So, what's bothering everyone today? I'm currently trying to make my third ever website on the impacts of the Human Genome Project, hence being on the computer a lot over the next few hours  Sometimes I think I'm permanently attached to this computer :D

I'm attached to 'my' computer a lot too. If I'm not surfing TTF, I'm playing games or typing stuff for university (at least trying to). Currently I'm using one of the computers at university. At home I use my little borthers 'old' pc. He's spending more money on hardware than I am on Tolkien stuff.:D

I'm not sure I should say again, it might look like I'm showing off about getting them - which I'm not.
well if any moderators read this, I'm posting it cos I was asked, and therefor not really doing anything wrong...
erm... yeah, I was naughty, in a conversation about spamming I said something to the effect of 'thats not spamming, thats more like processed pork products, this is spamming' not very clever when you think about it, and Grond didn't find it all that funny... well I did deserve that one, no arguements here.

There was a craze when I grew up for capturing frogs and pumping them up with a bicycle pump to get them to explode. Thats not nice is it? I never did that. I think its the same sorts of people who graduate onto cow-tipping. Not nice either. Anyone want to admit to such things so this orc can frown at you (like this  ).
By the way Wonks, you will not find any orcs I know of hanging out in ponds. Remember: Gollum had the pond all to himself, and the orcs lived in the dry bit.:)

That's because you crazy orcs are afraid of water. Just wait until I get you drunk! Then we'll see who wants to hide in a pond! ;)
The blowing up frogs with bicycle pumps wasn't big when I was a kid but feeding alka-seltzer to seagulls was. We have a lot of seagulls cause it's Seattle and Seattle's on the water and kids in my elementary and middle school used to go down to the pier and they'd feed the alka-seltzer to the seagulls. They'd get all full of gas and since birds can't burp they'd explode. Not cool if you ask me.

That's easy. I can combine the two in the story wich ended with me having a girlfriend.
Imagine a group of scouts (yes, the pfadfinder) at Tween age, going off for a long weekend. There're about twelve of us, four guys organized the whole thing, the others will have to suffer the consequences. (Men are very good at organizing a weekend like this, with the exception of the groceries)
Some of us have known eachtother for over four years, others recently joined the group. The whole idea of the weekend was to have fun and to get to know eachother in the meantime. So, the non-organizational members are split up in two teams, and told to be at the campsite at 9:00 in the morning. At the meeting point, they tell us we are not going to stay here, but somewhere else. They will not tell us where. They do tell every team to travel to a certain town in the neighbourhood and to make a picture of the church (as evidence we actually went there). Then we have to send an sms to recieve a new destination.
My team (including the girl that will end up as my new girlfriend) travels on foot, by bus and train and even hitchhikes part of the way. Our final destination is 50 km south of the initial gathering, in the middle of the woods (which explains the walking). Thank the lord diner has been prepared and the beer is almost cold and tents are set up. So we have a weekend of activities, some on the campsite, some away. The second night we go out, drink to much, have fun in annoying the designated drivers (who decide to take me, the girl mentioned above and another not overly sober girl back in the last car, meaning we have to wait half an hour at a bus-stop at 2 am. What did I say, what!? )
The next night is even more fun. We have a camp-fire set up, it even stays dry and my best friend decides to dump his girlfriend through the use of his mobile phone. This because he heard, just that evening, she cheated on him (how? long story, involving women and gossip).
How we ended up at the camp-entrance I'm not sure, but there I'm a witness to the whole conversation. He also calls her sister etc. and things are taking to much time. I decide to go and get some extra beer (It's still a very pleasent summer evening). At the campfire my going-to-be-girlfriend complaines it's getting awfully boring there. Some others have left entirely (visiting other groups, no doubt) and she is stuck with the most silent fellows in our group. Not that I give a darn thing, I'm going where the action is.:D
After an hour or so, my friend has blown enough steam to return to the campfire, which is mostly abandoned. Most people have gone to bed, others just returned. Happens to be I'm the last non-smoker around, but still I end up with a lighted coffin nail in my hand. We smoke, drink some more and then put the fire out (don't ask how) and head for our sleeping bags. I manage not to wake up everybody in my tent, except one, yes, her..........
The next morning I'm having trouble deciding what happened, why and how to deal with it (ok, it was just kissing, but a lot of it too and I'm not a guy to kiss someone just like that:o ). The following week we call eachother, meet again, still remain confused and finally two weeks after the ' incident', we decide to give it a go. We are together for two and a half years now, and still in love. Imagine that.:)

