OK, I'm going to steal an idea that I got whilst perusing the oldies' guild.

This is where you can recommend anything to your fellow Tweens - music, books, meals, places to go etc etc. Use your imagination!

I'll go first. I'd like to recommend a band called Biffy Clyro. They're from Glasgow and their current album is called Blackened Sky. It is a rock masterpiece - imaginative and musical at the same time. Also, they are fantastic live (I've seen them twice at T in the Park now) where the entire band has a go at singing and different instruments. They definitely need more recognition :D

Ok, well therefor I'm gonna have to recommend the band I've mentioned a few times on here:
SACKTRICK!!!
the best band in the world.

www.sacktrick.com

they're amazing.

good idea Legolam.

Great idea Legolam!

Ok...to help this get going here are a few suggestions for my fellow tweens:

For the cynical female tween: Candice Bushell's "Sex in the City" ...a very humorous quick read. (although not recommended for those conservative types out there)

New TV stations: For all you subscribers of Digital cable or Satalite...I definately recommend you checking out the brand new station VH1 Classics.
This new station plays all the videos that we grew up with. Playing songs from the early 90's, the 80's, 70's and 60's. It is very cool...and such a nostalgia trip.
If you do not have this station...I recommend you ask your cable or satelite provider and petition to get it ...it will be well worth it!! :D
*expects to see royalty check from VH1 any minute now...*:p

You mean to make young tween women more cynical, read Candice Bushells "sex and the City"?

Elbereth

Hahahaha...yes perhaps you are right Elwood.

But seeing that I'm already a cynical female New York City Tween...I didn't really get more cynical... I don't think that is possible really...I just got a few laughs...because what she says is so true to life! A female tween will really appreciate this book! ;)

I'd like to recommend a japanese film called 'Ring' (or 'The Ring'). If you are thinking about going to see the imminent Hollywood remake, please reconsider! The original is one of the most incredible horror films I've ever seen, absolutely stunning.
And for my other cent: I would recommend the book 'Rendezvous with Rama' by Arthur Clarke. This is also being made into a film, however it is similar to LOTR in that you create an incredibly strong 'picture of the world' in your mind when you read it. An absolute classic that you can read again and again, like Middle Earth I never tire of going back to the 'world' of Rama!

I feel I should recomend the band Muse, since they are intending on trying their luck in America soon (also for anyone else who hasn't spotted their genius yet), I think they're going over when they release their new album.
They are the best band to come out of Britain for a number of years, very cool.
If you like radiohead's early stuff, the vines, my vitriol or basically any heavyish indie stuff. Then this is the ultimate band.
A three piece who have amazing rhythm from the bass and drums and the lead guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist is out of this world. Really worth looking out for!!!!!
Remember the name:

MUSE

Mixing rock, indie, classical, basically anything thats cool and making it awesome!!!! Check it out.

Legolam

Yay Muse! I love their music. I've also seen them live and the atmosphere was ELECTRIC! Folk on the other side of "the pond" should definitely check them out!

I went to Sacktrick's website by the way, very amusing! Didn't get a chance to hear any of their songs, but they seem like pretty insane people!

Here's my recommedation:

It's a film this time - Memento

It's basically about a guy who's lost his memory and the story is told in backward flashbacks. You have to concentrate as it's easy to get lost, but it's a fantastic story and a really original way of telling it. And, if you get too confused, the DVD has the story both backwards and forwards on it!

I will recommend Brighton in England as the spiritual home of tweens everywhere. It has EVERYTHING a tween could want.... clubs, bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants, retro-chic shops, 2nd hand music shops, junk shops, a beach, a pier (and a broken 2nd pier), a sea life centre, back-backers hostels that are the coolest looking you have ever seen, Sci-fi shops, basketball courts on the seafront.... its is such a great place. ITS NOT FAIR I CANT AFFORD TO LIVE HERE!!!

Oh yes... must recommend the band Morcheeba!

I'd like to recommend two Animes, and no, their not like Dragonball or Pokemon...

'princess mononoke' and 'ghost in the shell' are definitely worth of watching...

DGoeij
10-25-2002, 03:06 PM
I like music, but I always keep forgetting bands and songs.

Personally, I'd recommend 'Within Temptation' to everybody, but that's a dutch band, so I can hardly imagine anybody being able to get hold of their CD's. Maybe their latest hit, Ice Queen, is somewhere on the internet?
The german guys, Rammstein, are pretty neat too, but you have to love hard-rock for that.:D

haha, rammstein - *puts on his evil voice - 'du, du haste, du haste nicht!'
hehe, the hours of fun...

masive attack, I borrowed one of their albums last year at somepoint, it was very cool actually, the one with the insect on the front cover, it had that teardrops song on it, very famous!! I was impressed.

