I agree about a period of one month - no need to rush a newcommer! :)
During this period a new applicant is welcome to participate in and for the Guild as much as he/she finds it suitable and fit. This is going to be the way to best present oneself to the rest of the Guild. It isn't IMO enough to only do it in the thread "Meet the Guild" but one should definitely show why he/she has decided to apply to our guild in particular. Right?
During this period the applicant CAN also pass the Quiz!

When this "testing" period is over, I suggest a brief "voting" for the members of the guild to say "Yes"| or "No" and to decide whether to grant membership to the applicant or turn it down. Only then I will enter her/his name into the Members List and he/she will have the permission to present her/him-self in the above mentioned thread.

How about that?

I think it's a fair treatment;). So go on, new-comers, stay active... it's worthwhile!

ManvEru, My Lord, (;) ), I DO GRANT YOU the permission to call yourself a member of the Guild! :p
Common!!! You have been so active and such a big help to us in everything! For which I am so very grateful! So, don't you worry about a testing period for yourself!
See... all of You? Have You seen this? I'm a member... a full member... it's at last OFFICIAL!;) (when I was writing that post with, me as an example, I was hesitating a little--NO, I AM KIDDING!!:D). Anyway... BIG THX for kind words, boss...;) I really appreciate that my 'small contributions to the guild' are being noticed...

THX AGAIN

CONGRATULATIONS MANVERU!!!!!
Lhun is right, your contribution to the Guild is always flawless!

Now,about the new applicants.
I think that
annalovesviggo
and

Starflower
should be given the opportunity to pass the testing period.
It depends on their participation in the Guild whether they will become members or not.

So I suggest the date for voting Starflower's membership to be
10-17-2003,one month after he wanted to join the Guil.
And for annalovesviggo the date to be 10-23-2003.
I'll take care of observing their participation and organizing the brief "voting".
;) :p

Now that I have officially announced the Application Instructions to our Guild, I'd like to ask the newcommers to read and follow them. :)

I am sure that in one-month's time I'll be happy to enter their names into the Main list of the Members of the GoT! :)

********

ATTENTION !!!

There are 6 members who have not shown up for looooooooong in the halls of our Guild and their membership is therefore pending.

IF within 3 days from today - 24-th September, they do not confirm their membership and willingness to do sth. for the Guild, the first thing I'm going to do about it is to consider them as new Applicants - therefore - they shall have to follow and observe the above discussed new Application instructions.

No, that's not fair. Give them a chance and most of all... give them the possibility to come back. We don't want to throw our members out, do we? We need everyone around here. And if only one out of those 6 decides to return to more posting, we have succeeded. And it is less liekely that one comes back if we remove them from the members' list without some period of consideration.
There is something you learn in marketing: always ask a second and a third time!

Of course, you are right! We'll ask them and ask them and if they don't want to reconsider their decision we can put them out of the member list or "freeze" their membership. And some day if they decide to return they will be most welcome to joiu us again!

May I join this guild, please?

I've been an avid Tolkien fan for over 30 years and I love discussing his works. I really enjoy reading the threads and will contribute when I have something useful.

Starbrow, WELCOME ! :D

I suppose you have read the application instructions, placed in the "outer" space of the Guild and you agree with them.
If you haven't done that, please do :) Take your time and "walk" around the halls of the Guild, meet the members and you're welcome to start participating in every activity that you might be interested in.
Meanwhile I have placed you in the list of the new applicants, thus you have entered into the one-month testing period.
Good luck and I wish you stay with us longer.
*******************************************

Now... the situation with the membership of the GoT is this:
21 full members - Beth has been re-entered :)
3 new applicants

New Applicants in a one-month testing period

1. Starflower - until 1.November
2. annalovesviggo - until 1.November
3. Starbrow - until 1.November

The downlisted people never bothered to come and say a word about their membership in the Guild, nor did they show any serious steps towards contributing to the Guild, or have completely disappeared ...
Therefore, I am taking their GoT-membership away.
I am sorry! :(

Pending Membership for not being active for a long time:

1. ILLOTRTM
2. spirit
3. Celebithil
4. illuvator
5. Nevavarien
6. Elennainie - Charter Member

Hey Lhun I think that until November 1st Starflower and annalovesviggo will haver been more than a month in the Guild.
Starflower-17.10.03
annalovesviggo-23.10.03
These ar the dates when they will be exactly one month later.
So I suggest these to be the dates for deciding their FATE
And about Starbrow I think November 1st is ok.
I'll organize the vote,ok?