Well, it is funnier when I'm able to tell it. Writing it down takes away much of the fun. Like my grilfriends interruptions, non-verbal communication and a lot more side-steps. And I haven't even mentioned questions asked by the audience. Oh well. *shrug*

I used to wear red socks a lot. I am usually a bit boring when it comes to socks, but I think socks is one area where being boring is probably ok. I mean this guy once dissed me for wearing boring black socks and I was like, 'my socks are boring, but your whole life is... please go away swiftly' or something equally convivial. The fact that that was what he wanted to talk to me about summed him up pretty much.:( OK... so this is all a bit random and I dont know why that still sticks in my head after about 10 years. I mean dis me over something important and I can live with that. But sock colour???

To snog is to make out. I used "pop him one" in the sense that I'd punch him. It can also mean to shoot someone.

My earliest memory is of my sister's birth and she was born when I was two and a half... I remember waking up and going to see what my parents were doing and being really disturbed to find the bed made and them gone... then wondering into the living room and finding grandma. Then I remember playing legos with my brother while Grandma talked on the phone...
I'm not a tween though... I'm just on here by invitation.

Well, the uniform I would be wearing and the last time I saw a broomstick during camp, I'm pretty sure it was used to poke in fire. Later on it was just burned, of course.
It is amazing how long you can get away with being insane without people realising it. I had to confront my colleagues (when I still was a humble dishwasher, years ago), with my theory on the Telletubbies, which are in fact aliens who will qonquer the world in 2040.

I have the end of term paper coming up for writing class. Has to be my opinion on something... he gave me the vague topic of "It has to be something to do with privacy unless you have something else really really good in mind."
True to form I switched topics six or seven times before finally hitting on this one the day my outline was due... so I wrote the outline waiting for him to get to class. Thankfully, it is my favorite sort of topic and I was able to do it. It is still coming fairly smooth, but it's due in rough draft Monday and final draft Wednesday. I can get it finished but what about revising and editing and reading it through slowly and distancing myself...
So I'm throwing in a historical reference, a few similes and metaphores, and treys... anything I know my Prof is especially fond of... Nothing better to do.
I think I'll skip the party, personally. It would be quite a drive... over one continent and an ocean.

Legoman, Hogmanay (or "hogblogormonannany" as apparently it's referred to in Lancashire) is New Year's Eve. It's bigger than Christmas as a celebration up here really, and Edinburgh has the biggest Hogmanay party in the world. It's ranked in the top ten best world festivals, and 100,000 people converge on the main street in the city for music, fireworks, drinking, dancing and hugging policemen. It's brilliant! :D
I was being serious about inviting people here by the way, our flat sleeps 26 (26 very very friendly people!! Or they are by the end of their stay anyway!). Come and experience the Scottish way of celebrating (quite unlike anything else I fear!)

Have any of you Brits seen the news today?? A huge fire has ripped through the centre of the main pubbing and clubbing area of Edinburgh, gutting premises and Uni flats. It's pretty bad. My flatmate was down there last night and phoned me at 3am to make sure that I was OK (although I live about 10mins away). There's still tons of smoke and debris about and the whole south side of the city smells faintly of burning. All my favourite places to go out are down there, and quite a few of my friends have been evacuated, so it's pretty bad
Go here for more info: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/2555023.stm
EDIT: BTW, see where it says "Chambers Street" on the map on the website? I live just south of the "t" of "Street", about 2 streets away from the edge of where they say the roads are closed. And I didn't know anything about it last night!

The fire's not quite as bad as we first thought. All the roads are still cut off (causing chaos this morning!) but my friend's flat's OK, if a little smokey. The fire's still burning though, and they think it'll burn for a couple days more. A lot of buildings have been damaged, including the building we all get our exams in (yay!) and four clubs have been completely burnt to the ground.
It shouldn't mess up Hogmanay too much, but the Cowgate and all its pubs and clubs is gonna be out of action for a good couple of weeks, which sucks for end of term celebrations :( Anyway, I guess the good thing is that no-one was hurt and that the main part of the Old Town is safe

