guys, you're embarrassing me... I feel like one of those soccer stars that was just hired by a major team (and it IS a major team!), so I will make the standard speech in that situation:

"I am here to contribute, it is a great team, I hope I can give any help and share in the achievements of this great group, and I'm ready to do whatever the coach tells me to do... I am aware that the competition can be fierce, but with such a collection of stars I am positive the fans can look towards some titles by the end of the season..."

And I hope I won't disappoint you... whatever it is that you expect of me!

As a "reward" ;) I'm giving you my "blessings" to add to your signature the honourable title "Member of the Guild of Tolkienology" :) :D

Psst...Walt..... you've lost him for ever! :p
*******

As for the tests:

I have been thinking lately about this matter and here is what I want to share with you:

Could it be possible that we do the testing-procedure like this:

Level 1: Basic knowledge test >> incudes "The Hobbit" and the LOTR books >> 10 q-s on the "H" and 10 on the LOTR >> If one gets no less than 16 points (1 point for each Q) s/he may get the rank "Apprentice Tolkienologist" and if s/he wishes may take the next test.

Level 2: Includes "H", LOTR and the published Silmarillion - books >> now we shall have 10 more Q-s on the Silm.>> one gets no less than 24 points s/he gets a rank "Student Tolkienologist" and may go on if s/he wishes

Level 3:Includes the "H", LOTR, "Silm" and UT >> 10 Q-s for each book + 5 additional Q-s trying to prove the person's "broader" view on Tolkien's writings >> one gets no less than 32 points and gets a rank "Senior Student Tolkienologist"

Level 4: High knowledge level - includes all above books + the HoMe-series and the Letters >> here I would suggest 20 Q-s but they should be such questions as to ask the one who is passing the test to show much deeper knowledge and understanding on Tolkein's writings and about the author himself>> one gets no less than 18 points and gets a rank "Schollar Tolkienologist"

Level 5: all above books + some of those writings that are about Tolkien's works - biographies, Shippey's great works (unfortunately I haven't read them, but some loremasters say they are an amazing sourse of information concerning T's world!!) etc... >> here I am at a loss because I really can't imagine what Q-s are to be asked IF asked at all. Yet if there is someone who could help and make up 10 very good Q-s, it would be wonderful! >> one should get no less than 10 points and so gets the rank "Loremaster Tolkienologist

OK... This is my idea.
The point is that everyone can take one level- test, get a rank and then IF s/he wishes may try the next test.
OF COURSE the Q-s for each level must and will be more difficult than those in the previous level, so it won't be that easy to get a rank...One shall have to EARN it!!!

Well????

Opinions?

FoolOfATook
05-17-2003, 10:24 PM
Actually Lhun, that's not too far from where the tests are right now. As for the passing grade for each test, Grond and I worked that out a while back. I'm not convinced that we need to change anything about the testings (here comes Walter's remark ;))....

Lhunithiliel
05-18-2003, 12:05 AM
This is all very well, but don't you think I should know more about what you worked out a while back?

To tell the truth, except for some general explanations, I have not yet seen a detailed outline of the system of testing and ranking. And I do think, however, such is necessary to be provided in the way I tried to present it up above.

So, as long as you are now in charge of this duty, I'll expect you to provide this information to the members of the Guild.

You see, it is important to every new and old member, who is to pass a test for a particular rank, to know what is expected from him/her and thus s/he may decide whether s/he has enough knowledge to cover a particular test.

So, I am counting on you and expect to see a sketch ( like mine above) presenting the now active system of testing and ranking.

Besides, since you are in charge of this activity now, it would be nice, IMO, if you outlined also the benefits of getting a rank within the Guild. This, I expect, will give some good motivation for passing the tests and getting a rank.

FoolOfATook
05-18-2003, 02:46 AM
Lhun- a rough sketch has been up for months at the begining of the thread "Testing and Rankings Please Read". As to the number of questions- Grond and I originially settled on 15 per book, but in practice I found this to be a bit too cumbersome and lengthy, so I reduced it to 10 per book, with 5 questions about the LOTR Appendices.