Anyway, I don't know if I ever heard of Massive Attack, unless in Command&Conquer, but I don't think that counts.:p

oops, sorry, it was always a kindof
'oh its 1:30 in the morning and this nicely painted black night club is about to play that amusing song where you get to shout in German, yeah, lets all imitate!!!'

I will get the words correct in future...

hehe, C&C, nevermind. lets see, they are kindof dance music but a bit more interesting and experimental. that is, they use a lot of samples and musical ideas in their songs, its very relaxing music, or at least I found it relaxing, no doubt they've done some stuff I havent heard that isn't.

Legolam
10-25-2002, 04:47 PM
My ex went to see Rammstein recently and I got a text from the gig from him, all it said was "The fire! This rocks!!"

To be honest, they're a bit too heavy for even me, but I do like Du Hast. But the song off the XXX soundtrack is bad!

LadyGaladriel
10-26-2002, 12:05 PM
agh agh I hate Ramenstien with a passion.

They just shout out radomn German words and have like a heavy beat in the background. that to me isn't proper music but just a waste of time.

I hate Slipknot too.

Same, LadyGaladriel. It's like pop music for heavy rock. Blech :(

Ramagna
10-26-2002, 02:49 PM
Massive attack's music is calles trip hop, I think...

Teardrop I love the most, but Blue Lines is on e of my favourites as well...

I think the Insect Album is called Mezzanine...

To Rammstein: Although I don't like them very much, they do not only shout out random german words, but I don't really know why they're so popular in the US...

There are better bands in Germany, like the good old scorpions, for example... ;)

I don't know anything about those Scorpions, but Rammstein's use of the german language is a lot better than the english of today's boys bands:D It's hardly random also, but I think I'm lucky enough to live next to their home-country. My german is probably somewhat better.:) And I prefer a heavy beat over whining little fellows and everlasting guitar-riffs.

DGoeij

Mit, Nach, Bei, Seit, Von, Zu, Ausser, Aus. There was something with these words, I even used to know what.:D
Oh and this one is used sometimes by the waterscouts I know, usually when referring to something that fell overboard. :p
Verd*mmt noch mal! Was machts du? Das ist doch keiner U-boot, du *rschloch!

The more decent german I used last summer. Me and my scoutgroup were the first foreign group to have ever visited a Scouts campsite near Stuttgart.:)
The idea of a band using the flute in a rock-song is something I usually can appreciate. This group Within Temptation have a singer that sings like those in Celtic Myst and Enya stuff (high, but strong) together with rock-music. The contrast between the two is really cool.

That was so funny! (not meant mean ;) )

Give me more! (it's only fair, cause I make you laugh with my silly english... )

but it'S not 'keiner U-boot', it's 'kein U-boot'

and I don't understand the joke in it... :p

Is scout the same as 'pfadfinder' ???

P.S.: anyone knows the 'blind guardians' ?
they make rock music with tolkien text sometimes...

Quatsch! If your english is silly, then mine is stupid.:) And I think I'll take your word for it that is 'kein', but 'keiner' sounds better when you shout it, with the harsh r in it. It was funny when the TV-serie Das Boot was broadcasted, last year.
Yes, scout means pfadfinder. I've been one for about seven years now.

So I got to be careful...

No, I would have liked to be one myself, but down here in little Germany, there aren't many left of your clan... ;)

My next recommendation is - rugby!

More exactly, going to see your national team play live! I saw Scotland play Romania yesterday (my 8th international rugby game) and it was fantastic! Even better, I took 4 rugby novices who were all very skeptical in their own way about going to a rugby match but all thoroughly enjoyed it once they got there. My football loving friend (who had to be persuaded by dragging him all the way to Murrayfield) was even jumping up and down in his seat when the first try went over  .

So I heartily recommend going to an international rugby match, preferably a Scotland game (I'll even take you!) :D

I dunno its just not football.
You can't beat football, I've tried many sports but nothing even compares with it.

I feel like that guy off catchphrase... Rugby - 'its good but its not right'

DGoeij
11-12-2002, 01:19 PM
I like Rugby. I like it much better then football. At least they are allowed to crash into their opponent. And the unfortunate opponent will not make a big thing over it, like falling over, screaming like he has been shot and grabbing his head (because you might have hit his ankle, slightly).