no-one was hurt? good, thats a hefty fire to have no injurues, well done all in edinburgh. I saw it had happened but I hate the news its too depressing and important things like that aren't very well publised cos we have to all read about cherie blairs weird showers and other such rubbish that I skip in the paper. Hi everyone!
Just heard about the fire yesterday when I went on the BBC website. So glad no one was hurt. i hope the city wasn't too badly damaged either. Are we all set for our trip there?
Oh and lego, you think he British mediais bad, you should see the American one. the BBC is the Shakespeare of news bullitens in comparison! I will never diss British telly ever again afte being over here, i tell you! EastEnders is better written and better acted than the most serious of detective series over here. I kid you not. And Coronation Street is funnier than most of the comedies! I particially want to tape some of this stuff just to bring it over and laugh!

To the fire near legolams home:
It's really sad to see people loose their homes, of fire or something else...
Here in Germany, in the east of the country, a lot lost their homes cause of the flood (right spelled?) that happened there, but still they had some luck as they are living in a rich country...
Everytime I am in a bad mood, I try to think about the people, that have no such good life as I have, that suffer the consequences of war, hunger and else, and that makes me sometimes ashamed of myself, and that there's still no real justice in the world...
Legolam
12-10-2002, 01:53 PM
I suppose thankfully there weren't a lot of homes round there, just commercial businesses. It's lucky it didn't start later because it was a Saturday night and there are probably around 15,000 people go out in that area at the weekend. They're going to pull down the most badly burnt buildings (all the history is just going, which is sad) and the rebuilding is going to take months. One of the buildings that was destroyed was the world renowned artificial intelligence department, so that's a big blow to the uni.
However, the trip's still going ahead!! A little fire won't stop us partying! :D

Oooh, I want to see the pic of Snaga dancing! He's told me he's a famously bad dancer!
Snaga
01-07-2003, 06:20 PM
A picture will tell you nothing about the quality of my dancing. Unless you can see a circle of people looking at me, pointing, and laughing their a$$es of at me.
Normally when I am dancing, the need to coordinate the movements of all four limbs at the same time is sufficiently taxing so that I am oblivious to the reactions of those about me. So for all I know, they might be admiring my dancing.
I don't think I am 'famously' bad. No TV documentary appearences in 'When Dancing Gets Nasty!' so far.

all very odd...
anyone know how to get the bonus stuff off the FotR sound track? It's not working for me.
Wonko The Sane
01-11-2003, 01:34 AM
You mean the enhanced CD?
Yes.
Step 1) Insert CD into CD ROM drive
Step 2) Hit "Bonus Material" when the screen comes up
Step 3) Enjoy.
Snaga's right! I COULD be a tech-support guru!
Oh, and Elgee, if you're doing it on the computer you sometimes need random drivers for the things to run on.
You might not have them.
I don't have the soundtrack but on enhanced CDs the bonus stuff should just come up automatically.
If it doesn't click on your CD ROM drive directory and look at the subfolders...and you might be able to run the programs from there.
Just a thought.
I might be horribly wrong in which case a thwacking would be considered appropriate.

Don't you love it when a machine isn't functioning as it should? Especially computers. Other machines at least go 'boink' or start smoking or start flashing lights with texts like: 'Paper Jam'. Computers tend to ignore you when they decide you have to have done something wrong and it couldn't be their fault.
Try holding it outside the window on the 34th floor of a building and threathen to let go. Usually they start operating again in no time.

how about real-life table football where you stand at either side of the room (Legolam, you've got a big main room so this should work) then you hold onto a prepositioned pole (horizontal pole that is)and you place a ball at your feet, do a backwards flip to kick it and you can only move from side to side, whoever hits the opposite wall most wins.

I never really understood the dating stuff, whether it was when foreign pals told me, in films or magazines. We don't have such a 'tradition', perhaps in Spain. There are the usual "rollos" in your teens, which can be intrepeden within a large range of meanings, from just snogging/kissing to real one night stands. Then going out. It could be skipping the date stage, I don't know. There are people for everything.

I'm probably the only one here in for Abstinance before Marriage and courtship stuff... he he...