So, as long as you are now in charge of this duty, I'll expect you to provide this information to the members of the Guild.

I'm sorry, I thought that the testing thread was a good example of providing information to the guild.

And it would actually mean something if you critiqued the tests after you had, I don't know, actually taken one....

If I'm gonna be getting grief over the way that I choose to conduct the tests, watch how quickly I come to see the logic in Walter's point of view about the tests.

Eriol

*The newbie, concerned at the friction between two eminent Guild members (and masters!), tries to change the subject*

What should one (me, for instance) do to get tested? Is it mandatory?

FoolOfATook
05-18-2003, 03:56 AM
Is it mandatory?

I don't really like words like "mandatory", but it is strongly encouraged, if you follow. ;)

What should one (me, for instance) do to get tested?

I've been meaning to PM you about this, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Basicly, I conduct the tests over MSN Messenger or AIM, or in some special cases, over PMs or Email. I prefer MSN Messenger. Either find me when I'm online, or send me a PM with what times would be good for you, and we'll do this thing.

That's great! And how about a detailed one?
....because as long as people come very rightfully with questions like Eriol's
What should one (me, for instance) do to get tested? Is it mandatory?
... I see that work is not done properly.
You see, to just tell somebody: "Come! I'll test you" and not give her/him some reasons and incentive... Well, it always leaves a place to wonder "Should I pass the test or no?"

And it would actually mean something if you critiqued the tests after you had, I don't know, actually taken one....
FoaT, remind me if you please, when did YOU pass the tests? ;)
The point that you have all the questions is not very convincing, for if you remember, I composed quite a number of Q-s about the RotK and I have seen the questiones that you and Gate had prepared.... To some extent I am too familiar with them ;) :D

If I'm gonna be getting grief over the way that I choose to conduct the tests, watch how quickly I come to see the logic in Walter's point of view about the tests.
And how should I understand this?

Ah, Master Took!
With this little discussion of ours, you made me look through and around and this is what I've found:

Testings and Rankings- PLEASE READ
Brothers And Sisters of the Guild:

The Ranks:
Level 1) Novice - entry level with no test or requirements
Level 2) Apprentice - basic first level rank requiring knowledge of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (Test required)
Level 3) Journeyman - Requires reading of the Silmarillion (Test required)
Level 4) Sr. Journeyman - Requires reading of the Unfinished Tales (Test required)
Level 5) Expert - Requires reading Letters and some HoMe (Test required)
Level 6) Master - Requires extensive knowledge of all of Tolkien's works. (Extensive test required) Also, this rank will likely require either an advanced skill in Quenya or a high degree of knowledge about the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien (and when I say high degree of knowledge, reading Carpenter's biography isn't enough. My Tolkien test will be a real beast ) However, Grond and the rest of the leadership of the Guild (and leaders who are only nominal, such as myself ) have yet to reach an "official" position about this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So far, only a relative handfull of Guild members have indicated what rank they seek to test for, or to defend. The only ones are:

Grond- Expert (Untill I can convince him that if he isn't a Master Tolkienologist NONE of us have any hope of that rank )
Beleg_strongbow- Senior Journeyman
Anamatar IV- Senior Journeyman
gilgalad(The Irish one )- Senior Journeyman
Celebrien- Senior Journeyman
Lhunithiliel- Senior Journeyman
Gate7ole- Journeyman
Finduilas- Journeyman
Gil-Galad(The Bulgarian one)- Senior Journeyman
Goldmare- Apprentice
Froggum- Apprentice

So, there it was! So, there WAS a detailed outline of the testing system...

So,I stand corrected!!!! :o

Only....one thing I do not understand - how come that I have that "Sr.Journeyman"- rank if I haven't passed a test?:o  :o

FoolOfATook
05-18-2003, 08:56 PM
That list of names that you found was an old list of people who had committed to taking the tests for certain ranks, not of people who took the tests.