Legolam
11-12-2002, 01:47 PM
I totally agree with DGoeij. Rugby may be a little stop-start, but when it gets going, you really can't beat the atmosphere and excitement.

legoman
11-12-2002, 04:53 PM
I'm not so sure, I come from close to hull, which is a pretty big rugby city, it has two rugby teams in the league, which are quite high up, and yet the football drags in way more fans even though it is very low in the football table compared to the rugby teams, it has a way better atmosphere than either rugby team except perhaps in a local derby between the two. But still the football derby's with York and Scunthorpe are amazing to be at.
But then Hull football fans have a reputation for being very dedicated supporters so maybe its not the same everywhere else.

...I know you have changed the subject a biiiiiit, but... Rammstein. Their incessant references to insects as the zerbrechlichkeit, the fragility, and at the same time the beauty of something so small... the life of love being threatened by briefness... in contrast with a though, somewhat raw perception...

If you didn't have enough yet, may I recommend you to listen to Sobrinus and their personal stylistic devices? It can appear to be difficult in case you don't speak Spanish, but also the voice of Sidney is one of their key points.
As for music being sung in English, the pleasant maturity of a Norwegian youngster called Sondre Lerche. Nice clip.

Time for a new recommendation from your Scottish friend methinks!

Live rock gigs
Yes, they rock. Specifically, Idlewild doing a home gig in Edinburgh two nights ago but, if you didn't make it, don't despair. Go to a live concert. Now. I guarantee, even if you've never been before, there's something about the hot, sweaty, beer throwing crowds that will live with you forever afterwards. Hi! I haven't read this whole thread so if I'm out of place, forgive.

Are we recommending things that are good? Seems like there is talk of music happening here so I'll add my 2pennies to the convo...
-Musical Instrument Digital Interface!

Or MIDI, has been in computers for 20 years. People make music with it....if you are into making sounds then I would recommend investigating MIDI today!

legoman
03-01-2003, 05:18 PM
Haha, yeah you pretty much got the hang of it GP, just state anything you know of that you think other tweens would benefit from knowing.

haha, blooming Midi, my parents bought an atari ST when I was quite small intending to get midi on it and o loads of music stuf, but with them being very uneducated in the ways of computing (even though my dad was 'computer manager' at his work - I don't get how!!! hoho) they didn't get anything else, so now I have the aforementioned atari and have found a friend at uni who has been producing music on his for about 10 year. Damn midi. Still, I'll get there... hehe

TheFool
03-01-2003, 10:38 PM
I have one ancient, crooked, sorry-looking grey MIDI lead; It plugs into a little sequencer I have and I use it for quickly programming hi-hat tracks - - that's the extent of my MIDI knowledge, 'click click click click' :D :o Can get some weird noises out of that old sequencer, like playing the organ sound at 8 octaves above normal, sounds like an intergalactic police siren or something:cool:

greypilgrim
03-03-2003, 06:14 AM
Musical Instrument Digital Interface is not needed for music-making on a computer. Music is made alot of different ways. Singers just plug in to a little CD recorder with a good mic and can record a whole album, or add some guitar to make the songs better. A dude I work with made a whole CD at some studio playing drums and singing, his friend played guitar tracks. It sounded sweet. Now we're all making stuff on our own.

OK...I'm really excited about music right now. Hence the 80's musical revolution.

There are wierd people at my work...Dudes, I recommend if you get any crazy messages from unknown people to ignore them! I got a few. My pic was a subliminal ad for some sales I think!

I gotta get that 1-800 # advertisement outta there! I'm scared!

greypilgrim
03-03-2003, 08:31 AM
It's gone. OK, somebody recommend a place where I can get a cool avatar, preferably something about grey wizards. The one I have is old already...where can I get a new one?

I can recommend anything about making music...it's my job.

So if you own a computer and can play anything live...MIDI.(drums/guitar/synth/singing/anything)...
Ask me about what it takes to make your own CD. Software nowadays has changed the music industry! Anyone can be a 1-man-band! (Think Trent Reznor...He's one!) Do you like music?

I've always been into making music and am looking into all of this myself. I definately spend time mixing music on a comp./keyboard when the sounds hit me. All I gotta do then is make the sounds happen....viola! :D You should hear the CD's they play at work!

Strange!

legoman
03-03-2003, 12:28 PM
Hmm, you should hear the CDs I play at home, hehe.

If you want help on an Avatar there used to be a thread in Member announcements, but I think there might be one in stuff and bother now. People can make some cool ones if you ask nicely. Anamatar is pretty good.

Dagnabit, hey legolam, guess what I saw advertised when i walked past the local music venue last night, yup, on Saturday Billy Clyro played at the charlotte and I didn't know they were playing till sunday, damn damn damn. Nevermind. Still, the bluetones are coming on 20th, gotta see them! and pitchshifter are coming - not sure whether to go to that, I might.

