View Full Version : The first reading/discussion
This poll is only for the members of the Guild of Tolkienology
This is to find out which book we would like to read from for our first discussion.
Anyone who would like a say in what we are going to be doing might want to vote
Those who can not vote just post your choice as others have done. Or perhaps try another browser if you have one.

I voted for the Silmarillion.
Let's start from the beginning! ;)
I however would expect that whatever the discussed topic will be, it should be "backed up" by facts taken from all sources. As I have said on another occasion - those who don't have the other written sources or (as in my case) have got them a couple of weeks ago (which means they can't have enough knowledge of these particular works) - should be free to use the sources they know best and learn from the posts of the other Tolkienologists.
Right? :p
Maedhros mentioned that he had made up his mind on the topic of the next debate and that he was going to announce it on Friday.
Let's see what he has in mind.
We can learn a lot from other people at this forum, not only specific facts but hear new speculations to take into consideration.

I'm not sure how much this will be so but the purpose of the reading discussion as I understand it is to gain the best understanding of the materiel we will be reading at the time. This will probably require that other books be mentioned . But they will not be the center of attention... But any such deviation from the topic should be short and sweet because we wouldn't want to get too side-tracked..this isn't the Bag End section....hehehe
I don't have all of Tolkien's writing's either, but I think we're safe for now Lhunithiliel...I'd be surprised if the majority votes from any other than Lord of The Rings, The Silmarillion or The Hobbit...:)

I am pleased that everyone is voting for the Silmarillion. Where else would one begin to delve into the world of J. R. R. Tolkien but at the beginning?

for some unknown reason I am unable to vote in polls. . . .
I would like to vote for the Silmarillion also!

I voted for "The Sil." as well because I need to buckle down and make time to read it (I've already started). If we discuss this I won't have a choice but to find the time, and I will increase my knowledge of the book during the process.

Ok, as soon as we have more of the members to vote on this poll, I will make a schedule regarding the discussions of the chapters. I was thinking about 2 weeks per chapter, but that is subject to change. Also remember that the Silmarillion proper is not a book written by JRRT, but it was a compilation of his work by his son Christopher. Hopefully, we can look a little at the source material (HOME) as we go chapter by chapter in these discussions.:)

2 weeks per chapter? It will take a year to finish! C'me on, some chapters are only 2 pages.

It depends on the chapter. And also, it not only will be the Silmarillion, but any other related text that has any meaning in the subject.
Also, because of the time constraints of members of the guild, more time to discuss the chapters would be needed. We want to give the chance to all of our guild and any outside individuals the time to participate in this.
Also this will be a serious discussion and not a tacarian one.:)

I've also voted for the Silmarillion, for reason's already mentioned by other's.
I would rather see this discussion last two week's,as I cannot alway's respond due to my time commitment's.
Let's all delve together, and bring light to darkness.
I agree that it is much better for some of us to have wait awhile to move to the next chapters than for others to miss out because that can not be here 10 hours a day like I am....:D

I also voted for the Sil and I agree that the length between discussions should be longer rather than shorter for those who do not have so much time.

The Hobbit is the discussion book in the Reading Ring, so that would be duplication. Lord of the Rings is the jam in the sandwich. Let's start with the beginning; ie: "My dear Milton".

I don't do duplication of topics.:)
You all will be happy to know that Silmarillion Reading Discussion begins this Saturday.:) :) :)
Each chapter will be devoted a two week time slot to assure that all of our members of the guild or in the forum in particular, who want to participate in it can. The purpose of the discusssion, is not to see, who knows more, but to gain a better understanding about the Silmarillion.
The first discussion will be the Ainulindalë
The additional not required readings are:
From Book of Lost Tales I: The Music of the Ainur.
From the Lost Road and Other Writtings: Ainulindalë.
From Morgoth's Ring: Part I Ainulindalë.
So, are you ready for some Silmarillion.:)