Glad that we're back working on the same page, Master. ;)

You are most welcome in the Guild of Tolkienology and I hope you will participate actively in the Guild's matter and enjoy yourselves here.

Lhunithiliel
05-28-2003, 06:54 AM
TO ALL NEW APPLICANTS AND ENLISTED TOLKIENOLOGISTS:

Anyone who wishes to enter the Guild of Tolkienology is most very welcome!

And of course, you may be a member of any other guild at TTF.

I would only like to point out that before you apply for membership here, you'd better decide for yourself which debating guild you'd like to be in.

A debating guild? - Well, check out the on-going Grand Debating Tournament and you'll see which they are.

The thing is that if you become a member of two (or more) debating guilds, in activities like this one you should chose which debating guild you'd like to represent and I, personally, feel uneasy to know that our Guild has ...say 25 members and not all of them are ready to represent the Guild and defend its honour when it comes to that.

Therefore, from now on:

I would ask all the new applicants AND all the now enlisted Tolkienologists to make up their minds and DECIDE which debating guild they are in - OURS or some other guild

I shall personally check this matter!
And I shall have to take off the membership from those GoT- members enlisted here, who have decided to debate for OTHER guilds and NOT for the GoT.

Finally,
As I have stated at the beginning of this post - any member of the GoT has the right to be a member of any other NON-debating guild and participate in any activity s/he likes around the TTF which are outside our guild! :)

Lhun, you did a great job posting your last post.
Last week we had such problem with a member who wanted to join the Guild and to participate in the debating team.I enlisted her in the team and imagine how suprised I was when Aule told me she was in other guild team too.

And now I want to tell all new members of the Guild. It is our policy to include a "greeny" in our debating teams.Everyone who is new here and does not have much experience is welcome to join the team.He will be given the chance to participate actively in some Rounds(probably without those with GoS and GoiE-bacause of reason I've explained in the Great debates' matters thread)Thus, you, all new members will have the great chance to gain experience and cognition and also you'll have the great opportunity to learn from the best(Nym,Lhun,Gate7ole,Eriol,Foat,Beleg,Ancalagon, Ithrynluin,Maedhros,Inderjit S)and many many others.
Another activity I want to tell you about is The Gallery of Characters. That is a place where everyone can make biography of his favourite or most hated characters. It has educational purpose and when it is completed(after 2 years at least)it will be a whole encyclopedia concerning Tolkien's characters.A place where everyone will be able to find everything about a character he needs information. All of you who want to join can do that in The Gallery of Characters -work-book.
Good luck to all new members.
I hope you will enjoy the time spent in out most loved Guild of Tolkienologists.:)

For me it isn't enough, though I read: 'The Hobbit' (long ago-I think I should refresh it;)), 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion'. I've read also 'On Fairy-Stories'<--great essay I think.
Everything that I mentioned I read only once (lack of time), so I don't think I'm an expert (I think novice with some reading done;)), but I'm eager to learn more (and read more, of course, if only I had time).

You are welcome.
"Greeny"means members of our Guild who doesnot have experience in debating and it is their first time to participate in such activities. We have such policy cause first of all through debating everyone gains more and more experience and cognition in Tolkien'w world and books. What is more, next year when the next tournamnet come,we'll have a team filled with capable and smart debators. Thus we'll have the chance to defend our Guild's name and honour in the best possible way. When more and more greenies become good debators we'll be able to replace those who have left the Guild(for example FOAT).
I'll put you in the list.:p

Beleg

I really don't like this "Greenie" tag.
I am not in favor of any discrimination among the members upon the bases of experience.
IMO, in debates all members are equal and should be dealt with equally.
The word "greenie" soulds insulting to me.

Lol, Beleg, calm down. I think that it is useful to know if a member is 'greenie' and if not cause even though I don't like descrimination, too, this IS NOT descrimination! It is just so that we can differ more experienced and less experienced members. Because you should agree with me that it is very important if a member has a lot of experience in debating and if they have no!!
So I think that the name 'greenie' should not insult anyone but only encourage him to gain more and more experience and become one day an Expert!