I used to date a few times in college and off and on since then. Generally I complain about it and say that dating is useless and worthy of great loathing, but the reality is...Dating is necessary.
Even courtship is a form of dating. The fact is Americans make such a big deal out of the word "date". It is really just going out and spending time with someone you really like, who you just happen to have a mutual attraction to. (well at least that is my definition). Kissing and holding hands are not a requirement...just a bonus.
A date is really just a formal way of getting to know someone. And when you ask someone out on a date, you are just telling them that you are really interested in them and want to get to know them better. That is all.
What is evil about it...is the feelings that are associated with the word "date": nervousness, anxiety, fear, doubt, insecurity
We've all experienced it...and many do not feel that it is worth the pain.
I am not one of those people however. I like dating and would do it more often if I could. However, I have never been the kind of girl comfortable in intiating the "date"...so I just try to wait patiently for the right guy to ask me. (even if my patience, or lack thereof gets the best of me).
But ultimately, I recommend dating.

Right...
And I highly recommend meeting someone on the internet, not really actually dating, and then getting engaged. ;)

Wonks: Sure!:)
Elbereth: A date is evil, because it's a bad situation. Two strangers hooking up, maybe eating in front of each other, going places that night...not even sure who they are with! I like spontaneous stuff..One time I met a girl in the grocery store, and we shopped for food together! After that day, we were together!
(For a little while!) Anyways, if we had went out on a "blind" date, maybe someone hooked us two up, I would have been way too self-conscious, thinking more about how I was acting, then about me and her, and us meeting like that. But of course, I am an American! What happens in Europe??
So maybe just blind dates are evil...........
Of course when you meet someone, or have asked someone to a "date" (I call it going out), you definately SHOULD know that you want her/him, because a date is a COMMITMENT!
Some girls have asked me out before, it was so easy for them, I think. Why should I get nervous, thinking that if I blow up my chances with her with a bad first impression, it'll never happen? Forget that! I'm not going through it.
I would rather just (seriously) not even bother..
If it can't be real, I don't want it! A date, is fake!
I swear, I am not bitter about a bad date or anything. This topic just irks me!
HLG: I respect that, every time! J/K!:D I try my best to treat women with the utmost respect, but I'm not getting married anytime soon! I have to live and get to know alot of things about life first!

You always find something, once you stop looking.. I know what he means. Life's too short I think, to wonder what someone is thinking about you...someone you want. That person already knows, and they know if it's going to happen or not. I guess thats the point I'm driving at here.
:) Does any of that make sense?

GoP must have mistaken you too, as the tradition goes...

After all this, well, I suppose I have my very own personal view that doesn't necessarily correspond with my fellows Spaniards' usual behaviour...
*sigh* When you have studied it, it becomes so weird to find yourself developing such a norm... Aaaagh! Stop cleanig your plumage, little duck!

*steps on legoman's toe* I think I'm picking on you, Legoman, in here, with Wonks...
I did make that mistake! Sorry, Legolam!
Menchu..You're in Spain? I've never been there, but I have seen Wild On, on the E-channel, plus many other things on TV about that area! America does not have nude beaches, at least Cleveland doesn't! They limit the amount of "broken ice" between people, if you know what I mean! Is date even a word there? What do you call it? A behavior?
A more fitting word, I think;)

I had to re-read and re-read it once more, that is three times altogether. And all I can say is it has made my hair stand on end! Aaaaaaaaahhhh!!! :o :o :o
*thanks mum for taking her to normal beaches since childhood*

Ok, you might not have toes, but I have your tooth, which Wonks slapped out of your face, or is that too hard of a slap for you, lil legolam?? :D ;)
I'm familiar with Spains military history, in WW2. I know you get to see bull-fighting, which is, fun looking. The beaches....beautiful. I know Christopher Columbus was from around there, somewhere! Your country was big, back then. Hey...
Don't you get to see a big wave of tide bubbles every year or something? I NEED TO GO TO EUROPE!!!!!!!!!
America is host to the Burning Man. Once a year in some desert thousands of Crazy Americans burn a huge 100 ft. tall METAL MAN!
I like crazy ideas like that, for get-togethers!

Hahaha, I can't believe people still get us confused, how rather brilliant. hoho.
Hmm, you can have as many of my teeth as you want, my mum's got loads in a box at home - god knows why. But there must be what? about 30 of them, what with me having 3 sets of teeth and all.
Bizarrely, thats actually true, but nevermind. the dentist took most of them out, 19 to be precise, ouch, always get put to sleep when having teeth removed, its just too weird if you're awake!!! 5 injections, some big pliers (yes they actually use them) a twist, a crcking noise and voila a tooth. very weird!!!
