View Full Version : The Thread For Those Who Change Their Names?

Can I start this without it be considered spam or anything? I hope so.
This thread is for if people change their screen name for some reason or another they can post who they used to be here. Sound good? It just gets confusing sometimes when you think someones a newbie and theyve been here longer than you have...

But we must remember that he made it for Scotsmen.
Comparisons are odious, but God also made Hell.

And on that happy note, here are some wonderful Old English insults for you guys to use when ever someone thinks your national hero is an Irishman. (or whenever else you need a good zinnger)

Hehe. Yeah...the open parantheses were kind of funny.
But seriously...what would make someone change from something as RANDOM as STrider(Aragorn to something as RANDOM as William Wallace?
I'm confused. If he's doing it just to be an honorary Scot I think he's trying to hard.
Anamatar IV

I can find maybe 2 or 3 reasons for wallace wanting to change his name:
Remember the thread "teach me to be scottish PLEASE"? Guess who started it!!
He might have just gotten AoEII and played the william wallace learning campaign?
He might have just gotten AoEII AND wanted to be scottish. But william wallace was an aweful man! He didnt just defeat the brittish (kick his arse for that one wonks ;) ) but he creully slaughtered remaining brittish after the wars. Just rode, tralla lala la, cut the head. That might have been a bit drasticated but I think you get the idea.

And if you ever refer to England as Britain again, I'm going to wop you one as well ;) William Wallace was Scottish and when he was hung, drawn and quartered, there was no such thing as Britain
he creully slaughtered remaining brittish after the wars. Just rode, tralla lala la, cut the head. That might have been a bit drasticated but I think you get the idea. What? Stop watching Braveheart!!

I think it was kind of pointless to change your name in the first place...
I mean...people knew you by it...

Why did you want to change your name? Confustictated is more original. oh well. I'll still call you Confusticated.
YayGollum, I know you loved my old name, but for awhile now I was sorry that I did not pick a more Middle-earthish name. I also wanted something shorter. Nom means Wise, and I like that meaning, it is short, associate with Finrod, so I went with it.
PS: I was considering Morgoth but it was taken, also I could not live up to that name..:D
PS: Anamatar, for quick refference it might be a good idea if you maintain within your first post a list of the name changes posted in this thread?

Okay I am thinking about changing my name a bit. But I wanna ask the members first.
I think that for people who type out my entire screen name it could be a hassle to have the numbers at the end (IV). And its not like the numbers are really neccessary (no other Anamatar around here!) So I am thinking about changing my name from Anamatar IV to Anamatar.
Should I or should I not?
Wonko The Sane
11-06-2002, 08:52 PM
It's up to you. Most people just call you Anamatar or An anyway so it doesn't really make a bit of difference.
Anamatar IV
11-06-2002, 08:57 PM
yeah but sometimes the mods like to type out my full name.:( :(
I can be indesisive by myself!!! What I need is a descision! ;)
Wonko The Sane
11-06-2002, 09:50 PM
Don't do it. It's a waste of time and energy, if the mods want to write out your full name let them write it out. Big deal. It's just two extra letters.
YayGollum
11-06-2002, 09:56 PM
Argh! People should live with the stupid names they give themselves! oh well. I'm probably just crazy. Or maybe I'm just not as picky as you crazy people. Nothing wrong with names having nothing to do with Tolkien. Nothing wrong with Roman numerals. I'll leave you alone now.
Anamatar IV
11-06-2002, 10:00 PM
if it were up to you yay everyones screen name would be YAYGollum#2, YAYGollum#3, ....;)
Ive decided not to. BUT EVERYONE JUST IGNORE THE NUMBER THING. In fact it doesnt even have anything to do with my RP character either
YayGollum
11-06-2002, 10:16 PM
I don't get why people would want their RPG character names being the only ones used. Isn't it more fun to be original by coming up with more than one name? oh well. Maybe I'm just crazy. No, I wouldn't want everyone named after me. Then I wouldn't feel as original, even though I started it. I'm not a fan of fads. I'm a fan of being completely different. I wouldn't want to start getting people to be just like me. Creepy!
Mindy_O_Lluin
11-07-2002, 04:12 AM
WW, I do not think you should change your name back. Now that we have gotten used to your NEW name. (No sense driving the Mods crazy)
Nóm - I don't know how this is going to help me remember any better, whether you are a guy or a girl. ;)
For visually inclined people like me, maybe we should have a thread for people to make note when they change their AVATAR (Anamatar, Wonks, LL12) [don't mind me, just kidding.] :D
legoman
11-07-2002, 05:31 PM
hmm, Anamatar, its not gonna make any difference whether you do or not, cos as you said the only people who use your full name are mods so it wont confuse anyone cos the mods are gonna know who you are anyway... thats what they do. personally I wouldn't bother a lot of hassle over a coup-le of numbers that nearly no one uses, and I'm sure Wm has better things to be doing.