Scatha
06-23-2003, 10:40 PM
Beleg, to be honest, the debates are one of the hardest things I ever rolled into.... and that was in round 2. I myself am a greenie in that sense and not afraid to admit it.

Perhaps the term rookie would be more friendly though?

Eriol
06-23-2003, 11:16 PM
I suppose I was a greenie myself, although no one called me that on my first debate. Right or wrong, my fame preceeded the works :D.

It was the first time I ever debated about any Tolkien subject.

"Greenie" or non-greenie, anyone willing to devote time to the subject is more than welcome, as I see it. And in that sense Beleg is right -- once a member of the team, no "greeniehood" applies.

So, as sometimes happens, I think everyone is right.

:)

Grond
06-23-2003, 11:40 PM

No Beleg is it not insulting.I put it in use for good purposes.I don't want to offend any of them.

Eriol, you sad you were a "greeny",but actually Lhun said, when she suggested to include you in Round 1,that you were a great debator, and you proved that in the best possible way, cause thanks to you and Gate7ole we won round 1.But for example there are people like Finduilas who didn't have any experience even in debating, and she did a great job too,she learned to do it.

I beg you, allow me the honor and privilege of joining this most noble Guild.

I bring to you gifts of my creativity, word-smithing, and deep interest in (and somewhat of an above average familiarity with) the works of the Good Professor. Please give me instruction on what I must do to qualify for admission. Thank you, and I eagerly await your response.

WOW!!!!!!!

This is the kindest application I have recently seen here! ;) :D

HELLO, Mithrandread!!!

You know, to enter the Guild is the easiest thing - one applies and.....he/she's in :)

It is LATER when one shows her/himself a worthy member!

You find us in a period of reorganization and vacation.
Most of the guild-memebers are missing from the board because of the summer holidays and the activities in the Guild are ....let's say on a summer holiday too. ;)

The one activity that has certainly not ceased is the Debating Tournament, in which we send our teams. Soon there will be a Round 5. You can of course learn about iit in a separate forum, outside of the Guild, named after the tournament itself.

But as a newcommer to our place, you are free to "walk" around, get acquainted with every thread and decide for yourself which activity you would like to participate in.

The "Meet the Guild" - thread would be one of the first "must"-stops on your tour. Let us know about you and you can meet the rest of us :D

Soon there will be a testing-ranking page where each member will have the opportunity to pass a all-Tolkien-knowledge test and get a Rank (as for these ranks, please, read "Testing and Ranking")

Well........ feel yourself at home here! :D

Ok..... ok... that's it. I'm applying. I've been admiring this guild for a while... and even though I'm still extremely nervous about asking to join, since my Tolkien Trivia no where near matches that of most in this guild, I guess I'll go ahead with it while I've got the courage to post. :D
Well, as for my reasons for choosing membership in this guild, I'm always looking for good discussions and debates on Tolkien, and just plain Tolkien-based stuff. Heck, that's why I came to this message board in the first place. Anyway, since I'm always complaining to Anamatar about how I can never find really good threads and debates to get involved in, (:D:D:D) he suggested that I join the GoT. So, blah blah blah, I checked it out, and I definitely do like the looks of this place.
My current knowledge in Tolkien writings? Let's see... well I've read The Hobbit, The LOTR trilogy, and The Silmarrilion (Though I must admit, I struggled my way through that last one.) I suppose I'm pretty good with my LOTR Trivia, since I've read it three times before. The Hobbit I suppose I'm a bit rusty since I've read it twice, but both times quite a few years ago. The Silmarrilion I read about a year ago, but like I said, I struggled through it. Hmmm.... let's see here... besides that, that's about as far as my knowledge of Tolkien's works go... but I'm also working on learning Quenya right now, if that counts for anything. :)
My expectations from this guild... let me think... I guess the things I'm expecting are getting into some serious debates and discussions with some people who really know their Tolkien stuff and just love his works as much as I do. I'm sure I'll get even more out of it than I'm expecting, though. :)
My apologies, I don't have any ideas for new activities within the guild just now, but if I ever come up with any, I'll let you know. :D

So, there you have it. My application. What say you?