Yeah, I've been thinking of looking at that.

hmmm, I dunno, I used to play my friends game of warhammer, its just that the game was a bit dull. I loved the painting of figures and making of battle fields and stuff, its just the game itself seemed a little tame, you know, all out war condensed to thrwoing dice. I know its the same in risk, but the idea of warhammer with specially made and painted pieces looked interesting and was just a bit of a let down.
Problem is I can't think of a better way to do it.

Fourth Level of Hell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just before the river Styx is the Fourth Level of Hell. Here, the prodigal and the avaricious suffer their punishment, as they roll weights back and forth against one another. You will share eternal damnation with others who either wasted and lived greedily and insatiably, or who stockpiled their fortunes, hoarding everything and sharing nothing. Plutus, the wolf-like demon of wealth, dwells here.

legoman
05-06-2003, 02:08 PM
Level 1 - Limbo

Charon ushers you across the river Acheron, and you find yourself upon the brink of grief's abysmal valley. You are in Limbo, a place of sorrow without torment. You encounter a seven-walled castle, and within those walls you find rolling fresh meadows illuminated by the light of reason, whereabout many shades dwell. These are the virtuous pagans, the great philosophers and authors, unbaptised children, and others unfit to enter the kingdom of heaven. You share company with Caesar, Homer, Virgil, Socrates, and Aristotle. There is no punishment here, and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet sad.

Sounds kinda like life doesn't it... maybe its all true...

I've never clicked no and false that many times before in my life! How depressing.

Why am I at the Seventh Level?
I'm not evil. :(

Seventh Level of Hell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guarded by the Minotaur, who snarls in fury, and encircled within the river Phlegethon, filled with boiling blood, is the Seventh Level of Hell. The violent, the assasins, the tyrants, and the war-mongers lament their pitiless mischiefs in the river, while centaurs armed with bows and arrows shoot those who try to escape their punishment. The stench here is overpowering. This level is also home to the wood of the suicides- stunted and gnarled trees with twisting branches and poisoned fruit. At the time of final judgement, their bodies will hang from their branches. In those branches the Harpies, foul birdlike creatures with human faces, make their nests. Beyond the wood is scorching sand where those who committed violence against God and nature are showered with flakes of fire that rain down against their naked bodies. Blasphemers and sodomites writhe in pain, their tongues more loosed to lamentation, and out of their eyes gushes forth their woe. Usurers, who followed neither nature nor art, also share company in the Seventh Level.

Rankings:

Level Who are sent there? Score
Purgatory Repenting Believers Low
Level 1 - Limbo Virtuous Non-Believers Very Low
Level 2 Lustful High
Level 3 Gluttonous High
Level 4 Prodigal and Avaricious Moderate
Level 5 Wrathful and Gloomy Moderate
Level 6 - The City of Dis Heretics Very Low
Level 7 Violent Very High
Level 8- the Malebolge Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers Very High
Level 9 - Cocytus Treacherous Moderate

Sixth Level of Hell - The City of Dis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You approach Satan's wretched city where you behold a wide plain surrounded by iron walls. Before you are fields full of distress and torment terrible. Burning tombs are littered about the landscape. Inside these flaming sepulchers suffer the heretics, failing to believe in God and the afterlife, who make themselves audible by doleful sighs. You will join the wicked that lie here, and will be offered no respite. The three infernal Furies stained with blood, with limbs of women and hair of serpents, dwell in this circle of Hell.

That means I've been without properly clean clothes for well over a month (go on, make the jokes!) and I'm fed up of handwashing. Yesterday we were meant to have the new one delivered, but the delivery men said that we weren't in, which was blatantly untrue because I skived a whole day of Uni (second day of term) to stay in.

So, the moral of the story is that I'm pining for a washing machine. That's all. :(

Tsk, tsk.
Did Shaun break it? lol.

The delivery man saw that he had to haul your washing machine up the stairs of Cirith Ungol to get to your flat, and decided to give it a miss!:D

Tell him to leave it at the bottom and get Shaun to carry it up!;)

Snaga! That's MEAN! :) You should skive off being EVIL for a day and drive up there and help Shaun carry it up those stairs. ;)

Snaga's right actually, my stairs to my flat are actually evil and should be eliminated. Although that would mean that I couldn't get into my flat. Hmmmm.....

You could fill up the entire street, so your flat would be at ground level.

Or take your dirty clothes to the washing machine shop.