I would like some more information about the Quiz. It's sounds like a lot of fun. I like to challenge myself. Where do I go to take it? Are there different levels, and if there are, how do you know which level to take?

Gil-Galad
10-04-2003, 01:12 PM
The QUIZ tests your cognition in Tolkien's world and his books.Every level consists of questions from his books and every higher level consists of more difficult questions from more books(The Hobbit,LOTR,The Silmarillion,Unfinished Tales,BOLT1,BOLT2,Letters etc...).You should try passing the Quiz and then you should report your result, thus you will be allowed to receive your Tolkienologist's rank if you pass successfully the one month testing period. This period is very important for you because you should participate actively in the Guilds'matters, thus you will prove you really want to be part of
The Guild of Tolkienology

Congratulations, Starflower!

See, boss... How could I even try to 'revive' any newbie activities when potential 'newbies' have greater knowledge than me;):D.

BTW: I don't want to "nitpick" or do anything of such kind, but... I'd suggest using the threads in a proper way (unless you don't fear our wraith's anger--she's too lenient, I know;)). Everything related to ranks and tests post in here (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9630). Thank you.

And again... good work, Starflower.

Starbrow, the question is not only where you can take the quiz, but also do you really want to be part of the Guild? To become part of the Guild you should pass your one month testing period. That means you should participate in the Guild's activities as much as possible. You always can take the quiz, but if you don't pass the testing period, you won't be allowed to use the rank taken from the quiz.If I were you ,I would concentrate my efforts on participating actively in the Guild. The Quiz comes later.;)

yes yes yes ... she would love to participate more in Guild activities... but what can I participate in? There seems to be a whole lot going on, and I do post something when I feel I have something to contribute. I am not creatively inclined, so I doubt that the Glittering Caves section will ever benefit from me. I would like to knwo things like, can I join a debate that's going on ? Where to find these debates ? Also there are sections like Gallery of Characters where people have been assigned a biography - agian, nothing for me to actively participate in. If you would give me some general idea as to what goes on where and so on...would be a bit easier. At the moment my particiaption depends on really if i find something myself.... a little help would be needed I think.... :(

Yes,you are right, most of the things here need some research and more serious attitude, but I've noticed your posts in the forum and I think they are always flawless. That is why I think you definitely have the talent to do something bigger and more interesting.Did you see the second round of The Lectures? There are some interesting things.Of course you can participate in debates, even I think it will be possible to take part in the debate against the Guild of Elves/Dwatves.Just watch out for The Great Debate's Matters thread,ok?
And also, after the end of the Debate Torunament, there will be debates only for members of the Guild of Tolkienology in which you are most welcome! Also I'll try to organize debate every month with one of the other Guilds. Thus we will have the preparation we need for the next Tournament, next year!!!

I'VE GOTTA SOMETHING VERY IMPOTANT TO SAY!

I would like to welcome our new member Starflower!!!
In the past one month I kept an eye on her posts in the Guild and in TTF as a whole. She showed impressive cognition in Tolkien's works and world!!!
And what is more she proved she wanted to be part of The Gu!ild of Tolkienology!
After a vote between some of the members of The Guild we decided that the best thing for the Guild would be if Starflower become its member!!!

CONGATULATIONS!!!!

I hope you will enjoy the time spent here!!!

p.s.please write in the space under your posts your status in the guild, for example:
The Guild of Tolkienology.Expert Tolkienolgist and Member of The Guild of Tolkienology

There are some changes in the Member list.
Namely:
New Applicants in a one-month warning period

1. Mithrandread - Member /on a mision/
2. Black Captain - Member and Sr.Journeyman
3. Khôr’nagan - Member and an Expert Tolkienologist

I know that Mithrandread has a serious reason for not being able to be with us more often and I'm thinking of still leaving her name on the list.
As far as BC and Khôr’nagan, G-G, will you please PM the boys and ask them what their intentions are?