Manveru

Thank you very much for your application and for your post!
And I very much hope you'll find here what you're looking for! :D

Now... you enter the Guild in a period of a sweet summer "nap" ;) :D, and reconstruction. But hopefully untill the Guild's birthday - August 31-st - everything will be done and the Guild will be ready for active functioning during the active season.

Meahwhile feel free to look around and get to know everybody and everything what we have here.
I'll invite you to also register at the "Meet the Guild" - thread! :D

hi to all again,
i am happy that they are more bulgarian people here.i ama verry thankfull for Finduilas's words. i must say here that she is all so a wondersfull girl.actually the most amazing i have ever met.i am sure that most of the member here knows what i am speaking about.
well how i said before i choose this guild because i find it the most interesting.how i said i am a member of two more forums about the lord of the rings.they arent on TTF.well they are good but they was always something missing.the people werent that regular as here and there was one more thing i didnt like.they were too many people that were writing stupid thing that arent connected with any of the tolkin's works.well at the end i decided to quit(sounds like i am leaving a job:)and to find a new forum,a forum that wii make feel good and where the people really knew how unique the tolkin's words are.
about my knowledge on the tolkin's worls.well here i will decided the others to make their own conclusions and deducations.i love the tolkin's works.they are(how i said before) unique.
So far i think that my expectation ,wich were and still are to find good frineds and expand my knowledge on the tolkins'works, are just how expecred.here the people a really nice and i knew i will find good friends
Last for know, about the new ideas.well i really donr have new ideas yet.the forum is verry good(almost perfect)and may be soon i will come with some new ideas to make even more good then know.i think this is one pf the few forums where you can really talk about tolkin and his brilliant work.
well that for me so fat.my future is in your hands know and i will you that you will make the right desition that will make the both sides feel good and satisfied

1) Manveru, is your name Michael? (my middle name is michael, and on a website that has a list of names and their elvish equivalents, and it had Michael as 'Manveru,' meaning something like 'Who is like God?')

2) Aren't you already a member? If so, then why are you waiting? What for?

3) That link brought me where they said it would be ready by the end of August. Is that true? do I have to wait until September? I know I said I would wait as long as was necessary, but I'd rather not have to in the first place.

A little misunderstanding here... Yes, I am a member (a proud one;))... and you are too-->You don't have to take a test for membership... only for the rank:D

Sad :( ... but true... Everyone, who wants to be tested have to wait till then...

But do as I (and most of new members) do... participate and don't worry about a 'rank'

:D

I guess I'll have to wait, and I'll do as you say... Though I was really hoping to see how well I could do, and I expected to see later today. Oh well.

I guess I'll go introduce myself in the other thread, as was previously suggested.

But you know what, I think this will be for the best... Since I cannot take the test for another 3 1/2 weeks, I can go out and read up on more of the books (like the Lost Road and Other Writings). It'll also give me time to continue to learn Elvish, and more time overall to prepare. That way, I'll get a higher Rank when I take the test. I'll be doing something else on my computer, but I'll come back later and introduce myself. See you later.

If you're looking for some immediate action - join the debating teams! :p
Or...start thinking what program of activities you, as a new member of the guild, will offer on the Guild's Birthday.... or just walk around the "halls" of the place getting acquainted with what has been so far,...or...why not vote for the new look of the Guild?...

See? There is what to do...

