View Full Version : So many fights

I just realized that just about every single rp character has a weapon and in every single rp every single character fights. Why is this? I know it is more exciting but why is there not even a single rp character who never lifts a blade in his life? There are different rp aspects than fighting. And why are there always rps of fighting? Why can there be an rp with no fighting whatsoever?

I am being hipocritical here, all of my rps have alot of fighting, but why is it that there are no rps of people finishing the story without engaging in combat? BTW--This is something heren Istarion is trying to incorporate in their rp training.

Anamatar, not one of my rpg characters have ever picked up a sword or weapon. I may have fought in battles...but my only weapon was magic... my character is generally a pacifist. Elbereth hates violence.

But I do see your point...there is a lot of violence in our rpg's...However, our ideas are based on Tolkien's Middle earth...that is filled with disharmony and the struggle between good and evil. War and violence are inevitable.

We must stay true to Tolkien's vision...and whether it is good or bad...violence and War is a major part of that world.

I know but in LotR, the hobbit, and the sil there was much more of strategizing, and building kingdoms, and making allies than marching to war. There wasnt constant battle. In some rps in every single post youre hacking off a head.

And why cant we rewrite tolkiens world? Saurons defeated. Cant there be one or two less-fighting rps? Just a thought though. Im not sure how good of an rp itd be.

You need to check out some of the better rpg's then...we do more strategizing and story building than we do battle scenes.

My current rpg suggestions include: Forbidden, Brother's in Heart, Redemption #36, and Cries Unheard.

Because RPs are about doing things we do not and cannot do in real life. We can't and shouldn't fight as if RPs in real life, so we have to do it here.

And I confess I find it very exciting to describe the movements and feelings of a fight. It's more entertaining than doing a simple RP monologue.

And, what other option is there when you have a group of Orcs trying to kill you? ;)

If you want strategizing and non-combat RPing, then you should check out the threads in Government Councils (which are Forum In-Character, FIC). They are generally running the various governments in Arda and don't involve violence (except when a war breaks out).

I really want everyone even remotely interested in quality RPing to join. We need more people, and I personally welcome anyone who wants to take part to take part! You can be good or evil or in-between. Don't be the shady, mysterious person that nobody knows and has magical powers...be a character from Middle Earth of your own creation and pretend that you are *there*. What would you do? Where would you live? There are so many possibilities, and plenty of openings!

NOTE: by quality posting I don't mean that you have to be a "veteran", but rather that you take it seriously and get into your character, acting realistically.

I understant what you guys mean. It seems like "Light in the Darkness" is all fighting pretty much now, and I can't stand it.

In the RPG that I am in, I am playing Frodo and even though everyone else is fighting (we are in Moria at this moment), Frodo is being his inocent self.

I think the reason there is alot of fighting in the RPGs is because in all of Tolkien's work, almost all the main characters fight and fight alot.

Just my thought.

I agree, I also think that people have alot of fighting in the rp's is because most people would find it boring if there wasn't alot of fighting. Personally, I would like an rp with no violence. A matter of fact...I might start one.

AMATUR (SP? SORRY) HAS A POINT!!!!!
we do far too much fighting, but as many of you have pointed out fighting is the defult thing that we all turn to to keep rps going...

we could do something like create a non-fighting rp, but i dont now what you can use for a subject of it?!?!?!?!

How about just a group of young people that want to see the world. I mean, there could be some fighting...but very very little.

like an exploaration thingy...i like it and tell me what the name is and i will be there...

but the main objective i deem must not be of fighting but to explore the outer regions of ME

I find that fighting should not have to be used to pull a story along. If you know your character you can carry a story along without fighting. A batlle is best used as a climax or an ending. Personally I love doing the non-battle stuff. It allows you develope some sort of connection with the character. It also helps you feel out your discriptions. Cause in battle it's so fast paced that it's almost impossible to go into detail. Well that's all I got to say.