Ok, I was a member quite some time ago, but after being excedingly busy for a long time, I have come back to the TTF. And my first order of business was to re-apply for Guild of Tolkienology membership. That's if you'll have me for the one month trial period that is. :D

We needed some more representatives of the Holy Darkness around! ;) :D

All right, I'll enter your name in the List of those in the Halls of Waiting! ;)

What are we going to do with the following cases?

1. Mithrandread - Member /on a mision/
2. Black Captain - Member and Sr.Journeyman
3. Khôr’nagan - Member and an Expert Tolkienologist
4. Ms.Maggot
5. Beth

Could they at least show up and say sth. like "I am busy I can't be with you often but I'd like to keep my membership." .... or sth.similar...

Black Captain and Khôr’nagan received a pm from and they were warned about their situation. They stated they DID want to be part of the Guild. As for Black Captain I think he is not often online but still participates from time to time, only bad luck was the reason for him not to debate with us in the last round.
Mrs.Maggott seems to be too busy with her C9 things and so on.
Beth is busy with the Guild of Eruhini I suppose, but now when Scatha is back she is supposed to be take part in the guild of Tolkienology more than usual.
Mithrandread-I haven't seen him for ages.
Very bad situation I would say.:(

Greetings, all:

I'm a PhD student in English Literature, but more importantly, like many of you (I imagine) I'm one of those people who--ever since I secured a dusty copy of Lord of the Rings from the school library in the spring of 1992--have managed to find the time to read it once or twice a year. I like the book so much that I wrote my Honours thesis on masculinity, femininity and homoeroticism in LOTR (I didn't save it disk or on a hard drive--so I won't be able to post it).

I am also acquainted with The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales, and have managed to dip a toe into the waters of HOME. But I won't lie to you--my chief interest is in LOTR and in the peoples and events of the Third Age (although the fractious relationship between Numenor and the various peoples of Eriador/Enedwaith in the Second Age interests me as well). I'm really intrigued by the unanswered questions--what people did Tal-Elmar belong to? Why was Imrazor called "The Numenorean"? Were there still people living in Eryn Vorn at the end of the Third Age? Where might the non-Shire/non-Bree hobbits have lived? etc. etc. This is where we come in--the readership--not to re-invent the wheel, of course, but to wonder, to speculate . . .

Anyway, there it is. If you'll have me, I'd be honoured to join the Guild.

Regards

Well...
I'd say: "Welcome!" (and actually I do so), but it's a little 'unofficial' I guess... since I'm not in power and so on;)

I'm sure we (all) will be honoured when you join us.

PS. Have you read the 'application procedures'? No? I'd suggest to start from that... the thread is on the 'entance' screen of our Guild. I'm sure our "fresh-baked" GM and his Deputies will enlighten you on the other matters in due time...

Agh, what the hell... I'll risk that (I'm a King's Fool after all. "No strings attached";)): W-E-L-C-O-M-E!

I now stand in front of you as the new Deputy Guildmaster on New Members and Testing and Ranking! That's why I feel most honoured to welcome a new member in my very first day...and what a member, I should say! :)

Shaky, I have seen your contributions in the forum and I should say that I am highly impressed by your cognition and intelligence and therefore I want to congratulate you on your decision to join our Guild.

First of all, you should pass an one-month testing period in order to prove your seriousness of being a Tolkienologist. You will have to be active and contribute efficiently and effectively. Thus we try to avoid accepting the membership of unserious and inactive people. We will demand activeness, yes...but also high quality and good atmosphere.
We, as Tolkienologists, are like a big family and I hope we will make you feel as if at home too.
Feel most welcome to wander through the Threads and choose ones which match your range of interest, and participate in them.
A new debating period is starting. There is also the Hall of Characters Thread and the Hall of Lectures!
There is a letter writing Activity and a "What-if" game. There is both entertainment and serious demanding work!
The Guild of Tolkienology requires a lot and yet it gives a lot! I hope that you will enjoy your one-month period here after which we will have to decide whether you have contributed efficiently and consider your application. :)
Well, that's it, my friend.:)

I see you are a promising member;)...enjoy!

Finduilas told you all the information you need at the moment, but if you have any question just ask ;)!

Unfortunately the Debating Tournament is almost finished and you missed the opportunity to participate, but if you are found of debating you will have this chance pretty soon!!!

I hope you will enjoy your stay here!

Welcome!!!