Do what I do when I'm away from home: sned all the dirty clothes off to your parents place. :)
That's what mums are for ;)

And if they live far away- mail it to them!! :D

Legolam
09-11-2003, 12:57 PM
I would send it to them, but they've been away in France for the last week. Plus, they annoy me when I speak to them so I'd rather not for a while ;)

Hehe...annoying parents are something that I DON'T recommend. :)

Hmm...Legolam, it sounds like you need an elevator in your building...what if somebody in a wheelchair wants to live there?

Aulë
09-13-2003, 10:38 AM
Yeah,
Just think- if you had a skiing accident, and had to use a wheelchair for a couple of months.
You'd have to live in a box outside your house. ;)

Whoa...that'd be AWFUL! I'm sure she has friends she could stay with if something like that happened...

When I was on a mountaineering weekend in March I pulled a thigh muscle and couldn't go down stairs for a few days. Up was fine, but getting out of my flat was a tad difficult. :D

Whoa...that's AWFUL! That building REALLY should be wheelchair accessible.

Btw, for anyone who wants to dye their hair red I recommend Clairol Natural blah blah blah in "Burmese Ruby" SOOO fun! :)

I'm currently reading an outstanding and inspiration book that is a must read if you are young and have a desire to get ahead in the world.

The book is called: "Secrets of the Young & Successful ...How to Get Everything You Want Without Waiting a Lifetime"
by Jennifer Kushell w/ Scott M. Kaufman

This book is amazing! It has been such an inspiration to me and it has given me so much motivation to get out of the place that I am in and really make something of my life. In fact this book has been so inspirational, that I am now taking the steps toward building my own company.

If you have to read one business book...this is the book to read!

Does it also infrom you about what you might want?:)

Elbereth

Not really, but it does give you the insight and knowledge of what to do when you do know what you want...or think you may know what you want.

It also gives you the resources of where to look to best research any given topic so that you will be able to figure out what your own "Grand Plan" is all about.

If you want to be successful period....this is the book to read.

Succes is nice, but I have no idea what I wish to be successfull at. It's not likely this political science student is going to make the world a better place, but I wonder if I'll be able to settle for less.

OK. by a strange coincidence involving the word 'eyeball' (!) I found this band the other day, called Sleep Station. They have a free EP to download at www.voncosel.com (http://www.voncosel.com). Read the story first then listen to the songs - it could have turned out like death metal but instead sounds a bit like Gomez! What can I say, my favourite is 'Sacred Heart' and I ordered all their albums. Should appeal to acoustic guitarists, romantics and mad scientists!

Have a good Christmas all.

This might not make much sense to everyone, but it's hilarious if you know what a Ned is (a really scummy person who can't talk, write or behave properly). You'll get the idea. Oh, and Glasgow's Scotland's biggest city and renowned for its Ned culture.

Sorry, but I'm on a bit of a role with websites these days! Here's one my boyfriend found:

www.rupissed.com

It's an online breathaliser - great for calculating if you're still over the driving limit the next morning!

I've just spent over an hour downloading 50 wallpapers for my computer (all 15+MB of it) from the site below. It's called Deviant Art and is absolutely fantastic and addictive! No longer shall your desktop be boring and monochrome! For you shall download from this site, and it shall be beautiful!!

www.deviantart.com

PS Some of the pics show semi-naked people (but no porn), just to warn you if you are of a nervous disposition :p . Of course, maybe you're looking for something like that ... ;)

50 wallpapers?????????????
Isn't that a tad extreme? That's like 5 years worth of wallpapers all at once!
There must be something strange in the water in Scottieland...

It's a shame that most of the decent wallpapers there don't work though.

Oh...I have a suggestion for all you tweens!

I just recently tried a new wine that is really great! In fact...I'm drinking it now as I type. (don't worry...it is only my first glass so I am completely sober ;) )

The wine is: Francis Coppola, Bianco

A combination of three types of fine California white wines. Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Savignon Blanc.

and if wines are not your forte...then I suggest you try a great Belgian beer...called: Duvel (I just recently got a taste of this beer and fell in love!)

PS....if you are from America and are under 21...please disregard, as I do not want to be responsible for promoting underage drinking ;)

Well I never had Australian beer before...but I have had Australian wine and I do agree that it is very good. Unfortunately though, I can never remember the name of foreign wines after I have drank it. Hmmm...perhaps I should write down the names next time....either that or drink less...hehe ;)

I recommend that you guys go and see Troy! It's fantastic! :D :D
I also recommend that you read The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. A fantastic series that is in the same league as Tolkien's work. I've heard that it tapers off near the end of the series, but I'm up to Book 6 and it's still very good. Be prepared to forget any other books for a whilt though- it's a 12 book series (book 11 is released next Feb), WITH a prequel! And the books aren't short either- all at least 850 pages long.