Firstly, one name-change is more than enough. When you registered, you should have put more thought into it. Having to make everyone re-figure out who the heck you are is very inconvenient. Changing your name BACK would be even worse, because it shows that you don't respect WM's limited time and are being indecisive. Choose a name and stick with it. Type it carefully when you register, and make sure you're sure that it is a name you can live with.

I fully support Cirs comments here, Webmaster has given us this forum, free of charge in the hope we can all enjoy it and fully participate. He does however have a multitude of other tasks unrelated to this forum that takes up much of his time, and does not need this work compounded by constant requests for name-changes, particularly from the same people. If you really must change your name even once, that should be the last time you ever need to do so.
Ancalagon
12-03-2002, 04:23 AM
Changing once is fair enough, if it is something you feel strongly about. However, changing more than once means more thought ought to have gone into the last change. Also, do you feel it is fair to ask the Webmaster to make a name change more than once for the same member when he has taken the time to change it already?

And there was no bribe at all, Wonko is right i asked politely, and the reason i changed it the first time is because some people said i needed to change it so i did, and the reason i changed it the second time is because my name made some people mad ( although i don't c y).

Calm yourself FREEDOM, I am making a general suggestion to the forum membership to take more time, and put more thought into their name when selecting it. If needs must, then ask WM to change it, which he will gladly do. However, a line ought to be drawn where members should be satisfied that they have chosen a name they can be happy with.
With regards to asking for amendments for Typo's, that is fine, I am sure Webmaster is more than happy to assist you in attaining the correct name you desire. However, there ought to be no need for changes over and above this. I do not think this is an unreasonable request.

A long time ago in a part of Middle Earth far, far away, I was Beragorn. And the more time I spent here with you groovy, far out people, the more uncomfortable I became using a cheesy rip-off name of the one, the only Aragorn, who obviously is my favorite character. I now have more respect for all things Tolkien. As you can see, I'm now Valdarmyr, though I still like that warrior king thing. And like Jackson Browne sang, "Thank You For Being A Friend."

Just PM Webmaster, and ask for him to change it. I'm sure he'll have no qualms about it.

No, I am not going to change my name to a square.
While trying to be funny (failing I might add) I cut and pasted the greek symbols for Alpha and Omega into the forum and it somehow came up as a square. Go figure. Beorn would probably know why this happened, he's into all that technical stuff.
I will be staying Rangerdave. And hopefully my next joke will work.

To All,
I've decided to "go native" and change my user name from jimzeller to baragund. For those few of you may not instantly recognize the name, (yeah, right!) Baragund was one of twelve companions to Barahir, the father of Beren who conducted a rather heroic resistance to Morgoth when Dorthonion was overrun.

I do not know who does not respect you Wonko, but I can not imagine why someone would not. As for taking you seriously, well you do joke around a lot and that is a great thing to do, but the way I see it, those jokes do not keep someone from taking you seriously.
I would daresay anyone who does not respect you or take you seriously is unaware of your kindness, sensitivity, and intelligence because they do not recognize it. That says something about them, not you.

At the "Forum Before Forums" (i.e. the original TTF, before this current one) I was known as Pontifex Cactus, and my first name at this 'newer' TTF was just Pontifex. It means 'priest' in Latin, and comes from one of the titles of the Emperor of Rome, "Pontifex Maximus".

