Hey Y'all,
I have been studying Sindarin on that "Ardalamion" Tolkien language site. I have about learned how to read and pronounce it, but where can I find a real Sindarin vocabulary or English/Sindarin--Sindarin/English dictionary? I went to that one thread where they guy had a link to a list of langauge stuff. I went to the "Sindarin/English dictionary link. but every thing I clicked on there a page would pop up that was in French and all I could get out of it was "Error". Any help or tips would be appreciated.
Namar,
Dave

I thought Ardalambion had a whole bunch of pages with just words, a Corpus or soemthing like that..
Oh, sorry: that was only for Quenya.. :(
I personally prefer Quenya to Sindarin.

The dictionary you refer to is under construction (and has been for some time), but IMO is the best on the net (that I know of anyway), and the only one I recommend ~ aside from what generally can be found at Helge's site.

I guess we need to be patient with it :)

Actuall you ae correct. Ardalamion does indeed have a section on Quenya and one on Sindarin too. The Quenya has a link to click on for taking a Quenya course, but the Sindarin doesn't. But the Sindarin one is where I have been studying. It does have a Corpus and other things, grammer and structure, etc., but I was wondering about an in depth vocabulary or dictionary. I might have over looked a link or something.
Thanks,
Dave

Hello and thanks. Those Quenya/English dictionaries are neat and is more or less what I am looking for, but I prefer Sindarin rather than Quenya. I found one site and when I went there it said it was completed but what ever I clicked on some page popped up that was all in French with the only word I knew for sure what it meant was French for "Error". So I reckon that site was not complete after all. Thanks though.
By the way, since your name is ElvishArcher are you by chance into archery or Elven Archers? I am. I am fair with a recurve or longbow. I saw on this one site that had all the repro weapons from LOTR listed, and they had Legolas' bow. It was neat. The add said it was a real, functional, 60l# custom made bow made by a bowyer. it is patterned after the first one that Legolas carries in the movie. Remember he got another one from the Elves of Lothlorian that was longer and stronger than the one he had at first. Anyway, I would love to get my hands on that bow. Most of the swords are made of stainless, etc, and are more for hanging on a wall, although you could fight with them as long as you did not really hit anything hard with them. But they offered a true "Combat Ready" copy of the Sword of the Ranger, Aragorn's sword before he got re-forged "Narsil", done by the Elves. The add said it is Tempered, hardened spring steel. I bet you could really fight with that one. On a couple of other threads a week or so ago, in response to someone who said it was not Legolas' bow, I posted pics of Legolas with his bow, and on another thread pics of the repro. They looked identical to me.
Namarië,
Dave

Well well! Three archers on the same thread!! :D
I also practice archery, have done for one year now. I shoot with a recurve too (as beginners do), and I don't know what the correct measurements are in the US, but my bow is 28lbs. I mean to get a stronger one though.. :)

Great! I shoot with a 30 lbs. Recurve. Perhaps we could start an Archers Guild where we trade information (if one doesnot already exist).

Hey y'all,
Those licensed LOTR repro weapons and all are on a variety of sites. But here is the page with the LOTR weapons including the bow and arrows. http://www.thelordoftherings.com/shop/swords/.
Look at bottom of list of swords, etc, and you will see "ELvish Bow and Arrows". Click on that. It is no mere wall-hanger. You will see the add says it is a true, functional bow made by a real custom bowyer and can be had in poundage from 45 to 60. It is going for around $400.00, which is the average price for a custom made traditional bow these days. I would like to have it. I would also like to have the other bow that Legolas carries in the movie, his gift from Lothlorien. The book says it was longer and more powerrful than the one he brought out of Rivendale. Speaking of bows, I have an old recurve and a new longbow, both 60# @ 28". My sons, 9 and 12, have lesser bows of course. Here lately we have been putting up an old purple and black busted basketball on top of our target and pretending it is an Orc's head peeping over a ledge or something at us. I know that sounds silly, but when you pop it good at about 20 yards or so that is a great feeling.

Dave

Anyhoo how fluent are people here in Sindarin? It's my fav. Elven tongue even though am not that good at it!
Do people here know how to write in the Tengwar? That is the one thing am quite good at:D Which mode do people prefer?

You might want to check out some of the different threads on some of the different forums on this site, because there has been a lot of talk of Elven languages. Unfortunately they have no board dedicated to just Tolkien languages as some sites do, so discussions of this are scattered around, but usually on the Hall of Fire board. Some like Quenya and some Sindarin. One guy said he could speak Sindarin almost fluently and was going to begin studying Tengwar script. I my self like Sindarin. Your name, Galadhwen in Sindarin would be pronounced "Galathwen", the "th" being spoken like the "th" in "the" or "that", not like in "moth".
Go to www.ardalambion.com/. That is a fantastic site with all sorts of info on Tolkien languages. With some useful study stuff on Quenya and Sindarin.
Namar (Farewell in Sindarin),
Dave

It's namar in Sindarin? Wow, that's really close to the Quenya equivalent! (namarië) I didn't know that, thanks. :)
Um, yes I can write the Tengwar fluently. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by Mode (I expect you mean either the Mode of Beleriand or the Mode of Fëanor, but I'm not really caught up on the terms :)) But as for the languages, I have no time anymore, and it would require more patience and devotion than I can spare.. :)

Mae govannen to the twain of you!
Cheers both, I know dh is to be pronounced th but how is Caradhras meant to be pronounced? in the Appendix in ROTK Tolkien states that it is from Caran + rass and should be spoken so but in the film where they get all the rest of the elvish right it seems, you have Gandalf saying Carathras and Saruman saying Carad hras! Which is true?
Yea Ardalambion's a great site, I don't knoww how much paper I've used now printing out the Sin. Article but it's been well read!
By mode I did mean Beleriand, Feanor, Third Age etc. I keep getting them mixed up! Don't give up on the languages Lantarion I have to make time to read them my friends at school think am mad as I read up on them in form!:D
Hey Dave didn't Tolkien say th was the other way round soft as in "these" for dh and harsh as in "that" for th:confused:
I heard there was going to be a Guild of Linguists a while back do you know anything about it cause I can't find it

Can you clear up another pronounciation please?
The Three Rings are they Quinya or Sindarin propnounciation? ie.
Nenya or Nenua etc. Cheers!

The Three Elven Rings' names are Quenya.

Nenya = nen-ya (not that hard) :)
Narya = nar-ya (with rolling 'r')
Vilya = vil-ya (not with an 'l' like in 'villa'; less pronounced)

Heh, a funny thing about the word Vilya. In Finnish, the word vilja, meaning wheat, is pronounced in the exact same way! :D

Cheers Lantarion:) I just wanted to check because I didn't think "nenua" sounded quite right!:D