Manv, come on,you know everybody here is in power of saying "Welcome" to the new members, especially those like him ;) :p

WOW!!!!!!!!

WELCOME !! WELCOME!! WELCOME!! :D

I am so glad to meet you here as well as in TW! :D

We all shall be honoured to have you as our co-member of the Guild!
And I am sure soon everyone will realize how much we can learn from you, because your knowledge is remarkable! I hope to see you "in action" ASAP! ;) :D

As for being interested in any unanswered questions ..... Why!... There is such a thread in the "Noldorin Forge" called the "Never asked question" which is the right place ! This thread is one of my most favourite and with your participation we may breathe a new life in it! :D

Just feel comfortable in our Halls and feel free to come forward with any suggestion!

I am really happy to see you here! :D

I am SORRY to interfere (not my right any more ) but Scatha, my friend, please, let's leave this place for applications only. News and discussions about new ideas have their fora both in Máhanaxar and in the Noldorin Forge.
Say... Would you like to move your post in the "Great Debates"-thread, please? There this wonderful suggestion will receive maximum attention as that place is the right one for discussing such matters.

Hi, Thingol!!!! :D

WELCOME to the Guild!

Feel free to take a "walk" around and get to know the people and the place, as well as everything that is going on.

To start with.... Master Grond, unfortunately :( is no longer a GM here. I used to rule the Guild for more than a year after him and just a couple of days ago I passed my service to the present GM - Gil-Galad!
But although I am the first to welcome you, be sure I won't be the last! :D
You'll see what a great community we are here!

And... could you do us a favour, please?
Tell gilgalad to come more often to these halls too! :D
If he wishes to re-establish his membership in the Guild, let him announce it and / or PM the Deputy Guild Master Finduilas. OK?

Thank you! :D

Well, I don't like to explain "stuff" (not much of a scholar type;)) and I'm not fond of "teaching" either, but you've got a point (so listen to him, King Greymantle--sorry, but that name starting with "T" doesn't want to "fly thru" my throat:D).

A new member?! YAY! :D

Hello, hello, Lotho! Glad to meet you here!

Now, the first thing to do is the one-month testing period. Which means that for a month you should be as active as you can and after that we will decide whether you are accepted or not. But I see your enthusiasm and think that there will be no problems..;)

So, we give you a nice and warm WELCOME and the rest is up to you.:)

Go to work, young man.;)
Oh, and later if you feel ready you may try to take the Ranking Quiz.:)

Good luck!!!

Good luck!!! LP: Well, I'm always as active as I want to be, and I'll probably just keep up my present activity level — unless I take to my bed, as I have aquired a helluva sore throat.

Ok, get better and don't worry. Health is most important.

As for the Quiz, here's the Thread:

When you take a Rank, you announce it in the Ranking and Testing Thread, so that GG can add it to your name in the Member List.:)

No, you only have to be active. For one month you have to be as active as you can. Participate in the Guild's activities, offer new ideas...that sort of thing. The Ranking tests are only by 'free will'.;)

You should be active not only during the one month testing period ;).
We have had several cases when members have not been active for quite a long time and they lost their membership.

Of course, you can join!
Now the first thing you have to do before you are an official member of the Guild of Tolkienology is to be as active as you can during one-month testing period.
But as GG says, after that too;).
After the month passes, we will decide whether you have been active and whether you are accepted.:)
Ok, Good Luck and enjoy the new Look of the Forum!;)

A most most welcome to our ex-member! Welcome and Good Luck!:)

Now, first of all, you have to pass an one-month testing period in which you should be as active as you can. (that won't be a problem, right?;))
Secondly...,hmm...the rest is upto us...you know, deciding whether you have been active etc.;) But if you do participate in the Guild's matters during this one month, then there's nothing to be decided.;) You're in.;)

So, I wish you good luck. :)

I am posting this announcement for *n*-th time:

Beorn, who is the person to allow the Quiz to be working, said that we shall have to wait because of the changes in TTF format.
How long? I don't know!!!! Every time I ask him, he says "a couple of weeks more". Last time (yesterday) - the answer was "a month hopefully".

So, even if I wished very much (which I do!!!) the Quiz to be active, it ALL depends on Beorn.