:) Yay! Thanks! Thanks soo much! Hehe. The story for the name Wonko the Sane is simple.
In the novel "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" by Douglas Adams there is a character.
I forget his real name but it's boring and it's like Paul or something lame.
And one day he discovers that there are instructions on the back of the box of toothpicks and realises the world is insane.
SO he builds his house INSIDE OUT. And calls it the asylum. :) He builds it to house the world.
Outside the Asylum is actually the inside of his house, which is decorated like the outdoors and extends to the beach.
INSIDE the Asylum (also the real world) is the OUTSIDE of his house and has furniture and stuff attached to the walls of his house.
He asks his friends to call him Wonko the Sane. It's one of my favourite books. It's in the Hitchihiker's Guide to the Gallery series.
My brother and I call eachother Wonko.
Back when I first joined he was also a member known as simply wonko.
He may still be on the member list. :
Anyway, that's our story!
READ THE BOOK! It's BRILLIANT!

Well, I'm kinda tired of being one of the only American patriots here. Plus, most of my views are made fun of, and all my ideas are seen as trash. So, I'm Sauron, who is very cool.

This seems a good a place as any to mention that there has been another less obvious name change of mine. Basically I had a previous account "Variag of Khand". I created my current user name as a duplicate not aware of the rules. For one reason or another the VoK account became redundant. Of course having two accounts wasn't the right thing to do, so I've owned up to WM and he has merged the two. So if you go and look at old threads and I show up, but people reply to "Variag of Khand", that is why.:)

Dear TTFers One and All:
I have received special grace and dispensation from the Eldar to be transformed from Lotho_Pimple into Barliman Butterbur! Ah, that's so much better!
When I first came onto TTF I chose the Lotho username because I was absolutely sure that no one would choose "Lotho Pimple" — after all who'd want to be him???!! So I knew I wouldn't have trouble getting a name on the first go.
So I stayed with that name for the first 700 posts or so but was getting more and more unhappy.
Then I discovered to my astonishment that NO ONE had chosen "Barliman Butterbur," one of my very favorite characters! In fact many years ago, when my first wife and kids and I were into Hobbit Parties, I would always dress up as Barliman, "the worthy keeper." So if you were confused at the new name and the new avatar, now you know!
Cheers and beers,
Barley:D

Congratulations on your new name. Barliman has a good head, so I agree that it is a much better choice for you than Lotho.
It feels so much better. I can't enter the Shire by royal edict, so what better place is there than Bree?
I hear a different voice in my mind now when I read your posts! Surprising what a name change does!
It is amazing — the whole situation feels different, and fits much better.
From hobbit to man I guess... it's drastic! I suggest you consider going through a slower transition, maybe use Lothman Buttle for a time.:D

I'm having them sent to you via the Pony's new Nazgûl Air Delivery Service. Now that the War's over, we put one of them into useful service. Y'see, they didn't all "crackle, wither and go out," as was widely supposed. One escaped, the weakest and the stupidest. He and his steed were found almost dead at what was left of the Morannon, so me and a few of the lads brought them back to Bree (it was a helluva job getting that beast up on to a wain) to run airmail and such, but it was touch and go for a while: they were both pretty bad off — major burns, starvation, and so on — and both weaker than newborn kittens. It was a job to get them up to snuff again.
He and his beast were so pitifully grateful for kindly treatment it was almost disgusting. And we make both him and his beast bathe every day in the Brandywine — under Nob's supervision — to stay clean. Actually the beast is a "she," so we call them "Jack and Jill." And we make Jack wear sky blue and white to match the nature of his new duties. Pity there weren't more of them survived!
Enjoy your snacks, and tell your friends about our new service!

We're working on that. We're trying to settle it with various local governments and townships about getting through the divide between Middle-earth and the rest of Britain. Dimensional differences, y'know. You wouldn't believe the red tape and the pettiness of the bureaucrats on both sides. The whole idea just may break down.

The two blue wizards have taken a prolonged hiatus in exploring the lands to the East...
Therefore, it is only fair that I take the raiment of another Maia...
If you need a more straightforward explanation, let me know. ;)

I must admit, it took quite a while to figure out. :o
It's going to take longer to get used to..!

Yeah, it did. I was looking at your profile to try and figure out who it was. And then I looked at the forum leaders to see what supermod was missing :p.

