I voted for the books
The movie could never match up to the books, but it's still good.

obviously the books but. i believe the original will always prevail in any matters such as this. but the movie is very very good. and excellently done at that.

I voted for the books.
No movie can top the works of Tolkien!!

i chose the same. Its a hard work to translate and although the movie could never match the book it deserves the recognition of being close to he books.

I don't actually think the book is that great *dodges tomatoes thrown at her* as far as books go, and the movie was a good adaption.
pippin was my favourite charactar in the book and in the film, so i am glad that they did a good job. :)
I chose the same. :)

The books come first by quite a distance!
While I feel that the film is one of the best I ever seen, (despite obvious discrepancies from the books), the books have a depth and breadth unattainable by any movie, which keep one going back for more on a regular basis.

Definitely the books. The film was great but it lacks the depth of the book, as well as Tolkien's unique descpriptive.

okay, some people my think i am crazy, but IMO i don't actually think the books are that great. sure, they are a fantastic read and everything, but they are quite cheesy too. i think the books are slightly too over rated (IMO).
at least the movie has encountered some critisizim by some and is not over-rated.
and i don't speak factually i am just sharing an opinion so please! don't backslash me, but if you strongly dissagree i would be interested to hear your opinion. :)

keep in mind most people join this forum because they love tolkien's works, so of course you will see much more criticism of the film than of the books

there is just so much more that goes on in the books, and a lot more is left to the reader's imagination... i've always preferred the written media to tv and movies, for the most part. however, many great things have been put on the screen, and there was one instance where i liked the movie better than the book but i can't remember what it was. but it is true that one must take the movie adaptations on their own terms to fully enjoy them, and in doing so i enjoy the FOTR movie almost as much as the book. it's like meat vs meat substitution... some veggie burgers and soy nuggets are actually good as long as you don't pretend they're supposed to be real meat :D

I completely agree here. The moment you stop comparing the smaller details and take a step back you realize, as far as I'm concerned, that the book and movie aren't all that different.

The book is one of the greatest works of literary art of all time! The movie is the greatest fantasy films of all time! They are two different things carrying the same ideas!

By the way, insane as it may sound to us, many people in the "literary world" are actually very critical of LotR as a book. It hasn't had a good reputation with the literary establishment, so to speak. But as Tolkien said in his introduction to the tale, he had the the same feelings about thier work as well.

How odd. I do remember hearing that has been true in the past, but as far as I know it is now hailed as a great literary work. I have never heard that critics today look down on it. Is is possible?

When it comes to actual reader polls it always scores high, but when different literary publications post thier "Top 100", or "Best of the Century", it ussually doesn't make the cut.

The work of Tolkein, I think, is magnificent, but seeing the movie really helped ME come alive for me. I like to refer back to the book sometimes when watching the movie, though. :)

The books are the best in my opinion. The movie is great and all, but I will always love the books better.

I honestly find it hard to say which is better as one is a film and one is a movie. I mean, it is sort of like comparing oranges and apples. They are both fruit but different kinds. The books are some of the greatest, most fasinating, most well written that I have ever enjoyed. The film is definately my favorite movie and I can't wait till The Two Towers comes out, but it is hard to say which I like better. If I am in the mood to read a book, I might just pick up Tolkien, but then again if I am in the mood for a movie ... See what I mean?