Gil-Galad

No. Unfortunately, as long as the Quiz exists in the old format, it is closed not only for passing the tests, but also for administering. So, I don't have access to the Quiz Administration pannel in order to do any changes whatsoever.

However, what we can do meanwhile is that we can at least gather new questions (and correct answers to them ;) ). Those, who wish to participate in this, please, send yopur suggestions to me.

And G-G, welcome back! These halls were beginning to turn into "Shellob's lair". ;) :)

Welcome Amarie! You are most welcome here!!

First of all to become a member of the Guild of Tolkienology you should pass the so called one-month testing-period.During this time you will have to prove that you really want to be part of the Guild and our big family :)
The only thing you should do is to participate in the Guild's activities.
As you will see there are many threads and topics which require serious research and knowledge. That is the place where you can learn everything about Tolkien and his world. There are also light-hearted threads in which you can take part if you are not sure in your cognition or you want to take a rest from serious things.

To become Journeyman you have to pass the Apprentice level first :)Unfortunately the Quiz is not working at the moment due to some problems with, which Beorn will (hopefully)solve soon.
Good Luck and Enjoy you stay here!!!

Finduilas will keep an eye on you during your one-month testing-period.;)

Hey,Master Grond!!Glad to see you around!!!

Okay... here's the deal. I have killed off a couple of the things that was keeping me from posting here as much as I'd like... but I still must take it relatively slow. I still have a job that is keeping me on the road and also working about 60 hours a week. I intend to post some in the general books forum to "add" to those discussions (if I have anything to add). :)

As for the guild, I will be happy to participate in "non-time consuming issues". I might be interested in participating in a debate here and there and contributing to some topic issues if that is desired. I think the guild has run smoothly in my absence and I am not seeking any leadership role here... just a "humble" member.

As I've stated numerous times in the past, I love all of you and have always had a consuming passion for Tolkien (as most of you know). I hope to be able to be a contributing member of the guild again (on a greatly reduced scale.)

Cheers,

grond

Welcome in these fine Halls!
First, you can look in here (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=13264). Read and follow (oh, and don't worry, it only looks so formal--usually all this is, hmm... piece a cake, if only you stay active;)).
Then...
Take a tour around our place (read a small booklet;) here (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=12977)).
And then...
HAVE FUN!
Nice to see you here (hope you'll manage all this)

One thing confuses me - the link to appliance has led me back here, in this thread. Lhunithiniel's ( i hope I spelled this correctly) post says to apply here. But I already had! so, am I on one-month test period now, or do I have to do something else before it? Meaning: am I already applied?

Finduilas

Finduilas steps into duty...;):D

Now about Lhunithiliel;)...I suppose she wouldn't mind if you call her Lhun till you get used to that "wraithish" name...;):D What do you say, Mum?:)

As for the links...hmm...here it is simple:
Now, as you have applied, you're on a one-month testing period in which you should be as active as you can. Participate in activities in the Guild or even debates..;) You can challange someone from the guild for a 1v1 debate or take part in a friendly GuildvGuild debate. Many, many threads with serious and more lighthearted matters. Just choose.;)
After the month passes we check if you have been active (meaning whether you have "reapplied" your wish to be a Tolkienologist by your participations) and if you have, you're in.
So, all you have to do is participate in the first month....and as GG often corrects me...after that too.;)
So, good luck and welcome!:)

Great! I can't wait to have that test!!! And as for debates, I'm glad I can participate...
Let's see how good in words you are, petty mortals! Muaha-ha-ha-ha...
Just kidding... ;)

Welcome Melian Le Fey and MelianLasgalas.
It is very easy to become a member of The Guild Tolkienolog.I will preview one of my previous posts,in which are the mist important things:

First of all,to become a member of the Guild of Tolkienology you should pass the so called one-month testing-period.During this time you will have to prove that you really want to be part of the Guild and our big family

Good Luck!

Hello fellow Tolkien addicts!!

I was wondering if I could join the guild of Tolkienology. I have been urged to become a member for quite some time, in fact. After being a active member of TTF for over a year now I at last think I am ready to advance in the world of JRR Tolkien. I am also an active member of MERPG, and would have also participated at Tolkien Debates, had it stayed in business.

Please fill me in on anything I need to know...

Thank you very much!