OMG... this is so confusing.. it's as if your real-life friends suddenly change their looks immensely.
But I was wondering, who are Rog and Salgant? I just notices their names and by their number of posts I must know them... but now I don't know who they are! :(

I just saw a post by Rog myself! Imagine the shock and horror when, judging by his location, I determined him to be none other than Aule.
What is with these people?

I must say, this is becoming a most useful thread. I'd have lost my sanity otherwise..

What is with these people? :confused:Yes, the member formerly known as Aulë, formerly known as Pippin Took is now known as Rog: Greatest of the Noldo, and leader of the Hammer of Wrath!
Hehe, GW is turning out to be quite a detective ;)
But can he figure out the 3rd mystery?...

Well, Aulë also told me who Salgant is... and he said this changing of names was just 'to annoy people.' Well, he certainly did that.

I said that I changed my name to spice things up. Having the same nickname for such a long time becomes rather dull :D. And all those people who kept on saying 'Ow-ley'- you brought it on yourselves! :p

Well, actually there is NO WAY THAT ROG is the greatest of the NOldor. Besides, do you want us to call you Roggy-doggy now?

What isn't and what is greatest is of course up to the individual. Rog is of course relatively great, he is great in some aspects and not great in others. Whether or not Rog exists in the latter mythology is dubious. He name is certainly anomalous. There is now way that Mr and Mrs Rog would name their son "demon" unless they were one of those really cool rebellious, biker type Elves who were fed up of prudish Elven taboos. "Could Mr. and Mrs. Rog indeed be the hellspawn of Morgoth?" I hear you ask, to which I reply "Yes. Yes, they could".

Could we get a description of who Rog is in the mythology? I haven't heard of him and he doesn't show up in the Index of Names in the published Silmarillion but from Rog/Aule's signature and Inder's remarks, he sounds pretty cool.

Rog was an elf of Gondolin, Book of Lost Tales 2 Gondolin.
A choice passage from BOLT2, Fall of Gondolin, [Thanks Mr. Jimzeller :p for getting me into reading FOG, IT's excellent.]
Now the last of the battalions was furnished by the folk of the Hammer of Wrath, and of these came many of the best smiths and craftsmen, and all that kindred reverenced Aule the Smith more than all other Ainur. They fought with great maces like hammers, and their shields were heavy, for their arms were very strong. In older days they had been much recruited by Noldoli who escaped from the mines of Melko, and the hatred of this house for the works of that evil one and the Balrogs his demons was exceeding great. Now their leader was Rog, strongest of the Gnomes, scarce second in valour to that Galdor of the Tree. The sign of this people was the Stricken Anvil, and a hammer that smiteth sparks about it was set on their shields, and red gold and black iron was their delight. Very numerous was that battalion, nor had any amongst them a faint heart, and they won the greatest glory of all those fair houses in that struggle against doom; yet were they ill-fated, and none ever fared away from that field, but fell about Rog and vanished from the Earth; and with them much craftsmanship and skill has been lost for ever.
I'll have the most prettiest over most powerful as the greatest mostdays, thank you.

You are a shallow being Beleg. So you prefer your Paris's to your Hektor's? In a battle, what would the pretty body do? Flaunt his talents to the Orks? Get his butt whooped by Menelaos? Show everybody how well manicured his eyebrows are or how perk his butt is? A powerful soldier would kill the Orks and allow you to escape a cowardly prettyboy would ask them not to harm his beautiful face. I would choose Rog every time-why? Because since it was a 500 year war then he was pretty damn useful.

Looks like Glorfindell1187 has changed his name to Maeglin!
Hehe- I've started a trend. :D

Wow...yeah that is outrageaously wild Arvedui. :p ;)
I don't know...maybe you can rename yourself Ardi...or Arvi...or Arved...hehehe Arved...isn't that the name of a character on the 80's sitcom "The head of the Class."
Anyway, I digress....
Well, so far I have only learned to accept one name change so far...that is Aule's name change...perhaps it is because I'm so used to him changing his name now...how many name changes has it been now Roggy! 3, 4, 5? Perhaps you can just keep changing your name every month...it can be a tradition on TTF.... What name will PippinTook/Aule/Rog pick next? And we all can take bets on the character. I can see it all now! It will be so much fun!!! :p :D