As for reading more... this will be a perfect thing to do. You know, when I joined TTF this is what I thought - that this place stimulates me to read and whenever I have time it's a Tolkien book in my hands and a notebook + a pen aside. ;)

OK... Just wanted to tell you all that soon it will be the official opening of the active season for the Guild and I do expect tons of good suggestions ! :D

All right-

I read the Hobbit at a very young age and many (more the 50) times after. Since reading that I got hooked on Middle Earth. So I check out The Lord of the Rings. After reading only the first book I loved it and so read the other two. And then after that I proceded to read the three over and over and over again. By then I was a fanatic and needed more, so I went on to the Sil. Then the movies came out and I liked them also. That's pretty much it. I have read a couple large biographies on Tolkien and I read the first 20 letters in his Letters Book. And I am still reading new books.

Hi, I was wondering, I would like to join, but I was currently (I dont remember how long ago) on the guild, I was actually the 10th member to actually join, but that doesn't matter, I became busy posting in MERPG and almost forgot about this guild. I was wondering if I could re-join, as I have not seen my name in the last member list. So far I have read LoTR, the hobbit, the silmarillion, and am readin gthe Unfinished Tales (almost finished). THanks for reading this! :D

Hello, Nevavarien! :)

And welcome back!

I do remember that you were one of my first guild-mates when Master Grond was still around building up the Guild...

But it has become a policy of the Guild that if one does not participate for about two months and has not explicitly stated the reasons, we consider his membership void after that period. And as you disappeared ... in one of the members-list-updatings your name was removed.

Now... Tell us please, what awoke the wish to return to the Guild?

What's so interesting in that MERPG? I have read about other active TTF-ers that are active there as well.
I know it's a site for RPG...but does that completely satisfy one who would like to go deeper into the world of Tolkien? ...I just wonder...

Nevavarein
08-21-2003, 06:21 AM
First, the reason I stopped posting is more then one thing. First of all, I was becoming quite busy with school and finals, secondly, at the time, (I still am also) I was playing two instruments, and I couldnt deal with all three, plus more then one site at a time posting. Why I'm coming back? I never wanted to leave this guild in the first place, but of course I never got the chance to tell anyone. (anyways my parents wouldnt let me go on the computer for a little while), I am not as busy s I was before, although I am going to begin high school as a freshman on monday. The last reason I want to come back is I like the things we do here, though I am not the best person at debating a topuc when it comes to it. I guess I found MERPG so interesting was because first of all, I joined this site because of the RPG's in the first place. And decided to conintue and join other rpgs in the new site, which i seemed to also post a lot more in then here. I just couldnt relate to most of the things people talk about on this part of the site, anyways I don't know anyone personally. I don't know about your last question though. I'll have to think of tha.

Let's make a "deal" ;)...

I'll let you re-join the Guild.
And you - you will try to be active - as much as your knowledge in Tolkien permits it. And you'll try to back up the Guild in all its activities.

Deal?

When I see your part fulfilled I'll enter your name in the main list. :)

THAT........btw..... is valid for every member here!

I would like to remind the newest applicants whom I let in the Guild so willingly, that except for the Black Captain, who has been most active, some others have disappered a couple of days after they had applied and had been accepted!

I am putting their names in the List of "pending members"

I see that the problem with the membership in the Guillaswellaswithactivity of the members IS STILL PRESENT.

I have tried everything but it seems to no decent results.
I hereunder quote what I have received from C9:
I am sending this message to you on behalf of the C9.

In the past there has been an unwritten rule among the Guild of Tolkienology, Guild of Periaur, Guild of Scholars, and Ost in Edhil that any person could only be member in one of these four guilds at a time. The C9 has deliberated on the topic of this "rule" and have come to the decision that any person can be in as many of the four guilds as they desire. But we are leaving this decision open ended; the guilds can run themselves individually. If Guild A decides they won't accept members from Guild B, C, or D, they are free to do so.

Thank you,

I need some opinions on :

1. Membership in more than one guild - what to do with it especially in cases of inter-guild activities?

2. Inactivity of members - should it lead to taking the person's name off the list?

I count on your participation in this discussion.

Thank you!

May I think awhile?;):D
There are so many 'matters' occupying my mind lately...
I'll post my 'point of view' ASAP

BTW: It seems to me that the begining of the 'active season' is more 'inactive' than during 'summer frenzy'...