Dear Mornambar, MemorableArwen, Sabeen,

I personally would be most happy to welcome you in the Guild, just as our Blue Angel did (thank you! ... you're an angel...you know! ;) :D) )

The thing is that just a couple of days ago the Master of the whole TTF and some Mods expressed the idea of closing all guilds and transforming them into something else ....
What can I tell you .... It's their place - they are the masters -they command the parade ....

So... for the moment, all I would offer to you is to just have a "walk" around these abandoned halls and learn about the glory of this Guild's past.

Noone knows whether this place will have a future! :(

Yeah, seems true (even too realistic to me). I saw some of the Guilds had vanished from the main site (archived, like the GoE or removed & merged into something else, like GoA&W--I guess, wouldn't be too fair for them to disappear wholy:p)

Well, I haven't read whole thread about cleaning, but I suspect it's because lack of activity in the guilds themselves, discussing some topics that would suit everyone's beloved Book Fora and so on...

Personally, I don't want this place to be dealt with in any aspect (let it stay, pls), cause it became (nearly) the only one I visit from some time --> maybe it has sth with that too--if they close it, I may... either "walk away" or... start to participate a little more in other sections of TTF--creative thinking, oh! Powerful Ones (Admin & Mods & whoever else to get this thing (TTF) running...);)

But... I'll stay till the end of GoT (if any... sooner or latter) as active as possible... what will come next? We'll see...

WELCOME, Sabeen!! Enjoy your stay (maybe not for long...)

:D

Really, guys...The Guild of Tolkienology hasn't got much to worry about as it is still quite active. What was discussed was NOT closing down the guilds for no reason at all, as some would have you believe. It was suggested that the inactive guilds should be archived so as not to take up bandwidth and forum space. Clearly they have ceased to attract any attention, and even their members think this is the right course of action (OiE, Eruhini, Scholars, Periaur). What some observed (me being among these) is that there is not much sense in having guilds if they are going to be copies of the book fora, because this both 1. takes away from the book fora and 2. the 'ordinary' book discussion threads in the guilds don't get much response from non-guild members. Is that not a reasonable thing to say? Or a true thing to say? Why not have one great big guild (of which the fitting name to me seems 'the guild of Tolkienology' ;)) which would host all sorts of neat Tolkien-related projects, like the Gallery of Characters, the Quiz, lectures, essays....There is so much material that fits better in a guild than it ever would in the book sections! :)

Cheers!

Phew! What a relief!

From what I read in that thread, it was obvious that most of the Administrative staff here are thinking on re-organizing the guilds into something else .... I still think I am right in thinking so...
But if the GoT is still to be tolerated .... Hmmm...

You know, guys, I am beginning to lose patience with the silence in this place !!!!!!!
I mean ... I can't fully understand what has happened but we' ll have to do sth. about it!

And in order to keep this thread clean from the p.o.v. of its purpose, I'm opening a respective separate thread.

All invited! :)

My name is Aulë. I'm from Australia. I've never had much to do with these "guild" things. ;)

Could I please join?

Hello, Aule!

For the moment, these halls are inhabitted by flying creatures - some from the world of light and others - from the darkness :p (I'm getting dangerously addicted to this "profile"! ;) ), but all I can say is WELCOME!

All you, who come in,

FEEL WELCOME!

Walk around freely and suit yourself as at home. No guards to stop you, anyway! :p

But as

The world has changed,
I feel it in the water,
I feel it in the air....

... and in my old bones ...

I guess that if you stick around for a while, you might witness the re-birth of this place.
And this is a miracle not to be missed! :)

Pardon my ignorance, but who - or where - is the leader of this party here?

If this is to become something like a refugium for PhiloTolkienists - crazy or no - and their foolish musings, I consider applying, hence, I'd like to learn a little more about application details and such...

oh, and by the way: he's not the only one. There is also another O-i-E'er considering whether or not to apply for GoT. (I'm still thinking. As you might have registered eaarlier, I am not quite sure if guilds are such a clever thing, after all...)

Now I know for sure!

I AM walking in a dream! :p :D

Arvedui, I understand what you mean... That is why we are considering the idea of transforming the very essence of what a "guild" is... That is, the GoT may become a workshop and an active arena for all-T-related projects. These projects will be either "exported" into some respective sections, or implemented right here. There exist several, you know this well, and starting from them, with some more organizati
