For a while now I've been mulling this idea over: A chess tournament for any interested TTF members, which will be played out via PM's using the E-mail Chess system. Just wish to test the water to see if:

a) anybody is interested, and
b) the mods have any objections

So PM me if anybody is interested and Mods state any objections here!

Thank ye kindly, Turgon.

Challengers thus far:

Anamatar IV
Celebthôl
Samwise_Hero
Sting
Turgon

Or we could just do it over yahoo. Or pogo. But it sounds good either way.

I like the idea myself.. though I could never quite get into the movement of my pieces over the phone......pawn to rook 4????/

which is why I think it should be done on Pogo.com or YAhoo. You can set up tournaments and you wont get confused with queen to square F-2 from C-9.

Hmm... Okay Anamatar...

Firstly I think we should stick with PM chess, as it will be easier for players who don't have that much time to play...

Secondly, once this Tourney gets off the ground I will give links to Chess Base Light. (a great utility for keeping track of games)

And Thirdly we will be using English Algebraic Notation (e2-e4 for example), and for those who are not familiar with it: I've written a simple guide which I will PM to anybody who is unsure... but the beauty of Chess Base Light is that it will convert your moves into Algebraic notation anyway, so I foresee no problems.

Lastly, we can create a database for anybody wishing to play 'over the board' chess on the net, as and when this idea takes off...

I hope that answers some of your questions...

I might like to join the tournament, however, there are some possible problems. What would prevent someone from cheating? Anybody could easily use a computer program to make their moves for them. So are we going to going on the honor system?

I would prefer to be one of the contestants at an online venue, as Anamatar has mentioned. And, is this one loss elimination? *Hopes there is a losers bracket*

Well - if people think that playing these matches online is the way to go then I more than willing to go that way. And Sting, I was thinking more along the lines of a Round Robin event: all play all with the winner being decided on points. I think eight people will be enough to get this thing going... so if there are any more takers out there. Sign up now!

This is a great idea.
I love playing chess and would love to join a tournament involving people from TTF. Sign me up!