As to double membership: Why not. People who have the time and wish to contribute to more than one Guild, let them do this. They won't be any better or worse than the 'ordinary' members. But just able to contribute as well.
And with the inter-guild activities... in that case they will have to decide for which Guild they want to stand up. Participate on only ONE side. The next time it may be they decide to be part of the other side.

I have long thought over the 'problem' with inactive members. Especially during that very short time of my being Deputy Guild Master for Membership. It seemed so cruel to just delete them from the members' list only because they didn't have the time to contribute for three months. And then I took a break of some time myself and I suddenly knew what made those members retreat for a while.
IMHO, they shouldn't be deleted from the list. Just make a second list and put the inactive members there. Put them there, when they didn't announce their staying away and obviously didn't post for three months, but also put them there when they want to take a break and announce this in the Guild. Just like the "I won't be here-Thread". That way they are still members, but are able to come back whenever they want to. And we have knowledge of their whereabouts and also know who's currently active and who's not.

Nothing else to add... except for one 'but' (there's always a 'but';))

Do you mean 'swapping' during a whole tournament thing? Participating in one debate for Guild A and in another in Guild B?
'Cause if so, I don't think it's a good idea. I think in such cases members should decide which guild is their, how to say it, "mother-guild" and stick to that. Also participating in debates in which two guilds (which a memeber is conected with) stand against one another is somehow 'weird' to me... There's always sth that 'connects' a member with a guild. It's somehow strange...

Well, you can join as simply applying, as you have done...;)

Now, please, write some words about yourself and why you would like to join this Guild. You should also be active. Check the other Threads and see if you are intrested.

And...WELCOME!
:)

I guess you got that wrong, Manveru:
I didn't mean swapping during a tournament. A tournament with a series of debates is just like "one" debate. You have to decide on which side you are in the beginning. But for the next tournament, or the next single debate, you may want to be on the other side.

And I see no problem in having to debate against your own Guild. You will be part of your other Guild for that time. And mostly in debates you have to find arguments against your own opinion, what does it matter, when you're argumenting against your own "family".

Starflower: Don't worry about joining us. Tell Lhun about it, she's kind of the boss here. But as I have no objection against your joining us, I'd like to give you an early welcome.
Do you know what this is all about? The Guild of Tolkienology and its relations to the other Guilds? About the secrets of initiation? (Just kidding... or... maybe not?...) ;-) Sorry, I'm a funny mood today. Don't know why.

Don't hesitate to ask whoever you like. You will be helped out of any kind of bewilderment you might get into.

well as to why i want to join, it seems that this one is more about everything and anyting about Tolkien and his works, about debates and discussions about things... I'm not interested really specifically in religion or politics or history.... and the topics here intersted me ..

about myself.... I have been a Tolkien enthusiast for near enough 20 years now, ever since I was given the Hobbit for Christmas when I was 10 yrs old. I like to talk about details and stuff that makes you think about it.
I live in London , UK, and I'm on the internet 8hrs a day 5 days a week, courtesy of my work, so I don;t think I'll have problems about being active :)

anything else, just ask

That's better, Starflower:D.

Welcome "aboard one of the greatest (if not the greatest;)) ships sailing through a mysterious and boundless sea of Tolkien's knowledge"...;)

I would suggest you to take a look through the Guild's main posts, but I guess you did that already... if not "Meet the Guild" thread is good to start with;).

Welcome again:D.

I'm beginning to like this place already

:)

I have been browsing the topics already and they are very interesting. Only one I probably won;t be participating in is the Essay bit, I haven't written a thing since I left fulltime education 10 years ago!

Gil-Galad is right. It's not that hard (if I could... I'm sure you can, too;)). Think about sth 'inspiring' (it worked with me well:D)... the rest will come itself freely... you won't even notice... <boom> just like that... and you've got yourself an essay;)

I guess the topic is still "free", so...
